Memory loss doesn’t have to be inevitable as we age. While 40 percent of seniors will experience some type of memory decline, fortunately it’s something we can fight.

The Mayo Clinic has a list of eight things we can do to sharpen our brain.

1. Take care of any chronic conditions you have, and follow your doctor’s advice.

2. Stay mentally active. Read a portion of the news-paper you usually don’t see. Invest in a puzzle book. Volunteer in the community. (Offering to shelve books at the library can help with both mental and physi-cal fitness.) Learn to play a new musical instrument. Ask the senior center to invest in one of the memory improvement/brain fitness computer programs, and

8 Ways to Fight Memory Loss

use it often. (Studies have shown they work!) Dial the phone with your opposite hand. Learn new games or activities.

3. Stay physically active. Walking a total of 2 1/2 hours a week will help keep the blood flowing to the brain.

4. Get organized. Declutter your home. Make lists of things you need to do, and always keep the list in the same place. Keep your keys and other essentials in one location too.

5. Socialize. Look for opportunities to attend events

with friends. You’ll help to fight depression and stress at the same time.

6. Eat a healthy diet. Vegetables, whole grains, fruits and low-fat proteins -- as well as plenty of water -- can help your brain function at its peak.

7. Concentrate on what you’re doing. You’ll re-member information better if it’s the only thing you’re thinking about.

8. Get plenty of sleep, or at least enough naps. Even the brain needs to rest!

I’ve just read the worst case of double-speak I’ve ever seen. The new report on veteran suicides is a 59-page waste of time for those looking for helpful information.

The study, done by the Suicide Prevention Program of the mental-health services branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs, is titled Suicide Data Report 2012. Instead of laying out useful facts, it compares apples to oranges to bananas, with partial-this and half-that graphs covering different periods of time.

At this point, it’s received at least some veteran sui-cide data from only 34 states. “Negotiations” with the other states are continuing. Five states have requested a modification to the data request. Even the information it has, based on 21 states, is incomplete.

Here are some problems:--Information was collected by funeral homes and not

validated by the VA or Department of Defense.--Statistics from states with large veteran popula-

tions, such as Texas and California, weren’t used.--In some places information was used for the years

1999 to 2010. In other places it’s 1999 to 2003, or 2007 to 2010, or 2008 to 2012.

Here are a few gems from the Main Finding area below each graph:

--While the percentage of all suicides reported as “veteran” has decreased, the number of suicides has increased.

--Male veterans who die by suicide are older than non-veteran males.

--Veterans who died from suicide were more likely to be married, widowed or divorced.

--The majority of callers to the Veterans Crisis Line are male.

If you want to look at the report, do a Google search for “Suicide Data Report 2012” and click the link on www.va.gov.

So far the study has cost only $35,094.23 with $11,677.06 more expected in 2013. The costs are for state fees for processing and delivering the data.

Q: I have a Monta antique lawn mower patented in 1923 that was manufactured in Traverse City, Mich. I once had it appraised and was told it was worth around $500. I have enclosed a picture and would appreciate any advice you have. -- Richard, Sun City West, Ariz.

A: I looked at your picture, and I doubt your mower would sell for $500 in this sluggish economy. My advice is to show it to several antiques malls in your area.

• • •Q: I have enclosed photos of two art pieces: one in oil, the second in pen and ink.

The oil is signed “Davis” and the other piece by R.E. Kennedy. Although I haven’t been able to find anything out about Davis, but understand Kennedy is a prolific artist. I purchased both at a not-for-profit shop. Neither is dated. I have two ques-tions, how old are they, and what is each worth? -- Christine, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: I am not an art expert, and for a competent answer to your questions you need to hire the services of a certified appraiser in your city. Why? A free appraisal by a neighbor or so-called expert with no credentials is virtually worthless. If you really want to know about your art, spend the money and find out. If not, continue to enjoy them in your home.

I know what your next question is: You write a collectible column, so why can’t you give me an estimated value. The answer to that is simple. If I tell you, for example, that your Davis oil is worth $500 and you later discover it is really worth

much more, or for that matter, much less, you would not be happy with me.

• • •Q: I have a Charlie the Tuna plastic radio that I

received as a premium at my neighborhood grocery store in about 1972. I have always wondered if it has any value. -- Steve, Piggott, Ark.

