Thorndon Park Super Playground Stage 2 Concept Plan
Information Sheet and Feedback FormThorndon Park is recognised as a key regional park, providing a destination for residents, ratepayers and visitors to the Council area to enjoy active and passive recreation facilities.
The Stage 1 consultation for this project engaged 477 community members, including school students, users of Thorndon Park and those local to the area. The bird theme received very positive feedback and was well embraced by the Community. There was also a high level of support for the super playground with 83% of Respondents saying they would use the new facilities if they were developed. Thorndon Park Super Playground
Updated Concept PlanThis concept plan takes into consideration community feedback received during the Stage 1 Consultation. The Concept Plan still incorporates a Children’s Playground, Water Play area and Teenage Recreation area which were all well supported in the Stage 1 Consultation. They are also in the same location expanding northwards from the existing playground, with the Teenage Recreation area at the northern most point of the concept design.
Key changes to the Plan based on feedback includes:
• Further focus on accessibility and inclusiveness including retaining the liberty swing, accessible sand play, water play, slide, spinning carousel, table tennis, sling seat attachmentforflyingfox,blackboardorquietsensoryareain the cubby nook.
• Replacement of existing bat swing with similar swing.
• Providing larger pathways throughout the playground to incorporate wheel chairs and other mobility devices.
• Relocation of water play area from western side to eastern side of the concept plan to be closer to the public toilets and further away from the Reservoir. Also, water play will focus on jets, sprays, water that can be moved, pumped, raised off the ground and something children of all abilities can interact with. These types of water play activities will reduce some safety concerns raised around water quality.
• A larger vegetation buffer is proposed for the western side to increase safety, however fencing could be installed instead if funding is available.
• Thecustomshadestructurepresentedasaflockofbirdshas been replaced with three standard shade sails.
