Being vegan worldwide is the advancement of compassion that will uplift and unify all cultures, bringing tranquility to humans and animals alike. The inner peace that comes from replacing killing with respect for all life will spread like a wave across the globe, elevate human hearts and create a harmonious Eden on Earth. Preface

At conferences, in interviews with journalists and at gatherings with disciples in recent years, Supreme Master Ching Hai has spoken with increasing urgency about Earth's current climate crisis. As She states, 'Our planet is a house that is burning. If we don't work together with a united spirit to put out the fire, we will not have a home anymore.' But She also offers humankind an uplifting solution, one that every individual can easily achieve: 'Be vegan to save the planet.' As the crisis escalates, natural disasters are claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing millions from their homes, with financial losses amounting to billions of dollars. Rising sea levels have already submerged many islands and are threatening the existence of several island nations. In addition, irregular rainfall patterns and intensifying droughts are affecting many regions, thus worsening food and water shortages. And climate experts warn of even more extreme weather conditions to come, with the possibility of 'runaway global warming.' In this book Supreme Master Ching Hai presents the major factors associated with global warming, and more importantly, its root cause: The livestock industry. In fact, many scientific studies support Supreme Master Ching Hai's view, which She has expounded for over 20 years. The raising of animals for food not only wastes massive amounts of precious water, land and energy, but also contributes to a staggering 51% of the planet's greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock farming is also the greatest single source of atmospheric methane, a much more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2, but one with a shorter lifespan. Thus, as Supreme Master Ching Hai says, it is only logical that halting meat production and 'becoming vegan' or adopting a plant-based diet will immediately reduce global temperatures, heal the environmental ills caused by livestock and reduce the costs of mitigating climate change by trillions of dollars. Many climate experts, environmentalists and government officials have already begun advocating this approach to saving the Earth from the worst effects of climate change. Their voices culminated in the June 2010 United Nations report urging a global transition to a meatand-dairy-free diet, echoing Supreme Master Ching Hai's urgent plea: 'Everyone who has decision-making power should take the courageous step to enact laws that immediately facilitate this shift.' Perhaps even more devastating than our carbon footprints that have caused the climate crisis are the bloody footprints we leave behind in slaughtering billions of innocent farm animals each year. IntroductionEvery human being has, at one time or another, wondered about the deeper meaning of his or her life. We witness on a daily basis the suffering caused by our ignorance, often feeling helpless to change it. But, we are also blessed with brief glimpses of deep insight and joy, which bring temporary comfort and hope to our lost souls. Regardless of the tides and turns of our lives, the recurring questions still remain, Where do I come from? What is the purpose of my life? What am I here for? And where am I going after I die? Should we search for answers to these questions, we would open the door to a multitude of philosophies and practices, some safer than others, some quicker than others, yet not an easy choice for anyone to make. Searching alone may seem like wandering in a maze, not knowing what turn to take next. The heavenly cardinal Supreme Master Ching Hai

Throughout the ages, mankind has been visited by rare individuals whose sole purpose is the spiritual upliftment of humanity. Jesus Christ was one of these visitors, as were Shakyamuni Buddha and Muhammad. These three are well known, but there are many others whose names we do not know; some taught publicly, and were known by a few, and others remained anonymous. These individuals were called by different names, at different times, in different countries. They have been referred to as Master, avatar, enlightened one, savior, messiah, divine mother, messenger, guru, living saint, and the like. They came to offer what has been called enlightenment, salvation, realization, liberation, or awakening. The words used may be different, but in essence they all mean the same thing. Visitors from the same divine source, with the same spiritual greatness, moral purity, and power to uplift humanity as the holy ones from the past are here with us today, yet few know of their presence. One of them is Supreme Master Ching Hai. Master Ching Hai is an unlikely candidate to be widely recognized as a living saint. She is a woman, and many Buddhists and others believe the myth that a woman can not become a Buddha. She is of Asian descent, and many western people expect that the savior will come from their own culture. However, those of us, from all over the world, and from many different religious backgrounds, who have gotten to know Her, and who follow Her teachings, know who and what She is. For you to come to know this will take a measure of openness of mind and sincerity of heart. It will also take your time and attention, but nothing else. People spend most of their time earning a living and taking care of material needs. We work in order to make our lives, and those of our loved ones, as comfortable as possible. Divine know there is more to life than this. We feel it is a pity that the good news is not more widely known. The solution to all of the struggles of life is