Our swimming cover boy is Port Colborne’sOscar, known as Oscar. He was born June 212007 and lives with Beth Pelletier and familyin London Ontario.

Oscar is a student of Agility, Dock Dogs,Obedience, Water Work, and while not training,he loves to keep busy swimming, chewing, sleeping, snuggling, running, playing tug ofwar, and fetch. A pet peeve is anyone oranything touching his tail and like mostPWDs he loves a juicy dirty kleenex!

A favourite trick – he will stop, drop and rollif you tell him he’s on fire. And as a reminderto us all, Oscar shares that he almost diedwhen he was 10 weeks old from onion poison-ing, 10 more minutes and he wouldn't havemade it.

A favourite destination is Niagara Falls toGrama and Grampa's back yard pool (in thesummer of course) as evidenced by his covershot! Oscar enjoys his My stuffing'less Bunny, and shakes him to make sure he's dead onan hourly basis. He admits to an addictionto counter surfing, it really ticks his momand dad off.

And finally, Oscar has ambitions to be aworld class agility dog... “I wanna show thoseBorder Collies how it’s done!”

Good boy Oscar, and thank you for sharingyour great pool party pics!

PWDCC Board of Directors and Officerseffective April 30, 2011

Hello to everyone

Hope your winter has been a mild one like we have had in Southern Ontario. Either way it's

almost over and time for dog activities to begin in earnest! And the PWDCC has a number of

great activities for you this year including a National Specialty which is starting to take shape

as we speak, see pages 8 for a complete listing. The specialty will need manpower and again

I'm asking for volunteers for this and other events this year. Please contact me personally and

I will send you to the people involved who would much appreciate any and all help.

The PWDCC has donated to the Portuguese Water Dog Foundation Inc. (pwdfoundation.org),

an organization whose mission is to generate funds for the research of genetic and canine

diseases to improve the quality of life and health of Portuguese Water Dogs. They are current-

ly researching Lymphoma, Hemangiosarcoma and Osteosarcoma, all are cancers that affect

PWDs. They are also developing a system that will map genetic traits that cause health prob-

lems, this can only result in the betterment of PWDs everywhere. Going through their past

donors the names of pwd owners from all over Canada come up many times so I know many

of you know about this worthy cause.

I recently met one of our members at University of Guelph where her dog is undergoing

treatment and I thought of them when we made this donation.

Land Training Water WorkshopThis workshop is aimed at people who have little or no experi-

ence with Water Work, and those who want to play safely with

their PWD in and around the Water. It will focus on basic skills

that dog/handler teams need for the beginning level exercises

at Water Trials. These skills are useful for you and your dog to

have around the water, even if you never exhibit at a trial.

June 9, 2012

Beginners’ Water CampPut into practice all you’ve learned from the Land Water

Workshop for the Junior and Apprentice levels. You will get

hands-on assistance with your training. If you couldn’t make

it to the Workshop, we’ll be happy to meet you now and if

you’ve never experienced the joy of seeing a PWD’s frolicking

together in and out of the water, you are in for a real treat.

There is nothing quite like it.

Even if you think you won’t Trial, this is an opportunity

to train your dog around water and to learn the work he

was born to do!

Check the club website www.pwdcc.org > Events

for registration and waiver forms. Limited registration,

don’t be disappointed.

MESSAGE FROM THE NEWEXEC COMMITTEEOn behalf of the Ontario Branch Executive Committee for

2012 I would like to let you know how pleased we are to have

been elected as your Executive.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mari

Szauerzopf and her committee for their hard work and dedica-

tion as the outgoing Ontario Exec Comm. Theirs will be a

tough act to follow. Mari has generously agreed to continue

to oversee our Booster events and the merchandise program.

Thank-you Mari!

The Ontario Branch Executive role is to oversee the planning

and running of events for Ontario-based members of the

PWDCC. We are committed to planning activities that are of

interest to all our members – pet owners, and breeders, those

interested in having fun with their PWD on a recreational level

and those dedicated dog sports enthusiasts.

We are currently putting together this year’s event calendar

and even tossing around ideas for future years. We would love

your input. What would you like to participate in with your

family and your PWD? Events can be educational, recreational,

new skills or training oriented, they can focus on health and

wellness – the sky is the limit. What are you looking for?

Visit the Upcoming Events section of the Waterlog to see what

we have planned so far.

