MauiSails’ entry for the 2010 racing season is TR-6, the perfect evolution of easy to manage power and acceleration, comfortable handling, and impressive speed. World Championship results in Formula, and Pro Slalom and Speed wins are in the lineage of the TR design catalogue, and the feedback and observations of the competitors who test and perform with them provides the foundation of the development. Each year there is a search for the elusive ideal, and the TR-6 is our statement. Small adjustments to the outline increase tip span, reduce boom length, and in combination with batten angle changes, make the twist even and correct for each situation. A flexible material panel in the lower sleeve evens tension and allows for slightly more cam pressure with positive rotation. Sleeves are smooth and the powerful lower sections are stable for high end control and speed. The continued use of our custom load cell is developing a data base which helps us to maintain the same feel throughout the range and to make the transition from size to size and mast to mast progressive and dependable, assuring similar handling character and performance. By utilizing this scientific method of development we are able to define the tension required to adequately form the skin of the foil, bend the mast appropriately, and balance luff curve against twist. A soft feeling responsive wing is the final result.

da winteris here

Fall is rolling in on us , one of my favorite time of the years. Cabo Verde has already kicked in with some solid swell and just yesterday ( oct.30) we sailed some unbelievable surf at Little Hookipa and Curral Jaoul, 3 guys out, sunny and warm with 15 bottom turn waves at Curral Jaoul, quite a different setting to the begginning of Oct.

Oct. started right in the thick of the Sylt World Cup, where as many of you know I was able to win the wave title this year by a substantial margin, something that pleased me a lot and has still been a reason of celebration here in Cabo Verde up through the end of Oct.

Right after Sylt, I stayed in Europe through the Makkum Surf festival in Holland, which Angulo boards attended with much success and had a great time there with all the dutchies. You could already feel the winter chill rolling in in Makkum , but the dutch vibes and the title afterglow kept me warm enough through that event. Then I needed to make the trek to Munich and to Austria for a couple days of errands , and this was when winter decided to kick in. It was snowing on me in Austria and Munich and is cool as that was, the cold and being away from home was really starting to take a toll.

On Oct.15th I got on my final flight of the 2009 season from Frankfurt to Boa Vista and onwards to Sal, where I arrived to a very warm welcome and have been basking in the sunshine, ocean and very special feeling that comes with living on an island. It’s been a pretty amazing reception and you can see a real appreciation that the people have for their country being represented on a world stage and it encourages me to keep doing my best .

We have our windsurf center once again going under expansion and there’s been lots of parties, weddings and surfing so all in all went from a super gruelling and battling first half of the month to a super relaxed second half.

After flying back from Sylt I went straight to race on the International Regatta. We had five days of racing on the Formula gear and just felt good to switch all the freestyle equipment and get on that big machine. I don’t know why I like Formula boards so much, but always when i am on it it’s just great feeling.. Maybe it’s because I love windsurfing so much :)

We had great freestyle conditions here, mostly 4.8 and 5.2 sails. Each week I could have sailed four days with 5.2 and at times 4.8. I am getting better and more consistent in my freestyle moves and that makes me get on the water and train each day more and more. I took two weeks off of Gym Fitness because I have been spending too much time on the water, but I still go to the gym when I don’t do much on the water as this keeps my tempo and body fit..

Going to the gym helps me a lot, and I feel better each day. I feel healthy, I don’t get cramps and all that weird stuff. Overall I am doing good.

At the moment The wind is 5-10 knots and super hot on the Island and this weather will be like this for another two weeks for sure. I did also some SUP a couple days and fishing a bit and just been helping out around the Bonaire windsurf shop. I don’t like to be bored so I keep myself busy at the beach.

Well I hope you are sailing whereever you are because I can’t sail for these days :( sad but well what can you do about it.

Ciao and take care

What a nice month for me !! I had a lot of fun and spent a very nice time with my family and friends in Brazil. After the FW worlds in Santa Pola I had a short break to relax a little bit. It was good for me. I was very tired after that event. The north swells are starting to come in where I live in Fortaleza and I had some nice wave sailling days with good wind and waves.

