Introduction Thank you for choosing Mech-fiber™PACE. The Quick User Guide introduces the User to the feed

management program which is DTM 2009. The DTM 2009 software is used with the Keenan Pace

System.

This Quick User Guide will help the user to configure and formalize them, selves using the DTM 2009

software. This may consist of, creating groups, adding new diets, download diet execution data and

sending diets to the card.

DTM 2009 software will be installed by your Nutritionist or the Keenan PACE Support team.

Minimum System Requirements In order to use the DTM2009 your PC has to satisfy those minimum system requirements:

Windows 2000 SP4; Windows XP SP2 (HOME/PRO); Windows Vista

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or higher

Microsoft Excel 2000 or higher

Pentium III, 1 GHZ or higher

Ram: 512 MB (1 GB or higher)

Monitor: 1024 * 768 recommended resolution

CD-Rom device

Mouse or alternative

Internet connection with e-mail recommended

Supported Operation Systems The DTM2009 software works correctly only on the operation systems listed below:

Windows 2000 SP4

Windows XP SP2 (HOME/PRO)

Windows Vista( Home, Premium, Business, Ultimate, Enterprise editions)

Un-Supported Operation Systems The following operative systems are not supported:

Windows 95,

Windows 98/98SE

Windows 2000(SP1,SP2,SP3),

Windows ME

Linux (all available distributions)



Installing DTM2009 on Windows To install the software you will need the DTM 2009 CD, which is obtained from the DTM kit or PACE

support.

1. Insert the CD and double click on the file “DTM 2009_setup.exe”.

2. Select the language you wish to install DTM 2009 in and click “OK”.

3. Click “Next”



4. Click “Next” to install the DTM 2009 in default location, or click “Browse” If you wish to

install the DTM 2009 in different location, default path is C:\Program Files\DTM2009 which

is used in 99% of the time.

5. Ensure “Full Installation” is selected and that “Main” is Ticked then Click “Next”

6. DTM 2009 is now ready to install, If Location is correct Click “Next”



7. Once you click next the installation will start, and install the DTM 2009 application.

8. After Finishing Installing the Application, a message box will appear Click “OK” to install

DTM components (Microsoft SQL Express)

9. Depending on the Clients Computer spec, it may take between 5 and 15 minutes to complete

the SQL Express installation.



10. Click on “Finish” and DTM 2009 software is ready to use.Note if you get a message please

restart your system, Once you click “Finish”, your system will restart..



DTM 2009 License Before you begin it is portent that you have the following ready.

License file – This can be optained from DGsupport or PACEsupport, on the back of the CD cover that cames with the Kit, you email the License Key to DG or PACEsupport,

1. Download the License file you received by email from DGsupport or PACEsupport and

save to a folder on the Desktop.

2. To start the DTM 2009 Console, double click the “DTM 2009” icon.

3. The DTM 2009 Console appears, Next click on “License” Tab.

4. Once you click on the “License” Tab, you will see “Software not activated”, to activate

the software you will need to apply the license file. Click “Activate Now”



5. Next you need to navagate to the license file that you downloaded from the email

received from DGsupport or PACEsupport, the file fromat with look like:

P000.000.000.000.lic or A000.000.000.000.lic, Highlight the file and Click “Open”

6. Once you click “Open”, You will see that the “Software Successfuly Activated”

The DTM 2009 Software is ready to be used.

Note: DTM Software will need Customers Keenan Activation Details.



Getting Started with the DTM2009 The DTM 2009 shortcut will be located on the desktop. To start the DTM 2009 Console, double click the

“DTM 2009” icon.

From the DTM 2009 Console click on “Start Engine”

It can take up to 1 minute to load the program on the first time.

After clicking on Start Engine, the DTM software will load “Windows Internet Explorer”, displaying the

following web page.

At this point you can enter the DTM2009 by using the Username and Password that have been already

stored in the program during the installation:

1) Username: admin

2) Password: admin

Note: If you check the Remember me box, the DTM2009 allows it to store the Username and

Password, so the next time the software is launched it does not request the Username or Password.

Also Note: If you close the session of the DTM2009 by clicking on logout button, at the next launch of

the DTM2009, Username and Password will be requested.

DTM Software – Keenan Client Activation To activate Keenan client, you will need the Clients Username and Password, which you received by

email from PACEsupport.

