As I am writing this, there is so much going through my mind. This past month has been full of news....from the exciting to the utterly devastating. It is hard to mention some events in the same breath (or paragraph.)

The Kentucky Derby named it’s 139th winner as Orb’s name was written in the history books. Steve Heuertz captured the excitement again this year and we have included some of his great photos along with coverage of this historic event in this issue.

On a more somber note, Oklahoma suffered a major disaster as tornadoes tore through the state leaving a path of destruction and loss. There are so many emotions that I personally have felt (as I am sure most of you reading this have as well) while watching the coverage on TV and on-line. Some of the images and stories of total loss are heart wrenching. They will be rebuilding and recovering for a good while, let’s not forget about them. For those of you that would like to donate to those effected by this disaster, there are several charities that are out there that provide different needs. Please be sure to donate to a reputable charity or organization and don’t fall victim to a scam. (You can verify the legitimacy of a charity via the Better Business Bureau, Charity Watch and/or GuideStar.)

Until next month....I’ll ask that you send up a prayer for those mentioned above .....and please remember to count your blessings on horseback!

CHAMPION COLD CASH 123 RETURNS VICTORIOUS TO REMINGTON PARK

OKLAHOMA CITY - Cold Cash 123, American Quarter Horse Rac-ing’s World Champion in 2011 and the Horse of the Meeting at Rem-ington Park in 2012, made a triumphant return here Sunday. The mil-lionaire overcame a slow start to win the Grade 2, $101,340 Bank of America Oklahoma Challenge Championship.

Owned and bred by T. Bill Stables, Inc. of Clare, Mich. and trained by Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath, Cold Cash 123 was ridden by Roy Baldillez. The 5-year-old left the gate in slow order as he is prone to less-than-perfect beginnings. However, he usually has the time and the talent to overcome most of his starts and he did today as well, rolling to the front of the 440-yard race at the halfway point. Resilient once to the lead, Cold Cash 123 held on to win by a neck over The Sunday Assas-sin. BF Farm Boy was another head back in third.

Cold Cash 123 crossed the finish in :21.523 seconds over a fast track as the heavy wagering favorite at 4-5 odds. He paid $3.80 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.40 to show. The Sunday Assassin returned $7.60 to place and $4 to show. BF Farm Boy paid $5.40 to show.

The win was the 13th from 22 career starts for Cold Cash 123, a 5-year-old Michigan-bred by Oak Tree Special from the Takin On The Cash mare Hot Cash 123. He won his third career race at Remington Park, adding to his triumphs in the 2012 Leo Stakes and Remington Park Championship, both Grade 1 events.

Cold Cash 123 picked up $46,620 for his win in the Oklahoma Chal-lenge Championship, upping his lifetime money to $1,326,216. His next start is expected to be a defense of his win in the Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Championship on June 1.

STRAY CAT WINS THREE-WAY PHOTO FOR DISTANCE WINMaking his Remington Park debut Sunday, Stray Cat battled to win by a nose in the Grade 3, $45,270 Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge. The 4-year-old horse prevailed when the photo-finish image proved his nose-bob at the line had him there first over Emperor Vale-rian and DM Streakin Thru Fire in a great ending to the 870-yard race.

Owned by the Bonsall, Calif. partnership of Vessels Stallion Farm and entertainer Lyle Lovett, Stray Cat moved inside of his finishing rivals with 200 yards remaining to put himself in position. Emperor Valerian had the advantage up to that point, then dug down to battle back. Run-

ning in the middle of the stretch was DM Streakin Thru Fire with a rally. The trio finished just centimeters apart in the margins. Stray Cat crossed the line in :46.124 seconds.

Trained by Raymond Vargas and ridden by Cody Jensen, Stray Cat was 7-1 in the betting and paid $16.60 to win, $7.20 to place and $4.40 to show. Emperor Valerian returned $8 to place and $4.80 to show. DM Streakin Thru Fire paid $3 to show as the beaten 8-5 wagering favorite.

De Passem Okey, a two-time American Quarter Horse Association Champion Distance Runner was fourth. It was the first race in his 11 career starts around the Remington Park turn where he did not finish in the top-three positions.

Stray Cat is a horse by Storm Cat (tb) from the First Down Dash mare Your First Moon. Bred in California by his owners, Stray Cat won his second career race and his first at the 870-yard distance. The winner’s check of $21,280 moves his total earnings to $42,398.

DISTAFF CHALLENGE TO SHEZ JESS TOXICThe $40,860 Merial Remington Park Distaff Challenge was won in an-other close photo-finish by Shez Jess Toxic who exchanged the lead with Southside Of Heaven for the better part of the 400-yard race before winning by a nose in :20.115 seconds.

Owned, trained and bred in California by Dean Frey of Stanton, Calif., Shez Jess Toxic was ridden by G.R. Carter. The 4-year-old mare won her Remington Park debut and her fifth race overall from 12 attempts. She has only finished out of the money twice in her career.

Shez Jess Toxic was 7-2 in the wagering and paid $9.60 to win, $5.20 to place and $6.40 to show. Southside Of Heaven paid $25 to place and $15.40 to show. Shanachee was a half-length behind the top pair for third and paid $13.80 to show.

Cruzin The Wagon was the even-money betting favorite, finishing seventh.

Shez Jess Toxic is by Take Off Jess from the Victory Dash mare Dash-ing Fly Lady. The first-place check of $18,799 pushes her overall mon-ey to $158,634.

ZOETIS STARTER ALLOWANCE CHALLENGEThose that compete normally in the claiming ranks of racing had their challenge race Sunday as well in the $34,650 Zoetis Remington Park Starter Allowance Challenge. Knockout The Fire won the race by a length, covering 350-yards in :17.494.

Owned by Wade Helton of Pampa, Texas and trained by Alfredo Go-mez, Knockout The Fire was ridden by Omar Reyes. Bred in Texas by James & Marilyn Helzer, Knockout The Fire is by Walk Thru Fire from the Feature Mr Jess mare Feature Knockout. She earned $15,941 for the starter allowance score to roll her overall money to $28,776.

The Challenge winners from Remington Park are now qualified for the Bank of America Challenge Championships to be held at Los Alamitos in southern California in November.

TEXAS ROYAL SNOW SETS NEW TRACK RECORD, WINS 25TH CAREER RACE

OKLAHOMA CITY – At age nine, the Appaloosa gelding Texas Royal Snow is showing no signs of slowing. In fact, he might be getting faster. Thursday night in a $10,000-level Claiming race for Paints & Appa-loosas, the veteran powered to victory and a new track record for the breeds at 330 yards.

Owned by Jimmy Maddux of Weatherford and trained by Mollie De-vereaux, Texas Royal Snow started well under Agustin Silva and made the lead with just over 100 yards left in the race. Finishing strong, Texas Royal Snow hit the finish in :16.746 seconds over a fast track, setting a new Remington Park standard at 330 yards for Paints & Appaloosas. The old mark of :16.751 was set by Ooh Shez Special in May 2010.

The 8-5 wagering favorite, Texas Royal Snow paid $5.20 to win, $3.80 to place and $3 to show. KJ Cash was a half-length back in second to pay $14.60 to place and $6.20 to show. First Kool Chick paid $5.40 to show, running third.

The win was the 25th from 57 career starts for Texas Royal Snow and his eighth career win at Remington Park. Bred in Oklahoma by Mad-dux, Texas Royal Snow is a son of This Snow Is Royal (qh) from the Moon Lark (qh) mare Texas Union. The winner’s check of $6,680 boosts his career money to $256,392.

