Abstract

The study has taken to find out the factors affecting tourist’s satisfaction in the tourism industry of Jabalpur (M.P.). The study was based on primary data from 200 tourists visiting the tourist spots of Jabalpur and secondary data collected from various journals, reference books and tourism department of Madhya Pradesh. A structured questionnaire was prepared for data collection regarding facilities for tourists, availability of hotels, travel guides and agents, safety measures for tourists, attraction for hot spots, Innovations in tourism etc. The questionnaire used 5-point likert scale and statistical tools like survey and chi square method for data analysis. The hypotheses for the study were 1. There is strong correlation between tourist satisfaction and development of the concern places or 2. Facilities available in tourism leave positive effect on development of tourist places. The result of the study disclosed that there is strong relation between tourist satisfaction and development of the tourist spots. If the tourists are satisfied with the facilities available on tourist places, the place will automatically developed. The study observed that inefficient tourism policies, lack of tourism facilities and infrastructural development, incompetent facilities, lack of safety and innovations in tourism spots affect the satisfaction of tourists. The study provides an approach to the Jabalpur Tourism Industry to conquer such above mentioned inadequacies and barricades. In the form of suggestion, adventure tourism with facilities can be introduced, budget should be provided to develop the spots as well as infrastructure with roads. Hotel, guide and safety should be available for new tourists so that they can feel relax and satisfied. Keywords: tourist satisfaction, facilities, innovations, tourism policies, development

INTRODUCTION

“Atithi Devo Bhavah”, the Indian Tourism Industry based and believes on this punch line which means Guest is God. Somewhere the tourists are also considered as guests so that in India they are treated like god. This is the oldest concept given by India and because of the purity hidden in this the Indians believe that a tourist must be satisfied with the services provided. Because of the commercialization Tourism also has developed as an Industry and Tourism Industry has been taken as the most dynamic and vibrant industry worldwide from the beginning of the millennium. It has become a very important sector in job generating as well as the only way to have long-term development. If the sustainable development principles are respected and promoted, tourism is an approach of protection, conservation and recovery of cultural, historical, folkloric and architectural potential of country. It has essential value on both creating job opportunities and earning foreign exchange. Through tourism, demand depends

3

above all strongly on the economic growth in international tourism. When economies grow, levels of disposable income will usually also rise. A relatively large part of discretionary income will typically be spent on tourism, in particular in the case of emerging economies (World Tourism Organization, 2007).

Tourism Industry helps the economy by growing Foreign exchange, Increasing government revenues, employment generation and income, and regional development (Lickorish and Jenkins 1997). Besides providing income to the community members and regenerating marginal areas, employment benefits of tourism, would halt the urban drift, which is a major source of pressure on the urban environment. The employment multiplier effect of tourism makes the benefits cascade down even to the grass-route level (Anjali Bahuguna 2004). Satisfaction plays a vital role in the development of any product, service or place. If the customers are satisfied the product or service will also lead the market, in the same manner if a tourist is satisfied with the place he has visited, the place will also be developed. Madhya Pradesh is called the "Heart of India" because of its location in the center of the country. It has been home to the cultural heritage of Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Innumerable monuments, exquisitely carved temples, stupas, forts and palaces are dotted all over the state. Madhya Pradesh is also known as Tiger State because of the tiger population. Famous national parks like Kanha, Bandhavgadh, Shivpuri, Sanjay, Pench are located in Madhya Pradesh. Despite having such a rich variety of tourist spots, Madhya Pradesh was unable to create any buzz about itself. Before the Madhya Tourism campaign began, the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation had a very naïve and simple way of going about promoting their state as a tourist destination. There was no specific strategy and there was a complete lack of enthusiasm on part of the state government in promoting its state. MR. Hari Rajan Rao is considered to be the father of brand of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism. Under his supervision the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation created a brand for Madhya Pradesh Tourism. Under his command, MP Tourism has been able to achieve high brand equity and has been able to do good business. Madhya Pradesh bagged the Best Tourism State Award in 2012. The natural beauty of Madhya Pradesh is equally varied. Consisting largely of a plateau streaked with the hill ranges of the Vindhyas and the Satpuras, the State has everything. The hills give rise to the main river system - Narmada and the Tapti, running from east to west, and the Chambal, Sone, Betwa, Mahanadi west to east. Spectacular mountain ranges, meandering rivers dotted with hills and lakes and miles and miles of dense forests offering a unique and exciting panorama of wildlife in sylvan surroundings. Jabalpur city is rated most favorable city for Tourism in Madhya Pradesh, Central India. It is a native place of world famous spiritual guru OSHO. It posses gifted natural scenic beauty of hills, ponds, river, waterfall, historical monuments etc. Local Sightseeing in Jabalpur is usually of single day but to do meaningful Jabalpur Local Sightseeing, one day is not enough. Number of historical monuments and sites surrounds city. Five most popular Tiger Reserves of Central India are in approachable distance from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. World renowned Tiger Reserves like Kanha, Bandhavgarh & Pench National parks are most suitably visited via Jabalpur. Considering the importance of location and connectivity through all major metro cities of India, Jabalpur city has been preferred as a gateway for wildlife tours of Central India. In every tour-program having Madhya Pradesh Tiger Reserves in their itinerary, give at least one day city tour of Jabalpur on arrival/departure.

