And my follow up question: “Where the heck did summer go?” For those of you keeping track, the first day of Autumn is September 22nd. It’s time to get your boat squared away for its long winter nap, put the bulk of your lawn furniture in storage, and rummage around your closet to find warmer clothes. Sadly, with “Rock N’ Roll” Weekend over with for another year, (and what an awesome festival it was), we need to turn our attention to bigger and brighter things…Autumn in the Enchanted Mountains is truly magical. The dry summer has been the

perfect recipe for an early fall, and those gorgeous autumn leaves are like flaming torches lighting the way to winter. We’re not quite to October yet and already Mom Nature’s handiwork is starting to peek through everywhere you look. Cool mornings and warm sunny afternoons are the order of the day – and I love warm sweaters and turtlenecks, so I’m a happy camper! So, dear readers, get ready for what promises to be one of the most spectacular Autumn seasons we’ve had in a very long time. It’s the perfect time for a long walk in the woods. Until next week… JZ

Congratulations to the Ellicottville Rotary for another great fundraiser in honor of Michael Kerns, who in my eyes, was a successful man. Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself, it’s what you do for others, and Mike was always doing for others. The tribute the Rotary club does in Mike’s name each year gets better and better. Great food, entertainment, friends, people, prizes and ambience all fit together to make a perfect evening. If you have not been able to participate in this yearly event in the past, put it on your “to do” list. What a wonderful way to honor a beautiful man and have a great time too. The miracle is this: the more you share, the more you have.

Thanks to a national competition to find the “Prettiest Painted Places in America,” people across the country are discovering what New York residents have long known: The Empire State has some of the most beautiful towns and neighborhoods to be found anywhere. Sponsored by the Paint Quality Institute, whose mission is to educate the public about quality paints and coatings, the “Prettiest Painted Places” competition has drawn nine entries from New York: Chautauqua Institution, Village of Ellicottville, Village of Malone, Village of Medina, Owego, Rhinebeck, Seneca Falls, the Village of Tannersville, and Wellsville. Over the next few weeks, the nine New York communities will vie with nearly 200 nominees from other states for regional and national honors, as judges with expertise in color selection, exterior painting, and home improvement review the entries, conduct additional research and make selected site visits. Finalists will be announced in late September, and the nation’s 12 “Prettiest Painted Places” will be revealed in mid-October. The Paint Quality Institute has conducted its competition twice before, most recently in 2000. Its purpose is to vividly show how an attractive paint color scheme can greatly enhance the “curb appeal” of any structure’s exterior. “We feel there is no better way to demonstrate the importance of exterior paint color than to focus on these beautiful real-world communities that

“Prettiest Painted Places”Nine New York Communities Competing For Honors

take so much pride in their appearance,” said Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert at the Paint Quality Institute. “The places involved in our competition are a tremendous inspiration to us all, and by giving them recognition, we hope to instill in the public a better appreciation for the role exterior paint can play in protecting and enhancing the appearance of any home or building,” she said. A wide variety of “places” have been entered in the competition -- big city neighborhoods, tiny rural towns, historical districts, “Main Streets” and communities with exterior mural programs. Nominees range from well-known places, such as Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Napa, California to hidden gems like Vashon-Maury Island, Washington and Bell Buckle, Tennessee. In case you’re curious, the names and locations of all of the nominees are posted on the Paint Quality Institute website at blog.paintquality.com. THUMBNAIL SKETCHES OF NEW YORK NOMINEES: Chautauqua Institution: Founded in 1874, Chautauqua is a unique Victorian community with an abundance of beautifully painted homes that is designated in its entirety a National Historic Landmark. Village of Ellicottville: Often called the “Aspen of the East,” the historic village retains its 19th century charm with lovingly preserved homes and buildings situated on beautiful tree-lined streets. Village of Malone: Located not far from the Canadian