Keenan Client Activation

To activate a client the following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Configuration. And then click on Keenan Settings,

2) The screen will refresh displaying Keenan Settings;

3) At the top Fill out the fields; and Click “Save”

a) Username

b) Password

4) After clicking Save, you can then click on “Synchronize”

5) If Clients details are correct you will get the message “Operation Successfully Complete”



Main View After clicking on Login the DTM software will open, seen below “Figure 5”:

Main Frame: This changes after you click on an item, on the Menu Frame,

for example; if you were to click on Diet and then Diet setup in the Menu Frame this will not change, but

the Main Frame changes to allow you to add a new diets. This same process happens anytime you select

any of the Submenu‟s on the Menu Frame.

Menu Frame: These are the menus which you use to add new diets, view reports, send milk production

or synchronize the card. Each menu has submenus which can be seen below.

Language configuration DTM2009 has Multilanguage built-into the software, therefore it is very important to set the default

language after the startup of the software.

However, if you want, you can change the language of the DTM2009 software by using the dedicated

drop menu.

The following available languages are:

1) Danish

2) German

3) English

4) French

5) Hungarian

6) Italian

7) Dutch

8) Swedish

9) English USA

10) Chinese

Note: The Default Language is English. You must change the language on the DTM2009 Console

“Figure 6” and also on the “Figure 7” DTM2009 main screen.

Configuring DTM

Groups

Groups are used to define the animals to which a diet will be fed e.g. Milkers, Dry Cow. When entering a

new Group Name the system also asks for the Average Animal Size. This is used when working out the

number of rotations required as smaller animals require more chopping.

Create a new Group

To create a new Group the following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Setup Information, then click on Groups, “Figure 8”;

2) At this point the screen will refresh displaying a list of no groups; First setup will show no groups.

3) At the bottom of List of Groups click on New, screen refreshes;

4) Add/Edit Groups is displayed, “Figure 9”;

5) Fill out the fields;

a) Name – Animal group name i.e. Cows, Heifers.

b) Animal Size – Animal average weight per group.

6) After the fields are filed in click on Save;

Note:

To verify that the group has being added or to add

new group please follow Step 1).

To edit a current group name click on the name you wish to change i.e. Milkers in “Figure 8” and follow

from Step 4).

Ingredients Ingredients are used to make up a Diet; therefore they will have to be added in

Figure 10

Create a new Ingredient

To create a new Ingredient the following steps is required:

6) From the Menu click on Diets. And then click on Ingredients, “Figure 10”;

7) The screen will refresh displaying Ingredients;

8) At the bottom of List of Ingredients click on New, screen refreshes;

9) Ingredients is displayed, “Figure 11”;


a) Name – Feed name displayed on weight box

b) Description – Long description of Name

c) Cost/Weight unit – (Kg) $250/ton = 0.25 per KG

d) % Dry Matter – 25

e) Category – See Feed Category Definitions on page 21

f) Subcategory – See Feed Category Definitions on page 21

g) Home Grown – Select if ingredient is home grown or not.

11) After the fields are filed in, click on Save;

Note:

To verify that the group has being added or to add a new group, please follow from Step 1).

To edit a current Ingredient click on the name you wish to change,

I.e. Maze in “Figure 10” and follow from Step 4).

Diets

Diets are made up of the ingredients to which we have added; now you need to make up a new diet.

Create a new Diet

To create a new Diet the following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Diets, then click on Diet Setup, “Figure 12”;

2) The screen will refresh displaying Diets;

3) At the bottom of List of Diets click on New, screen refreshes;

4) Diet is displayed, “Figure 13”;


a) Description – Name of Diet which a appears on the Box

b) Group – Select the group animals which the diet is feed to – See:

Groups

c) Cow Numbers – Enter in the number of cows in group to be fed

d) Machine – Select Mixer Wagon if different

e) Premix – Select if there is a premix present or no premix in diet

6) After the fields are filed in click on Save; the screen

will refresh with a massage “You have to insert at least one component in

the recipe”,

7) Click on Diet Ingredients; at the top of “Figure 13” to add Ingredients to the Diet.

Note:

You must click Save to continue or all entered fields with data will be lost.

To add Ingredients to Diet the following steps is required:

1) Click on Diet Ingredients at the top of “Figure 13” to add

Ingredients to the Diet.

