2017 Season Outlook

The third season in the Atlantic Coast Conference proved to be the finest

for the University of Louisville, display-ing marked improvement by posting a 7-1 record in one of the nation’s toughest con-ferences.

Despite the impressive league mark and a nine-win season, the Cardinals closed the season with three-straight losses in a season that started with high hopes. Despite the frustrating end, the Cardinals had plenty to be proud of with big wins to start the year over Charlotte and Syracuse, a monstrous victory over then No. 2-ranked Florida State and the school’s first-ever Heisman Trophy.

However, 2017 is a new season, and the Cardinals are ready to turn the page.

Louisville has the pieces in place to start a new run, featuring Lamar Jackson, the win-ner of the Heisman Trophy and numerous other player of the year accolades.

With one of the most dynamic play mak-ers back on offense that finished third in the nation in scoring and sixth in total offense — the Cardinals are poised for another suc-cessful run.

Defensively, nine starters return from a top 20 defense to give the Cardinals an op-portunity to improve on last season’s 9-4 overall record.

Despite losing 10 overall starters, there is reason for optimism for the Cardinals head-ing into the 2017 season.

For starters, the Cardinals have won eight or more games for five-straight seasons, and Louisville has averaged 9.6 wins during head coach Bobby Petrino’s tenure.

In Jackson, the Cardinals have the top re-turning player in the country after account-ing for 51 touchdowns and a school-best 5,114 yards of total offense, and have an abundance of firepower returning from an of-fense that averaged 42.5 points per game and 532.7 yards of total offense. Louisville scored 553 points — tallying seven games of 40 or more points and three contests of over 60.

The top three receivers have departed and the team’s second-leading rusher, but Jeremy Smith, who was second with eight rushing touchdowns, is the top returning running back and will team with Reggie Bonnafon in the backfield. Jaylen Smith, Tra-veon Samuel and Seth Dawkins give Jackson plenty of targets at the wide receiver spot. Offensive tackles Geron Christian and Lu-kayus McNeil are the two offensive linemen returning this spring.

Defensively, the Cardinals return nine start-ers, including four starters in the secondary, including cornerback Jaire Alexander, who

led the team with five interceptions and safety Chucky Williams —a two-year starter at safety.

n The OFFENSE

Quarterback Lamar Jackson, running back Jeremy Smith, and wide receiver Jaylen Smith and Reggie Bonnafon form a lethal combination in the ACC going into 2017, but the Cardinals have several capable per-formers, most notably at wide receiver. At a program that has a propensity for putting up huge offensive statistics, this year’s Car-dinals’ offense has a chance to duplicate the big numbers from a year ago.

n QuarterbackIt usually starts at the quarterback posi-

tion and the Cardinals have a good one in Lamar Jackson — the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner and the winner of a number of player of the year awards. In his first full season as the starter, Jackson re-wrote the school and ACC record book. The 6-foot-3 rising junior rushed for a school-best 1,571 yards and 21 scores, while setting the league mark for rushing yards by a quarterback. Jackson de-veloped as a passer, throwing for 3,543 yards and 30 touchdowns, while tossing only nine interceptions in 409 pass attempts.

The Pompano Beach, Fla., native ac-counted for 51 touchdowns, while setting a school record for total offense with 5,114 yards. Jackson totaled eight 100-yard rush-ing games, while setting an ACC record with 610 yards of total offense in a 62-28 win over Syracuse in the season’s second week.

In the season-opening win over Char-lotte, Jackson equaled an ACC record and broke a school mark with eight touchdowns in a 70-14 win over Charlotte. He also to-taled seven touchdowns in wins at Marshall and Boston College.

In only two seasons, Jackson, who has accounted for 74 career touchdowns, has rushed for 2,531 yards and 32 touchdowns, while passing for 5,383 yards and 42 touch-downs in 25 career contests,

Behind Jackson are two players who have yet to take a snap at Louisville: redshirt fresh-man Puma Pass and freshman Malik Cun-ningham.

