TheNewManuscriptsoftheVadhiilaSchool

ThesetofmanuscriptsinMalayalamscriptthatarethemainsubjectofthisarticleweretakenphotographbymeduringaseriesoffieldresearchesbetween1992and1997incentralKerala ,thesouthernmoststateofIndia.

Asaresultofmyfieldsurvey ,almostallofthenewVadhillamanuscriptswerefoundamongtheprivatecollectionsoftheNambudiribrahminfamilieswhobelongtothegotraofVadhilla.AsIseeit ,alloftheimportantVadhillamanuscriptswhichhavebeenpreservedintheManuscriptLibrariesinvariousdistrictsofIndia , forinstance , Madrasう ThivandrumうBaroda， PoonaandHoshiarpurhavebeenidentifiedeitherasthedirectorindirectcopiesof 七he

manuscriptsofthesetwocollections.TheyaretheNe<;lumpiHiMana(H Ol脱)

andtheKitaiuiasseriMana.BothofthemarelocatedattheoutskirtareaofIr i負.j alakkuta， whichisanoldtownofhistoricalimportanceandwasoncethecentreoftheancientKeralaculture.

twelfthcenturyastheinscriptionofthePadmanabhaTempleofTrivandrumseemstotestify.Sincethatperiod ぅ acaryαs ofthesefamilieshavebeenhighlyrespectedbythekingsofTravancoreandtheyhavebeencontinuouslyapｭpointedastheleadingpriestsofthePadmanabhatemple. Evennow ぅthe

headofthefamilyisinvitedtopresideattheyearlyfestivalofthePadmaｭnabhatempleofTrivandrum.

PresentdistributionofthesurvivingschoolsofVedainIndiashowsthatalloftheVedicschoolssurvivinginKeralabelongtotheoldestschoolsinhistoricalperspective:SaIikhayanaschoolofthe~gveda う JaiminTyaoftheSamavedaandtheBaudhayanaandVadhulaoftheYajurveda. AmongtheYajurvedinsofKeralaNambudiri うmost ofthembelongtotheschoolofBaudhayanaandtheVadhulasareminorinnumbers.l

Nowadaysぅonly fifteenVadhulafamilieshavebeenlivinginKeralaandtheirdistributionisconfinedtothecentralpartofKerala.2

AccordingtotheinformationgivenbySrTVasudevanNambudiri , theauthoroftheVadhulaka-Cata 早早民which isapracticalmanualoftheGrhyaritualsoftheVadhulatradition うthe lastperformanceoftheSomayagaamongtheY 瓦dhulakas washeldbyhisfatherSomayajipadNambudiriduring1920's.Sincethen うthe traditionoftheSrautaritualamongtheVadhulakashavebeenobsolete ヲand tothisday うnone oftheV瓦dhulakas seemtokeepthepracticalknowledgeoftheSrautaritualofthisschool.ImayreluctantlysaythatthelivingSrautatraditionoftheVadhulaschoolhasalreadydiedout ,whilesomeoftheGrhyarituals(especiallylife-ritualsortheriteofpassagelikeinitiation , rna凶ageぅrites forthedead)havebeenkeptalive

ExceptforoccasionalreferencesinthecommentariesorinthelistsofVedicschools ,likeCara 早avyuhas ぅthe actualtextoftheV瓦dhula schoolhadbeenlittleknowntotheVedicscholars. ItwastheeffortofPro f. 羽Tillem

Calandwhocametonoticetheexistenceofmanuscriptsbelongingtothelongforgottenschoolandheimmediatelystartedtostudytheminearly1920 冶 . CalandpublishedinthesamedecadeexcerptsoftheSrautasutraandAnvakhyana.Buthecouldnotpublishtheeditionoftheentiremanuscriptwhichhecouldobtain. TheMS.wasacopyoftheMadrasManuscript ,abbreviatedasM inmydescriptionoftheMSS.

