The Scribe December 2017 Thoughts from Pastor Tim Orlowski CtK’S 5 th ANNUAL HOLIDAY HOOPLA IS DECEMBER 17, 2017!!! WAHOO!!! Wait…what? You don’t know what the Holiday Hoopla is?!?! It’s Christmas music! It’s holiday quizzes! It’s a gingerbread house building contest! It’s fellowship! It’s a movie! It’s friends, family, grandparents, and grandkids! It’s lunch! It’s candy! It’s a Hoopie Award! It’s fun! It’s… it’s just a great time, spent with great people, working together towards supporting a great cause. One of the components of Holiday Hoopla is a “gingerbread” (note: really, they are graham crackers) “house” (note: most creations are not houses, per se) building contest! Participants have one hour to create their work of art using the candy and building materials provided. Then, participants will have the opportunity to award Hoopie Points toward their favorites. The creation which receives the most Hoopie Points receives the much-coveted Hoopie Award! Finally, the creations will be on display dur- ing our Live Nativity on December 24 th , when congregation members can make a donation to take one home to decorate their house. This year, we are encouraging people to work together in teams, although individuals can still partici- pate. If you build as a team, you are eligible to receive extra Hoopie Points by assembling your team creatively. For example, you might assemble a team with the greatest age-range. Or you might as- semble a team with one person from each M-Team. Or you might assemble a team of all people with 20/60 vision. Or you might assemble a team that dresses up in matching or accompanying outfits for the event. Or you might assemble a team of professional scientists. Or you might assemble a team of… Who knows! But we’d love to have you come up with something wonderful. Happy Holiday Hoopla, everyone! I can’t wait to get this party started! Peace, Pastor Tim

The Scribe December 2017

Thoughts from Pastor Tim Orlowski

CtK’S 5th ANNUAL HOLIDAY HOOPLA IS DECEMBER 17, 2017!!! WAHOO!!!

Finally, the creations will be on display dur-ing our Live Nativity on December 24th, when congregation members can make a donation to take one home to decorate their house.

This year, we are encouraging people to work together in teams, although individuals can still partici-pate. If you build as a team, you are eligible to receive extra Hoopie Points by assembling your team creatively. For example, you might assemble a team with the greatest age-range. Or you might as-semble a team with one person from each M-Team. Or you might assemble a team of all people with 20/60 vision. Or you might assemble a team that dresses up in matching or accompanying outfits for the event. Or you might assemble a team of professional scientists. Or you might assemble a team of…

Who knows! But we’d love to have you come up with something wonderful.

Happy Holiday Hoopla, everyone! I can’t wait to get this party started! Peace, Pastor Tim

If you have been saving the BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION for the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM) at Rock Point, AZ, please bring them and put them in the collection jar in the Welcome Center by Christmas. We will continue to collect the Box Tops, though I would like to send what we have collected to date to the Mission before the end of the year. The Mission converts the Box Tops into money used for the Mission school. For the 2016-17 school year, the Box Tops brought in $4,477.70. NELM has re-ceived a total of $117,801.69 over the lifetime of participating in the the Box Tops for Education program. I think you will agree with me that’s quite an achievement!! Thank you for your contributions!!! Denise Dey

THANK YOU MARTIN LUTHER!!

Thank you to each of you for participating in the Luther Fest on October 29th. We celebrated Luther in a grand way and even got to do it with our Catholic friends. Thank you, Pastor Art , for sharing more about Luther and his accom-plishments as well as his personality traits. Vielen Dank, Pastor Tim, for the genuine Um Pah Pah music to transport us to Good Old Germany. Hopefully you had a wonderful time together. Laura, Carroll, and Pastor sure had a good time planning it. Laura, Thank you for getting the photographer lined up. We will treasure the picture. It took all of us from the brat tasters, to grillers, bread slicers, beer venders, beverage servers, sauerkraut cookers, dishwashers, beer glass sellers, youth who baked and served cakes, people that brought more goodies from salad to baked goods, everyone who brought a decoration to share, AND the super SET UP AND CLEAN UP CREWS. Whew! That is a lot of great work, and it really is appreciated. Ein Prosit to each of you!! HMMM. Let’s cook up another celebration.

Dear Christ the King Lutheran Church,

Thank you for your gift of $3,500.00 to Lutheran Disaster Response. With this gift you are providing emotional and spiritual care, supplying emergency relief, and addressing long term recovery.

Thank you for this gift and all your faithful generous gifts. Thank you for encouraging others to learn, act, pray and give with you. Thank you for living into God's words of justice and mercy and for joining with the whole church to love and serve one another.

Melinda Johnson - Peace Corps Update The torch has been handed off! Melinda’s replacement visited her in early

November. He met the host family, saw the lay of the land and went to

school with Melinda a few days. Melinda was able to impress him with what

can be cooked in one big pot on a propane burner! Luke is a recent college

graduate. Luke is ‘inheriting’ Melinda’s rondavel, and benefitting from the

many things she is leaving behind – solar panels/battery, cooking spices,

food, pots/dishes, bedding, etc. Melinda had to stock her rondavel from scratch, so this will be a

great advantage to Luke. We wish him well.

Both Melinda and Joel’s last day at their respective schools was November 17. Earlier that week

Melinda’s school had quite a sendoff party for her. They performed dances and songs, cooked lots

of food, and even members of the school board were in attendance. Melinda and Joel set foot on

American soil on November 23! In December they will be in Colorado. Please feel free to greet

them if you see them in church.

They feel truly blessed by the amazing experience they had serving in Lesotho. It will always hold

a special place in their hearts, as well as in ours. Thank you for your prayers these past twenty six

months. Melinda and Joel remained healthy and safe.

At the airport and ready to travel! The king of Lesotho was on their flight from Lesotho to Johan-

nesburg! A red carpet was rolled out on the tarmac for him to walk on to the plane.

Farewell to “The Mountain Kingdom”

You are invited to drop in and learn to quilt, share your own quilting expertise, or simply enjoy fellowship with them whenever you’d like. They often make quilts and donate them for baptisms, the sick and elderly, as well as for various mission projects for those in need here at home and abroad. GOOD READS. . .

Monthly Book Review by Lillian Boe

You can find this book in the Biography Section

of the CtK Library

“Life is so Good: One Man’s Extraordinary Journey through the 20th Century and

How He Learned to Read at Age 98” ~ George Dawson & Richard Glaubman

George Dawson was born into poverty in 1892, the grandson of slaves. He grew up in the deep south of America at a time when racial discrimination was common. He never went to school and started working s a young boy to support his family. He worked on farms and in a sawmill and helped to build the rail-roads and the Mississippi River levees. Despite hardships, George always believed in seeing the rich-ness of life and trained his children to do the same. What makes a happy person have a happy life? This remarkable book tells how George Dawson learns to read when he was 98 years old. He also offers valuable lessons in living and a first-hand view of America during the Twentieth Century. George died of a stroke at 103 years old, but not before he achieved his GED. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy that he passed on to his seven chil-dren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. And he survived four wives! He said he was a good husband, and he buried all his wives. If you read this book, you will be inspired by George’s charac-ter.

CtK BOOK CLUB

The CtK Book Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at 3:00 pm in the CtK Library. For the December 14th, 2017 and January 11th, 2018 meetings, the group will be discussing a book by Daniel Brown, “The Boys in the Boat.” You are invited to drop in at any time and join them for some lively and enriching literary discussions—new members are al-ways warmly welcomed!