sitting quietly inside, waiting. We know that heaven is just a breath away. Forgive us when we err on the side of over enthusiasm and say things that may offend your rational mind. It is difficult for us to remain quiet, seeing what we have seen, and knowing what we know. We who consider ourselves disciples of the Supreme Master Ching Hai, and fellow practitioners of Her method (the Quan Yin method of meditation), offer this book to you with the hope that it will help bring you closer to your own personal experience of divine fulfillment, whether it be through our Master or any other. Master Ching Hai teaches the importance of the practice of meditation, inner contemplation, and prayer. She explains that we must discover our own inner divine presence, if we want to be truly happy in this life. She teaches that enlightenment is not esoteric and out of reach, attainable only by those who retreat from society. Her job is to awaken the divine presence within, while we lead normal lives. She states, It is like this. We all know the Truth. Its just that we forgot it. So sometimes, someone has to come and remind us of the purpose of our life, why we must find the Truth, why we must practice meditation, and why we must believe in God. She asks no one to follow Her. She simply offers Her own enlightenment as an example, so that others may gain their own ultimate liberation. This book is the original verbal teachings of Supreme Master Ching Hai. Please note that the lectures, comments, and quotes by Master Ching Hai contained herein were spoken by Her, recorded, transcribed, sometimes translated from other languages, and then edited for publication. We recommend that you listen to or watch the original audio or video tapes. You will get a much richer experience of Her presence from these sources than from the written words. Of course, the most complete experience is to see Her in person. For some, Master Ching Hai is their mother, for some She is their father, and for others She is their beloved. At the least, She is the very best friend you could ever have in this world. She is here to give to you, not to take. She takes no payment of any kind for Her teachings, help or initiation. The only thing She will take from you is your suffering, your sorrow and pain, but only if you want this!

A biography of Supreme Master Ching HaiMaster Ching Hai was born in Au Lac. Her father was a highly reputed naturopath. He loved to study world literature and was especially interested in philosophy. Among his favorites were the writings of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, and these were available to Master Ching Hai as a young child. She read these and other Buddhist texts before She entered primary school. Although Her parents are Catholic, they were open to Buddhist thoughts. Her grandmother was a Buddhist. Master loved to spend time with Her grandmother, and she taught Her the scriptures and Buddhist worship. Master Ching Hai developed a very open attitude toward religions due to this background. She would attend a Catholic church in the mornings, a Buddhist temple in the afternoons, and in the evenings would listen to lectures on the holy teachings. This left Her with many spiritual questions, such as Where did we come from? What is life after death? Why are people so different? At one time, there was a shortage of doctors and nurses in Her town, so Master helped in the hospital after classes. She washed patients, emptied bedpans and did errands in Her efforts to ease peoples suffering. Master has always had a soft spot for animals, and would often take a wounded animal home, care for it and release it. When She saw an animal slaughtered, She would cry, wishing that She could prevent such unnecessary suffering. She has been a vegetarian, and has always been repulsed by the sight of killing or of meat, all Her life. She worked for a time in Germany as a translator for the Red Cross. She translated between the Aulacese language, German and English, and also volunteered to work long hours in the service of Aulacese refugees. She did so at the expense of Her own health and comfort. Her work with the Red Cross put Master Ching Hai in contact with refugees from many countries. She was continuously faced with the suffering and turmoil brought on by wars and natural disasters. Master suffered a great deal trying to alleviate the pain She saw, and She realized how impossible it was for any one person to stop the suffering of humanity. This drove Her more strongly toward finding enlightenment, as She realized that only this could help alleviate mankinds pain. With this as Her goal, She practiced meditation even more seriously. She sought out new teachers, read everything She could find, and tested many different methods. She felt, however, that these efforts were not working, and that She was not experiencing the spiritual phenomena She read about in the scriptures, nor was She reaching the enlightened state. This was extremely frustrating for Her at the time. While in Germany, Master Ching Hai was happily married to a German scientist, with doctorates in two fields. He was a kind, attentive and supportive husband. He became a vegetarian, traveled with his Wife on pilgrimages and was very supportive of Her charitable works. Eventually, Master felt that She needed to leave Her marriage in order to pursue Her spiritual goals. She discussed this at great length with Her husband, and their separation was with his agreement. This was an extremely difficult decision for both of them, but Master felt very strongly that this was the right decision. She needed to devote Her undivided attention to the pursuit of enlightenment.The Quan Yin Method The Key of Immediate Enlightenment and Eternal Liberation