border, the historic village has a large number of vividly painted Victorian homes, the result of recent community restoration efforts. Village of Medina: A small, idyllic village alongside the famous Erie Canal, the town has a nationally recognized historic business district and many beautifully painted, well-kept homes. Owego: Located in the Finger Lakes Region, the small town is known for the pristine condition of its historic buildings and its first-rate Central Historic District – in addition to a recent honor as the “coolest small town in America”. Rhinebeck: First settled by the Dutch in 1686, the town boasts 437 buildings and sites on the National Historic Register that were built at various times starting with the Colonial era through the end of the 19th century. Seneca Falls: A beautiful town in the Finger Lakes Region known as the home of Women’s Rights and the community that the movie classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” was based on. Village of Tannersville: As the name implies, this tiny town was once a village of tanneries and sawmills, but today is a premiere travel destination often referred to as “The Painted Village in the Sky”. Village of Wellsville: With beautifully painted homes and buildings, the Village of Wellsville retains its 19th century charm while being one of the prettiest places in the state of New York.

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - The eighth annual Bonagany festival, in conjunction with St. Bonaventure University’s Family Weekend, will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 on Main Street in Allegany. Main Street will be filled with a variety of attractions, including the work of regional artists, local food vendors and music from local acts. “We try to make changes each year to make things a little different,” said Lori Bennett Kolasa of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. “This year, we are doing something new with our musical entertainment. All of our music

will be under one tent and will be located near our food court area of the festival.” This year’s musical acts include Mojo Hand Blues Band, Us Too & Company, The Wild Rovers and Sean O’Shea. Children can enjoy the inflatable amusements, wagon rides, a mechanical bull, the Balloon Man, caricature artists, a juggler, old-time photographs and alpacas from Elderberry Farm Alpacas. Some of the food vendors include Larry’s Food Wagon, Fowlers Taffy, Christy’s Old Fashioned Kettle Corn, Millie’s Dawgs and The French Fry Stand. Main Street businesses and restaurants will have their

doors open during the festival, too. The festival will allow students and their families to have the opportunity to see more of what St. Bonaventure has to offer. “All of these changes should keep the festival fresh, keep the flow of traffic moving and add to the overall experience for our visitors,” Bennett Kolasa said. St. Bonaventure’s Family Weekend runs from Sept. 21-23. The schedule is available at www.sbu.edu/familyweekend. If anyone would like to become a committee member and help with the planning process, contact Lori Bennett Kolasa at [email protected] After five months of

extensive renovations, owners Miguel Azcarate and Kimberly Reading brought a conscious construction approach to the new store location of specialty ski and snowboard shop – Mud, Sweat n’ Gears, while offering technological advances in a spacious 4,900 square foot storefront that caters to skiers, snowboarders and those who simply love the outdoor life. Having recently moved and relocated to the historic Marketplace Building at 18 Monroe Street, in the heart of Ellicottville, NY, Mud, Sweat n’ Gears made the decision to invest in building choices that paid homage to the outdoors. Extensive restoration and renovation plans married the old with the new, creating a contemporary, yet rustic aesthetic. This approach is called ‘conscious construction’ and is identified as one of the top trends and techniques for 2012 in visual merchandising [Action Outdoor & Bike Magazine]. According to Reggie Medford of Grand + Benedicts (Portland, OR), “People are using more natural, recyclable, renewable types of materials in their stores.” Azcarate and Reading

Aesthetic DiversityAt The New Mud, Sweat n’ Gears Location

recognized this trend and took it a step further. With the assistance of Phil Vogt Construction and the hard working Mud, Sweat n’ Gears staff, they created a retail showplace like no other. The local area was scoured for materials that fit their vision. “We wanted to reclaim, recycle and repurpose as many materials as we could,” says Reading, “Our customers respect the environment and the importance of sustainability. We like to think our choices will strike a chord with the environmentally conscious consumer.” You won’t find common finishes here; rather you’ll discover unique and unexpected items such as the turquoise antler chandeliers, repurposed furniture, rusted corrugated metal light fixtures, aged barn board and rough sawn hardwood that create an eclectic and diverse aesthetic. A highlight of the facility is the new Speed Factory - a new tuning and service center that features the finest, most innovative tuning machinery from Montana of Switzerland. The investment in new machinery validates Mud, Sweat n’ Gears commitment to servicing the customer

