ThorntonAcademyAthletics–AthleticDepartmentPhilosophy ThorntonAcademywantsallstudentstobehealthyindividualsso,inadditiontotheschool’swellnesscurriculum,Thorntonprovidesextensiveopportunitiesforstudentstoparticipateininterscholasticathletics.Studentsareencouragedtotakeadvantageoftheseopportunitiesduringhighschool. Theinterscholasticathleticsprogramhasthefollowingpurposes:

• Toencouragestudentsofallskilllevelstoparticipateinextracurricularathletics.

• Toprovidesufficientplayingopportunitiesforstudentstodevelopindividualplayingabilities.

• Toteachthefundamentalsandtechniqueofeachsport• Toencourageschoolandteamspirit.• Tofosterpride,sportsmanshipandethicalbehavior.• Tomaintainagoodrelationshipbetweenteams,theschoolandthe

Inordertobeeligibletoparticipateininterscholasticathleticsstudentsmusthavepassedtheequivalentoffourone-creditsubjectsduringthefirst,secondorthirdquarters.Inthefourthquarterstudentsmustpasstheequivalentoffourone-creditsubjectsandaccumulatefourcreditstowardsgraduationinordertoparticipateinathleticsthefollowingfallseason.

Astudent’seligibilitymayberestoredbypassingtheequivalentoffourone-

creditsubjectsthefollowingquarter.

AnexceptiontothispolicyoccursafterthefourthquarterwhenastudentmayregaineligibilitybyattendingsummerschoolorbytakingcorrespondencecoursesthatareapprovedbytheThorntonAcademyGuidanceDepartment.

Theintentofthiseligibilityruleistoensurethatparticipationin

interscholasticathleticsdoesnotinterferewithstudents’academics.

MainePrincipals’AssociationPoliciesforEligibilitytoCompeteinVarsityInterscholasticAthleticContestsAstudentshallbeeligibletoparticipateinanyinterscholasticsecondaryschoolathleticcontest:

A. Whomeetstheeligibilityrulesestablishedbythelocalschoolauthorities(above).

B. Whoisregularlyenrolledintheschoolwhichhe/sherepresents.a. Tobeconsideredregularlyenrolled,astudentmustbeinattendance

andacademicallyactiveintheschoolwhichhe/sherepresents.Anacademicallyactivestudentmustbepursuingaprogramofstudiesapprovedbytheprincipalandsuperintendentofschools.Exception:Attheendofthefirstsemester,astudent,whohasmetallschoolrequirementsforgraduationandwillnotreceive/acceptadiplomauntiltheschool’sMay/Junegraduationdate,maycompletethewintersportsseasoneventhoughhe/sheisnolongeraregularlyenrolledstudent.AllotherMPAandlocalpolicieswillbeadheredto.

b. HomeschooledstudentswillbeexemptfromtheenrollmentruleiftheirequivalentinstructionprogramhasbeenapprovedasoutlinedinMaineLaw.HomeschooledstudentsmustmeetallothereligibilityrulesinArticleII,Section2oftheMPABylaws.

c. Out-of-districtplacementstudentsshallbeexemptfromtheregularenrollmentprovisionsofArticleII,Section2(B)(1)andmayparticipateintheinterscholasticprogramoftheschoolinwhichtheyareplacedifthefollowingprovisionsaremet:(1)theschoolacceptingtheout-of-districtplacementstudentrequestsawaiverfromtheCommitteeonEligibility;(2)thewaiverrequestisaccompaniedbyawrittenconsentfromtheprincipalofthesendingschoolthatawaivershouldbegranted;and(2)theCommitteeonEligibilitydeterminesthatitisinthebestinterestsofthestudenttoparticipateintheinterscholasticprogramofthereceivingschool.Forpurposesofthisparagraph,“out-of-districtplacementstudents”shallbedefinedasstudentsplacedbythePETprocessinaprivatespecialpurposeschool,asdefinedbytheMaineDepartmentofEducationregulations.

C. Whocompetesunderhis/herownname,substantiatedbyabirthcertificate.Otherwise,astudentisineligiblefornineweeksfromthetimeitisdiscoveredafalsenamewasused.