We would also love more member submissions in our newslet-

ter – the Waterlog! We have a section dedicated to the Ontario

area – Ontario Branch News.

Perhaps you have ideas for articles or features. Maybe you

would like to showcase your PWD’s antics or accomplishments.

Let us know if you have been involved in organizing informal

get togethers with other PWD owners and how this got off the

ground. Do you have training tips or misses? We want to hear

from you.

Volunteers – we cannot say enough about how valuable our

volunteers are. Not one single event could be run without the

dedicated help of Ontario members!

Volunteering can be an hour or so, or it can mean taking on

a big chunk of an event. Please consider what might work for

you and let us know. It is a great way to get to know other

PWD owners.

Contact any of the Committee members with your ideas or if

you would like to help out at one of our events.

Quebec breeders and testingKarine produced a spreadsheet on the breeders. Our Code of Ethics says breeders must assume life-long responsibility for re-homing all puppies theyproduce, should this be necessary. It would appearthat they are not contravening the Code of Ethics.

Karine has translated the Code of Ethics and Glendawill review it and it will be posted on our websiteand send out with renewals.

Advertising puppies for sale on web sitesAdvertising on a popular website does not necessari-ly indicate that due diligence in finding appropriatehomes is not being done. But the issue raised at thelast meeting was over an ad for a 4 month puppybeing resold by the purchaser not the breeder.

In this case, how are we to say that there isn’t anunderstanding between the breeder and owner. We can’t police seeming ill conceived practices. This must be a complaint driven issue. In the pastwhen we receive a complaint about non responsive-ness from a member breeder, Rescue has steppedin to resolve this issue and has also intervenedwhen the complaint is against a non member breed-er to assist the puppy/dog owner. When breeders arenot members we can’t deal with these issues excepton an informal basis. Should there be a refund ofmoney when a dog is taken back to be rehomed? This should be decided on a case by case basis,as there are situations where the breeder mustexpend efforts/expense to rehabilitate the dogbefore placement.

In an effort to reach people to educate them aboutreputable breeders in Quebec, we will work ontranslating our web site, the Code of Ethics and thebrochure are in process. The CKC is “working” onthe translation, we could pay to have the BreedStandard translated, but it must have official CKCsanctioning. The breed brochure will be the nexteffort. Karine has begun this. Also, keep in mindall testing done may not show on the PWDHLD orthe open health databases. There is another ques-tion of evaluation of quality of dogs produced? Butthis is quite a personal issue and that is somethingthat can’t be policed. Another issue European dogswho do the testing and ship samples to the UnitedStates, the results are not posted on the databases.

Quebec is in a different position with respect to thecultural attitudes to dogs. Puppy mills exist ram-pantly and the laws are not strong. There is federallegislation, but the provincial criminal code offerslittle protection against cruelty to dogs. A 600 dogpuppy mill was closed down this past weekend. Inregards to educating people about reputable breed-ers, we need the brochure, and we’ll need otherinitiatives. At the major pet shows we can supporta booth also. Karine will complete the brochure forthe next meeting.

Should we be doing advertising? On Kijiji you canplace ads by province. Should we consider placingads to direct people to reputable breeders who dothe appropriate testing. Glenda will investigate thecosts and develop a script.

Wishing a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year toall board members. January the 12th is our nextmeeting.

Motion to adjourn made by Henri, seconded byRoslyn. Approved.

joint status in dogs are generally reliable. However, dogs that receive a preliminary evaluation of fair ormild hip joint conformation should be reevaluated atan older age (24 months).

*Corley, EA, et al. Reliability of Early RadiographicEvaluation for Canine Hip Dysplasia Obtained fromthe Standard Ventrodorsal Radiographic Projection.JAVMA. Vol 211, No. 9, November 1997.’’

What will be our minimal age for accepting Prelims,OFA will only list Prelims at 12 months or older? Arewe going to recommend a final testing at 2 years tocomplete OFA certification? With BVA, FCI,PennHIP you can get a final certification at 12months. OFA is more cautious requiring certificationat 2 years, while the other systems certify at oneyear. The issue is Prelims as a Fair, those dogsshould not bred unless x-rayed at 2 years with atleast a Fair grading.

OFA results for PWDs state 15% Excellent, 9.6%rated dysplastic of almost 2,000 dogs. This numberonly reflects those dogs submitted, not the actualpopulation.

