That’s what we’re going to do this month. Our Sunday sermon series, 500 Years of Reformation, will take a close look at the heart of Luther’s biblical rediscovery, the “four solas:” sola scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide, and solus Christus. Our faith is grounded on the Word alone. We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, for the sake of Christ alone – and the Reformation isn’t over yet. We are semper reformanda, always in need of reformation. These five weeks of October, we will lift the Lutheran banner high. It ends with a high note on October 29th, when the Boerne Village Band will lead worship in Sanctuary at 10:30am and we gather for our annual Church Picnic later that day. It is a good month to be a Lutheran. Come celebrate with us and bring a friend! From the Pastor’s Pen

It’s a good month to be a Lutheran.

We celebrate our 500th birthday this month. It all began on October 31st, 1517, when a priest, monk, and professor by the name of Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors of the church in Wittenberg. Luther wanted to start a debate with students and faculty about what the Word of God means and what the Gospel is. “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said ‘Repent,’” Luther wrote, “he intended the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” Luther was calling for a wholehearted devotion to the Lord, a reformation of life rooted in repentance from the heart. But Luther ignited the Reformation of the Church grounded in a return to God’s Word. Today, over 800 million Protestants worldwide count Martin Luther as their spiritual Father. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us Lutherans to celebrate.

True Life17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:17-19)

The recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida prove how quickly people’s lives can change. In the blink of an eye entire communities are virtually destroyed. What an unbelievably tragic time for those who are directly affected.

We have also witnessed an outpouring of generosity and support to help complete

strangers. People giving out of kindness and love to try and ease the pain for those who have lost so much. I am glad that many in our congregation have donated money, supplies, and hands-on labor to the clean-up effort. That is exactly what we are being called to do. Place our hope in the one certain thing – God, and give generously to those in need. By doing this

we will experience “true life”.

The recovery effort will take years – please continue to be generous with what God has blessed you with.

Your Brother in ChristKyle Gass, ChairSt John Lutheran Stewardship Committee

We will also be delivering hundreds of books to PTC thanks to the generous support of St. John members.

The group has already booked flights for the trip. If you would like to join us, please contact Brad Allen or Matt Olson ASAP.