D. MPABonaFideTeamRule:Amemberofaschoolteamisastudentathletewhoisregularlypresentforandparticipatesinteampracticesandcompetitions.Bonafidemembersofaschoolteamarepreventedfrommissingpracticeorcompetitiontocompeteorpracticeelsewhere.

Asinglewaiverperstudentathletepersportsseasonmaybegrantedbytheprincipalonacase-by-casebasisforextraordinarycircumstances.(e.g.Ifastudent/athleteisinvitedtoparticipateinaprestigiousweekendeventthen

awaivermaybegranted.Ifastudent/athleteisinvitedtoparticipateinanationallyrecognizedtournamentoveraschoolvacationthenthatwaivermaybegrantedforthatactivity.IfastudentrequeststomisspracticeeveryFridaybecausehe/sheisreceivingspecializedcoachingfromanoutsideteam/coach,thenawaivershouldnotbegrantedbecauseitviolatesthespiritandintentoftherule.)**Thispolicyisnotintendedtorestrictdualparticipationinschoolsthatallowdualparticipation.***Penaltyforviolationofthispolicy:1stViolation–ReportviolationtotheMPAoffice,suspensionfromplayforonegame/contest2ndViolation–ReportviolationtotheMPAoffice,removalfromteamforremainderofseason

E. Whoisundertwentyyearsofageatthetimeofparticipation.F. Whohasmaintainedundergraduatestatusinafour-yearcourseinaMaine

secondaryschooloritsequivalentasoutlinedintheMPAConstitution,ArticleII,Section3.

G. MPAEightSemesterRule:Whohasyettofulfilleightfullsemestersatanapprovedsecondaryschooloritsequivalent.

a. Astudentisonlyeligibletocompeteforthefirsteightconsecutivesemestersafterheorshefirstenrollsasafreshmaninafour-yearseniorhighschool,orintheninthgradeinajuniorhighschool.

b. Uponapplicationbyastudent’sprincipal,theCommitteeonEligibilityoftheMainePrincipals’Associationmaygrantnomorethaneighteenconsecutiveweeksofadditionaleligibilityuponasatisfactoryshowingthat:

i. Astudenthasfailedoneormoresemestersbecauseofabsenceduetoillness.

ii. Astudenthasbeenabsentoneormoresemestersbecauseofrequiredmilitaryservice.

iii. Astudentwithdrewfromschooltoassumefullfinancialresponsibilityforthesupportofthefamilybecauseofillnessorincapacityofaparent.

iv. Specialcircumstanceswarrantanexception.Suchcaseswillbereviewedonanindividualbasis.

EXPLANATION:Theeightsemesterrulereferstoeightconsecutivesemestersintime;itdoesnotnecessaryrefertoeightsemestersofattendanceorcompletion.Forexample,astudentwhoregistersasafreshmaninSeptember2015,iseligibletocompeteininterscholasticathleticsinsofarasthisruleisconcerneduntilthecloseoftheschoolyear

2018-2019.ThepupilisnoteligibletocompeteafterthatdateunlessthestudentisgrantedadditionaleligibilitybytheCommitteeonEligibility.

c. Ifastudentisgrantedanadditionalsemesterofeligibility,sucheligibilitymaybegivenforanyeighteenconsecutiveweeks,notnecessarilyconcurrentwithasemester,duringthestudent’sfifthyearofattendanceatthespecificrequestoftheschool.

d. MPAFourSeasonsofCompetitionRule:Nostudentwhohasbeenenrolledingrades9,10,11,12inclusive,inanyapprovedschool,shallparticipateinthesameathleticactivityformorethanfourseasonsexceptthatthisdoesnotapplytotheeligibilityruleaffectingsmallschoolswhoarepermittedtouseeighthgradestudentswhentherearenotmorethanfortyboysorgirlsingrades9-12.

e. Itistheresponsibilityofeachschool’sadministrationtoverifytheeligibilityofeachstudentatthebeginningofeachsemesterorequivalent.

