Priortoplayingthissmall-groupgame,selectfourorfivedifferentletterstofeatureandrandomlyplacemultiplecopiesofeachcorrespondingpicturecard(pages118–122)onatabletop.Asthechildrenwatch,writeonawhiteboardaletterthatmatchesoneofthelettersdisplayed.Callonseveralvolunteerstoeachlocateandpickupamatchandnametheletter.Continueplayinginthiswayuntilallthepicturecardshavebeencollected;thenrepeatthegametorein-forcerecognitionofotherletters.

Concentrating on PairsLocating matching letters
ThetraditionalgameConcentrationgiveschildrenachancetomatchlettersandstretchtheirvisualmemoryskills.Maketagboardcopiesofthelettercards(pages123–128)formatchinglowercasetouppercaseletters.Chooseafewmatchingpairs,perhapsfourtobegin.Placethesecardsface-downonatabletop;thenhavechildrentaketurnsflippingovertwocardsinsearchofamatchingpair.Whenoneisdiscov-ered,thefinderkeepsit.Cardsarereturnedtothefacedownpositioniftheydon’tmatch.Whenallthematcheshavebeendiscovered,addanadditionalmatchingpairofcardstothesetandplayagain!

Betterfindyourbestlisteningearsforthisactivity!Giveeachchildapicturecard(pages118–122)andaskhimtowhisperthenameofitsletterinyourear.Ifyouhavefewerstudentsthanalphabetletters,preparetohaveapuppetorstuffedanimalholdeachleftoverlettercard.Thencalloutthelettersinalphabeticalorder.Eachtimealetteriscalled,thestudent(ortoy)holdingthecorrespondingpicturecardcomestothefrontoftheroomandstandsinline.Havethechildrenreciteallthelettersrepresented;thencalloutthenextletter.Whenthealphabetiscomplete,askthechildrentohelpyousingthealphabetsongusingaveryslowtempo.Challengeeachchildtolistenandholduphisletterwhenitismentionedinthesong.

Here’salong-termprojectyouryoungsterswilllookforwardtocompletingandsharing.Whenyouintroducealetter,havechildrencolorandcutoutacopyofthecorrespondingpicturecard(pages118–122)andglueeitherthematchinguppercase(pages123–125)orlowercase(pages126–128)cardinthespaceonthelargercard.Storethecompletedpicturecardsinseparatepersonalizedenvelopesuntileachchildhasoneforeachletterofthealphabet.
