From Our President

Hello Vienna Elementary Families!

It is so hard to believe that we have been in school for over a month!! And what a busy month it has been – Open House, Curriculum Night, Independence Day, Watch D.O.G.S. kick-off – and so much more!! I continue to be amazed by the Spirit of Vienna as our community has shown EXCITEMENT, PATIENCE, COOPERATION and GENEROSITY as a new school year has gotten into full swing. Vienna Elementary is a one-of-a-kind school and I hope everyone notices that every day.

Your PTA is excited to share this first edition of Tiger Prints with our community. There are so many wonderful things going on at our school. One of our goals as a PTA is to keep our families informed of upcoming events and the many ways that they can get involved and make a difference for our school community. Whether you send in a snack for our teachers, spend 30 minutes making copies, or chair a committee that plans a major event – the contribution of each and every family is important to our school.

From Our Principal

Be a Part of that Tiger Pride

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! We are so excited to begin the new year so strong. I personally have enjoyed the opening as a second year principal. Getting year one behind me makes all the difference. Though it sounds like a cliché, Vienna is like a big family. I heard it over and over when I first started, but it wasn’t until I lived it last year that I truly saw how true it is. And like any family not everything is perfect, but because everyone is willing to pull together and help, it kind of is perfect.

Being a Part of That Tiger Pride, continued from page 1 I would like to share our school’s goals for the upcoming year and invite you as a family member to help us. Our staff has agreed to focus on literacy this year. In our School Improvement Plan (SIP) we have stated we will strengthen our Balanced Literacy Framework, integrate literacy into all subjects, and improve our student’s love of reading. This last one is where I’d like your help. We have seen the pressure to perform on assessments put a strain on the joy of learning to read. We are committed to pump some life back into it. Make literacy your family’s goal for this school year. Share with your kids the enjoyment you gain from reading. Invite them to discuss an article you read or a book you are reading. Ask them about what they are reading; encourage them to read more about that subject or by that author. Visit the library together either with a purpose (research or school related work) or to browse and soak up the vibe of being surrounded by great literature. If your child sees you enjoying reading he or she will share that joy. Thanks for helping us by helping your child. You can spread the love of reading to the larger Vienna family by following our Instagram page @ViennaElementary. Please post pictures of you and/ or your kids reading together. If you post a picture tag us @ViennaElementary and use the #TigersRead so we can repost it. Read on!

Science Fair News: It’s Science Fair time! What an exciting time for our budding scientists to experiment and learn from documenting the scientific process. For this year, we are encouraging all students to participate in the science fair but will not require science projects for any grade. Please encourage your child to participate. We were so proud of our fifth grade student who WON the district science fair last year! We will send a K-2 winner and a 3-5 winner to the WSFCS District Science Fair to represent us in January. ALL Vienna students participating will have a special reward and receive extra credit towards their science grade. School system guidelines, general science fair information, and a scoring rubric will be sent home in Take-Home Tuesday in a couple of weeks. All classrooms (K-5) will be teaching the scientific method to our students and integrating it into their science instruction. Should you desire more guidance, I’d be happy to meet with you ([email protected]). If there are a number of people, I will schedule a time for us all to gather to discuss science fair projects. DUE DATES: Monday, December 5th: 3,4,5, Science Projects Due Tuesday, December 6th: K, 1, 2 Science Projects Due Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. DIRECT DONATION:

The PTA Direct Donation Drive has reached its halfway point. THANK YOU to those who have donated. We have made great progress toward our goal of $25,000, but still have a ways to go. So far we have raised $15,151.36 and 32% of our student body has participated.

One of Vienna's greatest strengths is its community. And as such, 100% participation and $25K are attainable goals. ALL donations matter! Every dollar counts! So I want to encourage you to donate TODAY – and make a strong statement of support to our kids, our teachers and our community. Teacher training, student incentives, classroom technology support, classroom materials, Dr. Seuss Night, Fall Fest & the Cultural Celebration, educational materials and playground equipment - ALL these things and more are funded with your PTA donations.

This year, our focus is on Improving our Outdoor Environment by adding additional playground equipment, sunshades and a nature trail. The last time that this area was improved was ’11-’12 when PTA added the track and new equipment. Our school has grown more than 25% since then.