2) The screen will refresh displaying Diet Ingredients “Figure 14”;

3) To select an Ingredient click on the Magnifying Glass “Figure

15”;

4) A new popup box Select Component “Figure 16” will appear,

with a list of Ingredients to pick from;

5) Click on the ingredient you wish to add, this ingredient will then appear in the list as shown

in “Figure 14”;

6) When you have selected all of your ingredients, enter the fresh weight quantity per cow

into the Weight/Cow field shown in “Figure 14”;

7) After all the fields are filled in, check the Total Weight field shown in “Figure 14” has the

correct Total for that Diet, then click on Save;

Note:

Always click Save if you make any changes, also if you receive an error “Row or value not valid in the table Diet

Ingredients”, you will need to follow Step 1) to add New Ingredients.

Removing Ingredients from Diet

To remove an Ingredient from a Diet the following steps is required:

1) In diet Ingredient click on the Trashcan “Figure 18”; and it will turn Red;

2) Once you click on Save, the Ingredient will be removed from the diet “Figure 17”;

If you remove an Ingredient, you can add it back in by following Adding Ingredients to Diet on page12

Optimizing When the diet is optimised the ingredients are put into their correct loading order, in accordance with the

Keenan Mix Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and the required rotations if any, are assigned to the

ingredients and at the end of the diet.

Optimising the Diet

To optimise the Diet the following steps is required:

1) On Diet Setup “Figure 19” there is an Optimize Button, You

will need to click on it, this then sends the diet to the Keenan‟s web server which will apply the

SOP and sends it back to your computer.

2) Once successfully completed, a pop up will appear as

showing in “Figure 20” Click OK.

The Diet is now setup and ready to be selected and

transferred to the Memory Card.

Note:

That once a diet has been optimised, you can make any changes to it. If you wish to change a diet you

must first copy it, by clicking on Create a Copy button. This will make a separate non-optimised copy of

the diet which can be modified and re-optimised

Create a copy of a: Diet

To create a copy of a current or past diet the following steps is required:

1) Click on Create a Copy;

2) A message box “Figure 22” will appear Click OK;

3) The Screen will refresh but the Code will change to the

next higher number from 1 to 2, “Figure 21”.

4) Diet dry cow nov has now being copied which can be

changed or used again.

Note:

If you wish to change the Diet which has being copied, please follow Create a new Diet on Page 10 or if

you need to change the Ingredients please follow Adding Ingredients to Diet on Page 11

Changing a Current Diet New Feature

Changing a Current: Diet

To change a current or past diet the following steps is required:

1) Simply make one change to any of the fields and then click on Save;

2) Once the Save Button is clicked, the Optimize Button becomes enabled

again, therefore allow you to re-optimize the diet.

3) Fields which can be changed:

a) Description – Name of Diet which a appears on the Box

b) Group – Select the group animals which the diet is feed to – See: Groups

c) Cow Numbers – Enter in the number of cows in group to be fed

d) Machine – Select Mixer Wagon if different

e) Premix – Select if there is a premix present or no premix in diet

To add or change Ingredients to Diet the following steps is required:

a) Click on Diet Ingredients at the top of “Figure 23” to add

Ingredients to the Diet.

b) The screen will refresh displaying Diet Ingredients “Figure 23”;

c) To select an Ingredient click on the Magnifying Glass “Figure 16”;

d) A new popup box Select Component “Figure 24” will appear, with a list of Ingredients to

pick from;

e) Click on the ingredient you wish to add, this ingredient will then appear in the list as shown in

“Figure 23”;

f) When you have selected all of your ingredients, enter the fresh weight quantity per cow into

the Weight/Cow field shown in “Figure 23”;

g) After all the fields are filled in, check the Total Weight field shown in “Figure 23” has the

correct Total for that Diet, then click on Save;

h) Once you click Save, the screen will refresh and return to Diet Setup, you will notice that the

Optimize Button is still enabled and not optimized.

i) With the Diet now changed, you can proceed to Click on

the Optimize Button

j) Once successfully completed, a pop up will appear as

showing in “Figure 26” Click OK.

The Diet is now setup and can be transferred to the Memory Card.

Note:

That once a diet has been optimised, you can still make any changes to it, by following the same process

again

Also when you change a diet, you do not need to Select diets to Transfer, as when a diet is benign

changed it only changes the Revision number, therefore any change made with in the diet also

updates the diet already selected in Select diets to Transfer

Always click Save if you make any changes,

Diets to Transfer Diet to transfer allows you to select the order of the diets, to which diet you are going to feed first. The

following process allows you to select the diets you wish to transfer to the memory key for a Newly

created diet or Copied Diet.

