More waves less wind on Cabo Verde

Dude, Feb. 2010...... where does the time go? Feb. was a radical month around the world for weather. Us here in Cabo Verde we’ve continued to have more surf than is normal and less wind than is normal . However, for me was a great sailing month as I received some prototypes of the TR-6. I definitely look forward to getting the final versions. I’m not sure how close to the final versions my sails are, but I’m sure that there is a more stable, much more locked in feeling than last year and especially on the 8.4 which feels unbelievable.

Had a sick day at Ponta Preta which was nice as I arrived straight from the capital ( hot, busy city) into 6’-8’ crystal blue peelers. I now ride my Ghost XT 5.3 instead of my Legend 5.7. I’m still waiting to get my 5.7, but I understand why the gave it the name Ghost XT as you really feel like there’s nothing in your hands, the rig is that light. Getting into the rhythm at Ponta Preta for me was a definite confidence builder as some people have questioned my wave riding ability simply because I decided to step away from PWA wave tour, but I can assure you that sailing at spots like Ponta Preta, experience will win out every time over youth and my experience takes me to places on the wave that make me feel young!

Mess with the best die with the rest

This year World Championships in Formula Windsurfing will take place very early. March 21st already more than 100 players and athletes will start the first race on the most important event in this class. For us Europeans, competition in this period of the year is a big challenge. It is much more difficult to prepare for the regatta in the middle of winter. But we are all in good mood, each one of us managed to sail a lot in the winter in warm countries, such as Egypt.


Venue of the competition this time is a lake in the Argentine town of Mendoza, near the border with Chile. As every year, already I can not wait to this happen. I will be in place since March 10th to know well the water area and stay fit with my sailing. I’ll update news as often as possible, so check out my new site that I just launched at www.MartaHlavaty.com and read how is it going on the competition. We’ve been busy at the loft working through the wave and freestyle sail lines. We generally start by making several different samples of the sail sizes that we use the most so that we can see and test the subtle shaping adjustments and their effect on performance. After getting several good sessions of switching back and forth on the new samples and also on the previous years production version we decide on which design is working best. After isolating the design adjustments on the common sizes it produces a theme which tends to relate through the rest of the range. That said, each size still has specific considerations and always receives plenty of individual testing. For 2011 you can expect some fine tuned wave sails which continue with the theme of soft feel and effortless handling while maintaining good power and wind range.

The trades are back and there have been quite a few good windsurfing days this past month. I had a couple of classic Maui style wavesailing sessions with big and burly surf together with nice, light, side offshore winds. Just enough wind to squeak out (after some chicken jibes) but light enough to keep the wave faces really clean. For contrast we recently also had some very windy, bumpy wind swell conditions that were good for getting some of the smaller sail samples on the water. We even got some good feed back from a couple of lighter sailors who had a chance to test the new 2.9 and 3.5 Legend 2011 prototypes. They have turned out quite well and I will be putting the final touches on them soon. This year we will have our most complete wave range ever. Whether you are wound up on a 2.9 Legend in the Gorge or Pozo or pumping on to a glassy wave on a 6.7 Ghost XT there should be a sail available to help everyone make the most out of each session.

Heyyyy Everyone, February was a great month for me. We had good conditions for the first twelve days of the month. I had many days on the Loco 5.6 and this is how I got the idea for new features for the 2011 Loco’s.

Having the idea of making the 5.6 be lighter I asked Barry and Art that we can have the XT material on the Loco sails.. well the answer was positive so at this point I am really looking forward to test new material in the Loco and find out how it would feel.

I am super excited to go to Maui this year in late March to start with the testing of the new design Loco sails and all the other small changes that Art and Barry did on the sails. We may also have the new size of Loco’s: 4.0 and 4.4 for the 2011 range. But this will have to be approve by the whole MauiSails team.

I did also had time to work on some new fin design & company and you will get some surprise freestyle fins in the middle of this year. I am super excited also about this :).

The last two weeks of the month we had no wind... nada, nothing. It’s just been SUPER HOT.. So I have been working a bit at the windsurf shop so that I can keep myself occupied.

I feel very motivated this year, and I am really looking forward to get my gear tuned up and have them ready in time for the tour. My freestyling skills are way better then last year. I can do more solid air moves on my 4.8 and even when I am on my 5.6 sail and I feel great about this:) The Locos are great and easy handling sails. But improvement for the 2011 sails will be even better.

This month I have just been thinking a lot. I still have the feeling that I will do good this year in the overall ranking. Each time I look at the picture when I was in Sylt it makes me so much more motivated.

Well for now I will just go to sleep and hope that 1st of March will begin a month of good wind so that I can get back on the water. I am longing for this..

It’s the start of March and I’m on the plane to the Caribbean looking back on a February in beautiful Cape Town. Arriving on the 10th of February we left straight for Elands bay on an epic wave forecast, but there ended up being hardly any wind. With a 5.8 Global I was able to catch waves when no other windsurfers could make it and even kite surfers had to retreat to the beach because the wind was too light, sneaking in 2 waves with hardly a breath of wind in silk glassy surf. The surfers could appreciate my efforts and let me have some waves.