A: According to Ted Hake, one of the foremost authorities of toys and related collectibles, your radio was manufactured in 1970 and is worth $40 to $90 with original base, and $15 to $40 without it.

• On March 1, 1692, in Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, three women are charged with the illegal practice of witchcraft after two young girls experienced fits and other mysterious maladies. During the next few months, area residents incriminated more than 150 women and men.

• On Feb. 27, 1864, the first Union inmates begin arriving at Andersonville prison in Georgia. Andersonville became synonymous with death as nearly a quarter of its inmates died in captivity. Confederate camp commander Henry Wirz was executed after the war for brutality and mistreatment under his command.

• On March 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signs the Jones-Shafroth Act, under which Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans were granted statutory citizenship. As citizens, Puerto Ricans could now join the U.S. Army, but few chose to do so. After Wilson signed a compulsory military service act two months later, however, 20,000 Puerto Ricans were drafted to serve during World War I.

• On Feb. 26, 1928, R&B legend Antoine "Fats" Domino is born in New Orleans. His most memorable hit was "Blueberry Hill" in 1956. After Hurricane Katrina, he was reported missing from his home in the Lower Ninth Ward, but luckily had been rescued early in the storm.

• On March 3, 1952, in a 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court upholds a New York state statute (the Feinberg Law) that prohibits communists from teaching in public schools. The law remained in force until another Supreme Court decision in 1967 declared most of its provisions unconstitutional.

• If you have small scratches in your wood furniture, try this old trick: Rub a walnut over dings to cover them up. Or find a matching brown crayon, rub it lightly into the scratch, and finish with a hair dryer held 10 inches away for about 10-15 seconds. It melts the wax of the crayon, and then you can buff it with a soft rag. Any excess is swept away, and the color remains.

There are 5 filing statuses:• Single • Married filing jointly • Married filing separately • Qualifying widow(er) • Head of household

SingleYour filing status is single if, on the

last day of the year, both of these apply:

• You’re unmarried or legally separated from your spouse under a divorce or separate maintenance decree.

• You don’t qualify to file as head of household or qualifying widow(er).

You might also be single if you were widowed before Jan. 1, 2012, and didn’t remarry during 2012. However, you might be able to lower your tax if you qualify to file as either:

• Head of household • Qualifying widow(er) with a

dependent childMarried Filing Jointly

You’re considered married if, on the last day of the year, both of these apply:

• You’re legally married. • You’re not legally separated under a

divorce or separate maintenance decree.A married couple can file a joint return

or separate returns. If your spouse dies during the year,

both you and your spouse are considered married for that tax year. If you don’t remarry during the year, you can file a joint return or separate returns.

If you do remarry in the same year your spouse died, you must do both of these:

• File a joint return or separate returns with your new spouse.

• File a married filing separately return for your deceased spouse.Married Filing Separately

A married couple can choose to file a joint return or separate returns. However, a joint return often results in a lower federal tax.

If you file separate returns, the tax rates are usually higher. Plus, several deductions and credits you might receive if you file a joint return are:

• Reduced

Filing Status • Limited • Not allowed

Qualifying Widow(er)You can file as qualifying widow(er) if

all of these apply:• You qualified to file a joint return for

the year your spouse died. It doesn’t matter if you actually filed a joint return.

• Your spouse died in either of the 2 tax years immediately before the current tax year and you haven’t remarried. So, for 2012, your spouse must have died in either 2010 or 2011.

• You claim 1 of these relatives as an exemption on your return:

• Son • Daughter • Stepson • StepdaughterThis doesn’t include a foster child.• You paid more than half the cost of

maintaining your home for the year. This must have been the home of your child or stepchild for the entire year.Head of Household

You can file as head of household if all of these apply:

• You were unmarried or considered

unmarried on the last day of the tax year.

• You paid more than half the cost of maintaining your home for the year.

• A qualifying person lived with you in the home for more than half the year -- except for temporary absences. However, if the qualifying person is your dependent parent, he or she doesn’t have to live with you.

Married but Considered Unmarried for Tax Purposes

To be considered unmarried for tax purposes, all of these must apply:

• You file a separate return from your spouse.

• You provided more than half the cost of maintaining your home for the entire year.

