Animal Discovery at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
Students will become explorers at the Cleveland Zoo and around the world. They will collaborate to learn, discuss, and share information about the various animals found at the Cleveland Zoo prior
to their zoo fieldtrip.

The Cleveland Zoo needs your help safely returning animals back to their homes in the
wild, located throughout the world.
Introduction
When you finish returning all of the animals to their homes, you will choose one animal
from your group that you would want to keep as a pet and present your pet to the class.
You will be exploring websites to help you get the information you need.

The Task
By the end of this WebQuest you will:
• Work in groups to research animals from the Cleveland Zoo using websites and a graphic organizer.
• Locate and label the home in the wild of your animals on a map of the world.
• Choose a pet from your animal group, then share information about this pet to your classmates.
• Be prepared for your fieldtrip to the Cleveland Zoo

Step 1: You will be assigned to one of four groups:
The Process
The Red Group
The Blue Group
The Yellow Group
The Green Group
Work with your group to identify and research your assigned animals using the Cleveland Zoo website.
Step 2: Use this graphic organizer to organize your
research. Step 3: Locate each animal’s home in the wild (range) using the Google Maps website and label each location on this blank map of the world.
Step 4: Each group member will select a different animal from the four you researched to keep as a pet. Draw a portrait of your new pet. You will present your portrait to the class, along with the information you learned about your pet using the websites, graphic organizer, and map. Remember to give your pet a name!

Now that you have researched many of the animals found at The Cleveland Zoo you are ready for your
class fieldtrip! You have discovered where they live, what they eat,
and even where to find them once you are at the zoo.
Be on the lookout for your pet and keep in mind all of the information you learned from your classmates
about their pets as you explore.Feel free to bring a camera to capture your memories
and most importantly…HAVE FUN!!