H. Whohascompletedandpassedworkintheequivalentoffour(4)full-timesubjectswithcredittowardgraduationinthemostrecentlycompletedquarterorequivalent

a. Failuretoearnpassinggradesinfourfull-timesubjects(ortheequivalent)shallrenderastudentineligibleforaperiodoftimedeterminedbythelocalschool.

b. Therecordattheendofthemarkingperiodshallbefinalandscholasticdeficienciesmaynotberemovedforthepurposeofmeetingminimumeligibilityrequirementsexcept:

i. Forthosegrades/creditsinaregularaccreditedsummerschoolprogramacceptedbytheschooldistrict.

ii. Incompletegradeswhichmaybemadeupforcreditduringthefirstfive(5)weeksofthesubsequentquarter.

c. Itisunderstoodthathomeschooledstudentswillhavecompletedandpassedtheequivalentoffour(4)full-timesubjectswhichmeettherequirementsoftheapprovedhomeschoolprogramofinstructioninthemostrecentlycompletedquarter.

d. Itisunderstoodthataspecialeducationstudentwillnotbedeniedparticipationininterscholasticathleticssolelybecausethestudentinenrolledinareducedcourseloadwhenthereducedcourseloadisduetothestudent’sexceptionality,providedthestudentissatisfactorilycompletingtherequirementsoftheeducationalcomponentofanindividualeducationplanandisotherwisecompliantwiththeplan.Itisfurtherunderstoodthatthespecialeducationstudentnotsatisfactorilycompletingtheeducationalcomponentsofanindividualizedplanorisnototherwiseincompliancewiththeplanshallhavehis/hereligibilitystatusdeterminedinthesamemannerastheeligibilityofanon-specialeducationstudentwhoisnotsatisfyingtheapplicableacademicstandards.

I. Astudentwhoisotherwiseeligible,butwhowasnotenrolledinagivensecondaryschoolduringtheprecedingsemester,shallbeconsideredeligibleprovidedthepupil:

a. Carriedsuccessfullyduringtheprecedingsemesterofattendanceatanotherapprovedsecondaryschoolortheequivalent,theminimumscholasticrequirementforeligibilityofthereceivingschool.

b. Completedsuccessfullytheworkofanelementaryorjuniorhighschoolduringtheprecedingsemester.

J. Astudentwhofailstoqualify,comply,orconformwiththeeligibilityprovisions,orwhoviolatestheseeligibilityprovisionsshallbeineligibletocompeteinanyinterscholasticsecondaryschoolathleticcontest.

K. MPATransferRule:Astudenttransferringtoamemberschoolmaybeaddedtoavarsityeligibilityrosterifthestudentisenrolledandinfullattendancenolaterthantheopeningdatethatcountablegamesmaybeplayed,assumingthestudentmeetsallotherlocalandMPAeligibilityrules.Studentsnotmeetingthedeadlinecannotbeaddedtothevarsityeligibilityrosterduringtheremainderofthatsportsseason.ExceptionsmaybegrantedatthediscretionoftheExecutiveDirectorforlatearrivingforeignandforeignexchangestudents.

L. MPATransgenderPolicy:Astudentiseligibletocompeteonasinglesexteamonlyifheorsheisamemberofthatsex,eitherasreflectedonhisorherbirthcertificateorinthecaseofatransgenderstudent,asapprovedinaccordancewithArticleII,Section12,exceptthatafemaletomale(FTM)transgenderstudentwhohasbeenorbeingtreatedwithtestosteronerelatedtogendertransitionmaycompeteonlyasamale.Asinglesexteamisoneonwhichonlymembersofonegenderareallowedtocompete,eitherbecausetheschoolsponsorsbothboys’andgirls’teamsintheparticularsportorbecausethesporthasbeenlimitedtoparticipationbyonegenderinordertoprovideoverallequalathleticopportunity(e.g.girls’fieldhockey).Singlesexteamsdonotincludeteamsopentobothboysandgirlsbutwherenogirlshavetriedoutormadetheteam(e.g.football).

Priortopracticeorplayonanyteam,astudentandhis/herparent/guardianmustsignapermissionslipthat:1)givespermissiontoparticipateininterscholasticactivities;2)acknowledgesanunderstandingofThorntonAcademy’sinterscholasticathleticspolicyandtheMainePrincipals’Association’spupileligibilityrules.;3)acknowledgesthattherearerisksinvolvedinparticipatinginathletics.ThepermissionslipmustbereturnedtotheStudentActivitiesDirector.

