This Dolch/Sight Words Activities Workbook will help children in pre-school to first grade learn the 220 basic Dolch Words, also called Sight Words. I have used the story from THE MAGICAL WONDER WORDS ADVENTURE book as a theme in this workbook to make learning the words fun and exciting for children. the story uses all 220 Dolch words. The theme is based around a dog named Wonder Wags. He is a dog sent from heaven to help a little boy learn to read better. Wonder Wags grows wings and takes the boy on an adventure in the sky to learn sight words that appear in the stars. As part of the theme the words are called Wonder Words. The pages are colorful and the pictures are fun and interesting for children. This Sight Words Workbook Program can effectively be used by teachers, tutors, and parents. I am a certified teacher who tutors children in reading. I believe this workbook program is an effective and fun method of learning these very important words to help with reading. There is a page for each sight word. There are activities on each page for learning a sight word in isolation, practicing the word, and finally application of the word in sentences and other activities. The words are color coded for each grade level. The sight words go in sequence from Pre-Primer (red), Primer Words (blue), First Grade words (pink), Second Grade words (gray), and Third grade words (green). This is the sequence that the words should be taught. The words for each grade level are split up at about every 20 words to administer first a pre-test and then a final test. There are record logs for both the child and the teacher to record progress and test scores for each grade level word list. Once the student has mastered a sight word grade level of words there is a certificate for the child.

In the workbook I have included a series of flash cards that should be used to reinforce learning. The flash cards do not have pictures because many sight words can't be shown by pictures, e. g. is, saw, was, am, were, where, will, can. It is actually beneficial not to have pictures because pictures of the actions and scenes can lead to lucky guesses without improved word recognition. Creativity can be developed by having students form their own mental images. With each new word being learned the child should be encouraged to draw their own illustrations on the flash cards or on another piece paper to go with the word. There is also a Wonder Wag’s bingo game for further fun and reinforcement of words that are being taught. There is a sight word story that goes with each grade level workbook that uses every sight word for that grade level workbook in the story. It is important to remember that the child should read these words everywhere, and I have suggested activitieson reading and practicing these words in many effective and exciting ways. It is important to remember that learning of the Sight words in isolation does not make a "reader." Sometimes a student can read the words from a list and not recognize the same word/s in a book or story. Consider the Sight Word Activities Workbook Program to be a supplement to a fun, strong, and balanced reading program. This Sight Word Activities Workbook Program will certainly help to boost a child's motivation and confidence and allow them to read more smoothly.

ABOUT DOLCH SIGHT WORDS Dolch words, also known as sight words, are words that came up from a survey of children’s books made by a person named E.W. Dolch. The list consists of 220 "service words" (pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and verbs) and 95 nouns which occurred again and again in children's books. Dolch words are divided up by different grade levels made up of word lists that were found most commonly in the different children’s grade level books. E. W. Dolch divided his list into different grade levels. The lists do not represent levels of difficulty; they indicate the frequency with which the words are found in written material. Dolch words should be known, ideally, by the end of first grade but continue to be reinforced up to third grade. The words on the first lists are found more often than words on the next lists. Think of the lists by grade level as a sequence for teaching the words, and not as a level of difficulty. The Pre-Primer words should be learned first. The Primer words should be learned next. The First Grade words should be learned next, followed by the Second Grade words and then the Third Grade words. It is important to know Dolch words because these words can help students avoid the frustration of trying to sound out words that simply do not follow the phonics decoding rules. Phonics are very important, but it is useless to try to sound out sight words that can’t be sounded out. Another reason Dolch words are important is because they are everywhere! Most of the Dolch words will be in anything that we read. From 50-75% of all words used in school books, library books, newspapers, and magazines are in the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary of 220 words (preschool thru Grade 3). If students know these words, they will know many of the words in whatever they are trying to read. These small successes help build confidence in reading.

