EXCERPT FROM THOUGHTS AND TITTLE TATTLE.

    Introduction

Much has been written about the city of Liverpool- from its humblebeginnings back in 1207: its involvement in the slave trade; thenumber one shipping destination in the world; to its people whoare passionate about their football. Documents of the citysrollercoaster ride are scattered round the four corners of the earth. The dark days of depression in the 1930s, the wonderful years ofprosperity, chaos of the Toxteth riots in 1985 caused by racialtension and cultural differences to the now peaceful times thathas united its people in hope.

The citys contributions in sports, entertainment, music, academics, manufacturing, politics and so much more arerecognised nationally as well as on the worlds stage. But whatgives the city its uniqueness is its peoples.Liverpool is a city of nations. Our memories are oceans apart andour backgrounds so different yet we all share the uniqueexperience of joy, pain, laughter and tears and above all hope andpride in what we have as Liverpudlians.

The people we meet every day; memories of places we visit withour friends, our first love and the banter thats what makes us whowe are.The collection of poems in this book will help you to explore theLiverpool experience through the lens of Ralph Killey, who overthe years has penned his thoughts and observations into poetry.

    Peters Poem

We sailed up the river and past Perch Rock,On, a cold, December morning

Billy, in the wheel-house, was stretching his arms and yawning. The cold, bright, silver light of dawn lit up The Marble Dome,

And the time on The Liver clock said, Peter welcome home.

Id been away, for four years,Shipping oil from, The Emirates

Before that Id been, bringing clothes, from China to The States.Wed, sailed home, the long way, via turkey, Greece and Rome.

But the time on the Liver clock said Peter welcome home.

I could see the skyline clearly now, my heart began to race.My brain kept on repeating, OH! How, I love this place.

Im home now and Im back to stay.Im finished with the sea.

And the time on The Liver Clock said: Peter stay with me

I disembarked it was cold and stark, but I need not travel far.

I needed grub and a pint or two in the Old King Eddy Bar.So I went at the pace of my favourite place.

I could smell the ale and polish. And when I got to the place I love, The Pub Had Been Demolished.

I needed a suit and some shirt to boot, so Lewiss sprung to mind.My ma would swear, the gear from there, was the best that you could find.

So I took a cab to Ranaleigh StreetTo, enter our well-known store.

My heart sank; I could have walked the plank. Lewiss, was no more.

Then when they said, Woolies, had fled, I truly was amazed. It all seemed strange, the pace of change, had me in a daze

My heaven on earth, my place of birthWhen my heart said no longer well roam.

Then a stranger said, All Right La and I knew that I was home.

    Up My Family Tree

I traced my family background, on the Internet one day,What I found there was a big surprise

There were Highwaymen and Hustlers,Gangsters, thieves and Rustlers,

And my godfather was one of Hitlers spies.

My great granddad, Louis, when he, came out of, gaol.Made, a fortune, selling whiskey from a Still.

His, half-sister Jane, made a packet On the game,And cousin Rufus hanged, on Highgate Hill.

Eventually I tried, to trace my Mothers side,I found her auntie Cissie was a stripper.

Her ancestor, called Georgia, was in love with Caesar Borgia. And my great grandma sold knives to Jack the Ripper.

With that cast of antecedents, I had all the main ingredients. To, become involved, in crime, or some adversity.

But my Dad did his researches, (he stole lead from roofs of churches)And he said hed send me off to University.

At Oxford they conceded it was politics I needed,Then I was introduced to all the scholars.

My fees were paid on time, my exams were doing fineAnd to my surprise I passed with flying colours

    Continue

From Oxford I came out, The P.M gave a shoutGet Him! Ive heard his speeches they are regal

I was instantly selected, then in Kent I was elected,

Now my criminal inclinations are all Legal

The Trolley SongYou gave me a smile at the freezer

I picked up a packet of peas. You search for your Access or Visa.

I went quite weak at the knees. You reached for your meatballs in gravy.

I, for my, Chicken SupremeYour perfume was driving me crazy. It seemed like a wonderful dream.

You selected your lavatory cleaner.I reached my bleached from above.

You told me your first name was Tina. And I knew we were fallen in love

We walked side by side with our trolleys. My feelings I could not disguise.

Your Lincolnshire, pre-packed potatoes,Had romantic tears in their eyes

When we had passed through the check-outI think it was bran flakes I carried.

It was then that I stuck my neck out.And said: Would you like to get marriedWith the sun, on your, Fair-trade Bananas

You looked like a Hollywood flash-backSo we rushed and bought matching pyjamas. And thanked The Almighty forCash Back

    The Magic Mini Skirt

The Sixties was Mini Skirt TimeLife was Sex with a Lagar and Lime

The girls looked fantasticJust knicker elastic

And beautiful girls in their prime

Nancy drove me to despair. With her halo of fiery, red hair

And Oh! What a treatWhen she sat on her seat

Lads would fight for the opposite chair.

The winters were foggy and grey. But our Work, was a joy, every day.

Just imagine the scene,In the Factory Canteen,

Next weeks Washing was there on display.

In those skirts all the girls looked real coolAnd when they bent down playing pool

All those flashing suspendersYoud switch off EastendersAnd everyone packed in Night School

On a coach trip to see, Blackpool Lights. It was then I saw those bloody tights

Then nylons were banished. The Mini Skirts vanished.

Its no wonder they brought in Gay Rights.

    My Secret

Im a filthy rich, freelance Spy.The man politicians despise.

I like shooting traitors,And Foreign Dictators,

    Then travelling home in disguise

As I travel the world selling drugs. Its wrong, but Ive lost all my ethics.

I sell hash and cocaine,In Beirut and Bahrain,

The fly to my Mansion in Essex

My friends work, for their meagre payTo buy tables and second-hand sideboards

I put shells in my MausersPack a clean pair of trousers

Then kill-off some Troublesome War Lords.

But, I live with one constant fear.A deep fear, I must never show.

    I dont bat an eye.As I strangle a spy

As long as, My Mumdoesnt know

    The Horizon

The late evening sky was, black as pitch.Suddenly, a cloud moved.

Stars appeared, one by one, like knot-holes in the floorboardsOf Heaven.

The sun sailed, like a majestic, golden, galleon, towards theHorizon.

Then, this huge glowing, ball of gases,And, molten metals, sank,

Without any trace of a hiss, into the surface of the,Ice cold, jade green, Irish Sea.

My beautiful, lady companion, turned,And said to me:

Well, are we goin fer a bevvy, or wha?
