It is that time of the year when we bunker down, primarily due to the cold weather and focus on wrapping up the final threads of the recent financial year, and commence cracking on all the exciting developments for the forthcoming year. This August we added to the layer of activity by conducting our annual Board Planning Day as well. Let me kick off this months column with a brief outline of the findings from this Planning Day. Strategic Planning Day Sets an Exciting Pathway for the Next 5 Years & Beyond The Strategic Planning day is an opportunity for the Board and the Executive to gather their collective minds and put aside some quality time to reflect and consider how we might be able to conduct our business better so that we can improve the services that we provide to our residents. As a not-for-profit organisation and one with a charitable focus it is a constant challenge to balance the organisations vision and mission with the ever increasing demands that the competitive aged care sector places upon us. SwanCare Group, like all not-for profit entities, needs to ensure it maintains a viable business to enable it to reinvest funds back into the organisation to guarantee its continued survival. This is a very important part of the organisation’s annual cycle and it is vitally important that the future planning is well thought out and structured. This year’s planning day was held on the 16th of August, and was a very full day with lots of information to consider, and lots of exciting and challenging developments ahead on the horizon. The Plan sets the parameters for the direction of the organisation over the next five years and beyond. The Strategic Plan sets out our Vision and Mission and explains our priorities, strategies and intended achievements that we will aspire to bring to fruition. It is developed with a clear understanding of the importance we place on sustainability and being valued for our leadership and excellence in the provision of Aged Care and Accommodation services. We still need to undertake some fine tuning to finalise the explicit details of the plan but it is agreed that our priorities over the next five years will continue to focus on the three specific pillars of success, namely sustainability, services and people. Within each of these primary key result areas, we will be focussing on the following key strategic outcomes:- 1. Making sure that we have sufficient money and cash reserves set aside so that we will be able to manage our future capital developments with a nicely balanced mix of internal and external financing. 2. Making sure that our buildings and physical assets will be suitable to meet the needs of contemporary residential aged care, independent living standards and will support flexible care needs delivered into a home environment. 3. Making sure that the range of services to our residents meet the needs of a discerning and changing ageing population base. 4. Making sure that we are well positioned to maximise the benefits of the reforms and changing aged care market that we will be facing in the future. 5. Making sure that our workforce is appropriately skilled, equipped and empowered to meet the changing requirements and increased demands that will emerge. 6. Making sure that our residents enjoy a strong sense of wellbeing, fulfilment and enrichment to their lives. We will continue to adhere to and maintain our reputation for responding to our clients’ needs, for working with and maintaining an authentic engagement with all our stakeholders and above all else, to ensure that the creation of our communities will foster well-being and a better life for all of our residents. At my next VRAC residents meeting I will have great pleasure in outlining to you some of the more specific objectives and outcomes that we will be aiming to deliver to you over the next 5 years. Needless to say, this is a very exciting time for the Aged Care industry and SwanCare Group with its integrated business model, flexibility and adaptability is very well positioned to thrive, grow and prosper during this changing environment, which, in a nutshell, translates to continued benefit, satisfaction and quality life experiences for all of our residents. Let’s now take a look at some of the other events and activities that featured since the last Tidings, Movie Matinee Thank you to everyone who attended the Village Movie Matinee – “Quartet” on Friday 26th July. Although there were some ‘technical issues’, we persevered, crossed our fingers and managed to view the entire movie, albeit with a couple of intermissions. Feedback from the event has been very positive and I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their patience, encouragement and the support shown, especially to Wendy from Way Out West Productions, who felt dreadful about the interruptions.

CEO’s Report (continued)

A thank you letter has been forwarded to the coordinator at Penhros College who has kindly advised that Bentley Park residents will be invited to attend again next year. Special thanks goes to Laurie Hudson for driving the bus, and for getting everyone safely there and back.

Alzheimer’s Memory VanApologies for the late notice in cancelling the visit by the Alzheimer’s Memory Van. For the record “no, they didn’t forget!”, unfortunately the Alzheimer’s staff member that runs the program was unwell. We will reschedule, possibly in October so keep an eye on the noticeboards.

