sound system, and extended entertainment hours featuring DJ

Jeff Walden and the best in regional party bands. Hear it outside,

from the top of A-lift to the top of D-lift. In addition, more lockers

have been added, saving you the hassle of transporting your gear

back and forth. For the 3rd year in a row, Big Boulder Park was

voted among the top 5 terrain parks from TransWorld Magazine,a national snowboard publication. In addition to a snowmaking

fl eet with the latest in SMI Pole Cats, Big Boulder has freshly

Steam Train Excursion from Scranton to Tobyhanna

On Saturday, January 15th, Steamtown National Historic Site will

host a Mid-Winter Steam Train Excursion to the Tobyhanna Ice Harvest. A

trainload of travelers will journey by rail, from Scranton to the Tobyhanna

Station, and then transported to Mill Pond #1 to visit the annual Tobyhanna Ice Harvest. Many frozen lakes, as well as the headwaters of the Lehigh

River, are seen on this 27-mile segment of track. The excursion departs

Steamtown in Scranton promptly at 10:00am, and returns around 3:00pm.

To fi nd Steamtown from I-81, use exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway)

and follow signs to the main entrance on Lackawanna and Cliff avenues.

For ticket reservations and details, call (570) 340-5204, (570) 340-5200,

or 1-888-693-9391; choo-choo to www.nps.gov/stea!

Historic TobyhannaMillpond #1 Ice Harvest History happens during the 18th Annual Tobyhanna Mill Pond #1 Ice Harvest, planned for Saturday, January 15th. Volunteers will cut ice using authentic, turn-of-

the-century ice harvesting tools. The event will begin at 9:00am and continue until

the icehouse is full, around 2:30pm. You’re invited to watch, or to lend a helping hand! The ice harvest takes place on a

lake used by the commercial natural ice industry in the early 1900s. Ice was cut, stored in huge icehouses, and transported

by railcar, providing ice for household iceboxes throughout the New York metropolitan area. The late Bill Leonard Sr. of

Tobyhanna planned the ice harvest re-enactment as part of the Coolbaugh Township Bicentennial Celebration in 1994.

He began construction of a replica icehouse at the original site before he passed away. His family, friends, and neighbors

completed it, and held the 1st modern-day ice harvest in February 1994. Many local folks whose ancestors worked in the ice

industry now gather to keep the tradition.

A motorized antique ice saw is implemented for the initial cuts, and handsaws

are used to cut the cakes loose. Each ice cake, weighing 200 pounds, is pulled up

a ramp into the icehouse. The icehouse holds 50 tons of ice, and is insulated with

8”-thick sawdust walls. The ice is used by local organizations during summer pic-

nics. Natural ice was an important industry. Tobyhanna Millpond #1 was originally

dammed for the logging industry in 1856. The Pocono Mountain Ice Company

leased the lake from the Tobyhanna and Lehigh Lumber Company, and the 1st ice-

house was built in 1895. Horses pulled the ice up an incline to the house. A large

10-room icehouse was built in 1907 at 500’

long, 100’ wide, and 50’ high, with a steam

powered conveyor. This icehouse operated

until it burned down in 1939.

Passengers on a steam-powered train

from Steamtown National Historic Site in

Scranton will arrive at Tobyhanna Station

at 11:00am, for a 3-hour layover; the 1908

Tobyhanna Train Station and Museum on

Route 423 will feature its Christmas Village Display in conjunction with the Ice Harvest

event, and the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association Museum at 5550

Memorial Blvd. in Tobyhanna will offer hot chocolate and tours from 10:00am to

2:00pm. To fi nd the Ice Harvest, take exit 8 off I-380 to Main Street in Tobyhanna.

Turn onto Mill Street, go through the 1-lane underpass which becomes Lakeside

Drive, then ¼ mile to the lake and icehouse on the right. Signs will be posted.

The alternate Ice Harvest date, if weather or ice conditions are unfavorable, is

Saturday, February 19th. Call (570) 894-8205, (570) 839-7306, or (570) 894-4761 to

learn more!