4

Jabalpur has enough number of places to visit that single day seems short of time. Still must tourist attractions of Jabalpur city includes following places of interest: Bhedaghat: Most popular boating site of Jabalpur city is Bhedaghat. 5

Chousat Yogini Temple : Temple is in between Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar. Chousat Yogini is a temple of about 64 beautifully carved statues of Yogini’s. It is top of the small hill with no entrance charge. Here inside the main temple Lord Shiva & Parvati can be seen together on riding on lord Nandi (bull). Main temple is encircled by 95 statues of yogini’s. Temple is estimated to be built in 11th century by Kalchuri rulers.

Dumna Nature Reserve: Close to Jabalpur Dumna Airport, eco tourism site called Dumna Nature Reserve has been opened for general public. It is spread over an area of 1058 hectare of land on Jabalpur Airport road about 10 kms from city center. OBJECTIVES The study is based upon these questions: 1. To find out factors affecting tourist satisfaction 2. To find out facilities available in tourist spots of Jabalpur 3. To understand the relation between tourist satisfaction and development of concern places. HYPOTHESES 1. There is strong correlation between tourist satisfaction and development of the concern places or 2. Facilities available in tourism leave positive effect on development of tourist places. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Primary data was collected with the help of questionnaire. A questionnaire has been prepared for tourists and a survey of 195 tourists was undertaken to identify their expectations and experiences. Structured questions were used to collect data regarding tourist’s behavior, expectations and suggestions. The study's data collection phase was spread over peak and lean tourist season. The responses were collected after the tourists had traveled or stayed in Jabalpur. A sample of 195 tourists from above mentioned places at Jabalpur has been taken. Sample contains various tourists from all over India. Table 1 indicates that the classification of respondents was accomplished into five categories that are Families, friends, spouse/partners, siblings or single (backpackers). The number of families was 35, friends 45, spouse/partners were 50, siblings were 35 and backpackers were 35. Total 200 tourists were taken in this study. Table 2 specify the responses of respondents in which every visitor was given a questionnaire with 18 questions and the options were used as Likert scale namely very dissatisfied, dissatisfied, fair, satisfied and very satisfied. Respondent’s response was been noted and then analyzed with the help of this table. Table 3 is presenting chi- square test

Where, Fo = observed frequency Fe = Expected frequency Degree of freedom (df) = N-1 i.e. 5-1 = 4 Table value on 95% df = 9.49 Table value on 99% df = 13.28 Conclusion = Calculated value < Table value 2.448<9.49 on 95% df

2.448<13.28 on 99% df RESULT ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION After analysis, the following results were found: Total no. of respondents was 200 to whom 18 questions asked. Each question had five options so the total responses were 3600 but due to some reasons, approx 477 responses were uncovered. From the 3123 total responses 351 visitors are very dissatisfied, 801 tourists are dissatisfied, 1110 tourists voted to fair, 705 are satisfied and 168 are very satisfied. This survey articulates the satisfaction level of tourists in Jabalpur goes to Fair means they are neutral, neither are the fully satisfied nor fully dissatisfied so that the development process of Jabalpur

7

also belong to fair means it is neither very much developed nor underdeveloped in the same time the second highest vote has been given to Dissatisfied. 801 tourists are dissatisfied with the available facilities, transports, hygiene and cleanness of the tourist spots and with the safety measures in the tourist spots which leaves negative impact on the development of Jabalpur city. Tourists have shown their satisfaction towards convenient opening hours and knowledgeable in response to customer requests. CONCLUSION & SUGGESTION In the developing era of Jabalpur, the city needs to improve itself a lot. The city is beautiful and full of natural gifts of god but due to some deficiencies like transportation, unsafe measures, unavailability of facilities etc. it is unable to achieve the charm of a fully developed tourist spot The objectives of this research paper are achieved properly i.e. the factors which affect tourist satisfaction are: safety, facilities, basic consumables and transport. The facilities that are available in tourist spots of Jabalpur are very less, there is hardly any safety measures available, hotels are not proper and the roads and vehicle facilities are inappropriate. There is a relation between tourist satisfaction and the development of concern tourist spot like tourists are showing their interest to visit Bargi and Bhedaghat so that these places are more developed as compare to other stated places. it proves our hypothesis that There is strong correlation between tourist satisfaction and development of the concern places, here, in Jabalpur the tourists are not actually satisfied so that it can’t be said that Jabalpur is a very developed place as compare to other cities. The other hypothesis was facilities available in tourism leaves a positive effect on development of tourist places which is also absolutely true because tourists who are coming to visit Jabalpur are not exactly getting what they want and expect, so they are not satisfied and because of their dissatisfaction the place (Jabalpur) does not called developed. On the whole the total and overall rating of Jabalpur tourism is low so that the place i.e. Jabalpur is also not so much developed and tourist satisfaction means a lot to the development because if tourists are satisfied they will be thinking to revisit the place if they are not they won’t even recommend anybody to go. The recommendation or suggestions can be: a. Tourism department should make some new policies regarding tourism, which can attract tourists from various places. b. Government should make basic facilities as well as safety measures available on tourist spot c. security must be given to the tourists from everywhere and specially to female tourists. d. innovative tourism themes can be chalked out like adventure tourism, green tourism and village tourism etc. e. Most importantly, tourist satisfaction is always required so that everyone should remember it. After having these points in mind Jabalpur tourism can also grow and can developed as the most famous tourist spot of India.