After leaving Her marriage, Master sought to find the perfect method, which could lead one to attain liberation in one lifetime. In the Surangama sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha said that the Quan Yin method is the highest of all methods. None of Masters teachers knew it, so She traveled and searched everywhere for the right Master. Finally, after many years, She found a Himalayan Master who initiated Her into the Quan Yin method, and gave Her the divine transmission that She had sought for so many years. After a brief period of Quan Yin practice, She became fully enlightened. She continued practicing and improving Her understanding, and remained in retreat in the Himalayas for some time. Eventually, Master Ching Hai traveled to Formosa. One evening, during a typhoon with heavy rain, as She meditated in a room behind a small temple, a group of people knocked at Her door. Master asked them why they had come, and they answered, Quan Yin Bodhisattva (The Goddess of Mercy) replied to our prayers and told us about You, saying that You are the great Master and we should pray to You for the method to reach liberation. Master tried to send them away but they would not go. Finally, Master, touched by their sincerity and devotion, agreed to initiate them, but only after several months of purification and their agreement to adhere to a vegetarian diet. Shy by nature, Master Ching Hai did not seek out students to teach. In fact, She ran away from people who sought Her initiation. This happened in India, and in the United States where She was living the unassuming life of a Buddhist Nun. When She was discovered for the third time in Formosa, She realized that She must not run away from the inevitable tasks that lie ahead. She began sharing with all who wished to hear Her message of Truth, and She began initiating sincere students into the Quan Yin method. Master Ching Hais work has spread by word of mouth from this first small group in Formosa to many millions of people around the world. She has traveled and taught throughout Africa, Latin America, the United States, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Many people from all walks of life, and from many different religious backgrounds, have made great spiritual progress with Her help. Grateful friends and disciples are to be found all over the world, ready and willing to help others learn from their beloved Supreme Master. In addition to helping countless numbers of people through Her spiritual teachings and initiations, Master Ching Hai has used Her boundless love and energy to assist those who are suffering or in need. Support human life: End all killing of people. All killing and torturing of humans, which breed violence and negative destructive energy, must stop in order to prevent further suffering and death from wars, disasters, epidemics, and other calamities. Support co-inhabitant life: End all killing of animals. A staggering 55 billion land animals, eight times the entire global human population, are killed for human consumption every year. This translates to an estimated 150 million beings massacred every day, or 1,744 beings slain each second! Billions more fish perish at our hands. Thus, we must do away with fisheries, animal products, and animal factory farms. Laboratory testing involving cruelty to animals also must stop. A blood debt is owed for each individual life taken. End wars: Wars and weapons claim lives at an unconscionable cost. The actual and projected costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could feed all the world's hungry for 67 years; Two weeks of global military spending can secure water for 2.4 billion people; One month of global weapons purchased at a cost of USD108.3 billion can feed 96 million hungry children three wholesome and nutritious meals a day for 10 years; The cost of a single B-2 stealth bomber can serve over 2.5 billion meals for the hungry, restore the sight of 31 million blind patients, remove one million explosive landmines, or build 713,000 new family homes; Not included are the huge war-related costs; Not included are the unredeemable costs of human life and related suffering.

Therefore, wars must be ended. The weapons production business must decrease to zero. If any armies are even retained, they should serve people in their times of need, such as providing disaster relief and rebuilding homes wherever necessary. Soldiers and even inmates can help people plant vegetables or do other productive work. 4. Start a vegan diet: Help co-citizens to be vegan as well by banning all animal products. This is not dictating personal lifestyles; this is the only viable emergency course to ensure the survival of humans and the planet. We must stop the killing and stop the primary cause of climate change. Animal agriculture is no longer to be ignored as the most serious cause of global warming that results from human activities, exceeding even fossil fuel emissions. A study published by World Watch Magazine, authored by former and current environmental research advisors for the World Bank Group, found: 'Our analysis shows that livestock and their byproducts actually account for at least 32,564 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year, or 51% of annual worldwide GHG emissions.' Livestock production is also the number one human-caused source of global methane emissions, with methane being at least 72 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas, while dissipating from the atmosphere many times faster. [World Watch Magazine 2009] In fact, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization stated that animal agriculture is 'one of the most significant contributors to todays most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global,' including biodiversity loss, deforestation, land degradation and desertification, air pollution, and water pollution. Livestock grazing uses 26% of all the global land surface, and feed crop production occupies one-third of all arable land, creating extreme inefficiencies and exorbitant wastes of grains, water, and fossil fuel resources. [UN FAO 2006] Animal factory farms are also a known origin of human disease, including deadly flu pandemics. [US CDC 2009] A single factory farm can produce more waste than a large city; and its bacteria, hormones, and antibiotics infiltrate families' soil and water supplies, untreated. In addition, fishing practices have put life-sustaining oceans on a path to collapse; over 70% of the worlds fish species are fully depleted, and the rest will also be gone within 40

