Have you ever watched a llama and a camel side by side? The llama is a close relative of the camel, similar in many ways, although the mostnoticeable difference is that the llama does not have a hump. Llamas are known fortheir spitting and are native to South America. Like camels, people use them forcarrying heavy loads. In the biblical days, animals like camels and llamas were oftenused in dry areas because of their ability to travel long distances with heavy loads. However, in modern times, horses are the most common source, aside from machinery,to carry heavy loads.

Did you know that a llama can carry a weight of up to 75 pounds over 20 miles in a singleday? Llamas are generally docile and willing pack animals, but if you overload a llama,it will lie down and refuse to move until its load is lessened.

Does that remind you of another animal? What about a donkey? When we think ofstubborn animals, we usually think of donkeys. This is where we get the saying, "He is asstubborn as a donkey."

However, unlike the donkey, we think of llamas as intelligent creatures who know andunderstand how much they can handle. Can you think of a time when using thephilosophy of the llama might come in handy?

Perhaps you, like many others, can recognize when you have taken on too much weight, too many hobbies, too many friends, and too many activities. Too much of anything cancause you to fail because you are spreading yourself too thin or taking on too much atone time. It might be wise to think like a llama, and refuse to take on more than you canhandle.

The White Coat

Retelling of the Story"The Coat of many Colors"

Tiil Storyworld 6

The King of Sais had many sons. His son, Heshoh, was one of the few who understood the scrolls of the many kings that came before his father. He was wise, cunning, and witty; and he always helped his father ensure the kingdom was happy and successful. Heshoh doubled the crop and their income. He also increased the kingdom’s allies. For his wondrous efforts, his father gave him a white coat.

One day while searching through the archives, Heshoh found a prophecy that foretold the coming of a king named The White Coat. Heshoh gasped as he looked over at the article of clothing his father had just given him.

“It can’t be,” he whispered to himself.

He continued to read the scroll, his enthusiasm growing exponentially with each word. The king would be the youngest of twelve, but would rise up and become a powerful king that saved his family and his country.

Heshoh rolled up the scroll and hurried to his father and brothers to tell them what he had uncovered. To be sure they did not doubt him, Heshoh gave them the scroll so they could read it for themselves. When they were all done, they looked up to find Heshoh staring at

Tiil Storyworld 7

them expectantly.

“Well? Do you see it?” Heshoh asked.

“See what?” one of the brothers replied.

“I think the scroll is talking about me,” Heshoh exclaimed. “I’m the youngest son, AND dad gave me a white coat. I think the scroll is predicting that I would be the next king!”

Before Heshoh had completed his explanation, all his brothers groaned and sighed collectively. They didn’t like what Heshoh was going on about.

“You’re just gloating, Heshoh,” his youngest brother said. “You’re trying to set yourself up to be the next king.”

The eldest brother, Hadi, had a different concern than the others. Heshoh’s gloating did not bother him at all. What DID bother him was that HE wanted to be king, and past traditions always chose the eldest son to be the heir to the throne.

“I’m sorry, Hadi, but I don’t think you should be king,” Heshoh explained. “I don’t think you’re just or fair. You wouldn’t bring the country any profit either.”

Heshoh’s comment angered Hadi. He was ready to strike his brother when their father spoke up. All he had to do was shout one word, “Enough!” Then their foolishness abated...for the moment. When Hadi was sure their father couldn’t hear them, he leaned in close to Heshoh.

“I’ll kill you before you have the chance to be king,” he whispered.

After hearing this threat, Heshoh hurried off.

Hadi convinced his other brothers that they too should take what was rightfully theirs. None of them wanted to go as far as killing their own brother. So Hadi suggested they come up with some other plan that would yield the same results without them having to get their hands dirty.

A few days later, they figured out what to do: they framed Heshoh for killing another man. Sadly, the King’s hands were tied. The law was very clear on this matter: a life for a life.

“When it is done, bring proof that the sentence was carried out,” the king said.

However, the brothers still didn’t want Heshoh’s blood on their hands. So they came up with another plan.

That night, they stripped Heshoh of his white coat and sold him into black market slavery on a boat that was headed for the Island. They took his white coat, soaked it in pig’s blood, and gave it back to a guard.

“Give this to the king at once. Tell him that Heshoh is dead,” Hadi said.

When the guard delivered the blood soaked coat to the king, he instantly went into mourning. The palace went dark for 90 days as the king attempted to gain forgiveness from his wife for killing their son.

During the journey, the boat was attacked by pirates. Thinking quickly on his feet, Heshoh managed to catch them in the fishermen’s net and set fire to their boat.

Upon his return, Captain Dasoo decided to spare Heshoh from being sold, choosing instead to

Tiil Storyworld 8

hire him as the overseer of his lands. When Captain Dasoo saw how much money Heshoh had made him, he put him in charge over every man in his house.