To select the order of the diets the following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Diets, then click on Diet to Transfer;

2) The screen will refresh displaying a list with Diets Selected “Figure 27”;

3) To select a Diet click on the Magnifying Glass “Figure 28”;

4) A new popup box Select Component “Figure 29” will appear, with a

list of Diets to pick from;

5) Click on the Diet you wish to add, this diet will then appear in the list as

shown in “Figure 27”;

6) Once you have selected your required Diets, click on Save;

Note:

Always be sure to click on Save, or your selection will be lost, and the diets will not be transferred to data

card.

If you have only Changed a current diet, you don‟t not need to select the diet to be transfer..

Weekly Task 1 - Synchronizing the Memory Card You must Synchronise the Memory Card to Send new diets and Retrieve new run Diets called

executions from the memory key.

Downloading Data from Card

To retrieve diets from the card the following steps is required:

1) Insert the Memory card “Figure 30” in the Data Transfer Interface “Figure 31”

2) From the Menu click on Diet Transfer, then click on Card Management;

3) The screen will refresh displaying Data Transfer “Figure 32”;

4) Select the USB Card from Device Type “Figure 33” and then select the drive letter

„unit‟

associated to your USB Data Transfer Interface from the dropdown menu;

5) Ensure that is Ticked, then

Click Synchronize “Figure 33”.

Note:

Always download execution data from the card first, before sending any new diets back to the

card.

When the Memory card “Figure 32” has being plugged into the Data Transfer Interface “Figure 31”

the computer selects a drive letter which we call a Drive “Figure 33”, this may range from (E) to (H).

Please ensure that the correct Drive has being selected “Figure 33”, or you will get the error (-105),

which is related to customers not selecting the correct drive. To check you have the correct drive, Select

Start - My Computer as seen in “Figure 30”, It should appear as: Removable (E) to (H).

Sending Diets to Card

To send diets to the card the following steps is required:

1) Insert the Memory card “Figure 32” in the Data Transfer Interface “Figure 31”;

2) From the Menu click on Diet Transfer. And then click on Card Management;

3) The screen will refresh displaying Data Transfer “Figure 30”;

4) Ensure that is Ticked,

5) Put a Tick in , after its ticked a Message box will appear “Figure 35”,

warning you that all current data will be deleted;

6) Click on OK;

Note:

When it has complete, it will display Operation Successfully Completed.

Once you have clicked OK on “Figure 35”, all data will be deleted, which cannot be obtained

again.

Weekly Task 2 – Milk Production Data Upload

PACE software has the facility to send the Milk Production Data along with the feeding data to Keenan. It

is important that you perform these steps after synchronising the memory key so that all feed data is also

available for sending.

Sending Milk Production Data:

To send milk production data following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Keenan –Mech Fiber. And then click on Milk Production;

2) At this point the screen will refresh displaying Production Data “Figure 32”;

3) Fill in all required fields;

a) Group – The Group of animals milkers of which the data relates.

b) Date – date of production data being submitted. (Historical data can be submitted at any stage).

c) Total Milk Produced – Total liters of milk produced for the number of milking cows being fed that

day.

d) Fat – Select by Percentage or Weight.

e) Protein – Select by Percentage or Weight.

f) Days In Milk – Average days a cow is in milk from this group of cows.

g) Milk Price – Value per litre in your own currency

h) Grazing kg DM/Day – KG DM of grass intake per head per day

i) Total Herd takeouts – kgs Feed removed from TMR or wastage or non milking cattle groups

j) Concentrates – Any extra feeding in the shed, in the bail, in the parlor, in the paddock e.g. grazed

turnips

a. Name of feed

b. Value per kg fresh weight added e.g. $300/ton = 0.3 per kg

c. Quantity - total in kg’s for all milking cows fed

d. Period – select from drop down menu as required.

e. DM % - state DM % of feed used e.g. dairy pellet = 87

k) Milk urea – State value if a milk urea test completed

l) Cell count – State the most recent Somatic Cell Count value available e.g. 157000

m) Manure consistency – Select from drop down menu

n) Grains visible in dung – Select from drop down menu

o) Fibre visible in dung – Select from drop down menu

p) Comments – Please fill in any relevant information about the feeds or herd that would be of interest to

your Mech-fiber nutritionist]

4) After the fields are filled in, click on Send Data, all data will be sent to the Keenan

systems for the performance monitor calculation.



