TOUCHMARK AT COFFEE CREEK THE{FULL} LIFE May 2017 Spring has sprung—let’s have some fun! With spring officially here, the days are growing longer, the skies are starting to clear, and warmer weather will soon be upon us. Now is the time to start folding up those winter blankets, pulling out our sneakers, and thinking about the kinds of activities that might soon get us outdoors. Many feel that exercise and sunlight are salves for the soul— and for good reason: Both are scientifically proven to be good for us, enhancing our mood, and supporting mental and physical health. Here are a few tips for healthy spring living! More than warm As we get older, we have a tendency to spend more time doing indoor activities. At the same time, our body’s natural ability to produce vitamin D decreases, leading to a possible increase in health conditions like diabetes and certain infections. But sunlight can help! Beyond aiding in muscle movement and cell growth, vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium, so increasing our exposure to sunlight can help us maintain stronger, healthier bones. Made in the shade When spending time outdoors, it’s important to keep in mind that continuous direct sunlight can be harmful to our skin. We should try to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during the brightest part of the day, between 10 am and 4 pm. When taking part in activities between those hours, be sure to wear protective clothing, such as a large-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and loose-fitting clothing. Keep in mind that plenty of vitamin D-carrying UVB rays are present even on a cloudy day, and always wear SPF 30+ sunscreen when outdoors, no matter what time of day it is. Sip to that When being more active and enjoying the outdoors, it’s also important that we are aware of our hydration levels. Becoming dehydrated happens much quicker when we’re older, and merely relying on thirst to tell us when to drink isn’t enough. One way to stay hydrated is to always carry a bottle of water with us when doing outdoor activities, and challenging ourselves to drink water regularly throughout the day. At Touchmark, our path to living well is guided by the seven dimensions of wellness, and physical health means full-body health. Join us in starting out the warm seasons right.
