ISO (the International Organization for Standard-ization) is a worldwide federation of nationalstandards bodies (ISO member bodies). 1 Scope

This International Standard provides a code for thepresentation of names of scripts. The codes weredevised for use in terminology, lexicography,bibliography, and linguistics, but they may be usedfor any application requiring the expression ofscripts in coded form. This standard also includesguidance on the use of script codes in some ofthese applications.

NOTE: In principle, this standard is intended to providecoded representation for the names of all the scripts ofthe world. Unique identification of a script is not alwaysstraightforward and obvious; therefore a number ofscripts have been included in annex B pending furtherstudy before codes are standardized for them.

4 Script codes

4.1 Structure of the alphabetic script codes

The alphabetic script codes are created from theoriginal script name in the language commonlyused for it, transliterated or transcribed into Latinletters. If a country, where the script concernedhas the status of a national script, requests acertain script code, preference is given to thiscode whenever possible. The four-letter codesshall be written with an initial capital Latin letterand final small Latin letters (taken from the rangeAaaa to Zzzz). This serves to help differentiatescript codes from language codes and countrycodes: so, for example, Mong mon MON or Mongmn MN would refer to a book in the Mongolianscript, in the Mongolian language, originating inMongolia.

NOTE: See 4.7 regarding changes to the codes.

4.2 Structure of the numeric script codes

The numeric script codes have been assigned toprovide some measure of mnemonicity to thecodes used. The following ranges have been used:

NOTE 1: ISO/IEC 10646 uses the character-glyphmodel (defined in ISO/IEC TR 15285:1998) to classifythe characters used to write different languages. ISO15924 does not attempt to apply the character-glyphmodel, because it is sometimes important to identifycertain script variants regardless of the encoding agiven text may employ. For example, a Syriac book maybe written in one of the three variants of the Syriac script


4 Codets dÕ�criture

4.1 Cr�ation des codets alphab�tiquesdÕ�criture

Les codets alphab�tiques dÕ�criture sont cr��s �partir du nom original de lÕ�criture dans la languecommun�ment utilis�e pour celle-ci, translitt�r� outranscrit en alphabet latin. (Estrangelo, Nestorian, Jacobite). Identification of suchscript variants, while outside the scope of ISO/IEC10646, is relevant to the content of script codes. Forexample, a user ordering a book through interlibraryloan may prefer, or may wish to exclude, the Gaelicvariant of the Latin script for reasons of ease of legibilityor familiarity with one of the variants.

NOTE 2: The classifications here reflect the chiefattribute of the scripts so classified, and are notnecessarily comprehensive of the ways in which thescripts are used. For example, while Ogham may bewritten from left to right, it is also written vertically frombottom to top. Similarly, the Hangul (Hangeul) alphabetis sometimes written in vertical columns, and the lettersof its alphabet are arranged in syllabic clusters.

NOTE 3: Within each category numeric identifiersassigned to scripts have followed a principle ofchronology, and genetic relationship, though thisprinciple cannot be established by any hard and fastrule, since scripts may have many different charac-teristics. Codes have been assigned by spacing themout so that scripts encoded in future may be assigned toappropriate places in the range.

4.3 Relation of the script codes to other ISOstandards

The four-letter codes are derived from ISO 639-2where the name of a script and the name of alanguage using the script are identical (example:Gujaraø tõø ISO 639 Guj, ISO 15924 Gujr). In caseswhere there is no identity, the script name mayhave a unique form (examples: Korean kor,Hangul (Hangeul) Hngl; Punjabi pan, GurmukhõøGurm ; Dhivehi div , Thaana Than). Wherepossible the the first three letters of the four-lettercode corresponds to the three-letter code.Preference is given to the Bibliographical codesgiven in ISO 639-2 in deriving the codes specifiedin this International Standard.

4.4 Adaptation of the script codes

When adapting this International Standard to otherscripts (for example, Cyrillic or Greek), codes shallbe formed according to the principles of thisInternational Standard.

4.5 Addition of new script codes

For the purpose of allocating additional scriptcodes, ISO has designated Everson Gunn

4.3 Relation entre les codets dÕ�criture et lesautres normes ISO

4.6 Application of script codes

Script codes can be used in the followingparticular instances.