Eachstudent’sprivatemedicalpolicyishis/herprimaryinsurance.Intheeventthatastudentdoesnothaveprimarycoverage,twenty-fourhourinsurance

coverageisavailableforafee.Applicationscanbeobtainedfromathleticadministrator.ThorntonAcademyisnotresponsibleformedicalexpenseswhicharenotreimbursedbyinsurance.

Parentsmustalsocompleteahealthhistoryinformationformonayearly

basis.Thisinformationisutilizedbytheschoolnurseandathleticsdepartmentstafftoassistthestudentinparticipatinginagivenactivitysafely.Thisinformationisfiledintheschoolclinic,andtheschoolnurseupdatescoaches,thecertifiedathletictrainer,andathleticadministratorasnecessarytohelpsupportthespecificmedicalneedsofagivenstudent-athlete.

ThorntonAcademyrequiresallstudentsinvolvedinitsathleticprogramsto

haveapre-participationphysicalexamination.Examinationsarevalidfortwoyearsfromthedatethattheyoccurred.Parentsmayusetheirprimaryhealthcareproviderforthispurpose.Inaddition,theschooloffersafreephysicalexaminationforinterestedstudentsandtheirfamilieseachspring.

******************AttendanceatPracticesandContests

Attendanceatallpracticesandgamesismandatoryunlessastudenthasbeenexcusedbythecoachorhis/herdoctor.Inordertopracticeorparticipateinagame,astudentmustattendschoolthedayofthepracticeorgame.Studentsareexpectedtobeinschoolontime.Iftardy,astudentmusthaveavalidexcuseandmustarrivebytheendofBlock2topracticeorparticipateinagame.

Anyformofsuspension,whetherinschooloroffcampus,makesastudent

ineligibletopracticeorplayduringhis/herentiresuspension. ******************AthleticTrainingServices/Injuries

Athletesandtheirparents/guardiansshouldbeawarethatpracticingorplayinganysportcanbedangerousandinvolvestheriskofinjury.Beforetryingout,practiceorparticipate,studentsmusthaveaphysicalexamandreturnasignedathleticspermissionslip.Becauseofthepotentialrisksassociatedwithparticipatingininterscholasticathletics,athletesmustrecognizetheimportanceofcarefullyfollowingcoaches’instructionsregardingplayingandtrainingtechniques.

Ifanathleteisinjuredandreceivesprofessionalcareforanathleticinjury,

he/shemusthavewrittenpermissionfromtheattendingphysicianinordertoresumeparticipationinthesport.PleasenotespecialconsiderationsandexceptionslistedforconcussionsandheadinjuriesasnotedinThorntonAcademypolicyandMainestatelaw.

ThorntonAcademyrecognizesthatconcussionsandotherheadinjuriesareseriousandcouldresultinsignificantbraindamageand/ordeathifnotrecognizedandmanagedproperly.TheAcademyadoptsthispolicytopromotethesafetyofstudentsparticipatinginschoolactivities,includingbutnotlimitedtoextracurricularathleticactivitiesandinterscholasticsports,andtoprovideacademicsupportforstudentsidentifiedwithconcussiveorotherheadinjuries.Training

Priortothebeginningofeachsportsseasonandeachacademicschoolyear,schoolpersonnel(includingvolunteers)identifiedbytheConcussionPolicyManagementTeam,mustbemadeawareofthisschoolpolicyandstandardsofcarerelatedtothemanagementofconcussiveinjuriesandparticipateinconcussionawarenesstrainingthatincludesrecognizingsignsandsymptomsthatmaysuggestaconcussiveorotherheadinjury.Coaches(includingvolunteers)arerequiredtosuccessfullycompletetheNFHSconcussionmanagementcourse(pertheMainePrincipalsAssociationguidelines).StudentsandParents/Guardians

