The fascinating convention drawings are the work of architect Cy Wagner (self portrait ahove). We asked Cy to tell us about himself and drawing. Here's what he says:

"The Usual Stuff:

Graduate, University of Texas, 1952, Bachelor of Architecture. (This only happened after attending Oklahoma A & M and one year at SMU-200 hours of college work and only one degree-pretty sad).

Married of course, loL« of kids, 2 boys- 2 girls and one Mexican maid wife with an IQ o( 160+ who reads books and plays duplicate bridge.

Worked for Bartlett Cocke-3 years and 3 months learning how to put buildings together changing the out..«ide tree lights and running the blue line machinl'. Al-,o did thl' annual Xmas Cards for the Office.

Opened my own office with one job (hasn' t been built yet) in 1955.

Became as:-;ociated with Peter Callins in 1957 (he had two jobs) and we've heen together ever since. Decided to make it an official partnership in 1961 to simplify bookkeeping and quit bumping into each other around the office (better organization)."

Cy's !-mall office does all sorts of projecL~ including urhan design, but school and church work account for some 60% of their work. Wagner and Callins recently moved into new officrs: "now we have enough room for clients to sit down. All walls in the office are tackboard - one reason is we show clients all the damn work WI.' do to solve the problem and the steps leading up to the solution. "

About drawing, Cy says, "If you can draw the human figure then trees, furniture, and huildings become easy. A few months on newsprint with charcoal or contc erayon i-itting on a stool and using an easel really 'loosens' up the techniqul'. I\ e ;.pent a lot of time eopying !-ay Michaelangelo's figure !.tudiesLeonardo's headi- George Price's cartoon fal·es and detail Willard Mullin's sport s cartoon action and so on. I gut':\S all this adds up to the old cliche learn by doing. Drawings with the content of the drawing making the penci l go are alway:- helter than trying to "lahor out" a ;.kl'lch; the inner thrill that comes when the pen pencil or brush eomes into contact with a surface that accepts the medium delightfully; con-,tanl experiments of new mediums on old su rfaces; looking al Old Master ~krtchcs and reading 'Peanuts' in the Cunny papers. Last· ly, finally finding this pen point - its an Esterbrook 9:H4-B all architects should have one (a lot do); it make!-. fat line", !'kinn y lines or a combination of both in one st roke."

QUALITY CONTROL

OCTOIEII 1963

IN CONCRETE MASONRY

Th e Texas Concrete Masonry Association has had in op<'ration ,-ince July 23, 1960, a Quality Control Program for concre te masonry units. The Texa s Association has worked closely with the Concrete Masonry Association of California, and other roncrete masonry associations throu ghou t the United States in developing Quality Control Pro g ram s that would he heneficial to the entire conc rete block industry.

The obj<'Ct of the program is to enro urage the specifira tion of conc rete ma,;onry in all types of constr uction by assuring the architect, <'ngin('er, and specifica tion s writer that he is specifying the use of a quality product. A product that ha-. het>n lt'Slt'd hy reputabl e lt'Stin g lab oratoriei-, whose test reportc; are on file in the Association office in Austin, Texa-., open to their inspection at any time .

The reputabl e testing laboratories of the State of Texas have heen authorized by all of the membt>rs of the Association, who meet th<' minimum requirements of the American Society for Testing Material.,, and who are participating in the Quality Cont rol Program, to go into their yards and choose blocks at random to he tested.

The test report s are duplicated, with one set being sent to the Association office for recording, and wha tever other copies ar<' needed by the manufacturer sent lo him . Thi s syste m of lestin~ and report ing eliminal<'S the tend ency of PRE -SELECTING blocks for test at some future date, unde r favo rable and cont rolled con dition s. All producer-. are tr ea ted fairly and equally on this basis.

Plants producing 200,000 equival en ts or more a year are requir ed to suhmit te~t reporti- e\ery thirty day-., and thoi-e producing less than 200,000 uniti- mui-t submit a test after every 50.000 unit s of production.

Th e requi rement of test ing each thirty days also meets the requirement of the Stalt' Insuran ce Board for the use of the Concrete Masonry Manufa ctur ers' C<'rt ificate for HTB Insurance ratin g, with a resultant suhc;tantia l saving on insu rance cosL-..

tion: C 426-61T Method of Test for Drying Shrinkage of Concrete Block ic; uc;ed as a routine standardized method for determining the linear shrinkage of concrete block, brick. or other concrete productc:.

Drying Shrinkage is defined as the change in linear dimen<:ion of the te<;t c:pecimen. due to drying from a saturated condition to a conc:tant weight and length under specified conditions.

The test" will be run in c:trict accordance with the above mentioned teo;ting c:pecifications.

PROCEDURE (a) Immel"'e specimens for the drying shrinkage de

termination in water at 73.4° ± 2° F. for 48 hours. (h) Obtain the initial-length reading on the test speci

men. The initial reading of specimen length, at saturation, c;hall he taken with the unit positioned in the water tank, so that itc; gage line i,; ahout ¼ inch above the water surface to avoid error due to cooling by evaporation. Length readings of test specimens shall he accompanied hy length readings of the standard reference har.

