Now thru mid-March – Eagle
Watch! In winter, hundreds of
bald eagles migrate to the Pocono
Mountains in search of open water,
fresh fi sh, and undisturbed habitat.
In addition to these visiting migrants,
the region is also proud of a growing,
breeding population of resident
eagles. Every Saturday & Sunday
from January 1 through mid-March,
trained Eagle Institute volunteers will
staff popular viewing locations at
Lackawaxen and elsewhere around
the Delaware River to assist eagle
watchers in sighting these majestic
birds. Eagle Institute staffers have
spotting scopes, extra binoculars,
and helpful information for eagle
watchers, and can direct visitors to
other viewing locations. From April
through September, eagle watching
is not encouraged because of
the eagles’ sensitivity to human
disturbance during this critical time.
Please respect these resident eagles
and their young! The Eagle Institute
Winter Field Offi ce at 176 Scenic
Drive in Lackawaxen (at the end of
the Roebling Bridge) is open every
Friday through Sunday from January
until mid-March. Call the offi ce or
drop by to learn where eagles are
being sighted, or visit their web
page at www.eagleinstitute.org and
see the “Eagle Forum” message
board. For maps, directions and
more information, contact The
Eagle Institute at (570) 685-5960 or

Look at life-size history at Eckley
Miners’ Village, an authentic 19th-

March 4th is Charter Day
Happy Birthday, Pennsylvania! Friday, March 4th is Charter Day, the anniversary of the grant-
ing of the Charter of Privileges to William Penn by King Charles II of England in 1681; this docu-
ment declared the offi cial identity of Penn’s Woods… Pennsylvania! Typically observed on the 2nd
Sunday in March, the 13th this year, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites open
admission-free in its honor. Learn more at www.ushistory.org and www.phmc.state.pa.us. From the Pennsylvania State Archives: “Essential to Penn was freedom of worship. He had become a member
of the Religious Society of the Friends of God, commonly called Quakers. They did not attend services in their parish
churches. In private homes and plain meetinghouses, they worshiped in silence unless a Friend were inspired by the
Holy Spirit to speak. They permitted women to address their meetings. They refused to swear oaths and were pacifi sts.
As a result, the English magistrates physically abused, fi ned, and imprisoned them. Penn himself was confi ned to the
Tower of London at times. Consequently, on June 24, 1680, Penn asked King Charles II (1660-1685) for a charter for
land in America. The only available tract in eastern North America lay west of New Jersey, north of Maryland, and south
of New York, an area that England had conquered from the Dutch in 1664 and which the King had given to his brother
James, the Duke of York. After appropriate discussions, the King granted Penn’s request on March 4, 1681.”

Daylight Saving TimebeginsSunday, March 13th Spring forward! Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 13th,
so set your clocks ahead 1 hour. Mark your calendar!
PennDOT OffersDaylight-Saving TimeSafety Tips for Drivers
Daylight-saving time begins Sunday morning, March 13th, at 2:00am with
everyone moving clocks ahead 1 hour. Along with the days getting longer,
this hour difference in time changes the daylight pattern for drivers, and can
throw some motorists off their schedules. Losing an hour of sleep can lead to
drowsiness, which is potentially dangerous when operating a motor vehicle. To
help drivers be as safe as possible during the change to daylight-saving time,
PennDOT recommends the following:
• Plan to get at least 8 hours of sleep Saturday night.
• Adjust your sleep pattern to the time change. Go to bed ½ hour earlier than your normal weekday
bedtime on Saturday night, and sleep ½ hour later on Sunday morning.
• If you need more sleep, take a nap in the middle of the afternoon.
• Avoid caffeinated beverages and foods in the afternoon and evening.
• Avoid eating a heavy meal or drinking alcohol too close to bedtime.
• On Sunday night, go to bed early enough to get at least 8 hours of sleep.
• Read labels carefully on over-the-counter medicines for warnings such as "may cause drowsiness" or
"avoid driving a motor vehicle.”
• Be aware that coffee or other sources of caffeine are short-term stimulants only.
• If a prescription medication causes drowsiness, ask your doctor for a non-sedating alternative.
• Take breaks during long trips. Get out and stretch every 2 hours. Sleepy drivers should quickly fi nd a
safe place to pull off the road and switch drivers or rest.
Spring forward, and stay safe, in the Poconos!
