This Week at St. Barnabas Dress Down Tomorrow for Harvey

In the spirit of “I am Third,” our theme for Service Learning this year, St. Barnabas will be holding a Dress-Down Day tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 8) to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Students may bring $3 to dress down in St. Barnabas gear or red and white school-ap-propriate clothing. Part of the funds raised will go directly to help Robinson Elementary School on the east side of Houston, whose students and school have been greatly af-fected by Harvey. Our attention was called to this school by a St. Barnabas youth ministry alum.

Another portion will be donated to the NCEA (National Catholic Educational Association), which is sponsoring a national fundraiser to help Catholic schools affected by Hurricane Harvey. Thank you for your support of St. Barn-abas and our efforts to help those in need.

This Week’s “I am Third” Ambassadors:

Kendi Freelain (7th): Mrs. Preabt said Kendi has been very wel-coming to our new students.

Lillian Hurd (K): Mrs. Foley noticed Lilly politely remind her neigh-bors to be silent in the hall by using a silent hand signal Kinder-garteners use.

Reagan McKenna & Milena Burnley (Pre-K): Mrs. O’Hara says these girls have been doing a great job of including our new students in their play.

Channing Hill (K): Mrs. Foley saw Channing identify the person who left a food container on his lunchroom table and return it to her politely.

Kenji Taylor (K): Mrs. Foley noticed Kenji helping to organize ev-eryone’s pencils point down in their cups before joining the rest of the class on the carpet.

Nathan Maclay-Ryan (K): Mrs. Foley shares that Nathan helped push in chairs at his table without being asked.

Principal’s Corner Dear Parents/Guardians:

I look forward to seeing you all at tonight’s Back to School Night. There you will hear from our new pastor, Fr. Jim Donovan. Additionally, tonight I am excited to share with you our plans for this year and beyond at St. Barnabas. The evening begins in the church at 7 pm, and please remember that due to the presence of alcohol at the reception following, this is a parents-only event.

Morning Coffee with Principals & Mass, 9/20In an effort to further our students’ Catholic Identity and understanding of the Eucharist, 1st- 8th grade students attend mass weekly on Wednesdays.

We encourage all available parents and younger siblings to join us at the weekly 8:45 masses. On Wednesday, September 20th please join Mr. Walsh and me to kick-off this weekly gathering at the St. Barnabas Park, weather permitting, for an 8am cof-fee meet-and-greet prior to school mass. We will be attending once per trimester to chat with parents. We hope to see you there!

Big Bucks, our one annual school fundraiser raffle, kicked off last weekend when every school family received their 3 tickets (already paid for in their first month’s tuition) in their Info Sunday packets. Thank you to the many families who already turned in their tickets and to our Ticket Captains, Dominic Wizgird, Bonnie Flannery, Colleen Bilecki, and PJ

McGrath, who have additional tickets for families interested in selling more and be-ing included in addi-tional raffles!

For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit our website and click under “Big Bucks.” Ten early bird winners will be drawn after 4 pm mass on 9/23, and the Grand Prize winner will be drawn at Bottles, Bites & Brews on 10/14. Remember: you must turn in to win!

September 8, 2017 Dear St. Barnabas Parents and Guardians,

We are thrilled to be participating in the Archdiocese of Chicago and Catholic Charities new initiative, the Soup-er Stadium Challenge, this fall, an effort to help eliminate hunger in our community. As shared in the letter from Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, and Rev. Monsignor Michael M. Boland, President of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Challenge asks every Catholic school student, teacher and staff member to donate (at least) one non-perishable food item to fill the shelves of Catholic Charities’ food pantries.

The goal is to collect enough food to fill every seat in Soldier Field…twice! This collection will provide more than 100,000 meals to Chicagoans in need. The Challenge has support from Solider Field and Charles Tillman, retired Chicago Bears cornerback, who has agreed to be the spokesman for the initiative.

As part of the Challenge, 6th grade teachers will also integrate hunger and food insecurity themes into their curriculum so this initiative moves beyond a food drive and into a learning and growing experience for our school children. As part of our participation in the Challenge our school will be entered into a drawing to win a variety of prizes, including autographed items from Charles Tillman, a tour of Solider Field, an American flag that has been flown over Solider Field, and more! If you would like to participate in the Challenge, please have your child bring in his/her donation(s) to their homeroom between Tuesday, September 12 – Friday, October 6. If you would like to make an online donation, please visit SouperStadiumChallenge.org. Every single donation helps; please give what you can. Together we can help eliminate hunger and make difference in the lives of those who are most in need.

Continued blessings,

Mrs. Jayne Douin

Mrs. Kerry Kerr