from start to finish. The Speed Factory caters to competitive skiers, along with recreational skiers and snowboarders in search of a quality tune that enhances their skiing and riding. Even the counter of the Speed Factory reflects the conscious construction approach – utilizing reclaimed wood from an old chalet that was previously owned by the family. While aesthetically diverse, the new store delivers on technological advances within the ski and snowboard industry as well as overall product. As part of the move, customers will see expanded offerings and services – hallmark characteristics of the Mud, Sweat n’ Gears shopping experience. The additional square feet of functional retail space allows for a fully outfitted high performance demo and rental center, new outerwear and lifestyle brands, as well as convenient off street parking. Miguel and Kim love what they do and this new store allows them to provide their customers with the best ski and snowboard gear in the industry: Rossignol, Volkl, Nordica, Head, Fischer, Blizzard, Elan, Dalbello, Tecnica, Marker, Burton, K2, Ride, Rossignol Snowboards, Rome, DC, Giro, Smith, Bern, POC, Uvex, Oakley, Anon, Scott, Space Craft, Dakine, Coal, Pistil, Nomis, Grenade, Oakley Outerwear, Analog, Arc’teryx, Marmot, DNA, Marker Ltd., Orage, Spyder, Lole, Karbon, Rossignol Technical Outerwear, Obermeyer, Neve, Swix, Salomon, Smartwool and so much more! So the next time your skiing the slopes of Ellicottville, NY stop by Mud, Sweat n’ Gears at 18 Monroe Street to experience a retail space that’s as much a gathering place as it is a specialty ski and snowboard shop.

Usually in this space we highlight a large free standing home. But not everybody who lives or visits Ellicottville wants or needs a starter castle. Sometimes a small place is perfect for single person or small family. After all, condos need love too. This condo in question is easy to love, and unlike so many developments, this unit doesn’t feel like it was stamped out by a cookie cutter. Just across the street from Holiday Valley this 1200+ square foot unit, has one of the more intriguing roof lines I’ve seen. The roof creates a clever

open space in the living room, where a skylight bathes the room in well diffused sunlight. Here in the open floor plan of the first floor the main room has a sense of spaciousness unusual for a small area. A gas fireplace with a fan warms the room. The dining table is next to the breakfast bar, and a pass through for the all-electric kitchen. At the front entrance there is room for a shoe changing bench and hooks for hanging ski gear. A full bath is just off the entrance, perfect for a quick warm-up shower when coming home from a frigid Winter’s day. Off the back of the unit is a patio with room for a barbeque. Upstairs are the bedrooms.

One bedroom is currently being used as an office by the owner, but there is room for a couple of bunk beds. A notch cut in one wall looks down on the living room. The large windows at the end of the room feature a ski slope view. A full bath with a shower/tub unit is here. The master bedroom feels spacious due to the towering cathedral ceiling. There is a loft here that can be converted to a sleeping area, or storage. An alcove leads to a generous closet. There are certainly bigger homes in Ellicottville, but none that have the combination of proximity to the slopes, and cute efficiency that make this unit the perfect ski or golf get-away. Even better is that most of the furniture is being sold with the home. For more information about this home contact Larry and Louise Oeffling at Ellicottville Real Estate 716-699-6748

Visiting the quaint seaside village of San Juan del Sur on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast, it’s easy to get lost in this surfers’ paradise. But beyond the beautiful beaches, colorful markets and charming shops of the popular tourist destination is a heartbreaking reality for the area’s local schoolchildren. Five years ago, retired Spanish teacher Anneen Barrera was on vacation in San Juan del Sur visiting Patricia Brania – also of Ellicottville – and quickly became aware of the stark contrasts in this country rich in so much natural beauty, yet so poor in educational resources. Barrera’s Nicaraguan Educational Fund is a result of that first visit. Joining forces with fellow retired Alleghany-Limestone Central teachers Etta Walker and Lucie Olson; Barrera helps make a significant