Jockey Berkley Packer won three races on the Thursday night program at Remington Park. He visited the winner’s circle with Brookstone Moon ($50.80 to win) in race three, Kaylees Krazy Paint ($27.80) in race seven and Sissys Tres Girl ($56.60) in the 10th.

Dan Steers Announced as the First Competitor of Road to the Horse

International 2014

As the World Championship of Colt Starting returns to the Kentucky Horse Park for the second consecutive year to accommodate sell-out crowds, Australian clinician Dan Steers from Double Dan Horseman-ship was announced as the very first competitor of Road to the Horse 2014. Dan Steers is no stranger to Road to the Horse, the talented Aus-tralian horseman served as Pen Wrangler at Road to the Horse 2013 to Double Dan partner Dan James.Steers captivated audiences at Road to the Horse 2013 with his light hearted humor and was affectionately known as ‘#1 Pen Wrangler’, a title that was monogrammed on the back of his deck chair that sat out-side the round pen while he assisted Dan James. Steers not only brings his comical Australian personality to Road to the Horse 2014, he brings a lifelong passion for horses.

“When I got the call from Road to the Horse Owner and Producer Too-tie Bland I was in the warm up pen, aboard my Stock Horse, Double Image at the Australian Stock Horse National Show in Tamworth, New South Wales. At the time, that was always the biggest event in my show season,” said Steers. “I quickly realized I had bigger dreams that lay ahead in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. I couldn’t be happier.”

Growing up in Western Australia, Steers discovered his love for hors-es in his teenage years when he began working for master farrier and horseman Pete Weber and later Australian cutting horse trainer Corry Holden. Steers’ talents were soon rewarded with success in the show ring and he began conducting regular horsemanship clinics. In 2009 Steers and James relocated to New South Wales and Double Dan Horsemanship was formed.

Since expanding to the United States in 2011, Double Dan Horseman-ship has experienced enormous success. Dan James won the World Championship Colt Starting title in 2012 at Road to the Horse, where he represented Team Australia with fellow countryman Guy McLean. Both Steers and James continue to conduct horsemanship clinics in Australia and around the United States.

After careful selection, eight talented clinicians across the nation, were invited to take part in the first ever Road to the Horse Wild Card competition. These eight clinicians trav-elled to Road to the Horse 2013 where they selected a gelding from the AQHA Remuda from the 6666 Ranch. Alabama Cowgirl Katie Hulsey Has Sights Set on

IFR44 & Rookie Title By: Tammie HiattWhen Katie Hulsey purchased her IPRA card, her goal was to win the rookie of the year

title and qualify for the International Finals Ro-deo. So far, so good. The 20-year-old Haleyville, AL cowgirl is currently doing both. Katie leads the rookie race and holds the number four slot in the world standings.

Barrel racing comes easy for Hulsey, “Since I was big enough to do it by my-self, I have been running barrels. My parents, Joe and Karen, both run bar-

rels and it has always been part of my life. My older brother, B.J. ran barrels too, but he didn’t stick with the horses like I have.”

“I’m excited about this year in the IPRA,” said Katie. “I’m trying to just take things week by week and see how it goes. I plan to stay pretty close to home; I doubt that I go to any of the Canadian rodeos this year. If I win money, then I enter for the next weekend.”

“Last year I had my SPRA card and went to five rodeos and won enough to make their finals. I asked my Mom if I could buy my IPRA card if I had a good finals. I went into the finals in 10th position and ended up sitting third. We just really started doing great,” said Hulsey.

“I love my horse to death! Diamon is so special to me. His registered name is “Heza Streakin Diamon”. He’s a 12-year-old gelding out of a grandson of Streakin Six and a thoroughbred mare. He was bought for me as a colt but I didn’t start riding him until 2008. Dad trained him and hauled him to the NBHA’s, he was too much horse for me when I was younger.”

“I finally got to take him over and have been riding him for 5 years now. I tell my Dad that I always get his hand-me-downs,” Hulsey laughed. “Diamon loves to run barrels, he tries hard every time. He loves a big pattern where he can really stretch out and run. He does fine in small pens, but tends to get ratey. He has a fun personality and is spoiled rot-ten. If you make him mad, he’ll let you know it.”

“The first year I was running him I went to the NBHA’s. He and I started our rodeo careers at the same time. The first one I entered was a first for both of us and we won it, I was hooked after that. He loves the rodeo crowds and excitement,” said Katie. “I definitely prefer running at rodeos over the barrel races.”“My family really likes the Streakin Six bloodlines. I have a full broth-er to Diamon that I am just starting to season at the rodeos. We have three broodmares that we raise colts with. We usually have between 12-15 colts that we are working with all the time. My Dad’s job keeps him from riding much at the house now, so I mainly ride the colts and get them ready and he hauls them for me. “

“In the past we have taken some of the colts to the futurities, but we’re not doing that now. It’s so expensive to do and with his job, we’ve just changed the way we are doing things. I like to take my time with the colts and go slow, I want them to last and have long barrel careers,” Katie states.

“I used to have some superstitions, like I would not wear a shirt again if I didn’t do good in it. Now, I’ve decided that it’s just not worth it, and just take what I get,” said Katie. “I guess I out grew that phase.”Katie has a realistic outlook on her future. “I am taking online college classes. That lets me have quite a bit of freedom to go to rodeos and keep up with my colts. I’m not sure on a major just yet,” said Katie. “My mom is an accountant and I work with her during tax season. I’m leaning toward accounting, but haven’t made a decision yet. What I do know is that I have to pay my way to the rodeos, so if I am not winning, I’m staying home!”

“I hope to be in Oklahoma City in January, that I know, said Hulsey.

Get Your Barn Ready ForThis Year’s Hay Storage

First cutting is right around the corner in most parts of the country . . . for most of us this means our barns will need to be ready to store our hay in the next few weeks. “There’s nothing worse than having a load of new hay and having no-where to stack it,” says Laurie Cerny, editor and publisher of www.good-horsekeeping.com. “Cleaning up your hay stack and storage area should be a constant process, but if it hasn’t been, it’s wise to do it now.”

Here are some tips for better hay storage:

Clean out the storage area. Remove all hay from previous years. If you have a cement floor – sweep the area out. Rake dirt floors and let the area dry/air out for a few days before stacking your new hay.Prepare the storage area. Always put a barrier between the ground and your hay. Wood skids work best to keep the bottom layer off of the ground while still allowing air circulation under the stack. Allow space in between stacks for air circulation and keep stacks at least six inches away from exterior walls (especially walls that heat up during the hot summer days).

Stack as you feed. Don’t block your hay in . . . .if your feed half first cutting and half second cutting daily make sure you can access both easily.

Separate different cuttings and different kinds of hay. It’s easy to tell first and second cuttings apart when they’re first baled and stacked.

When it starts to fade, however, it’s not so easy. Know where you stack each cutting; you can also tie a tag onto the baler twine indicating the cutting or field the hay came off of.

Keep a tally record. It’s easy to forget how much hay you’ve stacked in the barn as the season continues. Write your totals somewhere – either keep a notebook for your farm/stable, or mark it on a barn calendar or note board. This is the only way to know how much hay you have.