4.6.1 To indicate generally the scripts in whichdocuments are or have been written or recorded.

Procedures for the Maintenance Agency and

A.1 Maintenance Agency ISO 15924

Everson Gunn Teoranta (EGT) has beendesignated the Maintenance Agency for thisInternational Standard (ISO 15924/MA). It isresponsible for the addition of script codesaccording to these procedures.

A.2 Responsibilities of the MaintenanceAgency

A.2.1 Application for the addition of new andfor the change of existing script codes.

ISO 15924/MA shall receive and reviewapplications for the addition of new script codesand for the change of existing script codes. It shallsuggest an assignment of a code when therelevant criteria are met according to the rulesgiven in A.3.3 and A.3.4, and inform the applicantof the result of ISO 15924/MA actions.

A.2.2 Maintenance of list

The ISO 15924/MA shall maintain an accurate listof information associated with assigned scriptcodes. If necessary, i t shall safeguard anyconfidential information. It shall process updates ofadded script codes and distribute them on aregular basis to subscribers and other parties.

A.2.3 Other general responsibilities

ISO 15924/MA shall do the following:

¥ handle all aspects of the maintenanceprocess in accordance with good businesspractice;

¥ indicate in operations that it has beendesignated as ISO 15924/MA by ISO;

A.3 Joint Advisory Committee ISO 15924/MA-JAC

A Joint Advisory Committee ISO 15924/MA-JAC isestablished to advise the ISO 15924/MAMaintenance Agency. It shall guide the applicationof the coding rules as laid down in ISO 15924.

A.3.1 Composition

ISO 15924/MA-JAC is composed of:

¥ 1 representative of Everson Gunn Teoranta(EGT, representing ISO 15924/MA);

¥ 1 representative of Library of Congress (LC;representing ISO 639-2/RA);

¥ 2 representatives of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC2/WG2 (nominated by ISO/IEC JTC1/ SC2)

¥ 2 representatives of ISO TC46 (nominatedby ISO TC46);

¥ 2 representatives of the Unicode TechnicalCommittee (nominated by the UTC).

The three technical committees may nominatesubstitute representatives.

A.3.1.2 Membership.

The three technical committees may nominatesubstitute representatives. The representative ofEGT will hold the chair. Up to five technicalexperts may be asked to participate as non-votingobservers. The observers will be entitled toreceive documents sent to the ISO 15924/MA-JACmembership and will be expected to providecomments in return.

A.3.2 Working procedures within ISO15924/MA-JAC.

ISO 15924/MA-JAC wil l work primarily byelectronic correspondence and exceptionally bymeeting. If a meeting is necessary, it shallpreferably be held in conjunction with plenarymeetings of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC2 and ISO/IECJTC1/SC2/WG2 or ISO TC46 and ISO TC46/SC2.

A.3.3 Additions and deletions to the list ofentities, changes of codes.

Requests for additions, deletions, and changes ofcodes shall be supported by a justification. WhenISO 15924/MA consults ISO 15924/MA-JAC aboutthe proposed inclusion, deletion or change, andsuggests a code, ISO 15924/MA-JAC is obliged torespond within one month.

NOTE: In general, script codes shall be added to ISO15924 1) when the script has been coded in ISO/IEC10646, and 2) when the script is agreed, by experts inISO 15924/MA-JAC to be unique and a candidate forencoding in the UCS. This does not mean that the scriptwill be encoded in the UCS. Undeciphered scripts, suchas Phaistos or Rongorongo, are considered candidatesbut may not be encoded because of their controversialnature (Phaistos is known only from a single document,and Rongorongo is so complex that without adecipherment it may not be technically feasible toencode it in the near future.).

A.3.4 Reservation of codes.

When a request for inclusion of a new entity hasbeen rejected, ISO 15924/MA may reserve therequested code for the use of the applicant andother possible users. ISO 15924/MA will keep arecord of such reservations.

A.3.5 Creation of script codes.

The creation of script codes is subject to the rulesdescribed in clause 4.1 of ISO 15924.

A.3.6 Voting procedures.

Each member of ISO 15924/MA-JAC has one vote(voting is obligatory). Voting shall be conducted byelectronic mail (e-mail) or in a meeting. Failure toreply is considered as an abstention. Anabstention shall not prevent the addition of a script