Mid-WinterEagle Count The open water, fresh fi sh, and undisturbed habitat

plentiful in the Poconos attract hundreds of migratory bald eagles every winter. The region also boasts a growing,

breeding population of resident eagles. On Saturday and Sunday, January 8th and 9th, watch these majestic birds

yourself while helping The Eagle Institute collect data for the National Mid-Winter Eagle Count! Pick one locale, or

check out multiple viewing spots throughout the weekend. Download a form at www.eagleinstitute.org, or simply

report your fi ndings at the site’s Eagle Watch Forum.

Prime sighting locations are at Lackawaxen, and various places near the Delaware River. To learn where the

eagles are, you may call or drop by The Eagle Institute Winter Field Offi ce at 176 Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen at

the Roebling Bridge on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Or, visit online and see the Forum’s message board. For maps,

directions and more, call (570) 685-5960 or (845) 557-6162, or email [email protected].

Eagle Watch! Hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Pocono

Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania each winter in

search of open water, fresh fi sh, and undisturbed habitat.

In addition to migratory eagles, our region is home to a

growing, breeding population of resident eagles. Every

Saturday and Sunday from now through mid-March,

volunteers trained by The Eagle Institute staff popular

viewing locations at Lackawaxen and elsewhere along the

Delaware River, assisting eagle watchers in spotting these

majestic birds.

Eagle Institute staffers have spotting scopes, extra binoculars, eagle information, and directions to various viewing

locations. From April through September, eagle watching is discouraged because of the eagles’ sensitivity to human

disturbance during this critical time. Please respect the eagles and their young!

The Eagle Institute Winter Field Offi ce, 176 Scenic

Drive in Lackawaxen at the end of Roebling Bridge, is

open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and by appointment,

Ski & Stay & Tube with

Fernwood Hotel & Resort Now is the time to make your winter getaway! Fernwood Hotel and Resort offers special packages that make ski-

it easy and affordable to get out on the slopes. In addition, we are offering snow tubing packages that allow our guests

to snow tube at our Winter Fun Center equipped with both single and family tubes.”

rooms, we offer it all; amenities, convenient location, and specially priced lift and snow tubing tickets. Ski & Stay pack-

ages start from just $67.00 per person. It doesn’t get much more affordable than that, when you do the math of what it

costs to purchase lift tickets and a hotel room separately. But more importantly, it’s the best way to get out of hiberna-

tion and enjoy winter.”

The Winter Fun Center package includes a hotel room and

weather should not force people indoors. There is plenty to do that

DWGNRA Childs Park Rehabilitation Project The National Park Service (NPS) announces major rehabilitation work

at the George W. Childs Recreation Site, known as Childs Park, within the

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DWGNRA). Located in

Dingmans Ferry, it is a popular site; this long-awaited restoration work will

require closure of the area to protect the safety of visitors, and to allow the

contractors to complete the work effi ciently.

“Childs Park is a tremendous asset to Delaware Water Gap and to the

National Park system. It represents how natural beauty in the form of impressive

waterfalls and hemlock ravines can be enhanced and enjoyed by visitors through

well-placed hiking trails and picnicking facilities,” comments

Superintendent John J. Donahue. “We have a real opportunity to provide better facilities

and to rejuvenate the original landscape that George W. Childs wanted the people of

Pennsylvania to enjoy. I look forward to rededicating the site soon.”

Preservation work will improve the woolen mill ruins and Civilian Conservation Corps

structures, which detail George William Childs’ vision of creating trails for the public,

in 1892. During the closure, the NPS will make repairs to trails, bridges, parking, and

historic/cultural structures. Measures to maintain and preserve the forest and streamside

vegetation will be implemented. Dead trees will be removed, with most of the timber to

be used for erosion control and to provide nursery logs for new hemlocks.

The NPS cares for special places saved by the American people, so that all may

experience our heritage. The public is asked to respect all site closures during the

project. Volunteers are welcomed, to assist in tree planting, invasive plant removal, trail

maintenance, litter clean-up, and educational programs. Call the DWGNRA at (570) 426-