Spring Health Guide for Horse Owners

BOAH/INDIANAPOLIS(15 May 2013)—Warm weather has finally arrived, and the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) encour-ages horse owners to update their animals’ vaccinations now for the best protection against disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Vaccinations against Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or “sleeping sickness” and West Nile virus (WNv) are available to protect horses, mules and donkeys. However, both vaccines must initially be admin-istered in two doses 3-4 weeks apart, to become effective. Equids may not achieve disease-resistance until after vaccination because full pro-tection doesn’t develop until four to six weeks following the second dose. Annual booster shots are needed to maintain protection.

EEE causes swelling of the brain, staggering, convulsions and fever in horses. EEE can even be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that have fed on diseased birds; however, horses do not transmit the disease to humans.

WNV is a neurologic disease that was unheard of in the United States until 1999. Since then, WNV has spread throughout the country. Like other encephalitises, WNV causes swelling of the brain, which can cause staggering, incoordination, weakness of limbs, ataxia, partial pa-ralysis or death. WNV is transmitted by mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds, but is not known to be transmitted from man-to-horse or horse-to-man.

Dr. Sandra Norman, BOAH companion animal and equine veterinarian, suggests owners take additional prevention steps by reducing mosquito populations by draining standing water from birdbaths, troughs and other containers. Owners may want to stable their animals overnight to provide added protection. Insect repellents should be used judiciously, and always according to label directions.

Horse owners should also vaccinate now for equine influenza, tetanus and rabies. Many combination vaccinations are available. Horse own-ers should contact their local equine practitioner to schedule immuniza-tions and ask about options.Dr. Norman also suggests traveling horses have a recent equine infectious anemia (or Coggins) test, even though it is not required for horses moving within Indiana. Coggins is required in many other states and the time the test is considered current varies from state to state. When traveling, owners should have a certificate of veterinary inspection written within the previous 30 days and check with their destination’s office to receive up-to-date rules and regula-tions for entering.

If you have ever dealt with ulcers then you know to keep something in front of them at all times if they aren’t turned out in a good pasture. So, yes I think you have a good idea and are not over reacting.

ninaomWell thank you! I never see anyone else do-ing this but my horse likes to be busy! He loves his slow feeder and if it gets empty he throws it around lol. In fact he broke one so i got another for christmas. Weird i know! Anything to keep him happy.

palgalzMy dry lot horses have round bales of Pra-rie hay. They stand munching ear deep most of the time :) KylaKrisI have mine turned out on 4 acres of dry lot and only feed hay twice a day. They typi-cally eat for a bit then head out in the back of the lot to eat on the few weeds or lay in the sun and come back to nibble through

out the day. They usually have a little left over by the next feeding so I don’t worry about them not getting enough. Never had ulcer or colic problems (knock on wood). KKCOWGIRLI would also give them psyllium.

~BINGO~We keep ours on a 2 acre dry lot. It definite-ly isn’t ideal, but in saying that, we don’t have colic problems. Or atleast haven’t yet. We feed hay twice a day. But they get enough to keep them munching for a while. They usually leave scraps on the ground to come back to. And then mid day I feed them soaked beet pulp with safechoice perform. During the winter, we add salt to the mix to keep them drinking enough water.Again, not an ideal situation, but we make due with what we have. It sounds like you’re on the right track with the slow feeder.

RidenFlyI have to keep my three horses on a acre of dry lot. They are also stalled in 20 x20 stalls a lot of the time. Im in the desert so there is lots of sand..I put them in their stalls and I let the poop build up a bit and then it gets spread out and beaten down to form a bed... after that I keep it clean.. the bed of manure on the dry lotted stall is used as a barrier between the horse and sand. It’s really the best thing if you cannot keep feed out 24/7 because when they do graze and they do it all day,,,, they are picking up old dried manure/hay instead of sand. It’s not that bad in regards to flies once you get the bed down and then pick up the extra. We all do what we have to. I dang sure wish I had lots of open pastures but I don’t. Gotta do what we gotta do.

sassy&tessaI can tell you this. I lived in California my whole life except for the last two years. We had one bought of colic and at any given point in time could have between 10-15 different horses on the property. We prob-ably had 50 horses go through the property

I grew up on. We didn’t have grass. Period. We fed twice a day and our horses looked great and never had stomach troubles. Nev-er had weight problems either.I have had two run ins with colic or bad stomach aches since I moved to East Texas. One when they were on lots of grass and a huge pasture and another at my current place which is basically a dry lot but I have a round bale in front of them 24/7.I won’t lie, I miss the days of feeding twice a day and having them be ok. But I could do that because we had quality California hay. Way better than anything I have ever seen out here in East Texas but that is ex-pected for me. I wouldn’t contemplate twice a day feedings here.

starkfarmsI had to make the change from 20 acres of grass pasture where the horses where out 12hr day, 12 hr stalls. I moved to south TX and they are now on 4 acres of dirt(with a few weeds/trees scat-tered). I really panicked about the sand deal and fed them stuff for sand colic several months as they adapted to this area. I made them the slow feeder box so they would have hay all day. I think the hay keeps their gut moving so it helps from sand building up. GOOD quality hay is a biggie for horses in dry lot as they don’t get the nutrients from grass that they are accus-tomed to. Sometimes they seem bored when they are tired of eating and other times they are just walking around searching for something to nibble on.

IdahoI have two on dry lot, they have a tiny turn-out to munch some grass for about an hour a day. Only from end of May until end of October(if it does not snow early)Free choice grass/alfalfa mix and then their breakfast and dinner of alflafa pellets and grain. I have one that stays trim and one a little chunky. Just like people Only colic bout I ever had was at the train-ers during a very, very cold snap and she did not drink enough(-10 and below for 2 weeks no let up) The only colics I have

ever had were due to water intake and not to sand or feed patterns. If you are worried about sand(we do not have sandy soil) you could feed a sand supplement or just beet pulp shreds soaked. Edited to add: I tried the slow feeder on my mare that gulps her food, no go, it stressed her out so much, she just quit eating, after not eating anything but her breakfast and dinner for 3 days, I gave up, she hated the thing. But after a few days on free choice she backs off so that is the best for her.

NateracerI have two horses on about 2 acres that is what most consider a dry lot. It does have about an inch of grass and yard clover on it. They keep it mowed to about 1/2 or 1/4 of an inch. They get hay twice a day and grain morning and night. They get 3/4 of a small square in the summer and around a whole bale in the winter. Never had any problems.

hammer_timeWe have both pastures and large dirt pens. We’ve fed twice a day my entire life. Sure, we should probably have some slow feed-ers after reading some articles....but we never had one colic due to feeding 2x a day.

Dear Members, It is incredibly hard to believe that it is already this close to the end of the season. Only 2 months away. With this being said it is also incred-ible how many opportunities most of you have to still qualify for Na-tionals or even change the standings to become a Top Dog! Remember, you need only be a member to go to Nationals, but to have the oppor-tunity to qualify for the short go you must have at least 100 points. You can do this in just two shows if you place!

It seems like every year about this time all the directors begin talking and thinking about sponsorships, I know I am for Kentucky and Nation-als. This is only because we want the very best for our members, but we do need your help. With the economy the way it is, it is becoming harder and more time consuming for Directors to keep your awards at the levels you are accustomed to. Every little bit helps and they need it. Please don’t think of this as asking for hand outs because it is not. Our directors and our members are advertising for our sponsors. You can do a lot on that front as well. If you are the type to go out and ask for sponsors, then go out and buy the things you would buy anyway from our sponsors. Let them know you are supporting them because they support you. This is one of the best ways we can develop long lasting partnerships.

