Shawnee Erects Golf Bridge

for 100th Season The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort on River

Road in Shawnee-on-Delaware has once again

erected its golf bridge, ushering in the 100th season

of the renowned golf course. The resort annually

builds the iconic golf bridge, which leads players

to the 27-hole island course amidst the Delaware

River. Shawnee’s grounds crew still erects the bridge

using a fl at river barge, ladders, and elbow grease;

the same manner used for nearly a century!

Prior to the bridge, the island course

was accessed via horse-driven ferries. The

construction of the golf bridge coincides with the

100th anniversary of golf architect A.W. Tillinghast’s

golf course design career; Shawnee was

Tillinghast’s premier design. To celebrate its 100th

season, Shawnee offers free golf through April 21st;

guests of the historic course will pay only a $25.00

cart maintenance fee. Call 1-800-SHAWNEE

At the 30th annual

FAA Airports Conference,

the Pocono Mountains

Municipal Airport (MPO)

was named Eastern Region

Airport of the Year! The

award reads, “We would

like to acknowledge the

Authority for the work

resulting in the extension

and widening of runway

13-31 to 5,001 feet. This

project demonstrated that

a strong local funding

commitment, not relying

on FAA AIP alone, is the

right answer for making

a Sponsor’s vision for a

corporate class airport into a reality.” This refers to the funding partnership between the FAA, the PennDOT

Bureau of Aviation, and Monroe County Local Share Account sources.

“This is a testament to the sound vision that was shared by the Airport Authority, Monroe County

Commissioners, and the Monroe County Economic Development Corporation. The award also validates the

wisdom in the investment in the expanded runway and establishes the Poconos as a leader in infrastructure

investment in our region,” said Airport Authority Chairman George K. Strunk. “I congratulate the County

Commissioners, Economic Development staff and board, and most of all my fellow Airport Authority board

members for a job well done.” This success can serve as a model for governmental cooperation in the Pocono

Mountains.

Natural Landmark, and a State Park Natural Area. This genuine landscape terrain

existed. This fi eld is a jumbled assortment of loosely packed boulders, varying

in length from several inches to 25’.

Page 40: This Week in the Poconos Magazine

40 This Week in the Poconos

The Pocono Mountains of

Northeast Pennsylvania are known

for excellent coldwater trout fi sh-

ing; the season opens at 8:00am on

Saturday, April 16th. Healthy popu-

lations of Brook Trout, Brown Trout,

and Rainbow Trout abound in local

waters, promising a challenging fi ght

and wonderful eating. Miles of cold,

clear streams have parking close to

the water, but some are accessible

only by packing up your gear and

hiking in. Catching trout is what it’s

all about; here are a few pointers to

tip the odds in your favor.

Gearing Up: Purchase your li-

cense and tackle. A rod is between

5’ and 7’ long. The longer it is, the

farther and more accurately you

will cast. The shorter the length, the

easier it is to travel through brush

along the stream. Reels include spin-

ning, spin-casting, bait-casting, and

fl y-fi shing. A spinning reel is a good

choice because it can be used in all

types of freshwater fi shing. Although

it requires some casting practice, this

reel will pay off with greater distance,

accuracy, and a high retrieve speed.

Your line is the link between you and

the fi sh. It must be strong enough to

resist abrasions, yet thin enough to

achieve good casting distance and

Go Fishing in the Pocono Mountains!Go Fishing in the Pocono Mountains!a natural presentation; 4 to 8-pound

test is ideal. Fishing line comes in

bright fl uorescent colors which are

invisible to the fi sh but highly visible

to you. Use a tackle box to hold and

organize your equipment, and a fi sh-

ing vest allows for hands-free hiking

and fi shing.

Check the weather forecast,

dress properly, and wear waterproof

boots. Waders and hip boots are de-

signed for trout fi shing, as you can

cross the stream and fi sh while stand-

ing in it for more casting freedom

and better access to trout hideouts.

Polarized glasses cut glare, allowing

you to see submerged hiding spots;

you may even see the trout! Most

anglers prefer to net the fi sh, rather

than landing it on the bank.

