WHY YOU SHOULD GO:
Located on the northern shore of Long Island, the North Fork boasts about 60 wineries, rolling farmland, miles of beaches, and plenty of things to do. Besides its allure as a morelaidback version of the Hamptons, the area has developed a reputation for awardwinning wines like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc , eventhough its first vineyard dates back to 1973—an infant in winemaking years. Come in thesummer when wineries offer everything from live music to yoga among the grapes; whileyou’re there, take advantage of the season by poking around the picturesque town ofGreenport (a former fishing village), kayaking calm waters, or visiting a lavender farm. You’ll soon see why a long weekend isn’t long enough to explore everything the NorthFork has to offer.
WHERE TO STAY:
Opt for the Harborfront Inn in Greenport if you want the ability to walk to restaurantsand shops. The luxurious condos, situated on Greenport Harbor, feature Frette linens, aheated inground pool, and private balconies —perfect for enjoying a glass of wine whilewatching the sunset over Peconic Bay. The landmark JeDediah Hawkins Inn in Jamesportoffers a romantic bed and breakfast getaway, complete with an acclaimed onsiterestaurant and close proximity to vineyards.
WHERE TO EAT:
Love Lane Kitchen in the cute village of Mattituck is a local favorite for brunch sincebreakfast items are served until 2pm. (Nonbreakfast items, like a lobster roll, or thechicken, mango and avocado salad, are good too.) The acclaimed North Fork Table andInn is a must for foodies, with a threecourse dinner that’s not to be missed. Raw yellowfin tuna, black trufflecrusted Atlantic cod, and coconut tapioca are among the standoutson the new American menu. If you can’t score reservations, taken up to a month inadvance, try one of its two lunch trucks (one onsite, the other travels). American Beech inGreenport is another favorite, offering sophisticated, rustic interiors, and a welcomingoutdoor patio. Go for the honey spiced buttermilkfried chicken.

WHERE TO DRINK:
There are a ton of excellent vineyards for wine tasting, and both red and whites excel inthe region. Wineries are spread from Jamesport to Greenport, and range from familyowned to corporate. Mattebella Vineyards and the Old Field Vineyards (complete withchickens!) in Southold are among the more intimate spaces, and on a slow day, a visit canfeel like a private tasting on a country farm. Raphael Winery in Peconic and SparklingPointe in Southold fall into the corporate category, yet what they lack in personalattention they more than compensate for with excellent wines in special occasion settings.
Other noteworthy wineries include Kontokosta Winery, set on a 62acre waterfront farm;Croteaux Vineyards, which specializes in rosé wines, and Shinn Estate Vineyards andFarmhouse, which offers acclaimed wines in its tasting room (try the 2013 Estate Merlot).Or sign up for adult wine camp to really delve deep into the oenophile world. Nonwineenthusiasts will appreciate the craft beer selection at the popular Greenport HarborBrewing Co—plus, now there's a second location in Peconic.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
Since there is no trendy scene (phew), enjoy the great outdoors: Rent kayaks from Eagle’s
Neck Paddling Company or bikes from Dan’s Bike Rental; explore lavender fields at
Lavender by the Bay; and pick up fresh berries and produce from an abundance of
farmstands. At night, enjoy live music in the vineyards, or grab a bottle of vino and watch
the sunset at Orient Beach State Park, a National Natural Landmark with pristine beaches
and hiking trails, and start planning your next trip back.