I hope that you will all join me in welcoming Arkansas as an active IBRA state. Please see the info under AR for further info!

I know that every month I am telling you thanks for being an IBRA member but I really can’t express my personal appreciation. I am very proud to be part of such a fine organization. We have a great set of di-rectors in place who are sincerely trying to do good for you and you are a great group of members. Because I want you to all feel comfortable communicating with the Home Office I will be doing my best to travel to each state this year. I will let you know through mass emails when and where I will be so that you may make it a point to flag me down with any questions or concerns that you may have. It is my goal to take at least one weekend a month to travel to a show outside of KY, so I hope to see you soon. This weekend (writing this 5/24) I’ll hit a Super Show in Jackson, OH at Henderson Arena to support MVP Show man-agement who has been a great supporter of the IBRA. June 14th-16th it is my intentions to head to C Bar C Arena for the Pursuit of the Loot supporting Brian Isham who is producing his first IBRA Super Show!

State NewsArkansasHello Everyone, I would like to personally welcome you to the IBRA! There are many exciting things going on in our association and we welcome you to be a part of it! Thank you to Beau McCoy for stepping up to the plate and getting the ball rolling in Arkansas.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the IBRA and what we are about please review our IBRA Rule Book which can be found on the IBRA website at www.ibra.us. You may also find a place to join our organization under membership!

The IBRA National Finals will be located in Cloverdale, IN this year and will run from Oct. 7th - 12th. You still have more that enough time to qualify for the finals. This year we will not be issuing Top Dog Status to Arkansas members simply because it is so late in the season that we will this would be unfair to the other states. We will however be welcoming Arkansas members to obtain their state qualifier status and earn their spot in the short go.

First and foremost we have the KY IBRA DOUBLE POINT FUNDRAISER SHOW on June 8th at Bluegrass Saddle Club in Shepherdsville, KY. BGSC will also have a show the night before which will be a great warm-up for the double point show. Proceeds from the Double Point show do go towards your awards so please support this show. We need members to message me on facebook or email [email protected] with an item you can donate to the concession stand. We will also have a silent auction table set up if you have any items to donate please bring them and let me know before hand what you will be bringing if possible. For every item you donate to the concession or silent auction table you will receive an entry for a drawing for a free membership. We really need everyone’s support here as we hope to be able to give away buckles to the Avg. Winners at this year’s KY State Finals in Liberty. This does depend on funds so please get those sponsorships turned in!

KY Member Brian Isham will be hosting his first every IBRA Super Show this month at C Bar C Expo center. This show has $20,000 in guaranteed money plus added money. This would be a great opportu-nity to have a warm up for the National Finals which will be hosted at C Bar C Expo.

Many other awards will be presented as well, such as Saddles, Buckles, Halters, Coolers, Groom-ing Totes & more.

Awards this year are sure to be unique and as preferred by many, useful, and also sporting the IBRA Logo.

Be sure to check the website there are several shows coming up in June that are Co approved with Kentucky and Georgia IBRA. Almost all of the candy and candle money has been turned. I am in the process of checking out awards. If you have any sugges-tions please let me know. I have started a TN IBRA facebook page. I am trying to update the page as often as possible. If you have a show please feel free to post it there also. Also check the website weekly for updated shows and show results.

I know I can’t say this enough but please go out and try to start get-ting sponsors for the TN State Finals which will be held at the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN on Aug. 16-17, 2013. Any amount or donation will gladly be appreciated and accepted. Remember if ac-cumulate $100 in sponsorship you are eligible to run in the Directors/Sponsors Race at the National Finals which will be held in Cloverdale, IN this year on Oct 7-12. . I just want to remind everyone that the TN Farmer’s Co-op is the Title Sponsor for the 2013 TN IBRA State Finals and Supershow. Please let the Co-op know much we appreciate them and their support.

Once again at the State Finals Friday and Saturday will count toward the 2013-2014 points. On Saturday points will also be for the 2012-2013. We will also hand out 10 Wildcards at the State Finals.

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Gr. 1) is an annual renewal occurring the first Saturday of each May and the pinnacle of Thoroughbred Racing in America. Every year, this timeless adapta-

tion generates an ensemble of characters and stories that captures the hearts and minds of an eager audience. The 139th edition of “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” was no different.

Amidst this year’s headliners were jockey Rosie Napravnik, who aboard Mylute would attempt to become the first female rider to win the roses. Joining Napravnik in the starting gate, Kevin Krigger aimed to be the first African-American winning jockey since 1902. A win for Krigger on the speedy Santa Anita Derby (Gr. 1) winner, Goldencents, would subsequently provide back-to-back victories for trainer Doug O’Neill who won the 2012 Derby with I’ll Have Another. Hall of Fame Jockey Gary Stevens hoped to

Returning to the irons after ending his seven year retirement earlier in the year, Stevens now sought his fourth Derby win while riding Oxbow for fellow Hall of Fame member and four-time winning trainer, D. Wayne Lukas. Todd Pletcher searched for his second Derby victory by stacking the odds in his favor and loading a remarkable five-pack of trainees into the starting gate including the undefeated and powerful Wood Me-morial (Gr. 1) winner, Verrazano, and the gutsy and game Loui-siana Derby (Gr. 2) winner, Revolutionary. Revolutionary would be guided by recent Hall of Fame inductee Calvin Borel, who searched for his fourth win in seven years.

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz The 139th KENTUCKY DERBYWhile the stories ran even deeper, one of the biggest developments of Derby week was the ominous weather forecast that predicted a steady rain throughout the day and greatly increased the chances the race would be contested over a sloppy track. As many of the con-tenders had little to no experience running on such a surface, the Der-by was likely to become both lit-erally and figuratively muddy as it was unclear how this would affect the pace and outcome of the race.

Despite the forecast, everything seemed to be in place until one last story developed. On the eve of the Derby, trainer Kelly Breen scratched Black Onyx (1) out of the race with a minor injury. Black Onyx would be healthy and safe but the defection left the Derby field with 19 entrants instead of the maximum 20. As a result, the stewards decided to leave post po-sition 1 vacant and allow the re-maining 19 entrants to start from their previously assigned positions.

Saturday, May 4th was met with an accurate forecast and Churchill Downs found itself soaked in rain. Although never becoming excessively hard, the steady rain proceeded throughout the day and the track became increasingly wet until it was officially listed as sloppy. Despite this, and almost as a gesture from the “Racing Gods” themselves, the only reprieve from the weather occurred for the eleventh race on the card. Although the track remained sloppy, the rain subsided and 19 horses were called to the post. As the first hoof stepped into the muddy mess, the 151,616 in attendance sang in unison and welcomed the magnificent 19 to the Kentucky Derby.

The moment had come. The gates would soon open and the Derby hopefuls would pass beneath the twin spires on their chase toward history. The stories leading up to the race would each play out in the course of two minutes until one would emerge above the rest and a single horse would write their finish adorned in a garland of roses.

