Introduction In ancient Greek amphitheatres, theatron referred to the area where the audience sat. This Do-It- Together workshop takes the participants from Dionysian rituals, Medieval miracle plays, 16th century Italy and 19th century Wagner all the way to the post-dramatic black boxes of today. And all it takes is 26 chairs that just as easily form a Roman amphitheatre as they do a classical proscenium arch stage. 2. The Emancipated Spectator Throughout theatre history, the relationship between spectator and performer has been greatly determined by theatre architecture. The Theatron Workshop follows the spectator’s development from a passive observer to today’s emancipated participant, and explores the ways in which this gradual change is related to the space where theatre takes place. The role of the observer as well as its psychological, social and political significance are analysed. The relationship between the ‘one who does something’ and the ‘one watching him or her do something’ is opened up for negotiation and reflection. 3. Programming options - Festivals: An engaging audience introduction to theatre fundamentals. - Universities: A new perspective on theatre for architecture and theatre students as well as for students of philosophy, music, sociology, psychology, design... - Institutes: An entertaining tool for audience engagement and team building opportunity.