• Your home was the main home for more than half the year for 1 of these people:

• Son or stepson • Daughter or stepdaughter • Foster child• You can claim an exemption

for the child. However, this doesn’t apply if you can’t claim the exemption because the noncustodial parent is claiming the child.

• Your spouse didn’t live in the home during the last 6 months of the year.

If you paid more than half the cost of maintaining the home where you and your child lived all year, you’re considered unmarried for tax purposes. So, you’re entitled to file as head of household. By filing as head of household, you might be able to claim credits and deductions not available to married filing separately filers. These include:

• Earned Income Credit (EIC) • Child and dependent care

credit • Education credits • Student-loan interest

deduction

Lighting The WayBy Craig W. ArmstrongMany of us take our vehicles for granted. We jump

into them, start them up and take off. But, do you ever stop to think how hard it would be to go anywhere at night without headlights? Sure, most streets are lit, but it would be very difficult to drive at night without illu-mination. There are many types of headlights available, and while you get your vehicle ready for spring, you may want to consider your options.

The incandescent headlight is the most common used by America car manufacturers. The light comes from

the filament. As an electrical current runs through the filament, it glows and gives off light.

Another popular type of headlight is halogen. Halogen is a newer technology. It shares the use of a filament with the incandescent light, but its differences make it better. First, it uses a thinner filament. This allows the light to produce brighter white light than its incandescent cousin. Second, it is filled with halogen gas. The gas allows the filament to burn longer and thus extends the life of the headlight.

The next evolutions in “gassy” bulbs are xenon head-lights. Like halogen, xenon headlights use gas to achieve a whiter light. Unlike halogen, xenon headlights don’t use filament. They use electrodes instead. These elec-

trodes are encased in a bulb filled with xenon gas. This technology also allows the bulb or headlight to burn much longer. As you can imagine, xenon headlights are more expensive.

Standard driving lights provide a visual range of about 1,000 feet. Pencil beam headlights can double that range. The bulbs are usually for off-road use, and in many states, they are not street legal. They burn so bright that they are considered a danger to other drivers.

Fog lights are another type of headlight. It’s all about the angle for fog lights. They are designed to be pointed downward to increase visibility during rain, snow or fog. Light is not reflected off the elements and back into the driver’s eyes.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please provide the pros and cons of using salt in the diet? Why is water retention considered so bad? I am an 81-year-old man with stents in five heart arteries and one in the left carotid artery. My blood pressure is controlled with one medicine. -- E.W.

ANSWER: What makes salt (sodium, sodium chloride) a danger to health is its tendency to raise blood pressure. We need only 500 mg of salt a day, yet we take in more than five times that amount. Salt’s contribution to the elevation of blood pressure is something that people can alter without resorting to medicines. Salt does contribute to fluid retention. That extra fluid finds its way into the circulation, and blood pressure rises. That’s the condensed version of the salt story. High blood pressure promotes heart at-tacks and strokes.

The booklet on high blood pressure explains why it is so im-portant to lower elevated pressure and how to go about doing that. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Dairy products are a problem for me. For breakfast, 1 percent milk is fine

and yogurt isn’t troublesome. Other dairy foods bother me. I am 61 and more intolerant of dairy foods now than when I was younger. Why? -- Anon.

ANSWER: Lactase is an enzyme found in the small intestine. It digests lactose, milk sugar. Infants of all animal species are born with a good supply of the lactase enzyme. They lose their supply of lactase at the time they are weaned from their mother’s milk. Most humans hold onto an adequate supply of lactase into adult life.

Some, however, have so little that they find dairy products impossible to digest. Dairy products bloat these people, give them stomach cramps and can bring on diarrhea. That’s lactase deficiency or lactose intolerance. Both terms denote the same problem. The lactase deficiency is an ethnic trait. Blacks, Asian-Americans and Native Americans have less lactase in adulthood than do whites. Age causes the lactase supply to dwindle. That’s the reason you have more trouble at age 61 than you did years ago.

Cheeses and yogurt are exceptions to the rule. Many lactase-deficient people tolerate them well.

You can overcome the lactase deficiency problem by avoiding dairy products, by taking the lactase enzyme in pill form before eating dairy products or by using dairy products that have been pretreated with the enzyme.
