GRP tracksideenclosures
On Wednesday 15th April at 12 o’clock Noon, Peter Dickson - Engineering Manager at MGB Electrical will make a presentation at Infrarail outlining the existing widespread use of GRP electrical enclosures across many industries, with the aim of covering the processes involved and the designs available to bring this effective material to the rail industry. Peter Dickson will take a look at the SMC moulding process; highlight the benefits of pre-preg material and consider the flexibility offered through modular designs.
In considering some of the industries that have take up GRP, there will be an examination of the major benefits offered to the railway by the material and illustrate some far-reaching commercial benefits. Health and safety issues will also be considered.
All aspects of the GRP material will be covered including mechanical, electrical and chemical resistances, fire and smoke performance, outdoor resistance to UV and oxidisation. In greater details there will be a referral to the early use of GRP and some of the existing sites where GRP trackside enclosures have been installed.
There are many advantages in considering a standard range of existing enclosure mouldings and Peter will illustrate the thought behind a standardisation programme. Premoulded modular GRP offers a substantial saving against high tooling costs. Generally it also gives proven IP ratings and a wealth of certification.
With many of the issues surrounding high maintenance costs, the presentation will examine the ‘fit and forget’ properties offered by GRP and the reduced issues of theft and public danger around electrical installations.

Disconnection
Boxes
The unit can be frame or gantry mounted,
alternatively it can be supplied with a GRP pedestal.
The internal connection system can be assembled
to suit each application such as signalling, track circuiting, train protection,
warning systems and trackside intelligence including axle counting and rail
head condition and monitoring .
The enclosure systems can also be used for all station infrastructure
applications such as tannoy systems, CCTV and safety equipment as well as
weather monitoring equipment .
The wide range of size and
internal connection systems
allow this box to be used for
all trackside termination. The
GRP construction provides
full electrical insulation, high
mechanical strength and
extended maintenance free life.