5) Once you have clicked on save the screen will refresh displaying the RPM:

a. Date:

b. FCE:

c. DMI

d. Yeild

e. Protein

f. Fat

g. Margin

h. Cost/L

i. Milk Price

j. Total N of Milking Cows

k. Days in Milk

l. Group/Pen

m. Ingredients used

6) You will receive an email from the system, alerting you that the data has been received

within 12 hours.

7) If feel that you have entered the data incorrectly i.e. Milk Price, you can simple scroll to the

bottom of the Milk Production forum and where you see History: click on the Select Button,

change and Resend Data

Note:

Once milk production data has been logged on the date given, all execution data from relevant

milking diets for that date are also sent to the Keenan system. This can be the average feed usage

for the last 3 days. You need to have 3 or more diet executions completed and stored on the

memory card to log milk production data again.

Ensure that all executions have being downloaded from the Memory Card before sending Milk

Production Data.



PACE of Grass



Feed Category & Subcategory Definitions When adding a new ingredient you will need to select a Category along with a Subcategory.

Category & Subcategory are as follows:

Category is categorized by the type of ingredients that are used in a mix and Subcategory is the value of

which type of grade is applied to the ingredient in category. Basically Category & Subcategory

determines the length of time an ingredient needs to mix and the positioning of the ingredient during the

load to get optimum Mech-Fiber ration presentation.

Category

o Subcategory

Additional Long Fibre

o Zero - Very brittle come through a rotary combine or a baler with knives. Needs no

processing and would be added at the end of a mix.

o One - A brittle straw that has come through a rotary combine or a baler with knives.

Needs very little processing and would be added in the middle of the mix, just before any

forages.

o Two - Average straw usually a wheat straw that might have had a little weathering.

Needs little processing and is added at the start of a mix but doesn‟t need any extra time

added to the end of the mix.

o Three - Fairly pliable could be wheat or a stiffer barley straw usually through a

conventional combine with little or no weathering. Needs to have a good length of time

in the mixer to chop it up.

o Four - Very pliable usually only barley and oat straw or could be straw from crimped

cereal. Needs to have a long time in the mixer wagon to process it correctly

o Five - Extremely pliable usually only barley and oat straw and from crimped cereal.

Needs to have a very long time in the mixer wagon to process it correctly.

o Lucerne 1 - Lucerne/Alfalfa hay that separates very easily and doesn‟t need a long time

to chop. It will go in towards the end of a mix but will not have lots of revolutions after it.

o Lucerne 2 - Lucerne/Alfalfa hay that needs time in the mixer to open up and separate,

but doesn‟t need a long time to chop. It will go in earlier in the mixthan Lucerne 1.



Soft Fibre

o Clamped - Clamped or pit silage, can be either precision chopped or trailer pick up. This

will have a DM of 25% or higher. It can be grass, clover or similar type feed. It is a

silage that is very hard to be over processed and could go in to the wagon at any time.

o Bale 1 - Baled silage that that has gone through chopper baler. Usually only round bales

and could be a grass or wholecrop. Usually DM under 30%. It will go into the mixer first

and not need any extra processing time to chop to the correct length.

o Bale 2 - Baled silage that that has gone through chopper baler. Usually only round bales

and could be a grass or wholecrop. Usually DM 30-40%. It will go into the mixer first but

not need a huge length of time to process to the correct length.

o Bale 3 - Baled silage that has gone through a conventional baler. It could be either

round or square bales and either a grass or wholecrop. Usually DM 40-50%It will go into

the mixer first and could take a few minutes (3 mins) to do so, it will also need time to

process once it is in the machine.

o Bale 4 - Baled silage that has gone through a conventional baler. It could be either

round or square bales and either a grass or wholecrop. Usually DM %50+. It will go into

the mixer first and could take a few minutes (5+ Mins) to do so, it will also need a good

length of time to process once it is in the machine (10 mins +).

o Clamp max - Clamped or pit silage, it will have be precision chopped and is only usually

grass silage. It will go in and the end of the mix and if left in for too long it will ball up. It

is usually under 25% DM.

o Clamped, Starch - Clamped or pit silage, usually precision chopped. It is any silage that

contains starch, maize or a wholecrop. It is a silage that needs no processing and would

usually go in the wagon at the end as it mixes easily in the wagon.

o Fresh grass - Fresh grass straight from the field in a zero grazing situation that the

farmer wants to use in the TMR. It will usually be about 20% DM.

o Clamp Long chop - Silage that is of a long chop length 40mm+. It will usually be grass,

but could be clover or other green forage. It will have a DM of 25-40%. It will need a bit

longer in the wagon to break up.