As Heshoh became a respectable man in their community, Captain Dasoo’s daughter asked for Heshoh to be her husband. The Captain’s wife was furious, since Heshoh was still technically a slave. She demanded he get rid of him and that he should never return. With a heavy heart, the Captain told Heshoh he had to leave.

Now unemployed, Heshoh was condemned to work odd jobs, until one of his customers recommended him to the King of Asiatic who was visiting.

At first, the King despised the stranger, until he was told that Heshoh could help him understand two recent dreams he’d had. The king was so happy with Heshoh, that he made him the new ruler over a number of great lands. Those lands included his former home, Sais, where his father and brothers still lived.

It was not long before a famine fell upon the lands Heshoh ruled. However, Heshoh was smart and had prepared for the famine. He had stored enough grain, seed, and

Tiil Storyworld 9

food to feed all of his people, even those who did not heed his warning to save up for such desperate times.

When the King of Sais heard that the new great ruler had what he needed to save his lands, he and his sons went to ask him for help. But Heshoh begged for His attention.

“Father, do you not recognize your own son?” Heshoh asked him.

Suddenly, the King broke down in joy when he realized his youngest son was still alive.

After reuniting with his brothers, Heshoh forgave them for what they had done. In return, they thanked him for saving their lands and their lives. His father, once again, had a special white coat made and gave it to him. He was then known to his people as the King with the White Coat, because he was able to foresee and overcome obstacles to save their country.

Once there was a Bald Knight, who kept his affliction hidden with the use of a wig made from the hair of a man who had a glorious set of locks but, when he lost them, felt no shame. The man gave it to the Bald Knight because he knew how distraught the warrior was.

The Bald Knight’s deception was successful. Throughout the entire kingdom, his hair was envied by men and women alike. Men had an extra reason to be jealous; his gorgeous hair made all the wom-en flock to him whenever he rode his horse through town.

“It isn’t fair that he wins their hearts merely because he was lucky enough to have beautiful hair!” the men lamented.

Their wish was granted one day when the Bald Knight went out to hunt with some friends. A strong gust of wind blew off his hat and wig. Once his companions realized the truth, they exploded into laughter. In an attempt to save face, the Bald Knight joined in the glee.

“What a marvel it is that hairs that are not mine should fly from me, forsaking the man on whose head they grew!” the Knight chuckled.

Thy pride is but a prologue to thy shame.

Some people say that the next door dog

And mine are just the same.

They say the only difference is

Mine has a different name.

But for a million dollars down

And fifty million more

I wouldn’t trade my little dog

For the little dog next door.

He may look just the same to you

He may be just as fine

But, the next door dog is the next door dog

And mine is -mine.

John

Lennon

Paul

McCartney

It is unlikely that you are ever going to find a more famous musical duo in the world, living or not. John Lennon and Paul McCartney met in the late 1950’s, and from there they embarked on their own “magical mystery tour” with The Beatles that lasted until 1969. During this time, the team of Lennon and McCartney published close to 200 songs, most of which are considered rock classics today; many are still popular with rock and roll fans of all ages. Some of their biggest hits

include: Hey Jude, Revolution, Help, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

While they did not always work together on writing songs, you will notice that they both receive writing credit for all of the songs they created while “The Beatles” were still a group. The pair experimented with song writing, moving from pop to psychedelic, even heavier sounds. One of Lennon and McCartney’s popular experimental pieces is Revolution Number 9.

Following the breakup of The Beatles, both Lennon and McCartney went on to have successful solo careers. McCartney is still writing and performing to sold-out crowds today. Sadly, the world lost Lennon in 1980, when Mark David Chapman shot him outside of his home in New York City. But his legend and music live on in the hearts of millions of fans.

Famous Duet

Tiil Storyworld 23

A Traveler hired a mule to carry him to a distant place, with the Owner of the animal accompany-ing them for this ride. It was not long into their journey before the day grew intensely hot. Sweat poured down the faces of both men, and it became harder and harder for them to breathe. When the sun reached its highest spot in the sky, the Traveler stopped to rest. He sought shelter from the heat under the shadow of the mule.

Unfortunately, this method afforded protection for only one person, which caused a problem when the Traveler and Owner both tried to claim it. It wasn’t long before a violent dispute arose between the two men as to who had the right to claim the shelter.

“Let’s not be ridiculous. I allowed you to rent the mule ONLY,” the Owner bellowed, “NOT his shad-ow!”“You fool! By hiring the services of the animal,” the Traveler asserted, “I also hired its shadow!”

It wasn’t long before the quarrel turned from words to blows. While the two men fought, the mule-galloped off with neither the Traveler nor Owner noticing its departure. In quarreling about the shadow, we often lose the substance.