(d Ohtain thl' "aluratecl <-urface-dry \\ei1:d1t of the te,-t '-peciml'n. A "aturatl'd '-urface-drr condition c:hall be obtained hy draining the te,t for one minute over a 1/a inch or larger c:creen and remo, ing vic:ible surface water with a damp cloth.

( d) Store tl''-l specimen<. for drying in an air-tight, insulated oven, capable of maintaining a conc:tant temperature al 122° + 2° F. with moderate circulation of air within the oven, O\'er and around all Lest c;pecimens and the drying agent. a meanc: of drying c:pecimens to a condition of equilibrium with a relative humidity of 17 ± 2 percent. Calcium chloride, if u$t'd for this purJ>O"C, shall hl' in flake form. To inc;urc uniform drying, the indi, ·idual c;pedmens shall he shifted daily to different position<. in the drying oven.

( e) At the end of five days of drying, remove shrinkage c;pecimens from the drying oven and cool to 73.4 ° ± 2° F. Following cooling, ohtain c;pecimen-length reading and weight. and length reading of c:tandard reference har.

(f) Return te,t c;pecimens to thf' drying oven for the sf'Cond period of drying. The duration of the i-econd and ,ult,i•qm•nt clryin~ p<'riocl"' ,hall he 21 hour-. Followin~ the ,f."C'ond period of drying, repeat cooling. length readings. and weight determinations as aho, ·e.

(g) Continue the 21 hour period" of drying in the drying o,en, followed hr cooling and length and weight mea-,uremrnt'-, until an equilibrium condition of the "hrinkage ,pecimen" ha" heen reacll('d, where equilibrium is conc;idered to he the prevailing condition when the avt'rage lmgth change of the specimen" is .002 per cent. or ll's'-. in 48 hours of drying and the average weight lo-;" in 21 hourc: of drying ic. IC':"s than 0.2 per <'ent of the last pre,iou-..ly determined weight.

CALCt:LATIO\7S ( 1) Calculate the drying c:hrinkage ac. a percentage of

the length to thf" neare!\t one thousandtl1. (2) ;'\1ake all adjuc.tml'nls n<'cec:~ary to correct length

readings to '-tandard temperature. (3) Give the c.hrinkage for each unit and the average

for all units combined. No manufacturer of concrete maronry units may now

h<'Coml' a member of the Texa~ Concrete Mac:onry A,;.sociation until and unlec;s the products manufactured have heen tee.led in !ttrict accordance with A.S.T.M. Specifications and meet all other requirements of The Texas Concrete Mac.onry A,;sociation.

Office and laboratory bu1ld1ng of Geotron1cs Laboratories, Inc., of Dallas, Texas. Architect: Printz and Brook•. Dallas Armco Butld1ng Dealer : R. M . Tacker Co. Inc., Dallas .

ARMCO STEEL BUILDING IN DALLAS IS STYLISH AND FUNCTIONAL

The Dallas architectu ral firm of Printz and Brooks specified an Armco LS-1 (low-slope) Building not only to get the flat roof desired, but also because it made possible an attractive exposed structural system. Other reasons were durability of the ALUMINIZED STEEL (aluminum-coated) roof and overall economy.

Armco Steel Buildings offer important choices: four framing systems; five roof slopes; two types of roofing; three different wall finishes; and a selection of six factory-applied colors. They provide the comfort and efficiency of custom construction, but with economy made possible by precision mass production.

Write for the new Armco Building catalog that contains size, specificati on and technical data. Metal Products Division, Armco Steel Corporation, P. 0 . Box 1699, Houston, Texas. Offices also in Austin and Dallas.

FACING TOMORROW'S

CHALLENGE WITH YESTERDAY'S

EXPERIENCE

Yesterday: The all-welded steel Dallas Power & Light Co. building erected in 1930 (inset) was the nation's tallestand it was fabricated by Mosher. Today: Houston's all-welded steel framed Tennessee Building at 480 ft. 2" high, weighing 17,700 tons was the country's tallest at its completion-also a Mosher project. Tomorrow, Mosher will face "new challenges" with "yesterday's experience."

Your buyer can actually save thousands of dollars over the years with gas air conditioning . . . a fact proved in installations throughout Texas. The reason? Simplicity. A silent gas flame is the heart of the system. There are no complicated parts to wear and need repair in a gas cooling system. And of course it operates on low-cost natural gas. So build year round gas air conditioning into your next project. Systems are available for the small home, large factory or high-rise office building. Get full details from the air conditioning or builder department of your local utility .

ELEGANCE OF THE OLD MASTERS

More and more young aggressive architects and designers are specifying this new premium quality stone; with the elegance of the old masters.

Each stone is classically marked with an irregular , rock like surface, making hundreds of imaginative pattern possibilities. It not only give s beauty, quality and dimension to your walls, but provides fire safety , high self-insulation and sound absorption as well.

This exciting new stone meets specifications ASTM C62-Grade SW , but if it's proven performance you want, check the Great Wall of China, which was built of Silica-Lime brick over 22 centuries ago.

Color -Crest Stone, made of the same products of Silica flour and limestone, and having the added advantage of Automated-Autoclaving at Crowe Gulde, far exceeds existing standards.

With its beautiful weathered appearance, it become s a natural building material for house, church and school.
