    The answer to

    Where did you get

    that? isnt a store.

    Its a story.

    The fun begins by choosing

    your oyster from the bucket.

Next, the ring of a bell and

    shout of Aloha! and

    theres your genuine pearl.

    Then select a beautiful

    sterling silver or gold setting,

    perhaps a ring, pendant or

    matching earrings. Your pearl

will be mounted as you watch.

And not only will you have

an elegant piece of fine jewelry,

but a memory to share with

    friends and each other forever.

    Original. Authentic.

    34 activities / whale viewing

IIn the Hawaiian creation chant, Kumulipo, we hear of the birth of whales: Hanau ka palaoa noho i kai (Born is the whale living in the sea). As the largest ocean animal, the whale was

considered a majestic embodiment of Kanaloa, Hawaiian god of the ocean, its animals, water and growth on land and in the sea. Whales, called palaoa in general, were so revered by ancient Hawaiians that obtaining their ivory teeth to be worn as a lei niho palaoa (whale tooth pendant) was reserved only for members of the ruling class. Today, whales are still revered in Hawaii, particularly the Humpback referred to as kohola. From December through April, whale watchers f lock to the islands of Maui Nui to engage with these natural celebrities. Since it is estimated that 60 percent of the North Pacific Humpback whale population migrates to Hawaiis

waters each season, your chances of viewing a whale in action are very good. The seas around Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe have long been recognized as the hub of this social scene, providing frequent opportunities for observing whales in the wild from the shore or on a whale watch tour. As the nations only National Marine Sanctuary dedicated to the Humpback whale, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was established in 1992 with its headquarters in Kihei on Mauis south shore. World-renowned marine biologists and scores of researchers gather in these protected waters to collect data, and record and photograph whales every winter and spring. Researchers identify individual whales by the pattern of

    toursTours run through April.

markings and coloration on their tail f lukes, which are as unique as a fingerprint. Developing long-term case studies, they log characteristics and behaviors of returning individuals. Since Humpbacks winter in Hawaiis warm waters to mate and calve, they usually dont eat during this time. A Humpback mother and newborn calf will stay close to shore for nursing. The calf consumes about 100 gallons of his mothers fat-rich milk a day and can double in length during his first year. While the calf is growing and learning whale behaviors, like slapping a tail or pectoral fin against the water, he and his mother are accompanied by a young escort whale who appears to act as a bodyguard. When males are ready to get the attention of females for mating, their behavior goes into overdrive. The sheer force of their slaps and a move

known as the peduncle throw (the rear portion of the body including the f luke is thrown up out of the water and slammed down sideways) can be seen and heard from shore. Weather and ocean conditions affect the likelihood of seeing whales more than time of day does. Look for a blow (water vapor spout) against the horizon or a huge splash of white water exploding from the sea. The seasons first whale sightings typically take place in October. No matter how many times you witness these majestic beings, youll cherish the experience.

    35

fun facts Breaching - when a whale propels two-thirds or more of its body out of the water in a graceful arch. Spy hopping - when a whale pokes its head above the surface of the water to just below its eye and spins around to see its surroundings. Humpbacks are renowned for communicating by songthese complex, repetitive sounds can last between six and 18 minutes, and be heard underwater. Only males sing, usually in breeding and calving grounds. All sing the same song throughout their stay.

Supposedly Don the Beachcomber used two rums, lime and grapefruit juice, bitters and Cointreau in his concoction, while Trader Vics was totally different.