The 19 horse field broke sharply from the gate with only Java’s War (19) slow to exit. Verrazano (14), Falling Sky (13) and Itsmyluckyday (12) started best of all and made a push for the lead. Golden-cents (8) quickly flashed his early speed and stuck a nose in front for a moment until giving way to Palace Malice (10) the first time under the wire. Joining the early leaders were Oxbow (2) near the rail and Vyjack (20) on the outside. Palace Malice was a surprise leader setting unexpectedly grueling fractions over the sloppy and challenging racetrack. He blazed the first 1/4 mile in 22.57 seconds and 1/2 mile in 45.33 seconds. race was developing as Golden Soul (4) ran in 15th, Orb (16) in 16th, Mylute (6) in 17th and Revolution-ary (3) in 18th. Heading into the far turn, Palace Malice continued the torrid pace through 3/4 miles in 1:09.80. Around the turn, Norman-dy Invasion (5) made a bold move and surged for the lead. On the rail, Oxbow poked his head in front for a moment, but Normandy Invasion quickly collared him and lead the field into the stretch. Meanwhile, in 17th position with 3/4 miles to go, Orb made a tremendous move six wide around the field and passed 11 horses in a mere 1/4 miles. Gob-bling up the slop, Orb surged for the lead. and Mylute closed on the outside. However Orb was too strong as he finished the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.89 and passed the wire 2 1/2 lengths in front of Golden Soul. Revolu-tionary finished 3rd, one length further back while Normandy Invasion was 4th, a head back and Mylute 5th, another head behind.

The pace indeed made the race as the fast fractions cooked the pacesetters and they each finished well back, while the top three finishers all came from off the pace and 15th place or further back. The only horse near the fast pace that stayed remotely close at the finish was Oxbow, who finished 6th, six lengths behind Mylute.

Once the trophy was presented, the garland removed and television interviews com-pleted, it became clear that Orb’s dance through the mud was no accident. Instead it was a choreographed plan, long in the making and a testament to and reminder of what racing once was, when horses were bred in the purest of forms, developed in private stables and raced in home silks. Despite the modern movement toward purchasing a racing stable via the auctions sales ring, first cousins Stuart Janney III and Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps continued their family traditions of enacting thoughtful planning to carefully craft strong bloodlines that could be repeated through multiple generations. When accompanied with patience, the formula worked and rewarded the families with horses such as the Janney’s legendary Ruffian and the Phipps’ tenacious Easy Goer and unbeaten Personal Ensign. Despite their longstanding success, the families never experienced victory in the Kentucky Derby. Instead, they were left with moments such as Easy Goer’s loss to Sunday Silence in the 1989 Derby and a famous coin flip in 1969

when the Phipps family lost the rights to an unborn foal of Somethin-groyal. Although Dinny’s father Ogden won the toss, he chose a filly out of Hasty Matelda, leaving Penney Chenery with that unborn foal...who would later become known as...Secretariat.

Despite this, much of the reason the Derby remained elusive for the Janney’s and Phipps’ was due to their belief that a horse should not be pushed to run in the Derby simply because they can. Instead, they chose to exemplify patience and prioritize the individual needs of each of their home-bred runners while operating under the assumption that the horse will show them when they are ready to contest the 1 1/4 miles midway through their three-year-old season.

Trainer Shug Mc-Gaughey mirrors these beliefs. In-ducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, McGaughey is one of the most accom-plished and well-respected trainers in racing. He too val-ues patience and care for his horses while waiting for them to tell him when and where they should run. While he has regularly dreamed of winning the Der-by and views it as the sports greatest achievement, like the Janney’s and Phipps’, McGaughey remained winless in the race after six pre-vious starters. His closest previous fin-ish was Easy Goer’s second in 1989.

However, on Febru-ary 24, 2010, Janney, Phipps and McGaughey would see their Derby luck begin to change when a bay colt by Malibu Moon out of the Un-bridled mare Lady Liberty was born in Kentucky. In homage to his sire, the Janney and Phipps homebred colt was named Orb. Although talented, Orb demonstrated immaturity and difficulties as a youngster. In his two-year-old maiden race at Saratoga, Orb broke from the gate

last of all when he instead jumped off all four feet and directly into the air. In a testament to his ability, he would rally to finish third in the race. Still, McGaughey had his work cut out for him.

Eventually this work started to pay off and the colt began to develop both physical and mental maturity. After two consecutive wins, Orb graduated to graded stakes competition early in his three-year-old sea-

In February, he won the Fountain of Youth (Gr. 2) at Gulfstream Park over the highly touted Violence and a few weeks later followed up his performance with a victory in the Florida Derby (Gr. 1) over pos-sible early Derby favorite, Itsmyluckyday. The win stretched his streak to four. Orb was now talking and McGaughey listened. For the first time since 2002, McGaughey had a horse that was telling him he was ready to run for the roses.

Orb arrived at Churchill Downs and continued to improve with every passing day. On April 29th, his final breeze before the Derby was a scorching four furlong move that stopped the clocks in 47 4/5 seconds. He drew post 16 in the gate and was installed as the 7-2 morning line favorite. Orb was ready and the public agreed. Despite the only ques-tion being how he might handle the sloppy racetrack, Orb was sent off as the 5-1 Derby favorite. That question was answered two minutes after the gates opened.

Orb’s Kentucky Derby was nothing short of spectacular. The ease at which he passed his opponents and skipped away to victory validated him as the best three-year-old horse in America. After the race, the typically reserved McGaughey said, “He was very settled in the race. Can’t wait for the Preakness.” Still, McGaughey was clearly emotional

and moved by his horse’s remarkable performance. Orb’s jockey, Joel Rosario, came into the race as the hottest rider in the country. In March he won the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup, aboard 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, and followed that perfor-mance in April by breaking the riding record at the prestigious Keenel-and spring meet. Now, he added the Derby to an impressively growing resume and said about the race and Orb, “It’s awesome. I won the $10 million Dubai World Cup and to win the Derby now it’s like a dream. I am so happy for Shug McGaughey. I feel awesome. I was so far be-hind, I just let him be calm and relaxed and he was available to do it.”

Available and very willing he was. Two minutes earlier, Orb and his connections were just another of the many stories crowding into the Derby starting gate. Now, that crowd had thinned and Orb stood alone, covered in mud and draped in roses. As is the case after every Derby, talk jumps to the hope and possibility that this, after 35 years, may be the one to capture that most elusive of crowns. Orb would move onto to the middle jewel of the Triple Crown and be a heavy and legitimate favorite in the Preakness Stakes. Regardless of the outcome in two weeks at Pimlico Race Course, Orb’s name will always be one of the 139 that are preceded with Kentucky Derby winner.

The Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana congratulates the following group of youth who have been selected to participate in the 2013 Youth Racing Experience. This once in a lifetime opportunity is a full day of hands on learning. They will experience a behind the scenes look at what it takes for a trainer to operate a barn, meet with racing officials, get an up close look of horses breaking full speed from a set of starting gates, and feel the thrill of helping a trainer prepare a horse to walk up to the paddock to run in a race. Who knows, they might even end up in the winners circle with the horse they helped groom!

The Youth Day Experience is June 22nd. Youth will be taking a mock trainers test and selected individuals who score high on the test and are recognized as outstanding individuals during the day will be eligible to win scholarships. The top individual of the day will be selected to represent Indiana for an all-expenses-paid trip to the Bank of America Challenge Championships at Los Alamitos Race Course in California to participate in the National program, where there will be $6,000 in scholarships awarded as well.

Mix Up Your Denim!Okay, I know I might be going to get a little

grief over this one but I’m going to address the subject; your riding jeans. There are so

many different options out there but it seems like a lot of people tend to flock towards your standard Miss Me Jeans, you know the ones I’m talking about – fit, flaired & tons of sparkle or bling on the back pock-ets. This is extremely popular at our barrel races. The trend has seen its better days & now it’s time to move on to other things. Don’t get me wrong, I like Miss Me but & I’m not saying throw them away but try some-thing new the next time you are at a barrel race.