Live bait includes worms, min-

nows, and insects. For worms, place

a short-shank hook lightly through

the body 2 or 3 times. Add a split

shot sinker, a bobber, or just throw

it in. Minnows should be hooked

through the lips or under the dorsal

fi n; don’t damage the bait or use

a heavy hook, as the bait should

swim around and look lively. Refer

to the rulebook you received when

you bought your license, as some

streams are posted that only artifi cial

lures may be used, and fi nes are im-

posed on violators.

Artifi cial lures

include spinners,

spoons, fl ies, and

imitation minnows.

Artifi cial lures re-

quire more skill be-

cause you provide

all the action, fool-

ing the fi sh into per-

ceiving the bait as

alive and edible. The

best spinners and

spoons for Pocono

trout are between

1/16th and 1/8th

ounce. Imitation

minnows should

be 1”-2” long. Flies

imitate insects or

minnows. Fly-fi shing

to imitate insects or

minnows requires

special equipment,

study, and practice but the benefi ts

are many; fi sh can be lured to strike

a well-presented fl y. Aquatic insects

hatch underwater; a skilled fl y-fi sher

will learn which insects are hatching,

and use a fl y imitating that insect.

This is called matching the hatch. Think like a Fish! Know trout

habits and lifestyle. These smart and

very cautious fi sh seek places where

they are protected from predators

and fast currents. Hideouts include

still water below rocks, under ledg-

es, around logs, and in deep pools.

Flowing water carries minnows and

insects; trout stay near moving water

to watch for food, but not in the cur-

rent because they’d soon tire. Trout

cruise shallows in search of food in

the early morning and late evening.

When surveying water, imagine

where trout would fi nd food and

shelter.

Approach a stream quietly;

heavy footfalls, commotion in the

water, and loud voices spook trout.

Cast your lure upstream, and the cur-

rent will carry it past the fi sh; or, cast

downstream and reel back through

it. Sink a worm into a deep hole, and

let a hungry trout sniff it out. When

you feel a bite, pull sharply to set the

hook, lodging the barb in the trout’s

mouth. Play the fi sh until it’s tired,

and keep it from swimming into fast

currents, brush piles, or over water-

falls that may break the line or dis-

lodge the hook. Keep the line tight

so the fi sh can’t throw the hook,

and net it when you bring it close

enough.

Be creative in your presenta-

tion, experiment with techniques,

switch lures or bait, fi sh the surface

instead of the depths, and vary your

retrieve speed. Only half the fun of

fi shing is the catching; part of the

enjoyment comes with outsmarting

the fi sh! Fishing can be found on

private waters, but ask the property

owner for permission to fi sh, and of-

fer a share of your catch. If you’re

looking for a sure thing, try a fi sh

and pay lake. No license is required,

tackle and bait are provided, and

you simply pay for what you catch;

fi sh on!

PennDOT Tipsfor Spring Driving

April showers bring May fl owers! The warmer temperatures of spring are

eagerly anticipated, but they often bring rain along for the ride. Pennsylvania

Department of Transportation (PennDOT) cautions drivers to use extra care

when traveling during wet weather. Water affects your ability to see clearly and

to maneuver a vehicle. Hydroplaning happens when your vehicle’s tires lose

contact with the roadway, riding on a fi lm of water; it can happen at any speed

and on any road surface.

PennDOT offers these tips for safe driving:

•• Under state law, if your wipers are on, your headlights must be on. •• If heavy rain limits visibility, pull your vehicle off the roadway and put on your emergency fl ashers. •• Accelerate slowly and brake gently and steadily. •• Allow at least 2 vehicle-lengths’ distance from the vehicle in front of you.

•• Make sure tires are properly infl ated and have suffi cient tread depth.

PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler, P.E., says, “We are encouraging motorists to take advantage of 511PA and check traffi c and weather conditions before they leave,” Biehler said. “We also want to stress that if you must call 511 from the road, pull over to a safe place before making the call. Your full attention should be on the road at all times when you are driving.”

511PA is free and available 24/7, providing traffi c delay warnings, weather

forecasts, traffi c speed, and access to 440+ traffi c cameras. See www.511PA.

com, or call 511 from any phone. For more driving tips, plus highway
