    31st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 30, 2011GOD IS IN CHARGE

"Who do you think you are?!" to-day's readings demand. We arebrought up short, put in our place, given a dose of reality. Who is God?Who is in charge? Who is the great-est?

We begin with a passage from theprophet Malachi, one of the latestprophets, who wrote after the Jewsreturned from Babylon. Calling thepeople to task in God's name, hecondemns the divisions and false

teachings that have arisen, remindingthem that all were created by the oneGod. Paul tells the Thessalonians thesame thing, but in a positive way--praising them for remembering that itis God who is at work within them.

Finally, the Gospel presents Jesusspeaking out against hypocrisy andvainglory. "You have but oneteacher . . . you have but one Fa-ther" (Matthew 23:8, 9). We arefirmly put in our place. God is incharge.

"No tienen ms

que un Maestro. . . el padre de uste-des es slo el Padre celestial" (Mateo23:8, 9). Con firmeza nos pone ennuestro lugar. Dios est a cargo.

STEWARDSHIP:BAMBOOA beautiful bambooonce grew in a gar-den. One day theMaster of the garden

came by. "Bamboo, Ineed you." "Master, I am ready. Useme as you will." "Bamboo," said theMaster gravely, "I must cut youdown." Bamboo trembled and benthis head. "Do your will and cut.""Beloved Bamboo, I must take yourleaves and branches, too." "Master, spare me!" "Bamboo, I must cut youin two and take out your heart."Bamboo bowed low. "Master . . . doyour will." The Master of the Gardencut and, lifting Bamboo gently, car-ried him to a spring among his dry

fields. He carefully laid one end ofBamboo in the spring and the otherinto a water channel. The sparklingwaters raced down Bamboo's tornbody into the fields. Rice wasplanted, shoots grew, and harvestcame. In his growth, Bamboo was lifeabundant, but in his brokenness, hechanneled abundant life into his Mas-ter's world.

    During this session well concentrate

in more depth on the EucharisticPrayer, the center and summit ofthe entire Mass. The dialogue thatbegins the prayer has two changes;well look at the reasons for them.Participants may be unaware of themany prefaces used during differentseasons or for special feasts. Welllook at these prefaces and at themesthat recur in the Mass, such as for-giveness, praise, and thanksgiving. The Holy, Holy, Holy is based onscripture; well trace its origins inIsaiah and Matthew. Then the group

will compare personal experiences oftranscendence with this communalexpression. The peoples great

Amen calls for deliberate atten-tion: What does it mean? How do weaffirm our faith with our Amen? How can we be more conscious ofthis great mystery we enter into? Forthese and any other unansweredquestions about the Eucharist, cometo Session Sixand all the sessions!

    4:30 pm-6:00 pm (Bilingual)7:00 pm-8:30 pm (Bilingual)

Sunday, November 6(same schedule as October 30)

At this session, we will explore sev-

eral meal narratives from scriptureand then discuss a few changes tothe Institution narrative. Becauseit is so important, well want to un-derstand the text changes. Time istelescoped as we hear the wordsJesus spoke over bread and wine athis last meal with his friends. Jesusparticipated in the Passover ritualmany times, but made a significantchange at the Last Supper. He gaveus his Body and Blood, the ultimatesacrifice and covenant between Godand humanity.

Well also highlight the scripturalroots of the words ofconsecration.Even though the words are different, the cornerstone of our faith remainsfirm: bread and wine are trans-formed into Christs Body and Blood. Our acclamation, sung in differentwords, still voices our affirmation. Now is a wonderful opportunity toexplore this profound mystery cen-tral to our faith. Let us take a freshlook and renew its meaning.Come and join us!

This is a MUST for lectors, extraordinary ministers ofholy communion, choir mem-bers, ushers, parish groups, and Confirmation SPONSORS.

family, but they have lots of com-pany. In the Book of Revelation(7:9) St. John tells us that there is agreat multitude of saints in heavenand that they come from every na-tion and race on earth. This day, aholy day of obligation, was oncecalled the feast of All Hallows (orholy ones). The night before was theEve of All Hallows, Halloween.

ALL SOULS DAYNovember 2, WednesdayOn this day we remember to pray forthe saints in waiting. These arepeople who must undergo some pu-rification before they are ready toshare in the presence of God. In 2

Maccabees 12:44-45, we learn thatwe can get them to heaven quickerby praying for them. Some soulshave no one to pray for them. Thatswhy some people make it a point topray for these abandoned souls.Others like to pray for the soul clos-est to achieving heaven. They enjoyfeeling that they have helped to givesomeone the greatest gift possible:the full presence of God.