Later I went to Ilha Bela. Beautiful place, good winds, and lots of races. We had the FW grand prix there. I finished 6th. The result was OK for me. I had one more opportunity to test my sails during a race.

Now I just won the FW event before our Brazilian Nationals. I’m very motivated to go there, do my best, and have a good result.

As I write this it is Halloween morning and ironically the first design file I open today is the TR6-66. Oh no, 666 is it an omen or does it mean that this will be the fastest sail ever, blazing a trail of fire behind it? Fortunately I’m not very superstitious but I still like the idea of a smokin’ fast race sail.

We have received many of the new TR-6 samples from the factory and are busy tuning and testing. So far the sails look great. The twist profile is smooth and continuous and we have managed to get the wide sleeve to fit even cleaner for a smooth aerodynamic leading edge. The refined outlines are turning out well too and work together with the shaping adjustments to produce an optimum twist pattern in the wind. We are fine tuning the cam pressure and leading edge profile for each size to improve stability and balance while maintaining easy cam rotation. GPS testing is showing speed improvements over previous years so we know that we’re on the right track.

On the water, we have been treated to some nice NW swells this month with generally lighter, side-off-shore winds. I’ve mostly been sailing on my 5.0 Legend and 5.3 Ghost XT. Every time that I use the 5.3 Ghost XT I get super stoked on its feather light handling and soft feel. The sail is so light that it even feels perfectly comfortable on my little 75L Quatro twin. I get the best of both worlds; the super clean wave faces due to light off-shore winds and the maximum maneuverability of an ultra-light rig and small board.

It’s been nice not to have obligations after Sylt and to spend some time with family and friends after all the competitions this season have finished. There was the European Surf Festival and Dutch Open in Makkum in the beginning of Oktober, Dennis Littel sealed it and became the overall champion in Slalom and Formula.... on MauiSails! Congratulations Dennis! Josh Angulo Wave came to chill out and show his new boards to the public with a massive stand soulfully decorated and a fresh new world tittle in the bag.

The Speed Sailing Nationals took place in Harderwijk at ’Strand Horst’, a big show up but unfortunately just not enough wind. Sander van Huizen riding for MauiSails/Fanatic had some runs of 68 kph, which was impressive in the light wind and nearly making the event official - but still just under the minimum required average of 65 kph.

Personally I like to wave sail at a place called the Razende bol or raging bull, which is a big sandbar or uninhibited island out in the North Sea close to Texel. Great scenery and fun conditions, there are also lots of seals around, looking curiously what’s going on with you and the colorful equipment flying over the water. Not a good place to break anything in the cold water; you have to be able to fully rely on your equipment 2 km out in the North Sea!

Exciting it was to find some new banks for Speed Sailing this week in the North of the country on the ’Waddenzee’ near the marine base in Den Helder. Good to wear booties otherwise you easily slice your feet open on the oysters and shells that made their home in the sand in some places. So I forgot to wear booties, but good potential for next time and the guys are on it. Some low pressure systems have been spinning off the Atlantic and autumn has brought some windy days already but it looks especially promising for the month of November as we must be due for a big storm soon here.

I went to Munich and helped my brother and sister-in-law in their new house - some painting, floor laying, and other stuff and it was great to spend some time together. While I was there I met with Craig and Karin Gertenbach in Oberhaching. We had a good meeting and straight after arriving back in Holland I tried some of the new Fanatic Falcon 2010 boards and that really impressed me.

After fifteen years of F2 I now decided to move on and change to Fanatic. This has been a big decision since I have been on the same boards for so long. I am really looking forward to receive my new boards soon and take them out. No better combination with MauiSails I reckon.

Good sailing!Peter Volwater H-24

Finally back home, very long year it was, and I needed a little of moms food and my girlfriend love to recover from so much travelling!!!

Sylt was a great spectacule this year. Lots of action in all the diciplines. We had one day of racing and I end up 9. I had very good speed on the 7.6 to finish better but somehow I manage to get some crashes at some marks with some other guys.