Dolch words are often the guideposts for comprehension of the entire sentences and since these words are needed to be recognized instantly they allow for smooth reading. This is why Dolch words are also called sight words, because many of them can't be sounded out and students just have to remember how "sight words" look.

TEACHING METHOD:

Children need a strong sight word vocabulary to be successful readers. These should be common words that they see everywhere in print (not just in one memorized story). Sight words should be automatically recognized by the child. An effective way to teach these words is by using the following steps: PRE-TEACHING ACTIVITY: Read THE MAGICAL WONDER WORDS ADVENTURE aloud to child NEXT USE THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

STEP ONE—TEACHING SIGHT WORDS

Teach about 10 sight words per week. The sight word are in numerical order for teaching them. Follow the directions on each page and work with the child to complete the learning activities on each page using the following method: Show the word to the child. Say: This is the word /if/ -- ♦ Ask: What letter is at the beginning of this word? ♦ Ask: Does this word have a smaller word inside it? Try to point out something characteristic about the word—This word begins with the same letter as your name; or this word only has 3 letters, just like the word /cat/ you learned yesterday.

9

STEP TWO PRACTICING SIGHT WORDS: ♦ Say: Now read the word to me. ♦ Say: Let’s clap-spell the word. (Clap once as you say each letter.) ♦ Say: Now I want you to trace the word on your paper. Trace as

many times as they need until child feels comfortable tracing the word.

♦ Say: Now write the word by yourself on the line. Explain the

letters that are tall letters go from the top of the line to the bottom of the line and the short letters only go up and down from the dotted lines. Always use pencil or erasable pen so that the child can erase and start over if necessary.

STEP THREE-APPLICATION OF SIGHT WORDS: ♦ SAY: Now read the sentence. If they are having difficulty reading

the sentence have them use their “reading finger” on each word and read the sentence together with your help when needed.

♦ SAY: Now think of your own sentence that you can use this word

in. Print the sentence neatly on a piece of lined paper as the child says the sentence with a double space between sentences. Come up with three sentences including the one on the page and write all three sentences on the paper. When done writing, have the child read all three sentences and write the sentences themselves.

10

STEP FOUR Have the child complete the other learning activities on the page by themselves.

STEP FIVE-LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR REINFORCEMENT OF WORDS THAT HAVE BEEN TAUGHT.

1. SIGHT WORD BINGO- Once the child has been introduced to About 10 sight words have the child practice the sight words by playing the Sight Word Bingo Game. This game needs at least 2 people to play (one player and one person to call out the words.) Make copies of the board and markers for additional players. Pick out words that the child has been taught from the flash cards and put them out for the children to pick out and write in any order they choose on their bingo boards. Once they have chosen their words you can use those flash cards to call out the words. The first player to fill the whole card is the winner. 2. Make a spelling word collage by finding and cutting out the new

words they are learning from old newspapers and glue to a plain sheet of white paper or a small poster board. Decorate border with crayons or markers.

3. FLASHCARDS: Pick out he words in the flash cards that the child

has been taught. Show the flash card to child. ♦ Say: I want you to say each letter in the word and then tell me the

word. ♦ Have the child use the word in a sentence. ♦ Repeat the same procedure for each new word.

Sam

ple

Page 10: SIGHT WORDS WORKBOOK CONTENTS - CurrClickwatermark.currclick.com/pdf_previews/25866-sample.pdf · SIGHT WORDS WORKBOOK CONTENTS ... The words are color coded for each grade level

11

KINESTHETIC METHOD WITH FLASHCARDS. ♦ Say: I want you to say each letter in the word as I spell it aloud,

and you write it in the sand (or using another kinesthetic method like shaving cream on a cookie sheet, chalk on the sidewalk, magnetic letters, cereal letters, dry erase board etc)

♦ Have the child spell and read the word aloud when they are done

writing it. ♦ Repeat the same procedure for each new word.