Pass used his true freshman year to get acquainted with the offense and is ready to play if needed. A native of Columbus, Ga., Pass was a former U.S. Army All-American, and showed this spring that he has the ability to step in if needed.

lection, Cunningham finished his career with 8,470 all-purpose yards, while passing for 6,276 yards and 71 touchdownsduring his scholastic career.

n Wide ReceiverThe loss of production at wide receiver

will be tough to replace, but the Cardinals have potential to be just as good as a year ago. Graduated are James Quick and Jamari Staples — two of the top players in terms of production. However, the Cardinals have experience back and some promising young talent to give the offense plenty of fire power.

Sophomore Jaylen Smith, who missed spring practice with an injury, is the top re-turning receiver with 27 receptions for 599 yards and six scores. A Pascagoula, Miss., na-tive, Smith finished third in the nation with an average of 22.2 yards a reception.

Competing with Smith is a talented red-shirt freshman in Dez Fitzpatrick. The Farm-ington Hills, Mich., product caught nine passes for 176 yards and two scores in the Red-White game in April, elevating him in the rotation. Senior Javonte Bagley is expe-rienced and could be ready to be a frequent contributor in the lineup. In three seasons, Bagley owns 12 receptions for 127 yards, av-eraging 10.6 yards a reception.

Rising sophomore Seth Dawkins expects to see a larger role in the offense this year after catching 11 passes for 191 yards and one score. A big, physical receiver, Dawkins averaged 17.4 yards a reception, while total-ing a career-best three catches for 49 yards in a loss to Houston.

Devante Peete, who was tabbed a spe-cial teams captain last season, will attempt to crack the rotation on a more consistent basis, and brings 15 career receptions for 226 yards to the receiver group.

Talented freshman Corey Reed, a four-star recruit. will get an opportunity to crack a talented lineup.

Rising junior Traveon Samuel hopes to build off his productive campaign — equal-ing a career-high with 18 receptions for 230 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore Emonee Spence — who missed 2016 with an injury — will look for an expanded role within the offense this year, while redshirt Keion Wakefield and incom-ing freshman Josh Johnson look to become contributors in the offense this year.

n Tight EnDOne of the biggest holes to fill will be at

tight end with the graduation of Cole Hiku-

tini and Keith Towbridge. Hikutini led the Cardinals with 50 receptions 668 yards and a team-best eight touchdown receptions.

Rising senior Charles Standberry has the most experience, but that hasn’t translated into much production with 17 receptions for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Junior Micky Crum had 14 receptions for 163 yards and three scores in 2015, but his production dipped to one catch for seven yards last year.

Texas A&M transfer Jordan Davis is eli-gible this season after sitting out last year, but his experience will a plus at this position.

n Offensive LineConsistently playing with the same offen-

sive line last season, the Cardinals will have to find a new combination upfront after losing three starters. Junior tackles Geron Christian and Lukayus McNeil are the veterans return-ing, combining for 47 starts in their first two seasons. Christian, a two-time all-conference performer, has started every game over the last two campaigns, while McNeil has 21 games of starting experience. The two return-ers give the Cardinals bulk and experience, but need to fill the other holes with a number of young, but talented performers.

Competing for time behind Christian,

incoming freshman Mekhi Becton is a mam-moth and athletic tackle, who will add much-needed depth to the postion, while freshman Toryque Bateman is another big, athletic player, which bodes well for the future.

Early enrolle Cole Bentley got his feet wet this spring, and his ability to compete el-evated him up the depth chart at guard. With his physicality and tenacity, Bentley will be someone who will make the line better this fall. Junior Linwood Foy saw action in 2016 before shoulder surgery sidelined him for most of the season. Highly touted freshman Caleb Chandler is another talented freshman who gives the Cardinals optimism for the fu-ture upfront.

Veteran Kenny Thomas has filled in over the first two seasons at a number of positions, but looks to settle in at guard, while junior-college transfer Ronald Rudd will push for playing time with his immense talent.

McNeil has solidified himself at one of the tackle spots, starting 12 games a year ago. Senior Toriano Roundtree and junior Danny Burns are two enormous bodies, who will add depth at tackle.