Currently I love bold colors & prints. Wrangler’s Booty Up jeans come in a variety of solid & bright colors. I have a few pairs of them; they can go from saddle to street in minutes, which is an added bonus. With col-ors like red, pink, aqua, blue & purple there is some-thing for everyone & if you aren’t into the skinny jeans they do have boot cut options available.

On the 18th of May, the second leg of the Triple Crown was run. As most of you know, The Preakness is one sixteenth of a mile longer than the Kentucky Derby, which was run the first Saturday of the month, and on June 1st, The Belmont, more than a quarter mile longer than The Preakness, will be run.

Oh, the life of a great horse. We ask them repeatedly to be great over and over again. often with little concern for their aches and pains. We “know what they can do”, so we come to expect it.

Orb, who brilliantly won the Kentucky Derby, was asked by his own-ers and jockey to be brilliant once again later in The Preakness. As a still physically developing three-year old, this young stallion was being asked to run with little rest in the pursuit of a goal that has not been ac-complished since Affirmed did it in 1978. We now know Orb finished fourth and we will wait another year to see if a horse can accomplish the incredible feat of winning the Triple Crown. Whether a Kentucky Derby class horse, claiming race horse or a contesting horse, each time a horse runs and wins, he is expected to win the next time.

We have all felt the weight of expectations, reasonable and not, placed on us by other people. It seems the more we handle, the more is asked of us by others.

Competence is rewarded by greater responsibility.

I know they say, “God only gives you what you are able to handle.” But, and I tread lightly here (cause some of you feel uncomfortable with even the suggestion of humorously criticizing God), sometimes I think God overestimates my ability. I know he definitely has more confidence in me than I do. I’m not a great racehorse, but sometimes, I think my “Owner” thinks a lot more of me than I do.

Only thing I can do is keep racing and to give everything I have, just like the horses we love.

Last year you bought that special mare and bred her to that special stallion and after almost a year of waiting and

making sure the mare had every nutritional and environmental advantage available to her, the time for the foal’s birth is here. You made sure the mare got all her pre-foaling vaccinations four to six weeks before her due date and you have made all the correct decisions in this process so far. Now you have to decide whether or not to let the mare take care of the birthing process on her own or do you make sure someone is with her when she foals?

We all want our horses to perform at the best of their ability and we try to give them every opportunity to do just that. We breed the best mare we possibly can to the best stallion we can find and afford and hope that the resulting foal is better than either parent. Then we feed the new foal so that it gets all the nutritional advantages possible. We trim their feet once a month from the time they are a month old so that their legs can grow straight and strong.

We train them to handle well, load in a trailer and the list goes on and on. Finally the horse we raised or the horse we carefully picked out at a sale is ready to be put in training. We either do that ourselves or we do our research and find the best trainer we can and we map out a plan for our equine athlete’s career. He may be a racing quarter horse, a barrel horse or any type of horse that competes by using his athleticism. Whatever his job, we want him to have every edge to be able to do that job to the best of his ability.

Once he is in training an owner has many decisions to make that concern his equine athlete’s health. Those decisions need to be made very objectively since they are not only important to the health

and soundness of the horse, they are also important to the health and soundness of the owner’s individual business and they are important to the health and welfare of the racing, barrel racing and other using horse industries as a whole. These decisions include joint injections, supplements and a vast array of products that are advertised with claims to enhance the horse’s performance. All of the products and medications cost money. The person who is eventually responsible for paying for these products and medications is the owner. The owner is the “golden goose” of each industry. Without the owner, there is no need for the trainer, farrier, veterinarian or any of the products. Therefore all eyes need to be upon the owner. The horse’s health and well being should always be considered first and foremost but the owner should be next in line. There are probably a lot of horses treated by well meaning people but the reasons for the how’s and whys of treatment are not based on science and research. They are based on anything from tradition to the latest and greatest new thing advertised on face book.

It is a common practice in racing circles to inject several of a horse’s joints before each race. Many horse’s are injected before time trails and then again within two weeks when they are scheduled to race in the finals.

Joint injections should be given as the result of a diagnosis which is derived from the information gathered during a lameness examination. The lameness examination may include good quality x-rays and other diagnostic modalities such as ultrasound which reinforce the diagnosis and treatment of a lameness or unsoundness. They should not be given because it is the fashionable thing to do or because the winner of a big race had his hocks, stifles and feet injected and therefore it is surmised that is what every other horse should have done before they race also. It probably does not need to be done twice within a few weeks. Injecting a joint twice in two weeks between races is like changing the oil in your car after driving it a few hundred miles. If a joint needs to be injected every couple of weeks, then the horse really probably needs an extended rest period. Some owners are in the sport of horse racing, barrel racing or other competitive equine sport for a hobby or entertainment while others are in the sport as a business. Either way, the owner and trainer need to educate themselves about the pathophysiology of lameness. If everyone is educated about what they are doing, wise decisions will be made and the economy of the sport will remain intact. If owning a horse becomes a loosing proposition, the owners will not hang around for long unless there is some other factor offsetting the economic losses. Treatment choices should not be based on fear of loosing a competition or on tradition. Treatment choices should be based on scientific facts. Every owner and trainer does not need to learn and is not expected to learn the depth of knowledge that an equine veterinarian has regarding lameness. However if they don’t go to the trouble to learn the basics, they at least need to put their horses in the hands of someone who has. The old saying “a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing” is true but no knowledge is usually much worse. Our horses give their best when we compete with them and they deserve that the people in charge of them spend the time to truly learn about different disease processes and their treatments and preventions.

a joint then another decision comes to the forefront. What is the best product to inject the joint with? What product will result in the healthiest joint and what product is considering the long term soundness of the horse. Most joints that need to be injected have some form or grade of osteoarthritis. These joints keep themselves healthy by having their own joint capsules and synovial membranes produce hyaluronate. Hyaluronate is a natural lubricate in everyone’s body that is in all parts of the body that are lubricated. The joint is no different and produces it own hyaluronate when the joint is healthy. If the joint capsule or synovial membrane has been traumatized in some way and is inflamed, the joint ceases producing sufficient hyaluronate to effectively lubricate the joint. This is when a joint needs to be injected. There are several forms of hyaluronate to choose from when deciding to inject the joint. The best products have a high molecular weight. They are like using higher quality motor oil versus lower quality motor oil in your car. They last longer and protect the joint better than using a hyaluronate product that has a lower molecular weight. Many times a steroid is also injected into the joint. All steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect on the joint but in the long run some steroids have a deleterious effect on the joint cartilage. The steroids with the long term negative effects tend to have longer lasting anti-inflammatory

properties in the joint but there are better choices in steroids most of the time. Some steroids such as triamcimilone are actually “chondroprotective” and not only have an anti-inflammatory but they also protect the joint. Sometimes the choice of steroid may be dictated by the withdrawal periods established by the governing body of the sport. If that is the case, it is best to try to think ahead and if possible use the chondroprotective steroid enough days in advance of the race or event.