STEP SIX-TEST AND PRE-TEST AND RECORD KEEPING LOG After the pre-test allow the student to record on their study chart the words they know and the words they still need to work on. Allow time to study before administering the final test. It is important to test students twice at each level. I have included a pre-test, test, record keeping log, and study chart. When testing, the student should be able to read the words automatically, which means not letting the child struggle to sound out the word. Give the child to the silent count of 10 before giving him or her credit for "knowing" the word.

Sam

ple

file

Page 11: SIGHT WORDS WORKBOOK CONTENTS - CurrClickwatermark.currclick.com/pdf_previews/25866-sample.pdf · SIGHT WORDS WORKBOOK CONTENTS ... The words are color coded for each grade level

12

How to administer the test:

♦ Point to each word going down the list and have child read the word as you point. The child should be able to read word automatically without hesitation (count to ten slowly and silently and if the child doesn’t know the word mark it as incorrect.

♦ Circle all the words that the child was able to identify and score

how many that were correct. Do not let the child struggle with the word since they are supposed to be known on sight.

♦ Review Pre-test with child and have them study words then give

actual test and record both scores. ♦ After the pre-test allow the student to record on their study chart

the words they know and the words they still need to work on. Allow time to study before administering the final test.

Administer tests in this order at the end of each sight word list:

TEST 1- WORDS 1-20 TEST2- WORDS 22-40 TEST 3- WORDS 41-66 TEST 4- WORDS 67-92 TEST 5- WORDS 93-113 TEST 6- WORDS 114-133 TEST 7- WORDS 134-157 TEST 8- WORDS 158-179 TEST 9- WORDS 180-200 TEST 10- WORDS 201-220

13

STEP SEVEN-READ SIGHT WORD STORY When child has completed the entire grade level of words there is a storybook with all the sight words taught from that list. These are all the words that have been memorized to enable the child to read the particular story. Remember: It is important that children be learning words common to ALL stories, and the lists like Dolch are a collection of words from many different sources, with words the child will be sure to see everywhere. Have the child go through the newspaper or books they have and find all the sight words that they know.

STEP EIGHT: AWARD The sight words are categorized in different colors to correspond to the grade level. Once child has mastered a color grade level of words they can be given a color certificate. Put their name on the certificate and the date. Word Wall:As each word is introduced, write it on the blank word wall brick and put put them on a wall where they can be seen all the time.

STEP NINE: ADDITIONAL GAMES AND LEARNING ACTIVITES TO PLAY WITH THE FLASHCARDS:

WONDER WAGS WORD SCRABBLE

There is a word scrabble at the end of each grade level sight words workbook for students to do.

SIGHT WORD SHOE BOX GAME Put sight word flash cards that child has been introduced to in a shoebox. The child picks a card and reads it out loud. If he/she is correct he/she can keep the card, and it is the next person’s turn. The object is to have the most cards at the end of the game. If a child gets the Wonder Wags card (card with nothing but a picture of Wonder Wags on it then the child has to put all his cards back in the box. This game is fun because anybody can win, not just the best

reader. If the child does not have anyone to play this game with it can be played alone.

SIGHT WORD MEMORY GAME

Make copies of the flash cards so that you have two sets. Use both sets to play the sight word memory game. Choose flash cards that the child has been taught and find their pairs. Mix them up and lay them face down on the table. Each player takes a turn flipping the cards up. If they get a pair they have to use that word in a sentence in order to keep that match. If they can’t make a sentence with the word then the other player gets a chance to make a sentence with the word. If the other player is successful in making a sentence then they keep the pairs, if not, no one gets the pairs. If a player gets a match and makes a sentence they get another turn. The player with the most matches wins the game.

TIC TAC TOE SIGHT WORD GAME Children can play tic tac toe, on paper, board, or dry erase board. Taking turns, give the student a sight word to spell. Before a student can place an "x" or an "o" on the grid, he or she must spell a sight word correctly. If they can’t spell correctly they miss their turn and it goes to the other person.
