For Immediate Release BWAC’s 2009 Fall Group Art Show, The Words of Color, is a narrative show. It contains all medium of art, performance, word and the imagination of 250 artists. Most artists will have a written narrative as well as their art work as part of their presentation. Some of the narratives are integrated into the work. The narratives may be a statement, poem, or book, one word or one page. Those of us who have ever wondered what goes on inside the heads of artists we have admired will get an opportunity to discover sources of inspiration, descriptions of techniques or entertaining works of fiction. The exhibit presents over 1000 new works in BWAC’s cavernous 25,000 square foot indoor gallery. Almost 1/3 of the space is devoted to “Further to the Edge”, a show within a show, where strict academic display methods have been abandoned. Artists have hung their work in radical and exciting ways. The work of four very talented artists are featured in The Words of Color: avant-garde constructions by Carlo Grassini, where every day and found objects are transformed with the use of paint, wood and adhesives; wonderful urban landscapes by painter Cynthia Chatman, an installation of The Colors of Venice and Burano by digital photographer Steven (Fritz) Weiss, and Anita Giraldo’s See My Voice, a series of speech animated photographs. Carlo Grassini The art of assemblage has a long history in all cultures, sometimes dating back to the 1600’s, if not earlier. I am a link in this form of expression. I react to the materials that I come in contact with in my daily life. Many of the objects are found and later transformed with the use of acrylic and oil paints, wood, metal and adhesives. The composition takes its finished form through the manipulation of all the various parts over a long period of time. In my studio, I am composing at least three or four pieces on any particular day. The changes we all experience in everyday life can be reflected in my work since there are always interesting surprises that change within my process.

Cynthia Chatman My work is realistic without showing all the details. What I choose to omit from my compositions is as important as what I choose to include. I often heighten the colors with the unexpected dab of purple or ochre where one might expect to see only gray. I enjoy working in all media but prefer the richness and versatility of oils. I enjoy depicting all types of subject matters but the cityscape is my favorite because it encompasses virtually everything. There are so many possibilities. That is why I love living in New York and I aim to capture that fascination in my paintings. When people look at my paintings, I would like them to feel they've been taken to a time and a place where there is a mood, an atmosphere, a certain energy.

Fritz (Steven) Weiss My installation, The Colors of Venice and Burano will enable you to virtually experience the sounds, textures, smells and colors of Italy without the airfare and jet lag. It is a collection of 300 digital images and is part of The Italian Collection 2007 which is comprised of over 5,000 digital images taken over a 14 day period. The challenge in working on this series was to captures all the details and the ever vibrant colors of the Italian experience missing from standard captured images. The process is quite complex. The majority of the work is in the extensive layering followed by the compositing and flattening which enables the actual inkjet printing/imaging onto a paper substrate.

Anita Giraldo See My Voice is a series of speech animated photographs. The installation shows through images, sound and electronics, the effect the telephone has had on our personal interactions.

Creating this piece challenged me to look at how I relate to others and what I use to do so. I believe the sensory overload stemming from proliferating technology in contemporary life alters our perception and deeply influences how we behave in our surroundings. As telecommunications devices become the intermediaries for interacting with others, these devices filter our attempt to achieve a connection.

See My Voice sends a message to the connection between all the senses, so that my experiences can be felt and understood by others.