OVC our test that allowed for certification under 2years is now gone. Sterility in male PWDs is a con-cern, is it genetic or are there other issues? Is therea case for breeding males younger? Or should dogswho loose their fertility be bred at all? What are theconsiderations to breed younger dogs? If breedingyoung PWDs you don’t know the finished dog as ourbreed matures slowly. An issue raised was breedingyoung produces genetic robustness, improved eachgeneration, with each breeding getting better speci-mens. Discussion followed about genetics that youcan resolve before 2 years, but environmental issuescan impact hips. In hip development as in otherpolygenic disorders, there must be a number of lia-bility genes to be present to cross a threshold toexpress the disorder. If two normal dogs producethe disorder, each dog contributed genes to tip thethreshold. See Dr. Bell’s review at 2010 PWDCASpecialty (Courier Sept/Oct).

Motion by Henri, seconded by Glenda to acceptbreeding stock hip certification from PennHIP, BVA,and FCI. Approved.

Motion by Henri, seconded by Karine to accept forbreeding stock OFA Prelims from 12 months to 2years with grading of Excellent or Good.Yes: Herb, Henri, Roslyn, Henri, KarineNo: Glenda, MindyAbstain: JudyApproved

To use BVA or FCI do you have to have your dog reg-istered in their Kennel Club registry? Not for BVA,FCI unclear.

This motion makes us perhaps the most progressivebreed club. This announcement will be made on ourweb site, Waterlog and on the PWD-L list.

Our current standard as accepting dogs x-rayed andcertified at 2 years stands. Existing OVC certifica-tion is still accepted.

Elbow certification and CERFing puppies should beconsidered especially considering Micropthalmianow emerging in breeding dogs in the UnitedStates. The variety of symptoms include fadingpuppies, eye disorders that can be diagnosed at8 weeks. Dogs going back to 1986 show this condi-tion. And very popular sires are producing this. There is no test, and no way of knowing if this isa simple recessive. There are some areas where youcan’t get a CERF exam on pups easily. On thePWDCA web site you can see discussion of this con-dition. lf 1 in 100 dogs are affected it means that19% of population are carriers. Symptoms includeglaucoma, shorter tails, neurological condition. Thiswill be added to the Agenda for our next meeting.

Health TestingDocuments were sent to the board for review inadvance of the meeting. Now that OVC is no longerproviding hip certification in Canada, we have someother alternatives to consider for hip/elbow certifica-tion in addition to OFA:

BVA (new effective 2011), http://www.thekennel-club.org.uk/item/313

FCI, (more comprehensive than OFA)http://www.fci.be/commissions.aspx

PennHIPhttp://research.vet.upenn.edu/Default.aspx?alias=research.vet.upenn.edu/pennhip

OFA http://www.offa.org/hd_grades.html

The world of breeding is becoming smaller and moreconnected. BVA, PennHIP and FCI allow for testingat one year. (Henri joined the meeting.) The Germantest is also something we might consider in thefuture. As long as a dog has one certification that isacceptable and we do specify what is acceptablecurrently: OVC pass, OFA Excellent/Good/Fair.PennHIP is somewhat more difficult to understanda pass, each certification says what is considered tobe dysplasia given the current body of dogs exam-ined.

OFA specifies on their site the reliability of prelims(see below as read by Henri). Do we have the num-ber in the study? Is there a recommendation thatthe dog be redone at 2 years?

http://www.offa.org/hd_prelims.html:

The OFA accepts preliminary consultation radi-ographs on puppies as young as 4 months of agefor evaluation of hip conformation. If the dog isfound to be dysplastic at an early age, the econom-ic loss from the cost of training, handling, showingand so forth can be minimized and the emotionalloss reduced. These preliminary radiographs areread by the OFA veterinary radiologists and are notsent to outside radiologists. The same hip gradesare given to preliminary cases.