Just to be out there and riding a couple waves was worth every km driving; swimming and balancing on the board after a long surf session earlier, another great day in the life of a windsurfer searching for waves. Further scored lots of windy session too of which the Starboard tack crayfish factory, Ijzerfontein and Milnerton light house where the funniest. And the banks at Sunset beach were really good this time.

One thing I want to say about the MauiSails I have been riding in the last season, they are light to use and they do most of the work for you, which can be a bit of an advantage over other sails. It helps that they work like a real wing! Together with a selection of 7 top ranked PWA sailors, we have been invited to compete in a long distance marathon of 107 nautical miles from Guadeloupe to Martinique.After quite a bit of preparation for that race including gym work, good food and lots of

windsurfing, only the new race sails are missing in my quiver. My boards, masts and fins I picked up from Holland before driving to Paris and catching a plane to Guadeloupe, hoping that the sails will arrive there in time for the contest.

On one day I was cruising around Table bay between Milnerton and Big Bay and easily covered a distance of 80 km, so I can sort of imagine how it’s going to be to sail more then double that distance .... over 1 tack! However hanging out in the Caribbean will be the reward and I’m sure it will be a lot of FUN! It’s thrilling to catch waves; competing in races or just cruising around checking the scenery and being out in nature exploring places is all a magical part of our wonderful sport.

I had a lot of fun in the mountains this month. Me and my friends were planning this trip for a long time. Finally our group with 23 people (uncles,sister,cousins...) went to Austria and it was amazing. For us here in Brazil this is something completely different from what we see everyday. The mountains and the city full of snow were beautiful. We had nine days of great snowboard action and the snow was perfect. We woke up around 5am to be the first ones on the top of the mountain to get the perfect snow. I really enjoy snowboarding. It’s a very nice sport and a good exercise for sure. In the end of the day my legs were burning!!

When I got back to Fortaleza I was training to get ready for the Calema Midwinters. This year many top guys are going and for sure will be a good preparation for the FW worlds later in March.

Now I’m finishing my bag and going to the airport. I’ll have an easy flight this time with a friend. I’m looking forward to arrive in Calema and get my new TR-6’s. I heard they are going really fast !!

Lots going on in February at MauiSails. This is always the time when the new race sails start to hit the waters around the world and we are already deep into wave and freestyle development. The warehouse here gets a stuffing with 2010 wave sails ready for...?? yep... huge wind and surf almost every day. Art has been having a great time out at Kuau testing and hopefully enjoying every session. The result?? refinement and evolution of select sizes and opportunity to evaluate the new Legend 2.9 and 3.5 in appropriate conditions.

As the month matured we had a week with Gonzalo to tune his new Formula sails before heading for Calema and the Mid-winters. He was pleased to find the new 12.0 going even better than the protos he was testing back home. The 10.0 and 11.0 got lots of TOW too since the wind has been blowing more than less these last weeks.sh

Just to spice things up near the end of the month, there was a full on tsunami alert and general evacuation of all low-lying places on Maui. This meant we had to get ’Cornelia’ out of the harbor asap. Luckily we were at a break in the work to prepare for taking out her namesake (Mom) that same day, so it was pretty painless with not too many messes to put away. The hardcore grinding and dust is now history, and there are signs of progress all throughout. All those evenings are showing results. The new bowsprit/pulpit is back on the boat and the rig is tuned for sailing again. Galley and fresh water system are next.

With samples and protos coming in now every day, March should be a rewarding time for our team when they begin to arrive for the Spring tuneup session soon.

We got wind in February, well not until about half way through the month, but I found myself on the water most days, chasing light wind in Kihei, a day on the west side, Hookipa wavesailing or showing up at Kanaha and rigging whatever it took to get time on the water. It becomes one big blurrrrrrrrr.

I know for sure we have been focusing on 2011 wave sails, and so far we are loving the small changes we are making to improve the sails. I keep saying this every year, it’s hard to improve very good sails, but with subtle changes to shaping and tension, you can achieve continued improvements.

We have had good reports about the TR-6 which is now drifting slowly into the markets, so we look forward to getting more feedback in the next months and will start soon to work on the race sails again. We had Gonzalo over here for a week at the end of the month to work on his Formula

gear, preparing for the Worlds. Wow, formula sailing is hardwork. Gonzalo and I were on it most days, sailing 12, 11 and 10m’s, getting fins tested, figured out his best board. I feel good about the time we spent together, lots of different combinations on the equipment was tested and he will now go into the World Championship this month with confidence.Lets see? Oh yeh, I ran a half Marathon in Wailea, and achieve my personal record of 1 hour 44 minutes, which I also set 3 years ago at the same event, so I’m happy I haven’t slowed down.
