PASTOR ‘S CORNER

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Happy Christmas – grace and peace to you throughout all 12 days of Christmas, from the 26th through Epiphany on Janu-ary 6th! And Blessings for the New Year! What a wonder-filled Advent season we have had, “Angels Among Us: Do Not Be Afraid.” A big shout-out and thank you to everyone who helped and/or par-ticipated in the many services and events: musicians, singers, readers, deco-rators, media-folk (including 2 movies), food preparers, servers, clean-up crews, greeters, and worshipers…. One and all, messengers of God, sharing the good news of hope, peace, joy, love, and life; of God-with-us “Emmanuel.” Hope you all get a picture with your angel wings! I

can’t wait to see them. During the season after Epiphany (until Lent begins with Ash Wednesday - this year February 14th) our Sunday scrip-tures tell of Jesus’ early ministry, his baptism and the calling of his early disci-ples. We witness the coming or manifes-tation of Light (incarnation of Christ) into the world. As I write on the solstice, the shortest day of the year, I know this Light is a powerful force upon which we can rely. As author Andrew Harvey puts it: “The power of Light does indeed make its way through darkness but Light is not a passive force. It is an active agent of transformation. Light does not do our work for us. Rather the grace that flows through the Light is meant to inspire us to rise up with fortitude, inspiration and creativity to forge new pathways, as the familiar landscape evaporates. (continued from page 1) do, but a reality that we are. We don’t decide to be lov-ing. Love is our True Self. It is where we came from and where we’re going. All spiritual growth is no more than a matter of becoming who we already are.” (Daily meditation, 12/20/17) The month of January will see me at the annual Gather-ing of the Orders (required of clergy in the Annual Con-ference) in the Santa Cruz mountains from the 16th -18th, and at a three-day “Retreat and School of Spiritual Practice” (based in the Celtic Christian tradition) at Bishop’s Ranch near Healdsburg from the 30th – Feb 1st. I look forward to sharing with you what I learn. The new year holds much promise for us at PUMC! I look forward to exploring with you how best we can minister here in Petaluma; walking together in the way Jesus shows us. Yours, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit to con-

tinuously surprise us beyond our wildest imaginings, already bringing about the welcoming, dynamic, joy-ous, generous congregation that is PUMC! NEW VISITORS TO OUR CHURCH Lately we have been blessed to have new visitors to our church. When they join us in the Social Hall, please visit with them and only discuss church business if they ask. Also, please be cognizant that when either the pastor or other church members are in conversation with them that we don’t interrupt with questions re-garding church business. Please save it for a more appropriate time. Thank you.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS

On December 9th, a number of our chancel choir volunteered to be “bell ringers” for the Salvation Ar-my. Stationed at the D St Post Office, our choir gener-ated over $200 that will be used to help members of the Petaluma community. Major Mitham Clement wrote “thank you and members of your choir sincerely for lending a hand”.

GOD’S HOUSE SECURITY

The trustees have been grappling with the problem of doors and windows left unsecured, thus allowing anyone to enter. In the society of today, that is ask-ing for trouble. So, after many months of discussion on the subject and the thought to rekey the exterior doors, the trustees have arrived on a solution to the problem. First the trustees will not rekey the exterior doors to the church, thus saving funds to go to much more needed areas. Second, call on the constituency of the church, both congregations and all members that worship in this beautiful facility to be vigilant in protecting the prop-erty and its furnishings. How we can do that is to lock all doors that we have unlocked. A simple task that I’m sure we all do at our own home. Close and lock all windows that we have opened. Another sim-ple task that I’m sure we all do at our own home. Those two tasks, being so simple, can only be effective if we (ME) do it every time we are in the church. I’m positive that no one wants to be the one that allows damage to occur in the church because we (ME) left the building unsecured. Don’t leave it to others, step up and be proud enough to protect God’s House. Lou Strohmeyer, Co-Chair, Trustees

TREASURER’S MONTHLY REPORT

TRUSTEES REPORT

Trustees have received two different painting estimates for the Social Hall, each with a separate estimate for the ceiling and trusses and I have ordered the replace-ment exit door to the parking lot. There is $1,974.28 (as of December 26th) in the Social Hall Improvement Fund; painting is the easiest first step in this process. The replacement door will arrive soon. It will replace the current water damaged parking lot exit door at the CE wing. Some of the Trustees are not up to speed on varnish finishes, thus we will be looking at possibly applying a polyurethane product instead. We would have to apply the poly product before hanging the door for better results, according to the expert in the paint department. That will certainly add time to complete our project. I will be available to assist with the re-placement, but would encourage a couple of additional strong arms (and backs) to be available as the door will be very heavy (46” x 80” and 1 3/4” thick.) We will plan this very carefully . Richard Hillery Trustees

OUTREACH Westside Interfaith Pantry December 14, 2017

We served 79 families. Families came with children all excited about Christmas coming soon. Because of the many fire victims, the Redwood Food Bank is over worked and has less food on their shelves. Thank heav-ens for COTS that shared some of their breads, desserts and fresh vegetables. We were only able to purchase 60 chickens, so we were a bit short. For those not getting chicken we had canned salmon available, which still provided the protein that we try to offer. There was no discount on the chickens this time so our cost this week was $394.36 for a weight total of 1,362.00 lbs. Thanks to all that contribute to the Pantry. Your mone-tary donations can be placed in the yellow envelopes marked Pantry in the pews. It’s a big help for a great service and we also thank those that help serve each month. Come and join us. Richard and Judy Hillery

The Men’s Club breakfast will be January 9 at the Palms Grill (new location) located at the corner of McDowell Blvd. and E. Washington St.

PLEDGE CARDS

Thank you to all who have turned in their pledge cards for 2018. With all the holiday preparation and cele-bration time has gotten away from all of us. For those of you who have not yet sent in your pledge cards, it would be appreciated if you could send them in or put them in the offering plate as soon as you can so we can finalize our budget for the upcoming year. Thank you again, Adela Hennings Financial Secretary

` MUSIC MINISTRY

NEWSNOTES

Isn’t it wonderful that we can sing songs that touch our hearts like a prayer? I was preparing for the Peta-luman and came across this song “Let This Song be My Prayer” by Jane Seeber. I didn’t take the time to run to the piano, I just read the words. These words apply to all hymns and songs we sing in worship that can become our prayer.

“Let this song be my prayer, for I cannot find the words that fill my heart..

Let this melody rise up to God and speak my part.

Let tis song be my prayer.

There are some whose sweet words flow so gently from the tongue, but the feeling within the heart is small.

There are those of us who feel so keenly deep within, But the words just never seem to come at all.

So we sing to our God, though the voice and song may both be far from grand. Still we sing and we know God will understand. O Lord, let the song be my prayer.”

CHANCEL CHOIR—Now is the time to give our choir a try. We really need tenors, but a bass or two wouldn’t hurt!

All people are invited and welcome to come Jan. 3 or any Wednesday after at 7 p.m. in the choir room.

Kids Alive will begin again January 11 from 4-5 p.m. All kids in the community of Petaluma are invited to come and sing, learn music, and have fun.

The Resurrection Bells group still needs people to join. We will teach you what to do., just be able to keep a straight rhythm. It is fund and the group is great! Come give it a try! Talk to Diane about com-ing—707-484-8548 or [email protected]
