RESULTS OF SURVEY QUESTIONS OF THE FIRST GLOBAL SUMMIT ON BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY IN THE ENERGY SECTOR
EventHorizon 2017 was the first global summit onblockchain technology in the energy sector. Initiated byGrid Singularity, it assembled experts, governmentofficials, decision makers, start-ups and establishedmarket players to discuss how blockchain and otherdecentralized transaction technologies may affect theway our energy system is organized.
The summit featured several panel discussions withrenowned experts and moderators. In advance of thesummit, participants and moderators were invited tosubmit suggestions for questions that could be used for asurvey among participants during EventHorizon 2017.The initiators of this exercise were Christoph Burger andDr. Jens Weinmann of ESMT Berlin and Grid Singularityfounders Ewald Hesse and Dr. Ana Trbovich.
The survey, including 14 select questions, was conductedbefore and after each panel discussion, starting with theutility panel, the regulatory panel, the investor panel, and finally the security panel.
As the summit’s audience consisted of attendees withhigher level of industry expertise and an intrinsicinclination to consider blockchain relevant for futureenergy supply, the results can be said to reflect theopinion of informed public but cannot be extrapolated tothe general public. The poll results are shown on thesubsequent pages of this presentation with the aim ofstimulating further discussion and creative thinking.

PRESS RELEASE: EVENTHORIZON 2017 SUMMITEventHorizon 2017 was the first global summit on blockchaintechnology in the energy sector convening experts, governmentofficials, decision makers, start-ups and established market players todiscuss and develop new energy solutions. It was initiated by the Start-up Grid Singularity. Platinum Partner of the event was EY.More than 500 people from 36 countries came together to think aboutand collaborate on how blockchain will enable a revolution in theenergy sector at the historical venue, Hofburg Palace in Vienna.
Welcome remarks were given by Michael Hübner from the AustrianFederal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, UlrikeHuemer from the City of Vienna and Ewald Hesse, initiator of theEventHorizon summit. The first keynote speaker was Dr. Christoph Frei,Secretary General at the World Energy Council, who describedblockchain as the missing link in the energy system and electricity asthe new oil. Ethereum inventor Vitalik Buterin outlined in a keynote hisview on the meaning of decentralization and his classification on it.
Dr. Gavin Wood, Heiko Hees, Christoph Jentzsch and Ewald Hesseclarified in a fireside discussion many of the confusing aspects ofblockchain technology, which is a trusted way to track the ownership ofassets without the need for a central authority. An audience pollshowed that 59 percent expect the new technology to reduce energycosts.
However, since the energy market is subject to state regulations, theregulatory panel discussed the future of regulation avoiding over-regulation. Member of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, mentionedthat the first part of the legislation is supposed to be passed aroundthe end of the year.
The summit showed that there are a growing number of use cases indevelopment across the energy sector including: peer-to-peer energytrading, the sharing of connected devices, the use of digital currenciesto record energy production, enable local markets and to facilitateaccess to energy. To be the vehicle for the energy sector and to explorethe impact of blockchain collectively, Dr. Hervé Touati, managingdirector of the Rocky Mountain Institute, announced the launch of thenon-profit Energy Web Foundation.
A panel of investors gave unique insights how to attract funding: have arobust technology roadmap, be transparent about strengths and beclear on your strategy and timeframes for growth. But there was alsothe chance to discuss the important topic of security. Our connecteddevices are potentially unsecure and exist in hostile environments. In asense security must be shifted from a feature to a requirement.
On the second day focusing on start-ups, investments and security theaudience was asked to vote their favourite start-up pitch out of 15candidates. The winner of the Top of the Horizon 2017 was OneUp.Founder Mark Dijksman received the award under applause of theaudience. His company acts as a bridge between large enterprises andsmall start-ups through a structured approach.
It was an exciting and successful summit on blockchain as a key enablerfor the energy future and a benchmark for the energy industry.