difference in the lives of children in the town of San Juan del Sur and surrounding villages. For the fourth year in a row, the group is preparing for their annual fundraiser that will enable them to purchase a variety of school supplies - including backpacks, uniforms, pencils, shoes, text books and more - that will directly benefit dozens of children in the impoverished country. This year’s fundraiser is taking place Wednesday, September 26 from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Birdwalk Restaurant, located at 5816 Rt. 242 in Ellicottville. For the admission price of just five dollars, attendees will get pizza courtesy of the Birdwalk, wings from the Clinton Restaurant of Salamanca, appetizers, sandwiches and desserts. The band EZ3 will also be performing, and you can also take part in the Chinese Auction and bid for baskets donated by

area businesses and individuals. One hundred percent of the money raised during the event will be used for the children’s school supplies and scholarship opportunities for select children who don’t have funds for college or technical education. Barrera and Lucie Olson make San Juan del Sur their home for three months of every year and work with a local team – including Jane Mirandette and Catholic priest Father Bismark Cruz – to identify families with the greatest needs. Mirandette is the president of The Hester J. Hodgdon Libraries for All Program, a non-profit organization which established the very first public lending library in Nicaragua. She also manages a bookmobile, which travels throughout the 33 villages surrounding San Juan del Sur and serves as a library on wheels for the local schoolchildren. In addition to visiting the schools in San Juan del Sur, Barrera and Olson often travel with the bookmobile, literally measuring children’s feet for shoes and providing other supplies as needed. To learn more about the Nicaraguan Education Fund and meet the passionate women behind this important endeavor, join the party at the Birdwalk on September 26 and learn what a difference just five dollars can make.

It began with Mitt Romney’s disastrous oversees trip during the London Olympics. Something familiar was happening. Here was a candidate who, as the former head of a multi-billion dollar corporation, was supposed to be used to facing adversity and charging full steam ahead. Following his London misadventure came a long-winded, short on facts lackluster convention, a wildly inappropriate shot at President Obama following the recent carnage in Libya and now, with only two months to go until election day, a tape of Romney speaking to a room full of fellow rich dudes where he openly states that it’s not his job to worry about the supposed 47% of Americans who already plan on voting for Obama because they rely on some sort of government assistance and pay no income tax! I’m starting to recognize this guy and his floundering campaign. As much as I hate to admit it, Mitt Romney is Al Gore! Hold on, hold on. Don’t start

burning piles of garbage outside my house just yet. I’m not saying that Mitt and Al share the same views or believe the same things, I’m saying that Mitt seems to have ripped a page directly out of Al’s campaign book. I’m not the only one who sees this either. They’ll never mention Al Gore but even some commentators on the Right including His Fatness, Rush Limbaugh, have begun to loudly point out the fact that Mitts campaign has begun to run out of steam. With only two months to go, Romney has actually begun to scale back his campaign appearances. Every single poll shows the Presidents lead widening and, at a time when his voice should be hoarse and there should be bags under his eyes, Mitt has virtually vanished. There are downsides to being a man who has never struggled. Overconfidence is one of them. Part of Romney’s problem is that this CEO is failing at being the CEO of his own campaign. Sound familiar? It should. Al Gore did the same thing in 2000, relying too heavily on handlers and advisors when he should have been following his own gut and political instincts. Romney, a Centrist if ever there was one, has been mismanaged from the start by a group of Ultra-Right hacks and Tea Party wannabees who believe that the President is so unpopular that he can’t win. Unfortunately for these advisors, to paraphrase former President Clinton, it’s all about the arithmetic son. Romney’s advisors believe that a loud and vocal group of Birthers, zealots and Tea Bag heroes will magically transform into an

