Open NightAs you would be aware next Tuesday we are holding our Open Night from 4pm-8pm. To facilitate the planning and organisation of this event students will be dismissed by 1.10pm, as was outlined in a letter to all families. I know that many students will be staying at school and showcasing a wide array of learning activities and I thank you in advance for your willingness to contribute in this important way to our community. I also extend an invitation to all current parents to visit the College on Open Night. Some of you may not have been into the school for some time and the Open Night presents a wonderful opportunity for all our community to see our great College, including the courtyard upgrade.

GratitudeLast week at our Academic Assembly as we were celebrating the success of our award recipients, I asked our audience to take a moment to think of those young people in the world that do not have access to education. In a recently released report,

the United Nations have estimated that there are 100 million children worldwide who are not attending school. This is simply a staggering statistic. These young people are not attending school because they don’t want to - they simply can’t. They live in areas with political and economic instability; conflict and extreme poverty - and we know that if they do not attend school, their ability to get out of poverty and to have more is basically non-existent.

The reason I mentioned this at our assembly was to enable us to view all that we have here at Gleeson College through a lens of gratitude, and this may be particularly pertinent in this year of Mercy. We may not be able to impact the issues that lead to this statistic but what we can do is to be grateful for the opportunities that we have and to make the most of them. We are so very fortunate to live in a country that values education and empowers young people to achieve to the best of their ability. Our role is to deeply value the opportunity that surrounds us and to embrace it. This is perhaps worth thinking about when we next feel that going to school or work feels too hard.

Lenten ReflectionThe Gospel passage for the fourth Sunday

of Lent from Luke’s Gospel is perhaps the best known of all of the parables that Jesus used - the Prodigal Son. This parable stirs within us emotions that we can all relate to: guilt, forgiveness, nostalgia, and the depth of a parent’s love for their child. As the father welcomes back the prodigal son just imagine the son’s surprise and what would have been his awareness that he was underserving of such mercy. What a gift from a parent to their child. In this Lenten season, and Jubilee Year of Mercy, perhaps we can see an image of ourselves in the prodigal son. Lent might just provide the opportunity to turn back to the Father, and to others that we may have moved away from over time, in simple yet powerful ways.

OPEN BOYS TENNIS TEAM SHOW THEIR METTLE v BLACKFRIARS!

Saturday MorningSports Report:

Saturday 27 February 2016Open Boys Tennis:Gleeson College 6 sets 52 gamesdef Blackfriars Priory 6 sets 50 games

Last Saturday morning, eight Year 10 students from our Open Boys Tennis Team arrived at the College to play their second game for the summer competition.

Though many of the boys have played Junior Tennis over the past two years, the step up to the stronger Open competition has been a challenge that the students have relished, with the team generally taking on older and more experienced opposition. The boys immediately took the game head on and were able to win all of their doubles sets - a testament to their teamwork and camaraderie.

The singles games were more of a struggle as an experienced Blackfriars side began to take control of their respective games. The boys however showed their mettle, winning numerous games within sets. Their effort was rewarded with a narrow two-game win at the end of play, as we were able to pull slightly ahead on game score, despite drawing on the set score.

Congratulations to all the boys on a well-earned victory and to all of the Open and Junior Tennis players on what I’m sure will be many more weeks of success to come!

Daniel Coscia,Gleeson Tennis Coach

Middle Boys Tennis:Gleeson College def by St Ignatius3-6 sets

By all accounts, the Middle Boys Tennis contest last Saturday was a great hit out between Gleeson and St Ignatius College. The boys had some strong wins and close games. Marshall Fanning (8 HMGIL) and Kane Paterson (8 HMCAS) had a close doubles game, playing very well but finishing 6-4 down.

Jordan McDonough (9 FMHAU) and Nick Logan (8 DMCUR) came together and showed St Ignatius what Gleeson is made

of with a convincing 6-0 win.

Ryan Doyle (9 FMHAU) and Marcus Petts (8 DMJEF) put in solid performances in their singles matches, further developing their skills, but going down to their opponents.

The match of the day was Kane’s singles clash, which came down to the wire and earned him a tough 7-6 victory. Although the team lost overall on the day, there was plenty for the boys to be proud of!
