How to Teach Thinking Skills Within in the Common Core Bellanca, Fogarty and Pete

Unpack the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in a balanced way, using rich content and rigorous thinking processes. The CCSS thread the skills of literacy and reading, writing, speaking and listening through narrative and informative text. The key to implementing the CCSS with relevancy, is to address them, with explicit teaching of the higher order thinking skills that are embedded in rich subject matter content. (ELA, Science, Math, Social Studies, History, Technology). The focus is on the high frequency “thinking skills that students need to master. These skills teach kids how to process, analyze, evaluate, produce and present with rich content and relevant thinking. Here is the Syllabus of Seven Thinking Skill Sets and 21 Explicit Thinking Skills that thread across all content areas for student proficiency.

The Syllabus of Seven Thinking Skill Sets:

1 - Critical Thinking - Analyze, Evaluate, Problem Solve 2 - Creative Thinking - Generate, Associate, Hypothesize 3 - Complex Thinking - Clarify, Interpret, Determine 4 - Comprehensive Thinking - Understand, Infer, Compare 5 - Collaborative Thinking - Explain, Develop, Decide 6 - Communicative Thinking - Reason, Connect, Represent 7 - Cognitive Transfer of Thinking - Synthesize, Generalize, Apply

Five Hallmarks of Common Core Standards

#1 Common Core Balances Narrative Texts and Informational Texts Instead of the imbalance of traditional curriculum, with 90% narrative text in elementary school and 90% informational text in high school, Common Core vigorously includes both kinds of text exemplars across all the grades.

#2 Common Core Balances Literacy Across All Disciplines By threading literacy across all disciplines, Common Core frames the responsibility for the explicit literacy skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening across all core content area. (ELA, SS, history, science, technology).

#3 Common Core Balances Core Standards Across the States Following the lead of countries throughout the world, Common Core Standards provide a consistency of rigorous standards across the United States, creating high-quality uniformity in educational expectations.

#4 Common Core Balances Rich Content With Relevant Processes In a world inundated with information, content is not the only focus for classroom instruction. Common Core Standards, sets the bar for students to think skillfully about that content, as 21st Century problem solvers.

#5 Common Core Balances Academics and Real World Applications Above all else, Common Core Standards focuses on the future, and states explicitly that the goal is college and career–readiness for all students to succeed at any path they may choose to take upon graduating High School.

Three Key Elements to Working with CCSS-ELA (CCSS Documents and Appendix B)

The Standards - What we want students to know and be able to do The Exemplars - Sample narrative and informational text resources The Performance Tasks - Complex, student performance examples

ELA Anchor Standards Reading

• Key Ideas and Details • Craft and Structure • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas • Range of Reading and Level of Text

Writing • Text Types and Purposes* • Production and Distribution of Writing • Research to Build and Present Knowledge • Range of Writing

Speaking and Listening • Comprehension and Collaboration • Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

Language • Conventions of Standard English • Knowledge of Language • Vocabulary Acquisition and Use

Standards for Mathematical Practice

1 - Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

2 - Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

3 - Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

4 - Model with mathematics.

5 - Use appropriate tools strategically.

6 - Attend to precision.

7 - Look for and make use of structure.