After the loss of Tobijah Hughley, who was a mainstay at center the last couple of seasons, the position is up for grab this fall. Redshirt

freshman Robbie Bell and sophomore Nate Scheler will have a good competition this fall to see who will earn the starting role.

n Running BackThe Cardinals lost one of their most pro-

ductive runners in Brandon Radcliff and an injury this spring to Dae Williams forced Petrino to shuffle the deck — moving senior Reggie Bonnafon to running back. A verstaile athlete, Bonnafon transitioned to the back-field this spring. He displayed an ability to run between the tackles, but flourished when he was able to get outside. A native of Louis-ville, Ky., Bonnafon has rushed for 346 yards during his career, but this will be his first time as a full-time back.

Senior Jeremy Smith has rushed for 652 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first two sea-sons, including a career-best eight scores in 2016. He rushed for a career-best 97 yards and an 80-yard touchdown run versus Duke last season.

Senior Malik Williams, who got his feet wet last season, is coming off an injury and will get an expanded role this season. Trey Smith saw action last season, and continues to improve.

Redshirt freshmen Tobias Little and

Vince Lococo have both been moved to of-fense to compete at fullback. Little displayed an ability to catch the football out of the backfield and be a solid blocker, while Lo-coco benefits from being one of the tough-est players on the team. Incoming freshman Colin Wilson has a ton of natural ability and should get an opportunity to showcase his potential this fall.

n The DefenseThe defense has been one of the best in the

country the last three seasons, but will be un-der new direction in Peter Sirmon, who comes to Louisville after a stint at Mississippi State.

The depth on the defensive line will be something to watch, but senior Drew Bailey will be someone who is expected to build upon a solid 2016 season, where he record-ed 58 tackles. The secondary returns four starters, including All-American candidate Jaire Alexander, who led the team with five interceptions.

n Defensive LineThere hasn’t been a lot of questions with

the defense over the last few seasons, but heading into fall camp, the depth on the de-fensive line is something to watch this season.

Headlining this unit is Bailey — the top tackler on the defensive line with 58 tackles and 9.0 tackles for loss. He posted a career-high 11 tackles in a win over Duke — the most tackles by a defensive lineman since the 2005 season. Seniors De’Asian Rich-ardson and Chris Wiliams are the only two defensive linemen with significant playing time under their belts. Richardson recorded 17 tackles, while Williams was credited with 29 stops. Williams, who transferred from a junior college, had six tackles in his first game last season versus Charlotte. Sopho-more G.G. Robinson saw limited action last year, but will be counted on more in 2017, while junior Henry Famurewa will move in-side to play the nose tackle. Redshirt fresh-men Caleb Tillman and Derek Dorsey will have to step in to expanded roles this fall.

Senior Trevon Young will play at one of the defensive end positions in Sirmon’s de-fensive structure. Suffering a severe injury in the 2015 Music City Bowl, the native of Des Moines, Iowa, missed all of 2016 because of the magnitude of the rehabilitation. An all-ACC selection in 2015, Young recorded 8.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss — emerging as one of the league’s most dominating pass rushers. Sophomore Jonathan Greenard reg-istered 2.5 sacks in his first year of action. In his first action last season, Greenard posted 22 tackles and 7.0 tackles for loss — getting to the quarterback for 2.5 sacks, including 1.5 in a big win over No. 2 Florida State.

n LinebackersKeith Kelsey, who led the Cards in tackles

the last two years, is gone to graduation — opening the door for senior Stacy Thomas to pace this unit. In his first year a starter last season, Thomas was second on the team with a career-best 85 tackles, including 11 in the final loss of the season to LSU. Stepping into a larger role last season, junior Isaac Stewart will be a key component at linebacker after recording a career-best 24 tackles in 2016. Sophomore Amonte Caban showed prom-ise last year, while incoming freshman Kam Jones enrolled early and will get an opportu-nity to compete this fall.

Senior James Hearns will play as one of the outside linebackers and edge rushers, and is one of the best in the country. The Tal-lahassee, Fla., native, recorded 8.0 sacks last season and forced five fumbles. Hearns re-corded a career-best 43 tackles in 12 games as a starter. Redshirt freshman Tabarious Peterson is an athletic, big body who had a great spring and will be counted on to add

depth behind Hearns. while junior Gary Mc-Crae and Henry Famurewa will see more ac-tion this year. Inside linebackers Isaac Stew-art and Moving to the weakside linebacker position, junior London Iakopo will shift over from the secondary. Suffering a season-ending knee injury just four games into the season, Iakopo was limited this spring, but has worked hard to be in the mix heading into fall camp.

