The VSL Strand SystemThe VSL Strand System is wellsuited for lifting or loweringsuspended loads and for the pullingor sliding of loads. The main compo-nents of the system are the motiveunit, the tensile member with theanchorage for the load, the pumpand its controls. The unique self-gripping concept of the motive unitanchorages provides a maximumlevel of inherent safety.

Motive UnitThe motive unit consists of ahydraulic centre hole jack and theupper and lower anchorages. Theupper anchorage is attached to thejack piston.During lifting the jack is extended, causing the individual strands of thetensile member to be gripped by theupper anchorage and thus to bemoved upwards. At the start of thepiston’s downward movement thestrands are immediately gripped bythe lower anchorage, while at thesame time the upper anchorageopens. The load is thus moved in astep-by-step process. For lowering operations, VSL motiveunits are equipped with an auxiliarydevice which automatically controlsthe opening and closing of theanchorages. Lifting and loweringoperations can therefore be carriedout with the same degree of safetyand speed.

Tensile MemberThe tensile member consists of7-wire prestressing steel strandswith a 15 mm nominal diameter. Thetensile member is anchored to theload by a specially designed endanchorage.

Hydraulic PumpsThe oil flow for the motive unitsis provided by electro-hydraulicpumps with either single or multipleoutlets. The characteristics of these pumpsguarantee synchronised jack move-ments, even if loads are different.Built-in pressure gauges or remotepressure control devices allowstresses to be monitored at all times. The size of pump can be chosento suit the load to be moved.Movement speeds vary accordingto the project and if required canbe in excess of 20 m / hour.

Control and Monitoring SystemsAll VSL motive units, jacks andsynchronised pumps can be operated either manually or byremote control. The lifting of hangar roofs or of otherhyperstatic systems usually requiresa precise coordination of liftingmovements. This is achieved byspecially designed, computer basedmulti-point monitoring systems, which centrally control and monitorthe operation up to the final, preciseheight. When loads from a number ofdifferent points are centrally moni-tored, custom designed equipmentdisplay the pressures digitally andgraphically, and provide print-outsof the results.

The VSL Rod SystemIn this system, the connectionbetween jack and load is providedby tubular rods equipped with cogs, which are moved and held by a pawlmechanism. These motive units cantherefore be used both for pullingand pushing loads. VSL rod motiveunits are available in two sizes, withcapacities of 300 and 800 kN.

Special Hydraulic EquipmentOur range of equipment alsoincludes a large number and varietyof hydraulic jacks with strokesof 30 to 800 mm and capacities of100 to 4,000 kN.VSL can also design and supplycustom-built hydraulic systems forspecial applications.