A recent publication* compared the reliability of thepreliminary evaluation hip grade phenotype with the2 year old evaluation in dogs and there was 100%reliability for a preliminary grade of excellent beingnormal at 2 years of age (excellent, good, or fair). There was 97.9% reliability for a preliminary gradeof good being normal at 2 years of age, and 76.9%reliability for a preliminary grade of fair being nor-mal at 2 years of age. Reliability of preliminary eval-uations increased as age at the time of preliminaryevaluation increased, regardless of whether dogsreceived a preliminary evaluation of normal hip con-formation or HD. For normal hip conformations, thereliability was 89.6% at 3-6 months, 93.8% at 7-12 months, and 95.2% at 13-18 months. Theseresults suggest that preliminary evaluations of hip

Water Trial in AlbertaA branch hosting a water trial has policy in theirbylaws to manage budgets and financial reporting. When you have a group of individuals hosting, weneed the same type of controls, as the nationalboard is responsible for losses/profits. So policy hasbeen drawn up to mimic the approach taken withNational/Regional Specialties. The $200 mentionedis a donation, the entry fees are to cover expenses. Some concern about perhaps not enough seedmoney? When an application is made details ofcosts of site, entertainment, judge fees/expenses,etc. could be a negative budget. The board couldapprove that, as long as given the opportunity toreview a budget submitted. In the course of plan-ning if there is a material event in excess of $500,they must come back to the board with a revisedbudget for approval. The average budget for a 2 daywater trial is approx $2500-3,000. Site costs canrange fro $50-300 per day. Perhaps $500 is tooliberal? +20%. Can we monitor and see what istypical? Or we can approve now and re-evaluate ifnecessary.

What follows are 2 new paragraphs under the head-ing PWDCC Water Trial Policy. Additional to theoriginal page above that title (in blue type) to dealwith fiscal issues around water trials held either by

a branch (they hold it and are responsible for all thefinancing, we just give $200 max. if they ask for it)or if there isn’t a branch in that area, like Albertalast year, we need a budget sent to the board at thesame time as the application goes to the Water Trialcommittee and need updates if material changeexceeds $500.00. We are on the line for profit/loss,the individual members are off the hook once thebudget is approved.

Proposed update to page 26 of the PWDCC Policyand Procedures Manual:

PWDCC Water Trial PolicyPWDCC Water Trials are governed by the PWDCCWater Trial Manual. The PWDCC is the only organi-zation to recognize and sanction Portuguese WaterDog water trials in Canada. The PWDCC shall beempowered to certify Junior Water Dog, or award thetitles of Apprentice Water Dog, Working Water Dog,Courier Water Dog, Courier Water Dog Excellent andcertify the Versatility Award to any pure bredPortuguese Water Dog individually registered withthe CKC, AKC, or foreign registry recognized by theCKC or with a CKC ILP number. Refer to theAdministrative Guidelines of the PWDCC Water TrialManual for additional information on holding sanc-tioned water trials in Canada.

The PWDCC will support all sanctioned water trialswith up to $200.00 per year to the host branch, orcommittee if a branch is not in place in that region, upon request. If a branch is not in place in thatregion the trial committee will produce a budget forapproval to the PWDCC board and submit that budg-et to the PWDCC at the same time as the applica-tion to hold a trial goes to the PWDCC Water TrialCommittee. After the budget is approved if there isa material change (in excess of $500.00, it must be

re-submitted to the Board. An approved budgetcommits the PWDCC to all costs and profits.Individual members who organize a water trial onbehalf of the PWDCC are not responsible for lossesand all profits are retained by the PWDCC. A branchthat holds a PWDCC sanctioned water trial isresponsible for budgeting at the branch level andis responsible for costs and retains all profits.

Update to Water Trial Policy on page 26 of thePWDCC Policy and Procedures Manual above.Motion by Henri, seconded by Glenda. Approved.

But it is essentially in Quebec City, toofar for Ontario group to come. Karine has asked forjudge panel, and she will ask about timing of premi-um publication. Motion by Karine to have thePWDCC host a booster at the , seconded by Roslyn.Approved. Can we boost Obedience or Rally?Normally we would have a prize and rosette for theHIT in each, we’ll have to request the ribbons. Thisis the weekend before the National Specialty, willthis affect entries? It may effect numbers, but let’stry it and see. Karine will send the judges’ list whenshe get it.

Our next meeting is Feb. 9, 2012, 8pm EST.

Motion to adjourn made by Lori, seconded byGlenda. Approved.

I started with Lorraine as a neophyte to stimulate mydog, Puccini mentally and physically. Puccini came along sowell that I entered her in last year's trial. Puccini passedon her Junior on her first try with flying colours. I couldnot have done it without Lorraine and look forward tomoving up the water trial ladder with Puccini.
