THE VISITOR BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH CELEBRATING PASTOR BEN & ALICIA’S TIME WITH US! A Note From Pastor John Lestock MAY 2016 VOLUME 16, ISSUE 5 By now you’ve heard Pastors Ben and Alicia Hilding will soon be leaving us for pastoral calls at Cal- vary Lutheran Church in Alexan- dria, MN. I think I can speak for all who love and appreciate them when I say: we are so sorry to see them go! We wish they would stay with us longer! Yet we wish them well and celebrate the gifts that they have been to us at Bethel! It was almost four years ago, as they were beginning their senior year at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, that they came to work for us here on a part-time basis. They were instrumental in helping with the transition as Pastors Dennis Nelson and Van Bredeson were leaving and I was coming. They did a fine job that year and proved they had the “three C’s” we were looking for in new pastors: competence (in their duties), character (in how they operated and related to people) and chemistry (in working with our staff and leaders). Thus, their names were submitted to our call committee for interviews. Bethel voted, in April of 2013, to extend calls to them and they came on board as full time pas- tors, (and as they accepted those positions the acting president of Luther Seminary called me to congratulate Bethel with the words, “You got the cream of our crop, and you go both of them!”). Over these past three years as our pastors, both Ben and Alicia have proven how capable, gifted and effective young pastors can be, even “first call” pastors right out of seminary! They have a wisdom and abilities that go beyond their years! They have helped to shape, develop and mold much of the ministry we have come to enjoy here today! Among other accomplishments, Pastor Alicia began the “Morning Fuel” ministry, a study for young moms dropping off their students at Bethel Highlands Preschool. She has helped develop and grow the Women’s Journey Retreat, drawing in close to 100 women these past years! And, in addition to other adult education classes, Pastor Alicia be- gan C.F.A. or Confirma- tion for Adults, which has had a great impact here at Bethel! Similarly, Pastor Ben has helped organize, direct and grow our youth min- istry and our youth staff. He was foundational in the creation of the Engedi room at our Downtown Campus and has worked hard to strengthen our relationship and connec- tions with Bethel High- lands Preschool. THE VISITOR BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH

CELEBRATING PASTOR BEN & ALICIA’S TIME WITH US!

special reception in their honor on Sunday, May 15 (see page 16) as an opportunity to say: “Goodbye!” “Thank you!” and “God speed!” Undoubtedly, they have left “footprints on the hearts” of so many of us! In God’s great love, Pastor John Lestock * God is great, God is good, and

God will provide for us here at

Bethel. Please take a look at

In most ELCA Synods the aver-age “first call” for pastors is somewhere between 3-5 years. The Hildings have had a “great run” here in their four years with us and we have much to be thankful for! We know they will do well in their new positions in Alexandria. And now, it’s time to celebrate the ways in which God has blessed us and worked through them these four years! They have moved us ahead in our ministry and are leaving us in a good place! I hope you’ll be on hand for a

BETHEL BOOK CLUB

MEETS MAY 4

The book we will be dis-cussing is “The Girl On the Train” by Paula Haw-kins on Wednesday, May 4 at 1pm, Downtown Campus. The train that Rachel rides to London each day takes her past her old neighborhood. From the window on the train she observes not only her old garden that backs up to the tracks, but also the daily activi-ties of another couple who reside down the street from her previous home. In her imagina-tion she has given the couple names and has created a fairy tale love life for them. Real life, however, cannot live up to her fantasy and the couple does not have the picture perfect rela-tionship that Rachel has concocted. When a murder occurs, Rachel becomes entangled in the investigation be-cause of what she has witnessed on her daily commute. All are welcome to join this lively book discussion which will be facilitated by Bette Vandersteen.

