Notes from the Advancement Office

HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNIS HANOI! 25 YEARS OF “LEARNING TO INSPIRE” This week we celebrated the ‘first ever week of school’ at UNIS Hanoi after it opened its doors on September 19, 1988 with 12 students. And as we ‘started’ our 25th year, we have more than 1000 students from 65 nationalities with more than 40 mother tongues spoken. Our goal was to mark the institutional milestone in a meaningful way for our students reflecting our ‘goals not events’ theme for the year and so UNIS Hanoi celebrated its ‘birth’ focusing on a Week of Peace. Our students from Discovery through to Grade 12 focused on what peace means to them ahead of International Peace Day which falls in UNIS Hanoi’s ‘first week’ of school on September 21. And the theme provided the inspiration for the community artwork that will be created by all the students between now and UN DAY on October 23 - the first official all community celebration in our 25th Year.

A WEEK OF PEACE

September 19 – Our ‘First Day of School’ – started with High School Assembly when the students were taken on a historical tour of UNIS Hanoi with some surprises for the Seniors who were here in Grade 1! Student Senate President Emilie Brondum-Reeh then picked up the theme and presented her Birthday Mosaic or Tile Project and the ‘big idea’ of connectivity for our students now and in the future to the UNIS Hanoi community.

The ‘First Day of School’ closed with Elementary School Assembly where the children started to share what peace means to them and the launch of our community artwork project for UN DAY – Our Peace Globe of Nations – and the children not only sang Happy Birthday to UNIS Hanoi, but enjoyed “Shuffling” together to celebrate – Enjoy the moment with them with this video:

GOALS NOT EVENTS 1. Record, celebrate and share UNIS Hanoi's history and its place in Vietnam's history, especially in connection to the work of the UN. 2. Recognize, celebrate and involve all members of our diverse UNIS Hanoi community as leaders in our institution's history and its future. 3. Confirm, celebrate and demonstrate UNIS Hanoi's position as leaders in education in Vietnam and as a centre of excellence in international schools for the future.

Notes from the Advancement Office

SEPTEMBER 20th - “The second day of school” The Middle School also provided a dramatic moment focusing our attention for our Week of Peace when they ‘Flash Mobbed’ the High Schoolers at lunchtime on Thursday! The Middle Schoolers ran out and surrounded the unsuspecting High Schoolers and then danced for peace and unfurled peace banners. Watch the Flash Mob Film capturing the moment.

THE PEACE GLOBE OF NATIONS A giant polystyrene ‘Globe’ has been carved and is hanging in our Centre for the Arts. Every child from Discovery through to Grade 5 will cover the world with paper hands on which they will each write their own definition of Peace, carrying through the theme from their Assembly. This will be completed in the next two weeks. After which time every child in the school will be asked to draw their flag (their national flag or a personal flag) and all the flags will be added to the globe. The Peace Globe of Nations will join our Rapprochement of Cultures Artwork from last year as we prepare for UN DAY.

PLEASE NOTE UN DAY WILL BE AN EARLY RELEASE DAY (13.30) FOR

ALL OUR STUDENTS FOLLOWING THE COMMUNITY CEREMONY,

ALL SCHOOL PHOTO AND ‘BIRTHDAY LUNCH’ ON OCTOBER 23.

Notes from the Advancement Office

A BIRTHDAY PRESENT TO OUR ALUMNI! During the summer – ahead of our Birthday Year – we have been reconnecting with our world wide alumni through our Get In Touch Prize Draw event. Thanks to the generosity of Vietnam Airlines we had one FREE pair of return international flight tickets to or from one of the many destinations to which Vietnam Airlines operates direct flights as the wonderful prize or Birthday Present for the summer project. And this week the winner was drawn on UNIS Hanoi’s Birthday - September 19. The lucky winner was drawn from 484 total eligible tickets by Carlos, a Grade 3 student who has the same birthday as UNIS Hanoi! And Carlos is also special because his sister, Naira, is not only an alumnus of UNIS Hanoi herself when she was here for her Grade 3, but is also 25 this year – the same age as the school!

Thank you all 484 of you who got in touch with us this summer – The best Birthday Present we could have had! We look forward to staying in touch for the next 25 years and beyond!