Priortothebeginningofeachindividualstudent’ssportsseason(atleastannually),studentsintendingtoparticipateinschool-sponsoredathleticactivitiesandparents/guardiansofthesestudentswillbeprovidedinformationincluding:A.Theriskofconcussionandotherheadinjuriesandthedangersassociatedwithcontinuingtoparticipatewhenaconcussionorotherheadinjuryissuspected;B.Thesignsandsymptomsassociatedwithconcussionandotherheadinjuries;andC.Theschool’sprotocolsfor:1)Removalofthestudentfromtheactivitywhenthestudentissuspectedofhavingsustainedaconcussionorotherheadinjury,2)Evaluation,and3)Returntoparticipationinschoolactivitiesandacademics

Thestudentparticipatinginsportsandhis/herparent(s)/guardian(s)mustsignastatementacknowledgingthattheyreceivedandreadthisinformationbeforethestudentisallowedtoparticipateinanyschool-sponsoredathleticactivity.ManagementorConcussiveandOtherHeadInjuries

Itistheresponsibilityofstaffmembersinvolvedinschoolactivitiesandtrainedinthesignsandsymptomsrelatedtoconcussionand/orotherheadinjury,toactinaccordancewiththispolicywhenthestaffmemberrecognizesthatastudentmaybeexhibitingsuchsignsandsymptomsofaconcussion.Anystudentsuspectedofhavingsustainedaconcussionorotherheadinjuryduringaschoolactivityincludingbutnotlimitedtoparticipationininterscholasticsports,mustberemovedfromtheactivityandacademicsimmediately.Astudentandhis/herparent(s)/guardian(s)willbeinformedoftheneedforanevaluationforbraininjurybeforethestudentisallowedtoreturntoparticipationinschoolactivitiesandacademics.

Nostudentispermittedtoreturntotheactivityortoparticipateinotherschoolactivitiesoracademicsonthedayofthesuspectedconcussion.Anystudenthavingsustainedaheadinjuryisprohibitedfromfurtherparticipationinanyschoolactivitiesoracademicsuntilhe/sheisevaluatedforconcussion.Ifaconcussionissuspected,thestudentmustberemovedfromschoolactivitiesandacademicsandevaluatedbyalicensedhealthcareprovidertrainedinconcussionmanagement.Ifaconcussionisconfirmed,thestudentisnotpermittedtoreturntoparticipationinanyschoolactivitiesoracademicsuntilmedicallyclearedtodosobyalicensedhealthcareprovidertrainedinconcussionmanagement.Allacademicrestrictionsmustbeliftedpriortoparticipationinathletics.TheuseoftheAcuteConcussionEvaluation(ACE)CarePlanistheexpectedformofcommunicationregardingmedicalclearance(acopyoftheACEformisavailableintheschoolnurse’sofficeandontheThorntonAcademywebsite.)Itistheresponsibilityoftheparenttoprovidethenecessaryandappropriatedocumentation.TheACEformmustbereturnedtotheschoolnursepriortoattendinganyclass.Morethanoneevaluationbythestudent’shealthcareprovidermaybenecessarybeforethestudentisclearedforfullparticipation.Coachesandotherschoolpersonnelshallcomplywiththestudent’streatinghealthcareprovidertrainedinconcussionmanagementrecommendationsregardinggradualreturntoparticipation.Ifatanytimeduringthereturntofullparticipationinschoolactivitiesandacademicsthestudentexhibitssignsandsymptomsofconcussion,thestudentmustberemovedfromtheactivityandacademicsandbere-evaluatedbythetreatinglicensedhealthcareprovidertrainedinconcussionmanagement.*PleaserefertotheAthleticTrainingDepartment’sConcussionProtocol.CognitiveConsiderations

Schoolpersonnelshouldbealerttocognitiveandacademicissuesthatmaybeexperiencedbyastudentwhohassufferedaconcussionorotherheadinjury.

