LETTER FROM PASTOR REBECCA

This month we emerge from the season of Epiphany and enter into the season of Lent. The jour-

ney through Lent is often a time of self-reflection and discipline as we seek to grow in likeness of Christ.

Traditionally, Lent was and is a time for new converts to study and examine the changes that must come

in their lives if they choose to welcome Christ into their heart. However, it is also a vital time for us who

are actively involved in the ministries of the church; it is an opportunity for us to renew and revitalize our

walk of discipleship.

There are many different disciplines that can aid us during Lent as we seek to grow in our disciple-

ship- prayer, study, worship, to name a few. One of the more common Lenten disciplines is to give some-

thing up, like chocolate, soda, or ice cream. It is one of the ways in which we come to experience sacri-

fice in our life, and on Easter we celebrate the abundance of life as we resume these pleasures in our life.

Only in his book, Giving Up Something Bad for Lent, James Moore invites us

to take this Lenten discipline a step further so that we might grow in our like-

ness to Christ. What if this Lent we choose to give up one bad habit or atti-

tude that we would be better off without? What if this year we work to give

up something permanently that is destructive to us and others, like jealousy,

worry, judgment, anger? Through our study and worship let us take time this

Lent to encourage and support one another to give up something bad so that

we might live more like Christ.

Blessings,

Pastor Rebecca

GIVING UP SOMETHING BAD

None of us is perfect. All of us have some bad habit we could afford to get rid of because it keeps us from living as Jesus desires. This Lent we will consider some of the many habits we can afford to give up because they are harmful and not reflective of who we want to be as people of faith. Join us Sundays for worship and/or Wednesday evenings for small group discussion.

FINANCE COMMITTEE

What is an EFT? This is an electronic funds transfer from your checking or savings account (whichever you choose). Using this option allows the finance committee a more complete idea of what the church’s donations will be each week or month. t is easy to set up an account. Get a donation form from the office. You list the amount you want taken

from your account, and what date you want it to be transferred. (You can pick weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.) Then you need to give the form and a voided withdrawal ticket from the account you want to use, to either Debbie Baker or Nancy Brinkman. Then just record the amount on the day you have chosen, in your personal records. You’re done! You don’t have to worry about getting your envelope to church because you missed a Sunday. The funds come in automatically. Worry-free donations coming into the church. We all win! Nancy Brinkman, Recording Secretary.

LABRYINTHS The labyrinth, which has origins as far back as 4,000 years, symbolizes the spiritual journey we are all on in life. It is a prayer tool that can help us find our center and be present with God. While labyrinths look like a maze there are no false turns or dead ends. It is one continuous path that leads to the center. Often as people walk the labyrinth they find their minds quieting so that they are better able to reflect on their life and listen for God. As one walks a labyrinth one is invited to be present to the moment, being attentive to how the body feels, what one is thinking and feeling. Sometimes this means walking the labyrinth quickly, while other times a person might move slowly, even stopping at different moments. The first stage of walking a labyrinth is the very beginning, of walking into the labyrinth. There is no judg-ment made about what one is thinking or feeling, but rather acceptance and acknowledgment. As a person walks, he or she may pray a simple prayer like, “Be still and know that I am God.” It may a time to ask oneself, “What am I feeling?” “What is going on in my life right now and how do I feel about it?” It is a time to name joys and celebra-tions, as well as frustrations and concerns. It is what we bring to the center, to God, and what we are letting go of. The second stage, often called illumination, is time spent in the center. This is a time to open oneself up to God, to listen and receive a word from God. Often people take time to pray in the center. The third stage begins when a person leaves the center and begins the journey back out to the world. It is a time to reflect on the message heard from God, asking oneself what difference it makes. Perhaps the difference can already be felt even while walking, with greater confidence or peace. It may be that ideas are being formed of what to do. Sometimes it is helpful to take some time after walking the labyrinth to talk with someone, to journal, to draw to further reflect on the experience. At times people feel propelled to go right back in and walk the labyrinth again. It is an experience that is unique for everyone and each time that a person walks. This Lenten season a labyrinth will be available in the library at the city site. Feel free to drop by and use this prayer tool during any of the following times:

Sunday 9 AM—11 AM Monday 8 AM—3 PM, 5:30—6:45 PM Tuesday 8 AM—Noon, 6—7 PM Wednesday 8 AM—3 PM, 6:30—8 PM Thursday 8 AM—3 PM, 6—7 PM

If you have any questions please feel free to talk with Pastor Rebecca.