Dear Parents, Celebrations this week It has been a busy week, celebrating the 25th Birthday and International Peace Day. Miss Jan led the two ES assemblies this week with almost everybody wearing white to show their support for peace in our world. The children are now busy creating their ‘hands for peace’ to stick to the ‘Peace Globe of Nations’ for us to then use at UN Day in October. For the birthday Miss Sally created a party atmosphere for us in the theatre singing Happy Birthday to UNIS Hanoi and doing a ‘birthday shuffle’ with Dr Barder joining in on stage. Grade 5 School Camp Grade 5 students have spent a very enjoyable few days at V Resort for their School Camp this week. When I went to visit on Wednesday afternoon it was great to see them so relaxed and full of enthusiasm in their new environment. The evening meal we enjoyed together was the best camp food I have ever had and the Grade 5 Talent Show was certainly worth me making the journey, to see the children in a different light and displaying a whole range of skills and talents. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the accompanying staff members who ensured the children were safe and happy throughout the trip. Moon Festival Next week we are particularly looking forward to the celebration of Moon Festival – on Friday we will have a special assembly led by the students in Grades 2, 4 and 5 who take Vietnamese lessons and all students will participate in a variety of activities to celebrate this very important festival. Partnership with Parents The second training session for Class Parents was held this week and the first School Community Organisation ES Chairs and Vice Chairs then met with me to discuss how we can most effectively build the home school partnerships that are so vital in our community. Please note that on Friday 28 September at 08.30 we will be hosting the first ES Parent Forum of this academic year for any ES parent who may wish to attend. I look forward to seeing you there and answering any questions you may have. Please do remember to book your appointment with your child’s class teacher for the following week’s Parent Teacher Conferences, if you have not done so already. ( The electronic sign up is open until 19.00 on Friday 28 September.) The information exchange between home and school at this stage in the year is so important for the future planning of the teachers to understand and meet the needs of every child. Kind regards, Carole Denny, Elementary School Principal [email protected]

Notes from the Middle/High School Principal

Dear MS/HS Families, Greetings from the MSHS! The 2012-2013 school year is now more than a month old and I am pleased to report that both students and their teachers are in full academic mode and making great progress. The lazy days of summer have been replaced with a focus on learning and planning for the future. Clearly academics are our major focus at UNIS Hanoi but it is important for students to have a sense of balance in their lives. Making friends, building relationships, participating in sports or drama, learning to play a musical instrument and finding time to enjoy life are extremely important activities for our entire community (parents included!) but even more so for adolescents. You may have heard your child speak of Morning Meetings, HS Activity Day, MS Fun Day, flash mobs, and a host of other activities that are geared for community building and sometime just plain old fun? Rest assured that these “off schedule” events are carefully structured to enhance the academic side of our programme. Research confirms that students achieve higher academic results when they feel supported, have a solid network of friends, are refreshed and enthusiastic, and when stress levels are kept to a minimum. I firmly believe that students achieve more when they have healthy relationships and feel a sense of unity with their classmates. In closing, please view the “fun” side of school as an enhancement to the academic side of your child’s experience at UNIS Hanoi. After all is said and done schools are places where lifelong memories are formed…. both academically and socially. I hope to see all parents/guardians at Parent Conferences on Oct. 2/3. If for some reason you have trouble signing up for

time slots using your ISIS account please feel free to contact my office and we will be happy to assist you.

Warm regards, Pete Kennedy, Middle/High School Principal [email protected]

ECC Mother Tongues

Every Thursday in the Early Childhood Centre, between 14:50 and 15:10 parents and children come together for Mother Tongue time. This is a wonderful time when the students can be stretched in their own home language and enjoy stories and games from their own cultural backgrounds. Valuing, honouring and consolidating a student’s own cultural identity is an important aspect of the MT programme. In international schools where students learn from all their friends around them, this is an important aspect that can very easily be overlooked, as we enjoy the multiplicity and richness of the cultures around us. True international mindedness begins with a strong self-identity. In order to run our Mother Tongue sessions we need ongoing help of parents of all languages (including English) and sincerely appreciate all parents who volunteer their time.