Joint injections are an important part of keeping our equine athletes sound and performing to the best of their ability. They are good when used correctly. There is actually nothing negative about injecting a joint when it is done for the right reasons. Routine is not a good reason and it is an expensive reason. A good diagnosis is a good reason and it is a cost effective reason. I have my own shoulder injected on a periodic basis. Part of the reason I have it injected is because it hurts if I don’t. The other reason I have it injected it to further protect the joint cartilage and keep it lubricated. But there was a diagnosis that caused my shoulder to be injected. It was not a matter of routine. The responsibility to treat our horses judiciously with injections and other medications lies with everyone involved including the owner, trainer and equine veterinarian. Many owners and trainers do not want a diagnosis. They tell the

veterinarian what to inject or how to treat. They also let it be known that if a particular veterinarian will not do as they say they will find one who will. This is where the gray zones exist and why everyone looses. The treatment

needs to be a well thought out plan that includes the horse, owner, trainer and the veterinarian with everyone being given respect for their individual knowledge. If everyone works together and uses science and experience to base their decisions on, the individual horse and the racing industry will be better off in the long run. A thorough physical exam with at least the veterinarian and trainer involved will tell everyone if a certain treatment needs to be given. If a thorough exam is not given to the horse, subtle problems can be missed and the results can be disastrous. If the horse needs to have diagnostic nerve blocks, x-rays or ultrasound to diagnose a problem then do them. If the diagnostics are done up front versus trying this and then that as a way to diagnose a problem, the horse and everyone involved with him will usually save a lot of time and money and the horse will be better served. If in all cases we do what is best for the individual horse, we will be doing what is best for the horse industry and everyone involved in the horse industry both in the short term and in years to come. We have been blessed to work in a great industry that revolves around what most of us would do for fun. Our industry owes it to the horse and to itself to think long term.

Does anyone else in your family ride horses? My dad had horses growing up, but never showed or rode seriously. My mom has always had a fear of horses after an accident as a child, but has tried her best to support me and has come a long way. Morgen used to be involved in hunter jumping and currently is a camp counselor that handles the horses and gives lessons. Sierra is starting to become more interested in riding and maybe barrel racing.

Do you have any other pets? I have 2 australian cattle dogs, Alli and Molly.

How did you get involved in horses? Who influenced your riding? I always regretted that I was not born into a horse family, but although it was a challenge to make my own way, it was also a blessing because I have been exposed to several different disciplines and styles that have made me the rider I am today. I started out at a hunter jumping farm and then began barrel racing when I got my first horse with Marie Simpson at A Bit Above Farm. She really took me under her wing and I began hauling every weekend with her and her daughter, Rebecca Simpson. Bob Hess would make visits to Marie’s farm during the summer to give clinics, so I had the opportunity to take lots of lessons from him as well. During this time I was also heavily involved in dressage and eventing with Keely Frank, who taught me to really ride with my body and have soft hands. In more recent years I have done work for Shar Berning and Rex Wiley, of Flyaway Farms. Shar and Rex taught me a lot about letting go of constant collection and teaching a horse to work more on its own, which was very

different for me since I came from a dressage background. I also learned several of their colt starting strategies that I still use on my colts.

Hi !!!! Well this has been a real set back for me. As some of you already know, I fell off of my colt at Circle G (landed on my feet!) I have been to the hospital, the back doctor and now physical therapy. I have not rode for almost three weeks and it’s really rough. They say I have stress fracture and my pelvic is out. I am enjoying physical therapy two times a week and as of right now Fort Smith is not looking too promising for me.

Words cannot express how thankful that I am to Joe, my mom, Casey and Jesse Wagner. They have exercised horses for me, done my mowing jobs and really stepped up to the plate to help make this easier. I know its not the end of the world and a lot of people have a lot worse things going on...but I can’t wait to ride!!!!

For now I’m finishing up finals this week at school. Hope to see everyone real soon...

The Frenchmans Feature gelding is for sale. Over the past years we have bought and sold several horses, and I consider myself fortunate to have owned each one. They have all had their challenges and have each taught me something new in overcoming those challenges.

What other hobbies do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Horses take up a very large part of my life, and between 6 horses and school I don’t have much spare time. However, I share my dad’s love of the outdoors and enjoy skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and scuba diving.

What are some of your accomplishments with the horses? When I got my first competitive barrel horse, I ran locally and we won a lot, however after a year or two she had several soundness issues and had to be retired.

Since then I have dealt with navicular and EPM, which has kept me at home most weekends. But more recently, with the Frenchman’s Feature gelding, I have been able to place at several larger shows and won the 2-D in youth at the NBHA state show this past summer. The others I have are still young.

Who do you consider your mentor? I don’t have just one mentor. There are several different ways to train a barrel horse and I believe you have to take something from each successful person in the industry. Creating your own style requires you to take methods that you like from each person and piece them together to create your style- what works best for you and your horses. I have learned a lot from and look up to riders such as Bob Hess, Sherry Cervi, Dena Kirkpatrick, Martha Josey, Molly Powell, and Charmayne James.

How long have you been riding? I began riding seriously at the age of 6, so for 13 years I have been riding consistantly.

What are your future plans? School? Work? I am studying Business Management at Purdue University and plan to get my MBA after completing my undergrad.As far as jobs go, I have a dog care business, Play! Doggie Care, in which I exercise, train, and rehabilitate u n m a n a g e a b l e

dogs or dogs whose owners simply don’t have time to fulfill their exercise needs. I also take in outside horses, starting colts, and buy and sell turnaround horses. On top of that I usually have another job. This year I am working as an assistant at an Insurance Company close to my house.

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

Where did Spring go already? It is the middle of May and we have frost warnings! Hope that means our summer will extend into October and November! Cowboy Mounted Shooting is going strong, gettting close to 13,000 members, there are several shooting match weekends scheduled for May, June and July just in

the tri-state area. The Midwest Region clubs are having shoots almost every weekend, surely there is one near you. www.cmsaevents.com 1st Ohio CMSA as their 4th clinic in 2013 scheduled for May 24th along with DWPQ’s on the 25th & 26th, results will bein for next month. Friday evening will be a DWPQ Warm up for the Championship weekend. The Campionship Main Match starts on Saturday, June15 with 4 stages followed with 2 stages on

Andrea’s dream of opening a Cafe’ is getting closer. Fortunately their horses are still here so theiy will be at some of the up coming shoots in the Midwest Region.We wish the Imler’s happiness, success and FUN in this new adventure. It all started when Princess Annabelle was a puppy. She liked to grab my neck and pull on the loose skin. She would hang on my neck for minutes at a time. That had to be when the stretching started.

It must be something about puppies....I can vaguely remember the people saying that I did the same thing to my mentor, the Doberman Pinscher named Sam, who lived here when I came.

Now it is Miss Maybelline grabbing my sagging jowl skin and stretching it even more. If I were a puppy, I’d think I still had a lot of growing to do with as much loose skin as I am getting around my neck.

I’ve heard the people here talking while watching those “makeover” television shows....something about cosmetic surgeries and face lifts to remove the extra skin.

I think I need that.

I wonder who I need to get in touch with to make it happen?

Maybe they could even do a makeover show about dogs like me having cosmetic surgery? I mean, they’ve made reality TV shows

about just about everything else under the sun haven’t they? (Note to self, get information on cosmetic surgery and reality TV shows.)

In the meantime, until I can figure out if the loose skin is worthy of removal, I guess I can let you in on what has been happening lately around here at the ranch.

As I already mentioned, Miss Maybelline has found my jowl skin....and loves it. Other than that, we have had several baby horses born this year and they are always a lot of fun.

