Hello All,
We’re happy to say the Parkland’s Sydney Road Street Party stall was
a big success. We had loads of people through the stall enquiring
about our club. We usually see quite a few new members and visitors attending the meetings after such a big event. Please make all our
new comers feel welcome.
On the Street Party – a big thank you goes out to all members who
helped out on the day, especially to those of you who helped with the
set up/pack up. Our club runs so well because of our members are
willing to pitch in, whatever the occasion. Question – Do you regularly take photos with your phone? I know I
do. Check out our new section: ‘Let’s discuss’. This month’s topic
centres on the place of phone cameras in a photographer’s arsenal.
Read the article below, then add your ideas to our Flickr discussion
board.
Keep Snapping,
Paula

Let’s discuss: Mobile phone photography
At one of my first meetings, the judge surprised me by saying
that his main camera is his iPhone. Why? No, it didn’t have all the
sophisticated features of his SLR, but it was there with him
everywhere he went. You can’t take a photo with the camera you
left at home! Cameras in mobile phones are getting better all the
time. Do you use a mobile phone camera in your day-to-day
photography? Any tips on good apps for iPhone or Android users to do more with their phone photos?
I have an iPhone and love its capacity for video – I can film
little snippets of the kids with pretty decent quality. On the
photography front, I like Instagram very much
(http://instagr.am/). It’s a free app that allows you to easily add
effects and filters to your photos, and you can also share them
and view other people’s images. Tilt Shift Generator ($0.99,
http://artandmobile.com/tiltshift/) is another fun app that creates a ‘miniaturisation’ effect similar to several of the place-getting
entries in this month’s My Melbourne comp. Would love to hear of
other good apps or ways to experiment with phone photography!
[‘Let’s discuss’ is a new section in the newsletter this year. We’ll look at a different topic each month with some thoughts, some questions and some
links to more information. Then we’d love you to hop online at our club
forum on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/groups/parklandsphotoclub/) and
share your ideas and opinions on the subject with other members!]
Member of the Month- Leigh-Anne Redmond
I first picked up a camera when I started my own weekend catering business, 4 years ago, and needed photos of the food I created to show
potential clients. I became addicted straight away and read everything I
could get my hands on about taking better food shots. The downside to all of
this was the food I’d consume just so I could practice.
I joined Parklands back in May last year, after deciding that I needed to
take the next step with my photography. Books can only get you so far. One
of the things I like most about being a part of the club are the opportunities
to head out with fellow enthusiasts with my camera in hand. Hands-on is the only way I learn.
Probably 90% of the photos I take (and LOVE to take) are of food, and I
play around with them on my food blog: http://chitchatchomp.blogspot.com. Trying to capture candid people shots is something I’m exploring at the
moment, with the emphasis on the word trying. I’m not as excited about
taking structured portraits as such, but just everyday happenings –
capturing a moment/memory. I’m amazed at how hard something that sounds so simple actually is! Improving my ability to take great people shots
has definitely crept up towards the top of my wish list since joining
Parklands.
As I’m only a newbie in the world of photography, I’m not aware of the many amazing and creative people that are out there. However, I have
fallen in love with the work of a Sydney-based food photographer, Katie
Davies, who has recently been picked up by delicious magazine (yes, if you
haven’t guessed already, I’m food obsessed!). I’ve been following her work for years on her own website (http://whatkatieate.blogspot.com.au) and it's
so lovely to see that others feel the same way as me. I can only dream to
one day take photos like she can.

Photographer of the Month – Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier was an American street photographer whose work
was unknown until being discovered (mostly as undeveloped film)
by a local historian in 2007. Her images are primarily of people
and city scenes in Chicago that she made while working as a
nanny in the 1950s and 1960s, although she also travelled to a
number of other places in the US and around the world.