Results from the World Language Survey

Last May/June UNIS Hanoi conducted a World Language Survey which was offered to all parents (Discovery-Grade 12) and students from Grades 6-9. The purpose of the survey was to gather information for UNIS Hanoi to consider when reviewing our World Language programmes. The data from the survey gives us an understanding of World Language programme preferences in our parent and student community. At UNIS Hanoi we use the term World Language to define languages other than your native language and other than English (which is the language of instruction). World Language (sometime referred to as Additional Language or Language B), refers to language instruction that is focused on the language of acquisition - a language which the student is learning, rather than a language in which they have native, or near-native fluency. At UNIS Hanoi we refer to the language which is native, or near-native, as the Mother Tongue, or Language A.

MAP Testing Updates

All Students Grades 3-8 Finish MAP Testing Our students in grades 6-8 have completed their fall MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests. All students demonstrated a positive attitude to the test and worked diligently on each of the three tests. The testing window will now be closed out and student reports will be created. Within two weeks, these reports will be available to parents through ISIS. Once the reports are ready an email will be sent to parents to explain how to access the report. A MAP Parent Information Evening will be held following the October break to help parents understand the MAP test and how to read the information contained in the report. The Parent Evening will be on October 16 starting at 6pm. More details on this information evening will be sent home closer to the date. As the MAP test is focused on growth and future student learning, we are happy to announce that our spring testing window for Elementary students (grades 3-5) will be in March 2013 and for Middle School students (grade 6-8) will be in April 2013. Additionally, our grade 3-9 students will take part in the International School’s Assessment (ISA) test in mid-October. This test will give us another piece of data to consider in supporting student learning. More details on the ISA will be sent out at the start of October. If you have any questions please contact Meagan Enticknap-Smith, Director of Learning at [email protected]

Results from the World Language Survey (Continued)

The survey listed the World Languages most often offered in international schools, and/or the languages most often suggested as a World Language that UNIS should offer. These were: Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesian, French, Spanish, Vietnamese, Hindi, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, German and Thai. There was also an option to indicate ‘Other’ to allow parents to fill in a language that was not listed. As an international school with over 60 nationalities and a diversity of opinion about what languages should be offered, it will always be a difficult challenge to satisfy everyone in terms of our World Language programmes. The results from the parent survey (where a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice were allowed in rank order) indicated that French, Mandarin and Spanish are all popular choices (either when considered as a 1st choice alone or when combined with all responses from 1st-3rd choice). Other languages where a preference was indicated in terms of 1st choice were: Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and German. The results from the student survey largely mirror that of the parent results, with the top three preferences (grade levels combined) being French, Mandarin and Spanish. Thank you to all the parents and students who completed the survey. In addition to exploring current research in this area and consulting with our benchmark schools the information from the surveys will be one piece of the puzzle that we consider. The other ‘puzzle pieces’ we need to look at include: student numbers, suitable levels/phases being available in any given language class, cost of adding another language with an enrollment that is leveling off as we reach capacity and scheduling challenges. These are questions that we will dig into this year in order to determine next steps in our World Language programmes at UNIS Hanoi. We will continue to involve parents as we move through this process. Meagan Enticknap-Smith, Director of Learning at [email protected]

IB Art News

The IB Art students enjoyed a lunchtime artist talk by well renowned French artist Lionel Descostes on Tuesday. Lionel has lived in Hanoi for over 12 years and he explained the detailed and meticulous planning involved in creating his magnificent contemporary art pieces using the traditional embroidery techniques of disadvantaged embroiders from local villages. Not only is the artist creating new vibrant contemporary art but he is also aiding to maintain threatened local craftspeople and techniques. Moon Festival Celebration. Coming Soon!

TẾT TRUNG THU

In Vietnam, there is a special festival for children which comes at the time of the harvest moon called “Tet Trung Thu”. Tet Trung Thu falls on the 15th of August according to the Lunar Calendar, therefore it is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival. This year, Tet Trung Thu is on Sunday, September 30th, 2012. The festival is awaited with great eagerness by children all over Vietnam. On this special day, children are honoured; they are reminded to be good citizens and to show love and respect for one another, as well for their country. They receive presents and special treats from their parents and relatives.