We also have an exciting participation competition. The 1st class to 100% wins their choice of Breakfast For Lunch from Chick-fil-A or $150 credit to the spring book fair. ALL classes that reach 100% will enjoy a Bounce/Obstacle Course Recess event and their teacher will be entered into a drawing for a reserved Parking Spot! Also - all families who donate $100 or more will be entered into a drawing for three reserved parking spaces at Field Day. Direct Donation Contact: Danielle Lamphier [email protected]

Tiger Bucks Store Tiger Bucks is an incentive program for our K-3rd graders. Students earn Tiger Bucks in their classrooms for things like good behavior and acts of kindness, and use this "money" to purchase items from the Tiger Bucks store. We set up this store in the cafeteria a few mornings most months (8:20-10:15 a.m.), and students come with their classes to shop for fun treats. The store is staffed by volunteers who help the almost 500 students select and pay for their items. We also accept donations of small toys, pencils, etc. that could be used to merchandise the store. Contact Erin Amrich if interested in volunteering or donating items. [email protected]

Our Watch D.O.G.S. program “Dads/male role model of Great Students” is in full swing and is looking for some more volunteers. Last year, we had 60 fabulous male role models help out in our school. Our goal this year is to have 100 Watch Dogs involved during the instructional day with our Tigers! Contact William Herrera if interested or with any questions at: [email protected]

Tiger Bucks Store Dates:

Oct. 4th & Oct. 5th: K and 1st grade Oct. 11th: 2nd grade Oct. 12th: 3rd grade Nov. 1st and Nov. 2nd: K and 1st grade Nov. 7th: 2nd grade Nov. 10th: 3rd grade

One thing that sets Vienna Elementary apart from other schools is our fantastic group of volunteers. On any given day you might see volunteers helping in the teacher work room, Watch D.O.G.S reading to a class, parents bringing in food to feed the staff, and a group of the PTA meeting to plan a school event. . . our volunteers play a huge role in our school and it takes a village! We want YOU to help make Vienna a special place by finding a way to be involved! Here's how to volunteer: Each year it is necessary to re-register as a volunteer at wsfcsvolunteers.com It’s quick and easy! Once you've completed that registration, you'll be able to receive invitations from our Signup.com site allowing you to volunteer for various activities. (The room parents in each class also organize classroom activities throughout the year, which they'll inform parents about through email or fliers.) You can also just come in on a Tuesday or Thursday morning any time from 8-11 to help out in the teacher workroom as a "bins" volunteer. Try helping in a few different areas to find out what you enjoy the most- your kids will LOVE seeing you helping around the school and our entire school will benefit from your help! Cool fact: Last year we logged the 3rd most volunteer hours of all the schools in the whole county! Volunteer Contact: Amanda Whalen [email protected] Bins Contact: Laura Blythe [email protected]

!

On behalf of the 2016-2017 Vienna Elementary PTA, Welcome! A wonderful year at Vienna has just begun and we are so glad you are here!

The PTA is comprised of parents, teachers and administrators working together to make a difference at Vienna everyday. We are unified and energized by our collective commitment to the growth and education of each and every one of our Vienna Tigers and we know that by working together, everyone benefits: our kids, our teachers, our school and our entire community.

You are a critical part of your child’s success. We hope that every family will take an active part in the education of their children - and at Vienna there are many ways to get involved. Last year our PTA and our volunteers logged over 15,000 hours tutoring, volunteering in the classroom, re-shelving books in the library, and helping out in countless other ways.

Get involved. Here’s how… • Join the PTA (it doesn’t require any time commitment, just your support!) • Volunteer – as little as 30 minutes a month makes a difference! • Join us in the workroom (bins) – any Tuesday or Thursday morning to help with

classroom projects. If you can cut, staple and count, you are qualified! • Donate to our Direct Donation campaign. Give now and give some later, just give

what you can, when you can. Every dollar makes a difference for our kids, our teachers, and our school!

• Dads, Uncles, Grandfathers, special men get involved with the Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) Program!

• Join the Vienna PTA Facebook page! • Get the latest news… check your child’s Take-Home-Tuesday folder every week, listen

to your weekly phone calls, and watch your email! • Be sure to check the PTA link on the Vienna school website for information! • Mark Your Calendar and Be there - a bright orange monthly calendar has all the

details and dates (find it in your Take -Home- Tuesday folder at the beginning of each month)!

We hope you’ll join us in experiencing all the great things Vienna and the PTA have to offer.