years. [UN FAO, UNEP 2010] Restoring the balance of the oceans, which provide half the world's oxygen and regulate the climate, is vital to overall planetary health. Furthermore, the global change to an animal-free diet would save world governments a full 80% of greenhouse gas mitigation costs, reducing by USD32 trillion the global USD40 trillion costs Dutch scientists have estimated are necessary to meet CO2 reduction goals by 2050. [Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency 2009] In addition, annual health care expenses due to meat-related illnesses would be reduced by at least USD1 trillion, and more than 20 million meat-related premature deaths worldwide per year would be prevented, as would families immeasurable suffering. A 2010 United Nations Environment Program report jointly released with the European Commission likewise concluded in clear terms: 'A substantial reduction of [environmental] impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.' [UNEP June 2010] 5. Start subsidies for organic vegan farming: Help farmers transition and succeed in this sector, thus ensuring national and world food security while mitigating global warming. Organic vegan farming benefits include: 40% of atmospheric CO2 absorbed if the world's tillable soil is organically farmed; Contamination of soil and water from antibiotics, dangerous bacteria, and excessive nitrates in animal farm manure eliminated; Pollution from chemical fertilizer and pesticide runoff eliminated; Biodiversity and ecosystems restored; Food supplies safe and nutritious for all humans [Rodale Institute 2008]; Save 80% of global climate change mitigation costs; Stop global warming for good!

Every time it's New Year's, we should like make a vow to begin our new life. Everything that we don't like about the past year, from ourselves or from our environment, we should change, yes? All the sages have told us already to live and let live, to love and love all beings as oneself. This is a time to begin to reflect whether we have done that love or not. The Buddha and Jesus, and all the Masters have told us to live a compassionate life, yet when we commemorate Buddha's birth even, at that day, many Buddhists still have lunch eating dead animal flesh. At Christmas, or often any Prophet's birth celebration, many still do the same, killing and making suffering for humans and animals, because humans misinterpreted, misunderstood all the loving messages of the Masters, either knowingly or unknowingly. All other sages and saints have endured hardship, sacrificed all to remind us of a more compassionate way of life. I hope in the new year, all of us try to vow to do the best as well, to follow their example, to repay their kindness, to save our lives and the lives of all on the planet. Every time you turn on any television, it's only about war, disaster, most of the time. It just breaks my heart to even watch television. You see, we cannot say that, 'Okay, in my area, in my country, there's no disaster, I celebrate New Year's, nothing happens.' It happens elsewhere. And you will always ask me, like everyone else would ask me, 'Why it happens in Africa? Why it doesn't happen where I live?' Yes, because we are all one. You see, the whole world community is connected with each other. So disaster doesn't necessarily break out in a particular place. It breaks out elsewhere. Or somewhere that is vulnerable. Somewhere that has already some potential for disaster. Or vulnerable areas. For example, if you eat something not well, not good, then the pimple breaks out where? Breaks out where? Tell me. On your face, right? [MC: Yes, Master.] It's not breaking out, maybe, in your stomach, or on your hand, or on your mouth, because you keep putting the food in it, but it breaks out on your face, for example. Or if you have a digestion problem in the stomach, it affects your brain, you have headache, yes? [MC: Yes, Master.] So, yes, that's right. Or even if a mother smokes while pregnant, the fetus inside her womb suffers from poor blood circulation, for example. Or when he's born, he has sometimes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, as we all know very well. And if the parents are smoking in the house, the children sometimes have trouble. Even if he doesn't have too much trouble in youth, after 50 years of age he has trouble with his lungs, his breathing system, et cetera. So the consequences are a long-term effect. So if we continue with the killing of man and animals then disasters will break out elsewhere or somewhere or right where we live, personally affecting us, our family or the surrounding or the neighborhood. Remember, in the bible, the story of David the King: He forced the wife of one of his subordinates to become his wife and then killed the husband, and heaven punished with disaster for his country. It is even stated, that, in the bible. How many Christians would consider that as the law of cause and retribution? That is the law of cause and retribution. That is the 'what you sow so shall you reap.' So there's no need to say it's only Buddhist doctrine that says that, or Jainism or Sikhism or Hinduism or even Islam. All the Prophets have told us to do good