Theathletictrainerwillnotifytheschoolnurseandcoach(asapplicable)whenaconcussioninjuryhasoccurredduringaThorntonAcademyathleticeventtowhichthetrainerprovidedcareand/orwhenhe/shehasknowledgeofasuspectedheadinjury.Notificationwilloccurwithinthesameschooldayoratthestartofthenextcalendarday.Parentsareencouragedtoreportsuspectorknownconcussionorotherheadinjuriesthatoccuroutsideofschoolrelatedactivitiestotheschoolnurse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheparenttoinformtheschoolofsignsandsymptomsrelatedtoconcussionorheadinjuriesthatarerecognizedwhilethestudentisnotinschool.Theschoolnursewilltheninstitutethefollowingsteps:-contacttheparenttoacquiremedicalrecommendationsfromthechild’streatinglicensedhealthcareprovider;-informtheparentofThorntonAcademy’sconcussionpolicy-sharemedicalrecommendationswiththestudent’sguidancecounselor-thenursewillnotifyallschoolpersonnelresponsibleforsupportingtheacademicneedsofthestudentincludingbutnotlimitedto:homeroomadvisor,dean,andclassroomteachers(includingstudyhall)Schoolpersonnelshallaccommodateagradualreturntofullparticipationinacademicactivitiesasappropriate,basedontherecommendationofthestudent’sconcussiontrainedhealthcareproviderandappropriatedesignatedschoolpersonnel.ConcussionPolicyManagementTeam

TheHeadofSchoolwillappointaConcussionPolicyManagementTeam,whichmayinclude:theschoolnurse,theDirectorofAthletics,theDirectorofStudentServices,theDirectorofGuidance,theMiddleSchoolPrincipal,andmembersoftheAthleticTrainingDepartment.Theteamshalloverseeandimplementthispolicyandrelatedstandardsofcareforconcussiveheadinjuries.Thisteamwillidentifytheschoolpersonnelwhoshallbetrainedinconcussionsignsandsymptomsandtheschoolactivitiescoveredbythispolicy.Thepolicyand/orrelatedstandardsofcareshouldbereviewedwhengenerallyacceptedprotocolschange. ******************Equipment

Equipmentwillbewornonlywhenpracticingfororparticipatinginthesportforwhichitwasissued.Quittingasportrequirestheimmediatereturnofallborrowedequipment.StudentsareexpectedtopayThorntonAcademyinatimelymannerforanydamagedorlostequipment. ******************

Transportation

AthletesandteammanagersmustridetoandfromawaycontestsintransportationsuppliedbyThorntonAcademy,exceptincasesspecificallyapprovedinadvancebytheStudentActivitiesDirectorand/orcoach.Athletesareexpectedtobeneatlydressedfortravelingtoawaycontests. ******************Communication Goodcommunicationisahallmarkofastrongathleticprogram.Communicationamongallparties(athleticdepartment,coaches,student-athletes,parents)iscriticalforstudentstofullyenjoythebenefitsoftheathleticexperience. Astudentwhomakesateamrosterandthenquitsthesport(orisreleasedfordisciplinaryreasons)beforetheendofthatseason,relinquishestherighttoparticipateinanothersportinthatseason.AnappealmaybemadetotheStudentActivitiesDirectorinordertoparticipateinanothersportinthatseason.ThedecisionoftheStudentActivitiesDirectorshallbefinal.

A. IfastudentisinvolvedinseriousorfrequentviolationsofThorntonAcademy’sdisciplinaryrules,asjudgedbyreferralstothedean,thedeanmayinhis/herjudgmentimposesanctionsthataffectorevenprohibitparticipationininterscholasticathletics.ThesesanctionsareaboveandbeyondthesanctionsintheDefinedDisciplineProcedureAddendum,whichiscontainedinthestudentpolicyfolderhandedoutatthebeginningoftheschoolyear.

B. Theschoolmayalsoimposepenaltiesif,duringapracticeoragame,any

athleteusesvulgarorabusivelanguageorgesturetowardsateammate,opponent,official,coach,orspectator.Althoughthepenaltywillvarydependingupontheseriousnessoftheoffense,thefollowingisageneralguide:

• Firstoffense–awarning(acopyofwhichismailedtotheathlete’s

parent/guardian).

ItisunlawfulinMaineforpersonsunderage18topurchase,possess,orusecigarettes,cigarettepaper,oranyothertobaccoproduct.ItisalsounlawfultosmokeinpublicbuildingsinMaine.ThorntonAcademyprohibitssmokinganywhereoncampus(asofFebruary22,1993).