Liquids

o Liquids - Any liquid that can be put in in any quantity; it will go into the mixer first.

Water.

o Molasses - Any molasses or liquid, that you can put a limited quantity in the machine. It

will go into the mixer first but it is a highly viscous product. If too much goes into the

mixer it will stall it.

Root Crops

o Chopped - Any root crops that have been prechopped, or do not need any chopping,

these will usually go in towards the end of the mix.

o Unchopped - Any root crops that need chopping, these will go into the mix first and will

be left for a few minutes before any other ingredients are added.

o Peload Unchopped - Any root crop than needs chopping before any other ingredient is

added, these will go into the mix first and will be left for a few minutes before the next

ingredient.



Concentrates

o Concentrates - Any concentrate that can be bought in bulk, it doesn‟t necessarily mean

that it has to be bought in bulk. It will be a dry product that needs to be stored inside or

in a tower. It will usually be fed at a rate over 0.5kgs/head/day.

o Premix - Concentrate premix that is made up on farm. It can include straw, minerals and

a liquid. It doesn‟t include any moist feeds or forages.

o Front load premix - Usually any type of mix that is held back for a different class of

stock. Eg. Milkers mix that is then held back to be the base of the dry cow or heifer mix.

It will usually contain a forage or moist feed, and it is not normally discharged and then

reloaded.

o Post load premix - Any premix that needs to go in directly after any liquids.

Moist Feed

o Open - Moist feed that can be stored outside, with or without being ensiled. When

clamped it can be walked on without sinking in and does not ball up in the machine, it is

usually before any forage.

o Stodgy - Moist feed that can be stored outside, usually without being ensiled. It is hard

to walk on without sinking in and will stick to your hands or boots. It will be fed at the end

of the process to stop balls from occurring in the mixer.

A good test to see if it is open or stodgy is if you can form it into a ball in your hands, then drop it onto the

floor. If it stops in a ball then it is stodgy, if it completely falls apart or cannot form into a ball then it would

be an open moist feed

Minerals/Additives

o Minerals/Additives - Any type of feed that is usually bought in small bags (20-25kgs)

and fed at less than 0.3kgs/head/day.

Water

o Water - Water, it can be put in in any quantity, it will go into the mixer first, but after any

other liquid.

Welcome - This gives your Latest FCE and a brake down of the Average, Pace National Average,

Top 25% and Best 25% in the world of FCE, Total Feed and Energy Corrected Milk. It also displays

the current milk price and feed costs based on national average or the individual customer‟s average.

How To - The „how to‟ tab gives you a description on how to use the site, also it has the Video

Tutorial seen In “Figure 35”, which shows you in more detail about the uses of the site.

Trends - Are a number of Charts which display FCE, Yield, DMI, Milk Price, FAT and Protein

graphically overtime. You can select each individual days, months or years to give you a comparison

of data required.

Benchmark Detail - Gives you the RPM‟s average of the market. You can select each individual

days, months or years to give you a comparison of data required.

Feed Utilisation - You can see all the data belonging to the individual diets, ingredients and groups

which has being used on your farm. You can select each individual days, months or years to give

you a comparison of data required.

Feed Accuracy - Displays the Actual quantity V‟s Target quantity of ingredients used on the farm.

PACE Training Videos To help users understand and makes changes to the software, Keenan‟s have created a variety of PACE

training videos which can be accessed from the DTM menu at the bottom under Keenan – Pace Training

The Video Menu is based on the same menu structure as the the DTM menu.



Introduction to beef menu The beef rpm which stands for Ration Performance Monitor, allows you and the nutritionist to see exactly

how well you cattle are performing on the diet. This is also known as the rumen check because it gives

us feedback about the ration from the cattle.