electoral majority. Ain’t gonna happen. All the screeching in the world can’t change the numbers. Both Al Gore and Mitt Romney faced more than winnable elections when they decided to enter the fray and, even as the numbers began to slide, both still had a chance at pulling even. Al blew it by sticking with his unloaded guns and Mitt is blowing it by relying on yes-men who keep telling him everything will be fine. Romney seems to be relying more and more on Paul Ryan these days and that, my Middle-Class friends is a disaster. Ryan’s insane Randian philosophy simply doesn’t apply to the Middle-class and it never will. This “philosophy now policy later” approach has only sent more and more undecided voters over to the man they see as the lesser of two evils, Barack Obama. Don’t get me wrong. I would never give Mitt Romney advice. I’m as transparent as they come when it comes to politics. Liberals are too right wing for my taste, so every time Mitt sticks his foot in his mouth or, as is often the case, simply does nothing, I get a warm fuzzy feeling. But seriously, the comparisons between Romney and Gore seem to obvious to ignore. If Mitt and his handlers choose to tread the same campaign path that Gore did in 2000, well then, I can’t wait to say “I told you so” on election day. They have no one to blame but themselves. have done in the past and wants input on what those dollars could do in the future. Today, the “school revolves around the gym area” far more than it did fifty years ago when it was built. We need to consider reconfiguring the facilities to meet the changing and growing needs of our school. The gym is the hub of everything and hosts such events as: graduation, testing, athletic contests, banquets, assemblies, band and chorus performances for K-12 and even community functions. By looking carefully at this space we may be able to address a number of needs including: a dedicated performance area, larger practice areas for the band and chorus, upgraded

gym, modern locker rooms, a large group instruction room, a weight and fitness room available to the community, several areas of the roof need replacement in addition to addressing the ventilation in the 1988 elementary addition. Ward said some lighting is archaic, and asbestos, along with handicapped areas would need to be addressed if a building project is undertaken. “We’re starting to talk about the scope,” he said, adding officials know there is a need to address issues but the scope of the project has not been defined. Without a defined scope the cost is not known. Ward said they are primarily looking to upgrade the older part of the building, continue regular maintenance (roof replacement, electrical upgrades) and reconfigure the space the district already has to match the changing program and facility needs we face in 2012.

“How we use the building today is far different than it was in 1960,” Mr. Ward told everyone present. He continued to say, “We need to make it match more with how we use it today. We are not asking for Cadillac things.” Ward said discussions about improving the building began about two years ago with the Board and Administration and a Building Condition Survey was conducted in the summer of 2011 (as required every 5 years by the State of New York) that provided an in-depth examination of our facilities. Ward said some debt was recently retired, with some reserves available to address the needs. Before deciding how to spend that he said he would like district residents’ input on a building project. He invites them to attend a meeting on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:00 to further discuss the possible scope of a future

She’s currently part of a show at the Golden Nugget called “Country Superstars.” The “Review Journal” voted her as the Best in Las Vegas for a Tribute Act. The show will feature a four-piece band and two back-up singers. Corrie’s husband, Bob Sachs, will be playing bass and conducting the show. So why do a tribute show to living artists? According to Corrie Sachs, tribute shows go over very well in Las Vegas. “People just love to see the old stars. They’re so familiar with the stars already, so that when we look like them and sound like them, they (the fans) just perk up when they see us. It always goes over well. Of course, everyone loves Dolly.” Sachs is no stranger to the stage. She’s been in show

business for 21 years. She’s been in many different shows like “Legends,” “American Superstars,” and “Country Superstars.” Performing as herself, Corrie was approached by a producer who though she looked like Reba. She had her doubts, but the producer was persistent. “He told me that ‘Listen, I’ll have you try on a red wig, and if you don’t think you look like Reba, I’ll never bother you.’ And once I put on the red wig it was, OK, I see what he sees.” After that, Corrie Sachs began studying Reba and within a few years, Reba McIntire’s husband called and asked her to be Reba’s look-alike, to go on tour with her. At the time Corrie had to turn her down because she was already booked in a show and under contract. “But it was nice to be asked and she (Reba) does know who I am. And she was very gracious.” It took awhile before the two finally met, but Corrie says Reba had