Fiftyyearsafterthisdiscovery うit isProfessorMichaelWitzelwhoreｭvivedtheinterestintothisarchaicandimportantschoolofYajurvedabyexploringfurthermaterialsoftheschoolinhisextensivefieldresearchofVedicmanuscriptsamongtheimportantmanuscriptlibrariesofIndia.Beｭinginstigatedbyhisexcellentarticleof1975 3

うtwo editionsoftheV忌dhulaSrautasiltrafinallycameoutwithinthesetenyears.Oneistheeditionofthefirstprapath αkα by Dr.M.SparreboomandProf.J.C.Heesterman¥andtheotheristhatofProf.B.B.ChaubeyofHoshiarpur5

InspiteoftherecentstudiesandeditionsoftheVadhillastitr 九there

stillhasremainedmuchtobedoneforthetextualstudiesofthisschool.Thefirstreasonisthequalityoftheavailablemanuscripts.IncludingCaｭland うs publications うall ofthepreviouseditionscouldutilizeonlyonesinglemanuscriptMう that is うthe Madrasmanuscriptanditssecondarycopies.

Aswillbeshowninthediagramofstemmagiven below , allthemanuscriptspreviouslyknown(M う cι) belongtothesamesinglerecenｭsion.AndM wastheonlyextensivemanuscriptinthisrecension.However う

whathasputthescholarsmosttroublewiththemanuscriptsofthisrecenｭsionisthefataldefectoflacunaecausedbythebrokenstateoftheoriginalmanuscript ,whicharetobeobservedinalmostalloftheleaves.Thecorruptreadingsandthefragmentedstateofleavesdonotallowresearcherstoreｭconstructtheoriginalreadings.Inanotherwords , thedefectivestateofthetextmayleadeventheexpertresearchertomisunderstandthetrueintentionoftheoriginaltext.

ThishadbeenthesituationbeforeIstartedtosearchthepresentstateoftheVadhtilatraditionandtriedtolookforthepossibilityoffindingoutnewmanuscriptswhichwouldenableustodrasticallychangethesituationofsourcematerials.

Beingfortunateenough , Icouldfind うafter aseriesoftrialanderror う

thenewVadhtilamanuscripts ,whicharelistedbelowunderthetitleofNewManuscripts.Herearelistedonlythoseofthreeclassesofbasictextsofthe

Itisdi 伍cult tofixthedatesoftheseMalayalammanuscripts うmainly forlackoffirmlydatablematerials.Allofthemanuscriptsdonotgiveanydateatallnoranyhistoricalreferenceswhichwouldprovidegooddatingcriteria.6

Severalpointsaretobenoticedinthisdiagram.First うthe originalmanuscriptofthepreviouslyknownmanuscripts

(M ヲ*M c,0 ,H)wasfoundbymeamongtheKitaiuiasseriManacollectionin1994.IthadbeenregardedaslostsincethetimeofitsbeingcopiedintotheMadrasmanuscript.ItisnamedasK1 ・ 7 Althoughthisistheoriginalof

theMadrasmanuscript(M)andH う the presentstateofK1hasbeendecayedtofurtherextentthanitwasin1922-23whenitwastranscribedintotheMS.M withDevanagarIscript.

Furt her , IcoulddiscoveraMalayalamcopyofK1in1997againamongtheKitailli.asseriManacollection. ThediscoveryofthismanuscripthasshedanewlightintoseveralunsolvedquestionsconcerningthesequenceofmanuscriptsandthelostleavesofK1andM.FurtheradvantageofthismanuscriptliesinthefactthatithaslesslacunaethanbothK1andManditoffersagoodbasisforformingconjectureinmakingthecriticaltext.ThismanuscriptwaswrittenwiththeyoungerMalayalamscriptanditseemsthatK4waswrittenatleastseveraldecadesbeforethemakingofMadrasmanuscript.

Secondly ヲwith thediscoveryofnewmanuscripts うan anotherrecensionofmanuscriptshasbeenaddedtothepreviousmanuscriptgroup ,theK1reｭcension.AndthenewlyfoundmanuscriptsgenerallyshowlessdamageoftheleavesthanthatofK1recension.So,thesetworecensionswellcomplementeachotherforreconstructingthemoreoriginaltextoftheVadhillaschool.

