Then one m orning,. Instead of madam e bringing him his breakfast, a servant brought It.

“W here Is your m istress?” asked the count In a dissatisfied tone. •

A t 11 o’clock the cqunt sen t n serva n t to m adam e to ask a fte r her and to express his disappointm ent th a t she would no t be able to read to him. At

.2 in the afternoon he sent another message, begging th a t she would make an effort to visit him if only for a few m inutes; he w as desperately lonely; Before dthner, which they had been accustom ed to e a t together, he sent word th a t .if he eould not have her company no dinner need be provided fo r him. A t 10 In the evening he declared th a t if she did no t come to bid him good night he would violate all rules o f propriety and go to her. To th is she sent word th a t she was bettec and would breakfast w ith him in the morning. •

So' the count, forced to go to bed w ithou t. seeing her, fre tted all night, and when In the morning he w aited in his easy chair for. h e r to bring his. b reak fast and saw her enter w ith the tray, as usual, he w as beside him self w ith joy. Rising and se tting the tray On the table, he took both her hands in his tind carried them to his Ups.

“My benefactress!" he exclaimed.“ Is it only g ra titu d e , th a t moves

“B ut i am a b lo r cried th e count, and, getting up from hla chair, he pirouetted around the room.

M adame looked sod. Tbe « x m t oeked w hat w as the m atter.

“Since you are well," she said, “we m ust part."

“But,” rejoined the count, putting bis hand on his side, “the motion has brought on a terrib le pain.” ■

“I . think,” said madame, smiling, “th a t'y o u are well enwigh to ride out, b u t any violent motion is still dangerous." ’

“Exactly," exclaimed tb e count, sinking into his chair, w ith an apology for ia groan;

A pair of horses and a sleigh were ordered—for by th is time the Bnow lay deep on the ground—and the two got in among a pile of fu r robes and w ent for a drive.

T hat evening when m adam e and the count were Bitting before a great open fireplace the count looked very sad. •

“W hat troubles yo u ?’, asked madame.

“Something th a t m ust separate me from you,” was the reply.

“And th a t som ething is? " :. “You know of a custom with us here in R ussia by which a woman who is not noble may m arry a noble and thus acquire h is title of .nobility: Somev tim es a wealthy woman will pay a handsom e (ram to nn Impecunious nobleman toi m arry her, th e two parting, not to m ee t‘again, os soon as the ceremony has been performed. My hereditary estates came to' me very much in- cumbered. Indeed, i t w as necessary th n t I should either raise 100,000 ru bles to pay off the debt or lose them. At th is tim e my eye caught an advertisem ent o f a young girl who had Just come into a large fortune fo r "a husband w ith a title, sho to pay for tho honor conferred upon her, the two to p a rt immediately . a fte r the m arriage. So distasteful was the sale to me th a t I stipulated tbe ceremony should take placo by proxy. I never saw my wife.”

The count heaved a sigh a t finishing his confession.

“W hat w as tbe name of the girl you m arried?” asked madame.

“I have forgotten.” .“W as i t Murianleff?"T be count started . “I t was. W hat

A servan t came, whom she m et a t the door and to whom she gave somo instructions ln a low tone. The servant departed, nnd tho count hastened to