The kids that live here like to give each one a barn name - even if the babies aren’t “full timers” here, they still get a name.

I like to listen to the conversations about why each baby foal should have this name or that.This year’s baby names started with historical

figures from the World War II era. (I don’t know much more than what I’ve overheard....dogs don’t study History.) Winston (as in Churchill) and Rosie (as in “Rosie the Riveter”) were the first two.

The next babies seemed to be named for simpler reasons, like the filly who started out with crooked legs - they are now straight (“Cricket” - sounds like crooked) and the colt who spent a lot of time scooting across the stall before standing (“Scooter.”) Then there was the littlest foal (“Pee Wee”) and the colt who was born while his mommy was cast in her stall and who then managed to get his legs scratched in the fence after two days (“Trouble.)

There were other cute names to match the babies, but my favorite foal name is still “Funny,” the foal from last year who seemed to always have his tongue sticking out when the camera snapped a picture.

Until next month, I’ll be researching “jowl lifts,” reality TV and World War II.

In March, our Junior High Division Cinch Team traveled to Greenville Kentucky for the Quad State Rodeo competing against KY, TN and MS. Our Indiana team placed second in the overall rodeo in which the rodeo team was awarded a monetary scholarship to any charitable contribution of their choice. Our amazing IN team chose to make the donation to the Chalee Gilliland Foundation to support Cystic Fibrosis.

Our Cinch Division has now completed its State Finals and will be traveling to Gallup, New Mexico June 22-29 for the Cinch Junior High Division National Finals.

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

When you hear High School Rodeo what pops into your mind? Is it cowboys riding enormous bulls? Or do you see cowgirls on their pretty horses running as fast as they can around three barrels? Think outside the box and think National Rifle Association (NRA) shooting?

Well not only does the National High School Rodeo Association of-fer rodeo events; they are partnered with the NRA which offers two events through the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) program; Small Bore rifle and Trap shooting with a shotgun. Small bore is where you shoot at a target from 50 yards away. There are three positions in small bore: prone, kneeling, and standing. When shooting prone your lay on your stomach, in kneeling you are only to rest your body on one foot and rest your arm on one knee, when standing and shooting the target you want your elbows tucked and be parallel with your shoulders. Standing is one of the most difficult positions because there is very little support and it is difficult not to shake and weave while trying to aim at the target.

Trap shooting is shooting single clay birds with shotguns from five stations in which each shooter rotates after five shots, allowing each contestant a round of 25 shots. A 10 or 12 gauge shotgun is used in the trap shooting.

The Indiana High School Rodeo had their first shoot of the season in Lebanon, Indiana on May 11. Luckily the weather held up and we were able to shoot all the rounds. These events provide the rodeo kids an op-portunity to show off their shooting skills and also another time when

our rodeo family can come together. The past couple of years we have been honored with our IHSRSA members placing within the top 50 and two years ago top 20 in both events. They are part of our lives. We can call them whatever we want, but just because we are going through a trial or a tough time does not mean that our “life” has been put on hold. It may feel like it, but we ARE still living and it is still our story being written.

What good would your favorite book or movie be if there wasn’t something thrown in there to test the characters? Without the tough times, the good times wouldn’t seem quite as good. The point I am trying to make is that the good times are not the only part of our “lives” that count.....sad times, tough times...they all make up each of our individual stories.

We shouldn’t expect life to be “perfect.” Even as Christians, we will have really tough times. The bible tells us that there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-81There is a time for everything,and a season for every activity under the heavens:2a time to be born and a time to die,a time to plant and a time to uproot,3a time to kill and a time to heal,a time to tear down and a time to build,4a time to weep and a time to laugh,a time to mourn and a time to dance,5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,6a time to search and a time to give up,a time to keep and a time to throw away,7a time to tear and a time to mend,a time to be silent and a time to speak,8a time to love and a time to hate,a time for war and a time for peace.

Such is life. Your life, my life, each of us has a story that we are unfolding as we live each day. Just like the books we read, there will be turmoil, tragedy and triumphs for each of us.

What I am trying to encourage you to do is to choose to embrace life.....embrace your individual story and “live!” The best part is that we can CHOOSE to LIVE, even when the “living” is not as easy as we would like.

We don’t know what is around the next corner, but as long as God is with us, we will make it though whatever this world throws at us.

In James 1, we are told to “consider it pure joy.... when you face trials of many kinds, because....testing of your faith produces perseverance.” This is one of my favorite scriptures:

you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. 9Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. 12Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. 13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot

be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

There is a lot to absorb in that passage. It gives us a lot to think about. What I want to be sure we take from it in this instance is that we have choices to make everyday. We can choose to live life or to just exist. Either way it is our story unfolding and we are “writing” it as we live it each day. When my story ends, I want to be sure it was worth the read, do you?

Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Statement from The Jockey Club“The Jockey Club has consistently stated that the overuse of medication endangers our equine and human athletes, threatens the integrity of our sport and erodes consumer confidence in our game.

“We appreciate Congress’ continued interest in helping to safeguard the sport of horse racing, in particular with the recent news accounts of the proposed ‘Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act.’ We have not yet seen the proposed bill, but upon its release we will review it and pro-vide our comments to its authors. We note from the news accounts the inclusion in the proposed bill of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), which has been widely praised for its anti-doping accom-plishments in a variety of other sports

“In the meantime, The Jockey Club is encouraged by the substantial progress being made in the area of medication reform, including the efforts of Mid-Atlantic regulators and the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association to more tightly control the use of therapeutic medications; the commitment by members of the industry, led by the Association of Racing Commissioners International, to develop new model rules with more stringent penalties for repeat violators; and the eight equine drug testing laboratories, representing 24 pari-mutuel racing jurisdictions, that are currently undergoing accreditation reviews. Uniform accredita-

tion will ensure more stringent and uniform standards for forensic drug testing.

Beulah Park: Deniro’s Sainttakes Tomboy Stakes

By John McDulinDeniro’s Saint, under jockey Rodrigo Vergara, prompted the pace to the outside of heavy favorite Blazing Bling to upper stretch and drew clear to win by two lengths in the $50,000 Tomboy Stakes at Beulah Park on Sunday.

A 3-year-old Ohio-bred filly trained by Joshua Faulkner, Deniro’s Saint drifted out a bit in the stretch but still was good enough to hold sway late.

Blazing Bling, under Deshawn Parker, set the pace but gave way late and finished second, 10 1/2 lengths in front of She’s the Prize in third.The running time for the one-mile Tomboy over a fast track was 1.41.37, and Deniro’s Saint returned $11.60 to win.

Craig Dado Elected to NTRA Board of Directors

Craig Dado, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, has been elected to the Board of Direc-tors of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), it was announced following the organization’s second quarter Board meeting held Friday, May 17, in Baltimore, Md. Dado, 48, has been with Del Mar since 2001 after having previously worked at Santa Anita Park.

In other action, the Board:Approved audited financial results for the fiscal year concluding Janu-ary 31, 2013, which reflected net revenues of $66,850. The complete NTRA financials and the company’s annual report will be released in early June;Ratified the NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance 2013 Code of Stan-dards;Received a report on federal legislative activities from The Alpine Group, the organization’s Washington, DC,-based lobbying team; andReceived updates on the National Handicapping Championship, NTRA Advantage group purchasing, sponsorship, and other programs.The next regularly scheduled meeting of the NTRA Board of Directors will beAugust 8, 2013
