Tidings from From the Pastor: Midweek Lenten Services
We continue our Lenten journey during our midweek worship services on
Wednesdays at 6:15 pm. The theme is “Principles of Faith: Readings in 2
Corinthians.” Gary Gilthvedt, retired pastor and college religion teacher, is
the preacher. Holden Evening Prayer is our worship setting.
Following Wednesday worship you are invited to a Lenten conversation
during which time we will discuss the Scripture text for that evening’s service.
Because a discipline of Lent is reading Scripture, you are
encouraged to read a chapter of the New Testament for each of
the 40 days in Lent. Suggested chapters (all from the Apostle
Paul) are: 1 Corinthians (16 chapters), 2 Corinthians (13
chapters), Galatians (6 chapters), and 1 Thessalonians (5
chapters).
A soup supper will be served before worship from 5:15 to 6:00
pm. Various groups from the congregation will be responsible
for each supper.
A part of confirmation this year is that the students will be attending Lenten
services and taking worship notes. Parents are encouraged to attend along
with their son/daughter.
During Holy Week, we will not have Wednesday worship or a soup supper.
We will worship instead on Maundy Thursday (March 29) and Good Friday
(March 30).

Council Update
Dear Members of Zion,
Happy March! Hopefully spring
will soon be on the horizon. As we
move forward in the season of
Lent, we continue to reflect on all
the wonderful things happening at
Zion, and the generous giving,
volunteerism, and dedication of
our members that make them all
possible.
Council met on February 15, 2018.
January was a month of abundant
giving! Zion received just over
$19,000 in general offerings; a
little more than $4,600 towards
dedicated accounts such as that for
Christian Education; and just over
$2,500 into the building fund.
Thank you to all for your
stewardship and persistent support
of Zion’s mission and programs!
For the month of January, Council
authorized Patrick Frolander
(Outgoing Funds Manager) to
catch up to our budgeted

We’re on pins and needles
waiting for quilting to begin! Marlene Lewis
It's quilting time again. We will
start quilting Monday, March 5, at
the Community Center. We
usually quilt from 9:00 until noon.
We have backs prepared, filling
sized, and tops sewn. We will be
putting the quilts together. You do
not need to bring any supplies. If
you can help out, please join us. If
you have a friend that might enjoy
this activity, feel free to invite
them along. Spread the word
among your groups. Hope to see
you there.
We are still accepting sheets,
blankets, mattress pads,
bedspreads, pillowcases, fabric,
thread, yarn, and darning needles.
We, also, can use upholstery/heavy
fabric for the backpacks for the
LWR school kits.
If you have questions, feel free to

Resurrection on the Rise! Shelley Galle
The Worship & Music Committee
is pleased to announce their next
project! Over the past years the
pew Bibles have been repaired
year after year. Many are now
beyond repair. We are currently
raising funds to purchase 100 new
Bibles for use by our congregation
during worship and for Bible
studies. We do ask that children
are not allowed to “play” with
these Bibles during worship to
maintain their strength and so the
binding does not break. If you or
your organization would like to
contribute to this project, please
contact one of the committee
members below. The cost is
approximately $9 per Bible. The
funds donated at the February 28
soup supper will be designated for
this project.
Elsewhere in this newsletter you
will find an order form for Easter
lilies. This year’s cost is $8.50 per
lily. You may also find order
forms on the Zion Ministries table
in the foyer. Order deadline is
March 16. These forms along with
payment can be placed in the
offering plate or in the church
office. If it is after office hours,
please slide it under the door.
We appreciate the volunteers who
commit to being worship assistants
throughout the year. If you wish to
serve in any capacity of worship
and learn a new ministry, please
feel free to contact one of our
board members below, and we will
be happy to assist you.

benevolence to the NW MN Synod
of the ELCA this fiscal year by
submitting $2000. Now we will
continue to give $500 monthly and
revisit the topic quarterly to
determine whether we as a
congregation are fiscally able to
increase this amount. Your
stewardship makes this important
tithe possible!
This winter, Zion received a
significant financial gift from Sam
and Peg Johnson’s estate to put
toward the payment of our building
loan. The entire amount was
applied to our loan in November
2017. The interest payments it
saves us from making on the loan
principal total over $25,000. We
are sincerely grateful for the
opportunity the Johnsons’ estate
has generously afforded.
In December, a proposed gift of
property from Trinity University in
Washington (state) was brought
before the Council. We took two
months to research the property
and discern its utility to our
congregation. The property is on
Gladys Avenue in an undeveloped
area of the city that lies just outside
of the new flood zone. After
gathering further information from
several sources, including City of
Warroad representatives, Council
decided to respectfully decline the
proposed property gift.

An important message from
the Memorial Committee:
Now that we are in our new
building the Memorial Committee
has a renewed enthusiasm! We
would like to remind everyone that
you can designate your gift in
memory of or in honor of a loved
one. Please designate your gifts to
the Zion Building Fund or the Zion
Memorial Fund. Δ

determine the amount of support
they receive from the Minnesota
Foodshare Food Fund.
To date, Minnesota FoodShare has
distributed over $17.2 million to
Minnesota food shelves. Cash
donations made to Minnesota
FoodShare or directly to your local
food shelf make the greatest
impact to food shelves, allowing
them to purchase according to their
communities’ needs and stretching
your $1 into more than $4 worth of
food shelf items.
Please bring nonperishable food
and monetary donations to Zion
during the month of March so we
can strive to #ENDHUNGER
together. Let’s do our part as
March is Minnesota
FoodShare month submitted by Dave Dalager
Nearly 300 food shelves
throughout Minnesota are
preparing for the annual Minnesota
FoodShare March Campaign. This
state-wide grassroots effort
restocks food shelves and helps
meet hunger needs in communities
in every county in Minnesota.
During the 2017 March Campaign,
Minnesota FoodShare and local
food shelves raised a combined $8
million and 4.7 million pounds of
food.
March has been identified by food
shelf and hunger relief workers as
a critical time of year. Donations
drop following the winter holidays
yet food insecurity and hunger
remain persistent. According to
Hunger Solutions Minnesota, over
3,000,000 visits were made to
Minnesota food shelves each year
from 2011 through 2016 and visits
in 2017 are likely to have met or
exceeded this number when fully
tabulated.
The Minnesota FoodShare March
Campaign encourages individuals,
businesses, community organiza-
tions, faith communities, and local
advocates to support their local
food shelf during the month of
March. Our congregation is joining
sponsors from across the state to
support this effort. Our
congregation will be supporting
the Warroad
Food Pantry by
donating loose
offerings on
Sundays and
Wednesdays in March, as well as
donating designated offerings
received during the month of
March. The amount of dollars and
food collected in March by each
individual food shelf is used to
God’s people to extend a loving,
helping hand to people who need
our help! Thank you for your
faithful support of the Warroad
Food Panty over the years.
Donations of food and funds may
be dropped off at Zion. To learn

FoodShare March Campaign, visit