To calculate the production figures for beef we have two options of using either the snapshot tool or this

by using the batch selection



Beef – Snapshot Production The snapshot tool is used when you are taking a snapshot of the number of animals and for. It is best

used when there are constant numbers of animals coming in and leaving the farm.

For example if you sell 10 animals per week any buy in 10 animals week you will always have the same

number of animals on the farm will remain the same but those animals will be constantly changing.

Entering Snapshot Production Data

To enter Production Data the following steps is required:

7) From the Menu click on Keenan – Mech Fiber Beef, then click on Beef - Snapshot Production,

8) At this point the screen will refresh displaying Snapshot Production Data entry fields


a) Enter Production date Date that you want to run the Rumen Check for.

b) Group Name Select the group that you would like to do the Rumen Check for.

c) Type Of Ration What type of ration the animals are getting fed.

d) No Of Animals In Group Number of animals in that group

e) Average Weight of Group Average weight of the group, ideally this should be weighed, if not

put an estimate average for the group

f) Daily Live Weight Gain Average daily live weight gain, ideally this should be weighed, if not

put an estimate average for the group

g) Weighed / Estimated Are the average weigh of group and daily liveweight gain estimates

or Weighed Values.



h) Animal Sold State Are the animals sold on a liveweight or a deadweight basis.

If Live weight – only the 2 liveweight reference boxes are available

for editing

If Dead weight – only the 3 deadweight reference boxes are

available for editing

i) Price per Kilo/lb Live Only available if liveweight is selected

Price per kilo / lb of liveweight for the last lot of animals that were

sold

Beef – Batch Data The batch selection is used when we have the same animals on the farm. This is most likely the suckler

situation where the animals will come in at the start of winter and then they will go out as fat or turnout for

the following summer. For the batch selection the work it is important that the animals do remain the

same.

The benefit that the batch selection has is a can track animal performance within the batch and have very

accurate feed efficiency figures. It also has the benefit of predicting figures for growth rate based on the

animal type weight sex and breed by recording the quantity of feed that has been fed.

Entering Batch Data

To enter Batch Data the following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Keenan – Mech Fiber Beef, then click on Beef - Batch Data,

2) At this point the screen will refresh displaying Current Batch List and New Batch entry forum, to

add new Batch you are required to fill out the fields;

a) Name This is the name of the group, this can be anything you want to be.

E.g. spring born heifers 2010 , cull cows.

b) Description This is optional and will allow you to enter any extra information that

you like in regard to that group.

c) Calculated By This is a drop-down box for either group or yard.

d) Group This will bring up a list of all the groups you have allocated in your

DTM software. You need to select the group that you wish to



choose. Only do this if you have selected. Calculated by group.

e) Yard This will bring up a list of all the yards you have allocated in your

DTM software. You need to select the yard that you wish to

choose. Only do this if you have selected. Calculated by yard.

f) Ration Type (Stage) In this drop-down box you can select the type of ration that the

animals are on currently.

g) Date This is the data you want to start recording the animals from.

h) No of Animals This is the number animals currently are in the group.

i) Maturity Class This is where you can select the maturity class of the animals.

Early-this is for native breeds of animals e.g. Angus.

Medium-this is for small frame continental animals and all

dairy cross animals e.g. Limousin.

Late-this is for all large frame continental animals e.g.

Charolais.

B and W-this is for pure dairy animals.

j) Sex Choose the sex of the animal, either heifers, castrates, cows or

bulls.

k) Unit Weight This is where you can select either kilograms or pounds.

l) Starting Weight Date This is the date for starting the weight.

m) Starting Weight This is the starting weight.

n) Previous Growth Rate This is the previous growth rate of the animals of that group.

3) After all required fields are entered, click on Save;

Once saved, the batch will be attached to the Batch List, you can delete a batch by clicking on the trash

can and you can edit batch by click edit



Beef – Batch Weigh-In

To enter Batch weight-in the following steps is required:

1) From the Menu click on Keenan – Mech Fiber Beef, then click on Beef - Batch Weigh-In,

2) At this point the screen will refresh displaying Current Batch List and Weigh-In Data entry

forum,

3) Too a new weigh-in you are required to do the following:

a) Select the batch name by clicking on , the line will become

highlighted;

b) Once you have the batch selected, you can proceed with entering the Production date

and Animal Weight and Click Add.

c) The weight gain and growth rate will then be displayed.

Note:

If you have entered in the wrong production date or animal weigh you can edit it by click on

then clicking update
