THORPE HOUSE

THORPE HOUSE LANGLEY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Thorpe House Langley Preparatory School is situated in 10 acres of gardens, woodlands and playing fields and is close to the city centre. Facilities include an indoor swimming pool, fully equipped gymnasium, a large sports hall, dance studio, library, art studio, cookery room, science laboratory, IT suite and technology workshop. The entire site is networked with secure internet access. Pupils are taken from the age of 2 into Nursery or at age 4 into Reception Class. Entry into school thereafter is dependent upon availability and follows a trial day and receipt of a satisfactory report from the previous school. Children are prepared for many schools, but principally for entry to Langley School at the age of 11+. Qualified and experienced staff maintain a purposeful academic atmosphere, but there is a friendly and caring family atmosphere where children can discover individual talents and abilities so that they will be well prepared for the secondary stage of their education. A broad curriculum is followed, and classes are usually restricted to 16 children. English, Mathematics, Science and ICT form the core of the curriculum, but from Year 3 subject specialists teach Design Technology, Art, Drama, French, Music and Humanities.

Hockey, rugby, soccer, netball, cricket, rounders and tennis are the main team games. Activities operate at the end of the school day and offer the chance for children to try numerous other sports, music and drama activities, and have included sailing, ten pin bowling, dry slope skiing, archery, golf, and karate. The school is particularly strong at chess with many pupils representing the county and our first England player selected this year. Breakfast Club operates from 7.50am.

There is a fine tradition of drama and public speaking. There are drama productions for each section of the school every year and a Summer Concert that involves every child in the school. We participate in local speech, drama and music festivals and children can be taught and entered for LAMDA examinations.

Experienced and qualified staff also run the Nursery, which caters for 2 to 4 year olds. It is well equipped and has its own secure play area. Nursery hours are from 8.15am to 3.45pm, but Earlybirds operates from 8.00am and a child-minding service is offered after school. The Nursery has been Ofsted inspected and is a registered provider under the government scheme. It is open during school term time and for much of the holidays.