BELL CHOIR

We have been practicing a new song for the past month. Due to the Lenten Services beginning on March 1st, we will not have practice on Wednesdays, but hopefully we will pick another day to practice. There are 4 bells not being played, due to our small choir. We can use your help. If you could come and play just one bell, that would help. You DO NOT need to read music to play in the bell choir. If you are interested in play-ing the hand bells, contact Nancy Brinkman at 833-2614.

COMMUNITY EASTER FELLOWSHIP MEAL

Easter Sunday, April 16 · Noon—1:30 PM · City Site

Remember Easter Bonnets and a pretty new dress to wear to church on Easter morning? Remember watching the movie “Easter Parade” that weekend? Remember not getting to hunt for your Easter basket until after sunrise service at church? Remember your whole family getting together for din-ner and playing with all the cousins? These traditions have changed and evolved as we have grown up and started our fam-ilies. New traditions were formed as we combined both spouse’s ideas about what was the important practices from their past. New Life UMC has started a new tradition also as we have joined together to make Easter an important celebration for the whole community. We offer a variety of services and times for our church family and guests to worship the Risen

Christ. We offer a free fellowship meal for anyone hungry for dinner or more importantly hungry for family and companionship on this special Sunday. Each year we touch more lives!

You give so much to make this event happen. You contribute your time, money, cooking talents, your wel-coming smile, and so much more. You are such an important part of this tradition. We want to encourage you to continue being part of this community event. Last year we served over 150 meals. We had a big increase in the meals being delivered to people in their homes. We are making a difference in their lives. Most attendees are re-peats from the previous year with a friend or two brought along to share in the meal and fellowship. Well done to all of you.

The committee is open to suggestions and new ideas to keep this event timely and appropriate to meet the needs of our church family and community. The Miriam Circle will be meeting on Wed., March 1st (Ash Wednesday) and Wed., April 5th to discuss and plan this yearly undertaking. You are welcome to join us as we make plans for the meal on April 16th. Please, let me or the office know if you will be continuing your service, donations, and/or attendance this year. I know so many of you say – I always help, donate, attend but we don’t know that you are continuing your tradition for another year. Your assistance is greatly appreciated but we would also appreciate knowing if you are continuing in your service. It makes it easier to plan work schedules and food preparation. Thank you. Easter is on April 16, 2017. We will be serving from Noon – 1:30 p.m. We will be inviting the community to join us as is our tradition. Many hands and hearts are needed as we continue to increase the number of people served and lives touched. A YCCOM form will be available after the planning meeting. Please give me a call at 920-833-6048 and leave a message or call the church office.

CHANCEL CHOIR

The chancel choir practices on Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. As you may have no-ticed, we need more people to join us. With Easter right around the corner, we welcome any persons who would like to join us. We aren’t able to sing much of the sheet music we have, due to a small choir. Even if you can’t make it every Sunday, filling in a Sunday or two will help.

OUR KIDS WEEKEND SNACK BAG PROGRAM

Random Act of Kindness from a Stranger We were shopping at Sam’s Club on February 14 with our 2 flatbed carts full of breakfast bars, peanuts, fish crackers, etc. when a lady stopped and asked what all the food was for. I told her our church runs a program where we deliver bags of food to students at our local schools who are at risk of weekend hunger. She said, “That’s wonderful! Do you accept donations?” I told her, “Absolutely!” She handed me a $20 bill and said, “I love that you are feeding kids.” Her $20 fills 5 snack bags. What a wonderful display of God’s love from a perfect stranger that Valentine’s Day!

LuLuaRoe Fundraiser The LuLaRoe Pop Up Boutique fundraiser was a huge suc-cess! 41 people made purchases that Sunday and raised $870.25 for the Our Kids program. Beyond the profit, the LuLaRoe fund-raiser was a great tool to help spread the word about the Our Kids Weekend Snack Bag Program to the community. Conversations were started with the LuLaRoe shopping and ended with the good cause we were shopping for. Thanks to all who shopped and helped with the fundraiser. Our next LuLaRoe Pop Up Boutique will be held March 26 in the fellowship hall at the church from 10:30 AM—1 PM. Come and check out LuLaRoe as we again raise money for the Our Kids program.

SCRIP Gift Cards SCRIP gift cards are not just for Christmas! What every day purchases can you make using SCRIP cards?