Prior to the festival, the streets are filled with a variety of brightly-coloured lanterns, balloons, masks, dragon heads, toys, and Moon cakes. On the night of the festival itself, children march through the streets playing cymbals and drums and holding lit lanterns. The lanterns are in the shapes of stars, rabbits, boats, dragons, etc… The Vietnamese children carry on this tradition by staging a parade every year in the streets, around the lakes or in their living areas. The dragon dance is often performed at this special time, as it is believed to invite festival spirits and bring good luck. There is a traditional cake called a Moon Cake on Tet Trung Thu. These cakes are made of sticky rice filled with such things as peanuts, lotus seeds, duck egg yolks, raisins, watermelon seeds, and green beans. The cakes are made in different shapes such as the moon, the earth, or even animals..etc… Across Vietnam, this is a night of singing, dancing and feasting as children and adults alike enjoy this colourful festival. When the festival is over the memories stay in the children’s hearts forever. They all aim to do their best for the year and look forward to the next Tet Trung Thu. At UNIS, we celebrate Tết Trung Thu on Friday September 28th at 9.50 with Tet Trung Thu assembly hosted by Grade 2, 4 and 5 Vietnamese students in the theatre. Students will also take part in the toy making workshop in the morning and Tet Trung Thu Party at the snack time. Teachers and students are encouraged to wear “ÁO DÀI - Vietnamese traditional dress” on the day.

College Visits, UNIS Hanoi

25 - 28 September 2012

Mark your lunch time to begin to explore your choices for universities around the world. Throughout the year, but more so in the first semester, representatives from universities/colleges will come to UNIS Hanoi to meet with interested students. Please take advantage of this great opportunity to meet with someone from their Admissions Office. Most of the time the info sessions will be scheduled at lunch time at the Library and you can bring your lunch. At the beginning of the year, most of the representatives are from American Institutions, later in the year , British, Canadian, Australian institutions will come. These representatives are coming to UNIS Hanoi because they are interested in international students. Be prepared with questions. “ I don’t know what I want to study, what should I do?”/ “What score do I need?”/ “Do you have my major?”/ “Do you have financial aids for international students?”/ “ Do you have scholarship?”… Find out as much as you can about the college before you visit. Don’t focus on name schools only, there are excellent smaller colleges that will be a better fit for you.

Chuc Son Orphanage On Saturday last week, it has been a fresh and hopeful day for me and the other students who has visited Chuc Son Orphanage. It was roughly about an hour ride to the orphanage; I was thinking about what it would look like in the bus and…. It turned out that it was quite different. As soon as we walked out of the bus, all the kids at orphanage were surrounding us; they helped carrying the food and other supplies. By Gun Hee Yoon (Grade 9)

Join us this Saturday from 9:00 until 11:30 and experience our world famous UNIS Hanoi Sausage Sizzle. As part of the Service Learning program, students will be organizing and selling your favorite food and drink items during the Saturday Soccer games throughout the year. We are located in front of the rear entrance to the Canteen. All funds raised are used to support the numerous UNIS Hanoi community projects taking place throughout the year.

Director of Advancement, Emma Silva and D-12 Service Learning Coordinator, Nick Whatley attended a special celebration with the KOTO trainees, staff and Trustee Tracey Lister.

KOTO writes: “UNIS Hanoi has been helping KOTO grow stronger and healthier now for ten years. This support comes in the form of the sporting programme that UNIS makes available to KOTO Hanoi trainees every week.

Not only does UNIS open their fantastic facilities to us, but they also provide shoes, T-shirts, transport, staff and volunteers so that our trainees can get the most out of the programme.

The sport programme is a very important part of KOTO’s focus on holistic development, fostering a healthy and active lifestyle. In fact, our trainees often comment that weekly sport activities are one of the highlights of their time at KOTO. Of course, sport also brings us into contact with others, and brings us together as a team, and a community. Without the support of UNIS, these activities and goals would not be possible.

In addition to the sport program, UNIS was alongside KOTO at our first annual Ba Vi Bike Ride in 2002, then called the “Mountain Challenge”.

Every year since then, UNIS has supported KOTO with transport, the mustering area, and registering a team in the bike ride.