Thefinalandthemostimportantpointisthatthemanuscriptgroupoftherightsideofthestemmadiagram うwhich comprisesN1 ぅK 2ぅK 3 andtheirsecondarycopies うshares acommondistinctivefeature.TheSrautasiltradescriptionofthisgroupcomestoendwiththedescriptionoftheAgni 科oma ，

whichisregardedasamodeltypeoftheSomarituals.8 ItaccompaniesthedescriptionofthePravargya , whichisassignedιhe placelastbutoneinthewholeSrautasiltraintheK1recensionMSS.group.9

Therearethreebasictexts ぅso farknownintheVadhilIaschool , whichbelongtotheVedicperiod: the Srautasiltra , theGrhyasiltraandtheAnvakhyana(ortheBrahma 早a). ThemanuscriptsbelongingtoK1recensionarethree:K1ぅK 4 andM.lD

AsallthemanuscriptsutilizedforthepreviousstudiesareM(=MadrasMS.)anditssecondarycopies ,IputthepagenumbersofM ontheleft-mostcolumn.Asbeingreferredtoabove ,K1istheMS.writtenintheMalayalamscript ,beingtheoriginalfromwhichM wasdirectlycopiedinMadrasduring1922-23.K4isananotherMalayalamMS.whichwasalsodirectlycopiedfromK1probablysometimeinthelastcentury.

CursoryinvestigationintothesethreeMSS. うnamely K1 ぅK 4 andM ,hasrevealedthefollowingfacts:

Inaddition ,K1hasafloatingfoliowhichisplacedafterthefolioNo.20.Astheleftendofthefoliohasextensivelybeendamaged , wearenotabletoidentifythefolio-numberwhichisusuallywrittenontheleftendofrecto.ThiswasnotcopiedbyM.TheplaceofthecorrespondingfolioofK4seemstoindicatethattheoriginalnumberofthefolioisNo.l1.

ItisalsointerestingtonotethattheVadhlilaGrhyaslitracontainssomeesotericdoctrineofaBrahma早a styleinthebeginningofthePitrmedhasection. ThisstyleisratherrarewiththeordinaryGrhyasutra. Afterdeｭscribingthesyndromeofapersonwhoisapproachingdeath , thedoctrinestartsontherelationshipbetweenthesoul , whichiscalled'puru§a' , andthelife-breathscalled'pra'!} αゲ ; thiscouldbecomparedwithsomefamousUpani 号ad passages.Infact ぅsome passageshaveparallelswiththoseoftheJaiminlyaUpani~ad Brahma早a4.27. Thisfact うtherefore ， maysuggestthattheseVadhulapassagesmayhavebeenrecitedforapersonbeingonhisdeathbed.

WhatmakesusfeelstrangewiththeGrhyamaterialoftheVadhulaschoolisthedescriptionofseveralriteswhichdirectlyfollowthefinalportionoftheGrhyatext.20

TheseritesarenotGrhyaonesandtheycouldberegardedasthepreｭliminarycomponentsoftheSrautaritual.Thefirstone ,Artvijyaisthesacｭrifice ピs receptionofrtvijs , whoarethepriestscomingfortheperformanceoftheSrautaritual.

Thelastoneinthisseriesofritesisapeculiarrite.Itisakindofancesｭtorritualwithanofferingtothreegenerationsofancestorsofthesacrificer.Itsdescriptionshowsacloseparalleltotheso-calledUpavasathagaviortheGopitryajiiawhichiselsewhereknownonlyintheBaudh 瓦yana Srautaslitra(11.8-11). Thelatterisperformedontheprecedingdayofthemainritｭual(up αuαsαthα) oftheAgnyadheyaritual.ComparisonbetweenthesetwoparallelsfoundinthetwooldschoolsoftheYajurvedaclearlyshowsthattheyarealmosttwinritualswithminorvariations.TheBaudhayanaschoolseemstoprescribetheritualoftheUpavasathagaviasthecomponentpartofthepreliminaryritualsoftheAgnyadheya.Ontheotherhand うthe placeofthisritualinthedescriptionoftheVadhlilasutraisnotclear , atfirstsight ,sincetheAgnyadheyasutraofthisschoolsimplyreferstothe0百'ering fortheancestorsontheUpavasathaday;itdoesnotgivefulldescriptionofthe
