Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that we are again approaching the end of a very busy year.
Our Year 4 students recently completed their Bike Education training. With a focus
on road safety, the children can now ride their bikes or scooters to school. Thank
you to Mr Payton for coordinating this activity and to Ms Moore, Mrs Warchulski and
Miss Overend for supporting students during the program.
Over the past few weeks we welcomed 36 new Preps to our school through their
orientation program. With a mix of new and existing families, it was lovely to watch
new friendships begin to form. We look forward to a smooth transition for our new
Sunbury West students next year.
Congratulations to the families who were lucky enough to win one of the many
prizes in our Christmas raffle this year. Our sincerest thanks to FOSW for their hard
work in coordinating this. They have spent many months sourcing prizes and as
always, our annual fundraising for the school has been successful, with the school
raising in excess of $14,000.
Thank you to our many volunteers and parent helpers who support the school in so
many ways. School Councillors, FOSW, Student Banking, Canteen Helpers and our
Kids Hope mentors are just some of the ways in which our school is supported
throughout the year. Without the assistance of these parents, guardians and
volunteers many programs and activities would not come to fruition. These
partnerships are greatly valued and appreciated.
I wish to acknowledge the extremely hard work of the staff throughout the year.
Our teachers work tirelessly to ensure the best possible learning opportunities for
children but are also highly committed to their own professional learning to build
and extend their capacity as educational leaders in a 21st Century schooling
system. Teachers across the school have been involved in extensive regional and
network professional learning initiatives. Examples include:
School Wide Positive Behaviours which focusses on a whole school approach to
student wellbeing and engagement.
Professional Learning Communities where our Instructional Team Leaders have
learnt to use evidence based inquiry and data to inform planning and scaffold
student learning.
Literacy Leaders Training which has supported our growth in best practice
teaching and learning strategies. In 2018, the school commenced its work, re-
shaping our Writing Program.
Curriculum Leaders Training where staff participated in regional forums which
focussed on the many educational state reforms and initiatives.
The SDR Middle years Numeracy Project, coordinated by myself culminated in
two years of work where 35 participants across nine Sunbury schools came
together to build transitional links and implement teaching reform in Numeracy.
I am extremely proud and grateful to all staff in the work that they do to ensure
best possible outcomes for kids.
We have a couple of staffing changes next year. Mrs. Duckworth will be retiring
after a long and fruitful career with the last 22 years having been spent at Sunbury
West. We thank Mrs. Duckworth for her dedication and commitment to state
education. She has made a significant impact on the lives of many and has made

valuable contributions to our school. We appreciate Mrs. Duckworth’s wealth of experience and love of
working with children. Mrs Duckworth has worked across all areas of the school and has helped to shape
many lives, particularly in those formative years through her work in the Prep area. We know that Mrs
Duckworth takes with her many fond memories of her life and time in the teaching profession and of the
many families she has worked with. We sincerely appreciate her hard work over the years and wish her all
the very best as she embarks on this new stage of her life.
We also say goodbye to Ms Boyce, who has taken up a position at Kismet Park Primary School. Ms Boyce
came to our school in April this year, replacing Mrs Tame. She quickly adjusted to her role in an already
established classroom and we thank Ms Boyce for all her work during this time and wish her all the best at
her new school.
Tomorrow night we celebrate our Grade 6 students’ first 7 years of schooling at their Graduation
Ceremony. As always, the students have worked hard to prepare for this evening where they share their
educational journey and memories with family and friends. Congratulations to all our Year 6 students. We
wish them well as they embark on the next phase of their education and look forward to hearing about
their many successes and achievements along the way. Sincerest thanks to the Year 6 teachers who have
spent many hours preparing for the event so that the students could have a memorable occasion to
round off their primary years of schooling.
On behalf of the staff, I extend my warmest wishes to all our families for a happy and safe holiday period.
We look forward to everyone’s return in the New Year. Classes in Years 1 – 6 resume on Thursday 31st
January. Our Preps commence on Monday 4th February.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK - 17th December
1/2 Year Summary
2018 has been a very busy year for the 1/2’s! The 1/2 teachers have
watched as their little ones have grown in learning and in making
positive decisions. They have shown respect and maturity when
attending incursions and excursions including the Post Office Walk,
CERES, Woolworths, Swimming, Milo Cricket and Tennis.
Students have learnt all about Sunbury West’s new school values and
demonstrate daily that they can make decisions considering the values.
They have learnt about the continents of the world, traditions, culture
and the people that live on Earth.
A strong focus for the 1/2’s has been articulating their
reasoning in their learning. Every student has become more confident
when speaking in front of their class and all show encouragement when
their classmates are doing so. The 1/2 teachers are so proud of every
student and their personal learning! We wish them good luck for 2019!

What did the Grade 3/4 students enjoy this year…..
What have the Year 5/6’s been up to this year?
The first major thing we did this year was the house swimming carnival it was great fun and it went pretty
swimmingly. We all tried our best but it was Boeing that came out on top. The champion boy was Angel
Vujasinovic and the champion girl was Emily Kristic. The Year sixes also got their prep buddy’s at the start of
year and it was great meeting and talking to them. Then we had the house athletics which was also incredibly
fun. We had quite a lot events that we had that day such as the 800 meter, 100 meter, the 200 meter, shot
put, discus, and long jump to name a few. Angel Vujasinovic And Grace Azzopardi were the champion boy and
girl and Hercules was the winning house, to finish off our sports carnivals we had cross country. We had to run
a long way but we all still enjoyed it the winning house was Boeing. Angel Vujasinovic And Grace Azzopardi
were the champion boy and girl, jeez Angel doesn't slow down does he.
Next was Sovereign Hill, and in our opinion the best of our excursions, the first thing we did there was pan for
gold. It was very hard to find some gold In fact I don’t think anyone found any gold. We also did a activity
called history is a wonderful place but you wouldn’t want to live there. A man taught us about the 1800s, what
Sovereign Hill used to look like what people dressed like what people did, heck they even told us that they
used to poop in pots. After that we lined up to go in the red hill mine adventure one by one we went down
the long stairs. When we were down in the mine we watched a video of the golden nugget but it wasn’t just a
golden nugget it was the biggest golden nugget in the world after the video we went back outside and had
lunch. And then we got some time to shop and went back to school.
Then we had Winter Sports, a day in which all the 5/6s participated the sports were soccer t ball netball and
football. The footballers and netballers won the pendant. And continuing the sports theme we bowl into sum-
mer sports, the sports you could choose from were cricket basketball, softball and volleyball. Cricket and bas-
ketball managed to take home the pendant.
Next came Sunbury West On Show in which the students of the 5/6 area did 3 dances from the music of u
can't touch this, the ketchup song and whip nae nae. We watched the AMANASKA around the world in 80 day
performance. Many of the students enjoyed the song and the layering of music. We did lawn bowls at the
Sunbury bowling club we learnt many different games and we all had fun.
Next we did the Colour Fun Run which was a fun way of getting exercise, we were sprayed with different col-
ours of corn starch so we looked like rainbows.
We went to Sunbury College Show Off when we got there we listened to some students music there was jazz
rock and pop. We also went to the fashion show and we saw many different kinds of styles. Lastly we went
into the library to see the art gallery.
Finally is something that actually hasn’t happened yet but the 5/6s are going to go to Reading Cinemas to see
The Grinch, we are all very excited!