With Pastors Ben and Alicia con-cluding their ministry with us later this month, you may be asking: What now? Where do we go from here? What’s to come? As you may know, Bethel has said “goodbye” to other great and well-loved pastors in the past, yet God is great, God is good, and God has always provided! We are currently interviewing pas-tors to fill in, short term, as a “bridge pastor” over these next months to help Pastor John with various pastoral duties. (And we have a few really good candi-dates!) Our Church Council is offering a congregational meeting for those that have questions and ideas, and would like to talk with Pastor John, council members, as well as

an assistant to our bishop on Wednesday, May 18, at 7pm at Highlands Campus. And a call committee will soon be forming to help us interview, and eventually “call”, pastors for these important positions here at Be-thel. (And a few very promising names have already come in for potential interviews!) Though we grieve the loss of Pas-tors Ben and Alicia, we also know these are exciting times at Bethel as we look forward to welcoming new pastors into these ministry positions. God is always faithful, cares deeply about the mission and ministry of Bethel, and will be with us and bless us in this time of transition and new beginnings! Stay tuned for more details as they arise!

The Women of Bethel gather monthly (October-June) with friends, new and old, to share the Word of God. All women are welcome to attend a gathering of their choice! If you have any questions, please contact Gail Nolan, facilitator, at [email protected]. This month’s gatherings: • Dorcas Gathering: Thurs-

day, May 12, at 9:30am. Hostesses are Jane Dahlin & Joan Sorensen. Bible Study Leader is Bonnie Federation.

• Mary Gathering: Thursday, May 12, at 1pm at the home of Linda Malick. Delores Dickman will help with the refreshments. Barbara Hagen will lead the Bible study titled, "Mary and Elizabeth, Sisters across the generations".

• Ruth Gathering: Thursday, May 12 at 7pm. in the Down-town Lounge. Host TBD and it will be a group Bible Study.

• Naomi Gathering: Monday, May 9. at 2pm at the home of Karen Jilek (735 Aldro Road, 715-381-1351). Bible study leader is Merry Heilmann.

WHERE CHILDREN

GROW IN THE NAME

OF JESUS Bethel Highlands Preschool, an instrument of God’s grace, love and compassion, exists to serve and support families of the greater Hudson community. We provide a safe and loving environment in which an excellent educational program nurtures the spiritual, physical, emotional, social and cognitive development of the unique, God-given gifts of each child.

Bethel Highlands Preschool would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers that helped with our preschool Good Friday event, “Walk with Jesus through His Last Days”. We want to acknowledge the teachers who introduced stories from the Chil-dren’s Bible prior to Good Friday, the BHP children who helped paint the Tomb, the Pastors who lead the Children’s Good Friday service, the awesome character actors who played the parts of important people in Jesus’ life, the volunteers who helped at each station as the children walked the path of Jesus and all who helped with cleanup. You helped to bring the event alive and gave the children of Bethel a greater un-derstanding of who Jesus is and did for us. This event couldn’t have happened without each and every one of you. We are thank-

BHP THANKS

ful to have people like you in our Bethel community. (attached pho-tos) Thank you to everyone for sup-porting BHP’s Carnival and Auc-tion on April 16! There were hundreds of people involved in making the day a success: from the teachers creating auction items with their classes, to the parents donating food and items, volunteers who helped plan and request donations, parents who ran errands to pick up supplies, the community that supported the event with over $15,000 in dona-tions, and the many, many volun-teers. We feel grateful for each and every one of you and the amazing facility that allows for events such as this. Thank you for your part in the successful event!

UPCOMING EVENTS BHP Peace Program on May 9. The preschool children will be sharing songs with a very special message. 6pm for the classes of Miss Emily, Miss Alyssa, and Miss Cindy. 7pm for the classes of Miss Rachael, Miss Amy, and Miss Mollie. Scholastic and Usborne Book Fair starts May 8. All sales from the Scholastic Book Fair go toward the purchase of Scholastic magazine subscriptions for every student attend-ing BHP.

The preschool kids are en-joying the new bikes that we purchased from bake sale profits! Thank you for helping us purchase such cool new tricycles!