no qualms about someone impersonating her. Corrie Sachs spent years studying how Reba McIntire speaks, her inflections and her drawl. “Fortunately when her TV show was such a big hit, I got to see her all the time. It did come pretty natural to me. And I just enjoy portraying her, it’s fun.” Tickets for the Country Music All-Star Tribute start at $20, and are on sale at all Seneca Casino box offices, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, or by phone at 800-745-3000. Matinee shows take place on Wednesday, September 26th, Thursday September 27th, and Sunday, September 30th. Evening shows at 7 p.m. take place on Friday, September 28th and Saturday, September 29th. CCIDAand New York State sales tax abatement for reconstruction, purchases, and acquisitions. They plan to construct an upscale camping park with full amenities. The property, formerly operated as Camp Lakeland by the Jewish Community Center in Buffalo, closed in 2008. It was purchased in 2011 by entrepreneur and business developer John Hutchins, who plans to renovate the buildings and cabins, which will feature “Glamping” services. Hutchins, who will serve as CEO, says “Staying in the great outdoors doesn’t mean roughing it. Guests at The Woods at Bear Creek will stay in comfortable cabins near our beautiful lake and nature trails.” Those who prefer a more traditional form of camping will find Glamping tent options. Plans state that the Resort will

feature fourteen miles of nature trails plus an Olympic size swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, and horseback riding. There will be a 6,800 square foot banquet facility able to serve over 400 guests inside or outside. Facilities will be available for private events, parties, or corporate retreats. Construction and renovations to the property are expected to begin soon, and the resort is slated to be open in the spring of 2013. Additional information about the Woods at Bear Creek can be found at www.TheWoodsAtBearCreek.com. Wiktor notes that the project offers services and options to travelers not yet available in Cattaraugus County. He says that about 45 new positions will be created within the first year alone, and will also create many local construction jobs. Local suppliers will be used with the reconstruction of this project. In other action, the IDA board was updated on the status of Bonaventure Square, the retail and recreation complex planned in the Town of Allegany, at the former Castle properties along

Route 417. The project has met with delays, but construction on phase one is expected to start on April first of 2013. Wiktor says the developer, Kinley Corporation, has been working closely with St. Bonaventure University to hopefully bring the project to fruition. “We’re pleasantly optimistic and we’re here to help and assist Jason (Crisafulli, President of Kinley Corporation) and his development team in whatever capacity we can, we think this is a tremendous project.” The first phase of Bonaventure Square will include a new hotel, a retail center, and a family entertainment center near the St. Bonaventure University campus. Phase two of the project is still under design, with the total cost of the project possibly approaching $65-million. The previous site plan proposal has a Sports Facility as part of phase two. Kinley Corporation states that, “We are carefully weighing our options for phase two until we know we have the best design of that property, in order to accommodate the University and the community.”

primary beneficiaries of trails are the local residents. He also raised the very important point that New York has a law on the books that shields landowners from civil liability for accidents that happen to others while using the trails that cross over private lands. A motion was made later in the meeting to make the town the lead agency on the bike path planning.

FiNaNcial rePOrt The next matter was a motion to pay the outstanding bills, which was passed. Then the Financial Report from the Town Supervisor was accepted via motion. The most recent Four Flushers Meeting was discussed which includes regional plans for economic development by the state of New York. At stake for the western region is $281,000.00 out of 1.3 million. The council seemed optimistic but realistic about the western region’s

chances of receiving the award. The next meeting is set for September 28, 2012.

The caretaking project of the Jefferson Street cemetery is proceeding on schedule. The money given to the historical society is being used primarily to clean the headstones. The next row will be cleaned next week. It has also been established that there are 33 people buried there that do not have headstones. A plan is being considered that would dedicate a universal headstone with the names of those without their own markings. Another consideration is the addition of a sign designating the cemetery.

The proposal submitted by Evans Insurance Agency for insurance coverage for the next calendar year was discussed. The premiums increased by approximately $1,100.00 due to the new equipment owned by the town that needs coverage. The possibility of having all town-owned buildings

The motion to approve the Police Report was approved. A motion to approve and set the salaries of the temporary and seasonal workers who are working on the pole barn was approved. A bid of $8,500.00 for a used truck formerly used for plowing was accepted via motion. The council received a building progress report on the pole barn, which appears to be coming along. A motion to accept bids for raw material for the floor was approved. Great attention was paid as to whether to pour concrete or asphalt for the floor. The project to extend the water line out Route 242 is on schedule. Lock City Supply Company was the low bidder and the motion to accept their bid was unanimously accepted. The last items on the agenda were the consideration of various pieces of correspondence upon which no decisive action was taken. All public business being concluded, the meeting adjourned at 8:11pm.

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.