Sophomore Malik Staples was one of only three true freshman to play last season, albeit in a limited role. The Suwanee, Ga., na-tive played in 12 games on special teams, but saw more action in the spring. Sophomore Damien Smith played a critical role on spe-cial teams and will add depth at linebacker.

n SecondaryThe secondary returns four starters on

the back end with junior cornerback Jaire Alexander leading this group. Starting all 13 games, Alexander recorded 39 tackles and a career-high five interceptions. The native of Charlotte, N.C., is one of the most dynamic players in the country and has evolved into one of the top cover corners. He totaled a pair of interceptions in road games at nation-ally ranked Clemson and at Virginia. Senior Ronald Walker will battle with Alexander af-ter spending his first year with the Cardinals in 2016. Walker totaled 23 tackles last year, including a career-high eight versus LSU in his first collegiate start. Incoming freshman Anthony Johnsoon will come in and add depth in the secondary.

Senior Trumaine Washington has been a two-year starter and is coming off a year where he posted 30 tackles and two inter-ceptions. Sophomore Cornelius Sturghill sat out last year with a foot injury, but bounced back with a good spring. One of the fastest players on the team, the Memphis, Tenn., na-tive, displayed an ability to cover the deep pass and make plays on the football. Fresh-man Russ Yeast, one of the best athletes in the signing class, will be someone to look for in the fall.

One of the leaders on defense the last couple of years, Chucky Williams is coming off a year where he registered a career-best 74 tackles and three interceptions. He forced two fumbles at Clemson and one intercep-tion, while also totaling a season-high nine tackles versus Wake Forest. Junior Dee Smith was catapulted into the starting lineup last season and responded with 42 tackles.

Senior Zykiesis Cannon in his first year as a starter a year ago recorded a career-high 64

tackles and his first career interception. He had eight games with five or more tackles, including eight versus Syracuse and Marshall.

Freshman Lyn Strange enrolled in Janu-ary and was able to get a leg up on the com-petition by working out this spring. TreSean Smith, another rookie, is a highly touted player and will get an opportunity to earn his way to on to the field.

Junior Khane Pass will work at the star position in the secondary after he was cred-ited with 19 tackles in his first season playing at safety. He made his first start versus LSU in the Citrus Bowl and recorded five tackles. Promising freshman C.J. Avery, the No. 6 prospect in Mississippi, proved that he be-longed on the field with a good spring, while sophomore Lamarques Thomas proved to be more comfortable in the secondary.

n SpecialistsHeading into last season there was a

concern with the inexperience on special teams. However, the emergence of punter placekicker Blanton Creque and punter Ma-son King put the anxiety to rest.

In his first collegiate season, Creque was relatively automatic, connecting on 16-of-19 field goals, including a career-best four in a win over NC State. Despite a disappoint-

ing loss in the Citrus Bowl to LSU, Creque booted a career-long 47-yard kick in the 29-9 loss. Sophomore Evan O’Hara also saw action last season and proved to be capable.

King also stood out a year ago, setting a school record for the best punting average in a year, averaging 43.9 yards per punt. He closed the year in tremendous fashion, punting the ball a career-high eight times for a 50.5 yard average — the second time he averaged over 50.0 yards per punt in a game.

Long snapper Colin Holba was a seventh-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving a major void. However, that was filled by the signing of Mitch Hall, widely consid-ered the best long snappers in the country.

Alexander is one of the most electric punt returners in the country, averaging 10.5 yards a return — posting two 60-yard returns in the win over Florida State. He returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown and added a 61-yard return in the 63-20 win over the Seminoles. Bonnafon, Fitzpatrick and Samu-el are also returners to watch.

Dawkins and Malik Williams were the two main kick returners last season — each returning 14 kicks. Williams averaged 22.5 yards a return, with Dawkins showing prom-ise at 21.9 yards an attempt.
