Corrosion protection

The type of corrosion pro-tection selected forunstressed bars dependson the duration of use,the potential damage incase of failure of a groupof nails as well as on theprevailing environmentalconditions. Both tempora-ry and permanent systemsare available and VSLoffers the range of corro-sion protection options asspecified in the Norms,such as the Swiss code SIAV191/1. Generally the cor-rosion protection is speci-fied by the Engineer incharge of the project.

VSL Bars B 500 / S 670

VSL offers to the geotech-nical market the VSLThreadbar System forunstressed applicationssuch as soil nails, rock

bolts, micropiles andothers. The bars have acharacteristic quality ofB500 and S670. Barsystems for both tempora-ry and permanent applica-tions can be supplied. Thebars meet the require-ments of the relevantNorms and Standards.Both qualities are hot rol-led with a coarse threadover the entire length.

B 500 : Left-hand threadas well as right-hand up toØ 63.5mmS 670 : Right-hand up toØ 63.5mm.

The bars have a high duc-tility (class H according toEurocode 2).

Advantages

The robust coarse thread for both bartypes means the system is very user-friendly on site, components remainthreadable despite the usual site condi-tions and the bar can be easily cut orcoupled resulting from unforeseen chan-ges on site. The bar has a very goodbond behaviour.The characteristics of the S670 bar aresuch that the diameters of the installedthreadbar, when subjected to tensiononly, can be reduced by 1 unit and, thuseconomical solutions both in materialsand drilling can be achieved. For exam-ple, a Ø 32mm B500 bar has a workingload of 250 kN (according to the DINNorm); the same working load can beachieved with a Ø 28mm S670 bar. This isalso valid for combined stresses if corre-sponding checks are carried out.

Quality assurance

The production of both types of bars andsystem components is carried out accor-ding to ISO 9002. Tests carried out at theFederal Institute for Testing Materialsand Research in Dübendorf / Zurich

demonstrate the suitability ofboth types of bars.

Services of VSL

VSL are in a position to offer– beyond the supply ofmicropiles, soil nails and rockbolts – the following services:

● Pre-design and consultancyservices to Engineers andcontractors

● Installation, grouting andsupervision

● Rental or sale of equip-ment such as jacks, pumps,mixers and torque wren-ches

● Execution of anchor andmicropile tests

In addition to our unstressedVSL anchors, we also offerPost-tensioned anchors accor-ding to the Swiss Code SIA V191, including electrically iso-lated anchors for permanentuse. For these applications,we can supply adequate documentation. Anchors inaccordance with other codesand specifications can also besupplied. We can undertakeanchor load controls onanchors which have alreadybeen installed, even whenthe anchor head has no thre-ad and the protruding lengthof the strand is not sufficientfor normal retensioning; please contact us for furtherinformation.