From 2002 until now, over 400 street and disadvantaged youth have benefited from the relationship

with UNIS. On behalf of our trainees past and future, KOTO would like to thank UNIS for their long

standing support to make us stronger and healthier!”

High School Volleyball

This past week the APAC girl’s volleyball team had another match against HIS. This was our second match against HIS who started out strong and managed to keep the lead as our players lost a close first set 24-26. As the UNIS players worked on court positioning, offensive and defensive roles, they bounced back to win the second set. A determined HIS squad took the 3rd set to win the match. Notable performances were made by Abigail Valley for her defensive and offensive play as well as extraordinary hustle by setter Jemima Brennan. The girl’s next match is Monday, Sept. 24 at 4:00pm as they take on the MRISA Boys team in the Sports Center. Meanwhile, the MRISA boy’s team played their first match of the season this week against a strong team from HIS. The boys are coached by Mr. Andy Dutton, who is a new member of the UNIS PE staff this year. It was a tough match for the UNIS team as a number of the players are relatively new to the game of volleyball, but a good learning experience nevertheless. Keep up the hard work boys! The MIRSA Tournament this year is on November 8-11 in Cambodia. The UNIS APAC Boys team had a great opportunity to play against a very accomplished local club team on Monday. Despite losing the match 0-3, you could really see the improvements that the boys are making. The visitors provided APAC-level opposition for our team and this will definitely benefit the development of the UNIS. The APAC boys play their next game this coming Monday (Sept. 24th) vs. HIS. It should be a good match. UNIS came out on top 2-1 in their first encounter of the season. The match is scheduled to start by 4:00pm. The “Hanoi Classic” Volleyball Tournament will take place at UNIS on September 28-29. This event will involve 4 boys teams and 5 teams on the girl’s side. Matches will be played in the UNIS Sports Center starting on Friday after school and continuing all day Saturday. The tournament will feature the UNIS APAC and MRISA teams, plus guest teams from Lomonoxop High School and HIS. The championship matches are scheduled for 4pm (Girls) and 5:15pm (Boys).

Come out and support Phoenix Volleyball!

Notes from the Nurses’ Office

Conjunctivitis Please be advised of the school’s policy on conjunctivitis (pink eye). If you suspect your child has conjunctivitis please seek medical advice. Symptoms of conjunctivitis are: Red eyes

Watery discharge

A yellow or green discharge common in bacterial infections

Feeling of grit or sand

Itchy eyes

Sensitivity to light

Swollen eyelids

Crusts that form on the eyelid overnight

School policy states that students must remain out of school until there are NO further symptoms of conjunctivitis, even if antibiotic eye drops have been started.

Fever If your child has a fever of 38.0 or higher, please keep them home from school. Children can return to school when they have been fever free, without medication (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen), for 24 hours.

Vomiting/Diarrhea If your child has vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them home for 24 hours after last vomit/diarrhea episode.

Head Lice Head lice have been reported in the ES. This is a gentle reminder that frequent inspections of your child's head & the continued diligence of parents will keep lice infestations at a minimum. UNIS recommends weekly inspections using the wet combing procedure, details of this treatment can be found below, with the full policy on the school portal. Wet combing campaigns have been very successful in treating and preventing re-infestations of lice. Wet combing consists of: Wash the hair in the normal way with ordinary shampoo.

Rinse out the shampoo and put on lots of ordinary conditioner.

Comb the hair with a normal comb to get rid of tangles.

When the hair is untangled switch to the detection comb, if you do not have a lice comb, UNIS will provide one for each family, please come by the nurse’s office.

Slot the teeth of the detection comb into the hair at the roots so it is touching the scalp.

Draw the detection comb through to the tips of the hair.

Make sure that all parts of the hair are combed by working around the head.

Check the comb for lice after each stroke by wiping on a towel or rinsing in a bowl of hot water.

After you have combed the whole head, rinse out the conditioner.

If head lice are found, wet combing should be repeated every 3 days for 2-3 weeks or until no lice are found for 3 consecutive combings. Weekly combing sessions should be carried out to prevent and/or detect any re-infestation. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact UNIS Hanoi Nurses’ Office at [email protected] .
