Kent State University at Ashtabula Sixty-Sixth Commencement Ceremony
During the 2016-2017 academic year, Kent State University at Ashtabula is celebrating 50 years of excellence in nursing education. Kent State Ashtabula opened in 1958. Nearly ten years later, the campus began offering the associate degree in nursing in 1967. The first nursing class consisted of 15 students. Students took classes in Main Hall, and Mary Ellen Kocis was the first program coordinator.
Throughout the years, the program continued to grow to serve the needs of Ashtabula County and beyond. Most notably in recent years, the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program was added to help area nurses who held an associate degree earn their bachelor’s degree. Programs were also added to help Licensed Practical Nurses and paramedics earn their associate degree in nursing. Over the years, the program has had several directors, including Estella Stofko and Dr. Jeanne Novotny, as well as Dean Susan Stocker, who directed the program from 1999 until becoming dean of the campus in 2001.
There are currently a total of 145 students enrolled in the Associate Degree in Nursing program. Today’s students enjoy the benefits of the state-of-the-art Robert S. Morrison Hall, which opened in 2009. Morrison Hall houses hospital-like nursing labs that enable students to practice their skills in the campus’ patient simulation center. The high-fidelity patient simulators were purchased in part through a grant from the Ohio Board of Nursing and allow students to develop, refine, and practice their skills in a realistic clinical situation. The simulators help students gain confidence in their abilities and prepare them for jobs in the field of nursing.
Celebrating 50 Years of Nursing
Alumni, current and former faculty and program directors gathered at an event celebrating 50 years of the nursing program at Kent State Ashtabula.

Richard L. Dana, Esq. Attorney, Law Office of Richard L. DanaAdjunct Professor, Kent State University at Ashtabula
Attorney Richard Dana has been practicing law in Northeast Ohio for over 20 years, currently working in private practice that has included client representation at all levels of our State Courts, the Northern District of Ohio, and the Federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Dana is a 1991 graduate, with University Honors, from the Ohio State University, and a 1995 graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Law. During law school, he was a Law Clerk for Judge Joseph E. Mahoney of the Eleventh Appellate District. Following graduation from law
school, he continued to clerk for Judge Mahoney, and later, Judge (now Ohio Supreme Court Justice) William M. O’Neill.
Actively engaged in charitable activities throughout Ashtabula County and Northeast Ohio, Dana’s involvement includes serving as Past-President of the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, as well as Past-President of the Ashtabula County Bar Association, and Geneva Rotary. He is a current member of the University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center Board of Trustees, President of the Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum, and is a 2013 graduate of LEADERship Ashtabula County. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to the law as well as the history of the Underground Railroad within our area, including a presentation at the White House in February of 2016. He will speak later this month, moderating a panel discussion as part of the grand opening of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center in Church Creek, Maryland.
Dana has been recognized for his commitment to Ashtabula County, and his engagement in the community. In addition to his work as an attorney, he worked for over nine years as an Acting Judge when needed at Western Area Court in Geneva, until Judge Richard L. Stevens’s retirement in 2012. For the past seven years, Dana has actively taught the next generation of legal professionals as an Adjunct Professor of Sociology, Justice Studies and Criminology, at Kent State Ashtabula. He has been a program organizer for the Ashtabula County Bar Association’s annual Law Day and other special events within the area legal community. But, he is perhaps best known to locals for wearing his “chef ’s hat” on summer weekends, cooking at family-owned Geneva-on-the-Lake landmark restaurant, Eddie’s Grill.
Dana is married to Judge Marianne Sezon, whose family has owned Eddie’s for over 66 years. Richard and Marianne celebrated their 18th anniversary of marriage last year, and make their home in Austinburg, Ohio.