Separatefrompenaltiesimposedbylawenforcement,Thorntonimposes

penaltiesforsmokingorchewingtobaccoonoroffcampusduringaseasonastudentisparticipatinginasport.Theschoolenforcesthisrulebecauseitwantsstudent-athletestobehealthyindividuals.Thisruleappliesevenfor18-year-oldswhocanlegallysmoketobaccoorpossesstobaccoproductsoffcampus.Althoughthepenaltywillvarydependingupontheseriousnessoftheevents,thefollowingisageneralguide:

Thereareamyriadoflawsagainsttheuse,possession,orsaleofalcoholand/ordrugs.Separatefrompenaltiesimposedbylawenforcement,ThorntonAcademyimposespenaltiesfortheuse,possession,orsaleofalcoholand/orillegaldrugsonoroffcampus.Althoughthepenaltywillvarydependingupontheseriousnessoftheoffense,thefollowingisageneralguide:

• Firstoffense:Atwo-weeksuspensionfromparticipatinginathleticsanduse

ofThorntonAcademy’sathleticfacilitiesafterschool.Duringthe2-weeksuspension,astudentmustmeetwithhis/herguidancecounselortodiscusstheissuesrelatedtoyouruse,possession,orsaleofdrugsand/oralcohol.

• Secondoffense:Suspensionfromparticipationininterscholasticathleticsfortheremainderofthatsportsseasonandthenextsportsseason.

• Thirdoffense:Suspensionfromparticipationininterscholasticathleticsforonecalendaryearfromthedateofinfraction.

******************HazingandHarassmentReference:MaineAnti-HazingLaw(Statutes6553and10004) ThorntonAcademyiscommittedtothepersonaldevelopmentofeachstudentinourathleticprogram.TheThorntonAcademyAthleticDepartmentiscommittedtoprovidingasafelearningenvironmentforallparticipants,coaches,andsupporters.Asaresult,weunequivocallyopposeanysituationcreatedintentionallytoproducementalorphysicaldiscomfort,embarrassment,harassment,orridiculetoanyperson. Ourathleticdepartmentwillinterprethazingasanyactwhetherphysical,mental,emotional,orpsychological,whichsubjectsanotherperson,voluntarilyorinvoluntarily,toanythingthatmayabuse,mistreat,degrade,humiliate,harass,orintimidatehimorher,orwhichmayinanyfashioncompromisehisorherdignityasaperson. Reportedincidentswillbeinvestigatedpromptlyandinamannerwhichprotectstherightsofthepersonsfilingthecomplaint,thepersoncomplainedagainst,andtheschool.Student-athleteswhoparticipateinsuchactionswillbesubjecttodisciplinebythecoachand/orathleticadministrator. ******************Accusationand/orConvictionofaCrime

Separatefrompenaltiesimposedbylawenforcement,ThorntonAcademyimposespenaltiesforbeingchargedwithand/orconvictedofacrime.

Astudentchargedwithacrime,eitheramisdemeanororafelony,mayinthe

soundjudgmentoftheHeadmasterbesuspendedfromparticipatingininterscholasticathleticsuntiladjudication.

Astudentconvictedofamisdemeanormay,inthesoundjudgmentoftheHeadmaster,besuspendedfromparticipationininterscholasticathleticsforatleastonecalendaryearfollowingconviction.Ifconvictedofafelony,astudentshallbesuspendedfromparticipationininterscholasticathleticsforatleastonecalendaryearfollowingconviction.Attheendofthatcalendaryear,ameetingwillbeheldbytheHeadmaster,dean,StudentActivitiesDirector,andaguidancecounselor.TheHeadmasterwilldeterminethestudent’sfutureeligibilitytoparticipateininterscholasticathleticsatThorntonAcademy. ******************

Nothinginthispolicyisintendedtopreventacoachoraschoolofficial,inhis/hersoundjudgment,fromsuspendingastudentfrompracticeorplayforreasonsotherthanthoselisted.Furthermore,studentsandparents/guardiansshouldunderstandthatcircumstancesmaynecessitatecoachesandschoolofficialsatanytimemakingadditionalregulationswhichgoverninterscholasticathletics. ******************DisciplineAppealsProcess