Buenas from Argentina

Watching Josh winning the world tittle was great too. Taty had a great event with his first personal win and it was great to see it as a team partner. After that I came back home and made some local promotion. I had an event on a lake up north in Cordoba. This is a very traditional spot where a lot of good Argentinian sailors come from. I saw many old friends there and I brought all my windsurfing toys so everybody could get in the water.

After that I had a rush trip to Miami for a the last of the Florida Slalom series. We had a nice three day event with all the florida racers. We had a pretty windy weekend so we manage to get a lot of action and I manage to wind the event. It was great to come there as always and I had a very nice time.

Back to ARG for an afternoon, change boardbags, and rush to Brasil for the formula grand prix at Ilhabella. I got stuck from 9 am till 1700 at the airport with no pickup so that was not very helpful for my body. I did the event and we had some good action but I was very tired…

Now back home again and waiting for some weekend races in my local spot in Buenos Aires. The summer has started here and the SE termic winds are kicking in..

Best regards, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel.

Octoberis for harvest

This month has been oriented around maintaining the steady progress towards completion of the next range of Team Race sails, the TR-6. It has been particularly exciting to see the new ideas come forward and the feedback being applied to get better results. There are a number of significant small changes that will result in definite performance improvements and racer satisfaction. Art has been doing a fantastic job interpreting and adapting all these into his design scheme. Of course, there are always some things that may not find their way into the process, but we are trying to get it all aligned as much as possible.

I want to say that Art continues to develop his ’eye’ for the proper relationships of shaping and tension and it shows in the smooth and relaxed look of the surface. He has a wonderful penchant for listening and taking action, and most importantly, he has a strong mind of his own and the ability to express his ideas with conviction. Each month it is a greater pleasure to be working with him as his understanding of the process evolves.

Personally, I have been getting to the boat, which is now safely in a slip at Maalaea Harbor, each afternoon about 3:00 or so, and diving into whatever needs to be done. This month, after ripping out the hot/cold pressure water system, the parallel 110V wiring, the forward head and all its plumbing, I was able to see deeper into the grimy engine bilge area and find two serious problems, either of which could have sunk the boat. Rotten hose clamps and decomposed brass plumbing parts literally fell apart in my hands. It was that close. But now she is stripped out and totally surveyed for things like that and we can be confident about staying afloat.

On the positive side, I completely rebuilt the mast step floors, painted out that bilge, and built new cabin floors as the foundation for finishing the simple furniture we need to be comfortable again. Using a head lamp, I can work until after dark, then head home satisfied I am making progress to the goal. In fact, on November 1, the mess was cleared away and stowed and we took her out sailing with Fred Haywood and son Zeppo aboard. Samantha and I did a blessing beforehand and celebrated her renaming. Forever more she will be known as CORNELIA, after my Mom, who will be here soon to go sailing with us, a remarkable thing considering she is 94 years old. Her love of sailing and the sea has always been there in our relationship and I am always thankful to be able to still have her along for the ride. AlohaBarry Spanier

I think so. Oh yes, first off was getting started on the TR-6 testing, good winds Maui enabled us to get some good days on the slalom sails, carefully finding our new direction and getting good results.

It was a big month for Triathlon in Hawaii with the Ironman World Championship taking place on the Big Island. I headed over, unfortunately didn’t race the event, but saw it close up and personal, as I was a volunteer out on the race course at about mile 18. Watching the pro’s suffer as they came out of the energy Lab in 100 degree heat, nothing like a windsurfing slalom race, or even a long distance race. We used to a few long distance races, I remember in San Francisco and Corpus Christi we had some long one’s but nothing like an Ironman Triathlon, where you deplete your body for over 8 hours (some of the age groupers suffered for over 14 hours). It was exciting to see another World Class event being put on, run smooth and athlete’s giving it there best.

MauiSails Boom Front EndA good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast.

MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market.

You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com

Back to Maui and into some wave sailing and more slalom testing. We are now seeing the winter swells coming in and although we had a week of no trades, there was enough to get out on the big sails and keep the testing going.