Bowling Clubs Wrap Up Their Respective YearsSince the last Tidings I had the great pleasure of attending two special events, the first was the AGM of the Undercroft Bowls, the second being the Swan Village Bowling Club’s end of year luncheon. Both of these clubs are to be acknowledged for their great contribution to the social fabric of our Bentley Park community. These two clubs have been in operation for many years now, and have both become a very important part of the attractiveness of the village at Bentley. I would like to congratulate both clubs on a very successful year, and pay special thanks to the respective hard-working and dedicated committees that underpin the success of these two groups. And finally for this month, I would like to wrap up with a plug for the next

CEO’s Coffee Club OutingThe next outing is planned for Friday the 20th September, from 10am to 12pm.

The destination, at this stage is still a mystery, but I am sure it will be to our liking. The numbers for these events are restricted to about 12 people, so please get in quick to avoid disappointment. If you would like to register please contact Karen at administration on 6250 0010. These are very enjoyable events, they provide a great opportunity to meet with some fellow residents, and also gets the CEO to dip into his pocket and shout you a cup of coffee and cake. That’s all for this month, see you around the village. Graham Francis – CEO.

Notes from Australind RiseThe residents of Australind Rise held “Curry Night” on the evening of monday 12th August for Edna and Harry Ritchie. It was for a send off for the couple who are off to America via New Zealand. After spending a few days in San Francisco they board a cruise liner and travel to New York via the Panama Canal. Edna and Harry will be away for approximately six weeks. “Coffee Club” co-ordinaters Rhonda and Brian Zanich are heading off to Broome shortly for two weeks in the sun. The vegetable garden is proving so popular amongst residents it is now being expanded to vacant land above the current garden. Rodney, Brian and Kerry have been busy carting new soil and laying out new beds ready for the spring plantings.

SWAN VILLAGE BOWLING CLUB Our visit to the Greenhills Hotel for Christmas in July was a non-event, we arrived there at twelve noon to find everything closed up, no-one in attendance, but all was not lost, as we went back to York, and most people enjoyed

a meal at one of the Hotels. Hazel rang the hotel the next day and asked what had happened, and was told they were expecting us the following week, a costly mistake on their part as Hazel does not make those type of errors. The Annual lunch at the High Road Hotel was a great success, about 60 members attended; the food and service were excellent. Graham our Patron gave a short speech, and presented Roger Hayes with the Trophy for the most improved player. Natalie Hodi was thanked for the assistance she gave us when we replaced our Bowling Surface. Our next outing is to The Café on the Dam at Serpentine, I will report on this in the next issue of tidings, looking at the list I see it is fully booked, our members certainly do enjoy these outings, thanks to Hazel and myself for arranging them. Please make a note on your calendars for the AGM on September 12th starting at 9am nomination forms for committee are now on the notice board. It would be nice to see new faces on the committee with new ideas, nomination forms must be handed to Barry ASAP. As this maybe my last report I would like to thank the committee for all the support they have given me, and the club, especially Barry our secretary, Lloyd our treasurer, and Tom for his help and advice. Enjoy your Bowling Tony Ryder, President

Alzheimer’s Request

By Owen Parnell

Do not ask me to remember,

Don’t try to make me understand.

Let me rest and know you’re with me,

Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

I’m confused beyond your concept,

I’m sad and sick and lost.

All I know is that I need you,

To be with me at all cost.

Do not lose your patience with me,

Do not scold or curse or cry.

I can’t help the way I’m acting,

I can’t be different though I try.

Just remember that I need you,

That the best of me is gone.

Please don’t fail to stand beside me,

Love me ‘til my life is gone.

Residents Advisory Council - Carolyn Wellstead

If lack of complaints to the VRAC is any indication, we seem to be going through a period of being “content with our lot”, helped no doubt by the obvious activity of the painters and reticulation workers on site. Only downside of late has been the intrusion of unwelcome outsiders in the village – please do take your personal security very seriously. A reminder that our Coffee Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 9.30am in the Auditorium, followed by

morning tea. Do come along to share in the information dispersed by our guest speakers and the social interaction among residents. If you have any queries, please do contact one of the council members listed below and we will do our best to provide an answer. Bentley Park Social Club

Stratton Luncheon/ConcertPeter & Shirley continue to organise and host a Luncheon Concert at the Stratton Centre throughout 2013, on the first Friday of each month from February to December, 11:30am – 2:30pm. We have 4 Luncheon Concerts to finish the year:-Friday 6th September – Bill Baine, Singer/Guitarists. (Still a few tickets left) Friday 4th October “Fancy That”, Singing Trio. Friday 1st November, Peter Williams, Singer/Guitarist, Comedy/Impressions. Friday 6th December, top vocalist Adam Penn – Christmas Special-Songs, carols, crackers and Christmas fare. These functions comprise of a Fish & Chip meal served at the table – wine & soft drinks with an hour concert by quality performers – afternoon tea or coffee with cakes. The all-inclusive cost is $10. To obtain a ticket ring Shirley on 9355 4767. Please be early as it books out very quickly. See you there!!

Our August Concert drew a large crowd of residents who thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon of song from Adam Penn and ballroom dancing from a young couple, Leah and Riley, who had come to our event as new Champions from a competition they attended in South Perth earlier that day.

The audience was greatly appreciative and lavishly applauded the entertainers, with Gloria partnering Adam in some instances, so he did not dance alone all afternoon! Well done, Gloria. Numerous raffle prizes were drawn during the afternoon, which made some people very happy indeed. Spring Afternoon Tea on September 8th is our next event. However, you do need a ticket to enter, as we are only able to cater for a limited number. The October event may be different from previous advertising we distributed but

the Committee will advise everyone in plenty of time. Now that Spring is upon us and the weather should be improving, maybe residents will also consider using the BBQ and adjoining area for neighbourly/family lunches, as this great facility seems quite lonely and unused at times, alto the Social Club uses it whenever possible! The Op. Shop is progressing well and there are now some new volunteers involved, therefore lightening the load on Beryl and her assistants. Summer clothing will be on the racks in the near future. Both the Paper Recyclers and the Can Recyclers recently took away a load from each venue, and the Committee says a very grateful thank you to all who assist in these endeavours. However, would all paper donors please ensure that there are no ‘glossies’ in the donated papers, and that the papers to be collected are not left in the rain, as they are no use and will not be taken away. I personally thank the volunteers who ensure the Social Club events occur and run efficiently, and to those who attend the scheduled events on a regular basis, as well as newcomers to the Village. Thank you all for your continued support, Shirley Barnes President, Bentley Park Social Club

SwanCare has a vigorous refurbishment program at Bentley Park. Check out these photos of a one-bedroom town house recently refurbished in preparation for the arrival of a new resident.

SwanCare makes sure its units are modern and comfortable, as well as up-to-date in amenity, before new residents are handed the keys to their new home. The resident is then free to add the finishing touches to the unit with furniture and effects.

ART GROUPWe had an excellent morning with Bob who demonstrated his painting techniques and his use of cool and warm colours to give his paintings such great appeal. He answered our questions and generously offered to give another demo. We will be taking up this offer on the near future. Remember that the village show is fast approaching. Please try to finish those paintings so that we have a good selection of art on display. Club mornings are Tuesday and Friday from 9-11 am in the art studio 2nd floor of the Administration Building. New members are always welcome. Sheila Barley, Secretary

POTTERY GROUP Our members are working hard at their ceramics and clay with the Bentley Park Show in mind. The pottery is open every Monday between 9am and 11am should you wish to join the club or pay us a visit. We are situated in Allen Crt. next door to Kingia. Ann Morris/Secretary

The Writing Group We are a group of like-minded residents interested in WRITING, READING or STORYTELLING. We now meet MONTHLY on the FIRST FRIDAY of the month, 9.00 am – 11.00 am, Committee Room, Admin 2nd Floor, (Note Change – previously started at 9.30am). It is possible you may have an interest in WRITING, (from maybe as little as 100 words, perhaps describing events or episodes in your life), or in READING, (possibly to discuss your favourite book/author/genre), or even in just verbally relating a personal memory. Every month we travel down someone’s Memory Lane where a million interesting ‘life-stories’ reside. Why not yours? No fees, no committees, no office-bearers, no pressure! Come and try us out, come for the friendly promise and, hopefully, you’ll stay for the rewards! Call 6250 0538, Brian Dale, for more details.

DARTS CLUBDarts are on Monday and Friday at 6.30pm.