things, be good, but would we try now to follow their example? Since this may be the last time I have the chance to speak to all of the world audience via multi-channel television, and in this way, I might as well tell you all this. Because we are all one, so there's no differentiating where the problem will break out. So if somebody does some bad things here, the problem might break out elsewhere. So do not keep asking me why disasters happen in poor countries. People in poor countries suffer more because it's a vulnerable area. Just like your face is more sensitive, so if your digestion system is no good, you have pimples all over your face. Your face doesn't eat anything. Your face doesn't put anything on it, just nice and nutritious cream, or not; even then the pimples break out on your face because you don't have enough purity in the blood, because you have digestion problem, because you eat too many things that are not good, not constructive to your blood purity. And sometimes, you eat something in your mouth, but your liver has problems. You see that? And sometimes you just have a cut here, yes? Or somebody has a cut here, but then he has infection elsewhere. It goes into his liver. Or he smokes here on his mouth, but his lungs will have cancer. For example like that. And if he eats meat too much or too much fat and all that, the heart will have problems. It's because the whole body is one. The whole body is one. Similarly, the whole world is one. So disaster will happen here, or it will happen there. It's the same. It's the same. It's a warning for humanity. It is the consequences of the action that we took. I have also done my best all these years to try to remind everyone the same message, that we have to be loving and kind. Probably I have said more than enough what should be said. I do pray at the New Year's Eve that everyone chooses the wise path of the saints and sages, which is love and respect for all beings on the planet, so that they themselves will also be loved and respected in heaven, now and hereafter. By the way, I am thanking all of you who wrote to me about the change of your life, that you have turned back to your own self, glorious Nature, original Nature, which is loving kindness. I thank all of you who are bettering your own life and in turn bettering the world, by cleaning up society with your own example; by, like quit smoking, stop gambling, refraining from intoxicants, choosing vegan, helping others in any way you can, et cetera. I thank all of you for all that, the audience and the world people, the leaders and citizens of the world, all alike. I pray God to bless your sincere effort to be good and do good and continue in this noble way of life. For this year, I did not have the heart to celebrate Christmas while knowing again and again that billions of innocent animals of all kinds, from the sea to the forest, are massacred for this occasion. Jesus was a compassionate Master, the Son of God, and we who follow Jesus should be the same. Also, there's so much turmoil in the world, just wouldn't help my heart to feel happy in any way. At Christmastime, I was in the mountain, very deep in the mountain. There was no water, no electricity there, and I meditated day and night. And before Christmas also, and after Christmas. It's just because at New Year and I thought okay, I'd go down to the city where there is a little facility to contact you, talk to you, maybe for the last time. I don't mean last time last time, but like when we're together like this, and also that I could talk to the whole world like this, maybe for the last time. And then we all will have to go into deep meditation. We have talked enough. I mean, everyone has grown up and understood things. We don't have to talk a lot in order for people to understand. It is the practice of the knowledge. It's not the talking much. Because anyone who has a caring heart would understand my message, even spoken once, because they cannot also bear all this suffering caused to humans and animals alike. You know very well. So, and by the way, for the Supreme Master Television staff around the world, and in the headquarters there, I thank you all. It has been a privilege to be working with you all these years. And together, maybe we have caused a little good change in the world. On our planet there are places where there is hell or lower world energy, which has made those places into negative areas of hell-like suffering. One such area is the Bermuda Triangle, which is a portal leading to a lower world, where people who are into fighting or harming others will be drawn to while passing near that place, or after they die, and they will stay there until their bad karma or retribution is paid off. Beings live in this lowest astral level in constant anxiety, sorrow, pain, and fear. In addition to portals to lower worlds, there are also hell portals to take spirits that have violated mortal principles of the human world or heaven's standard. There are many negative portals in our world, created by the negative power. Some portals are more powerful than others, with their influence reaching from one group of people to the entire nation, or even the whole world. In addition to portals, there are also connecting roads to the lower worlds and portals. Furthermore, there are sub-portals or road junctions where roads meet. They are almost as powerful as the others. Meanwhile there are also portals and roads that lead to heaven. These can bring blessings and hence there are Spiritual Blessing Portals. Master shared which countries have how many Spiritual Blessing Portals or SBPs. In contrast to heavenly portals, which give blessings, the negative portals and roads can awaken negative hellish qualities in humans. Supreme Master Ching Hai also addressed the reasons why there are so many prolonged wars on our planet. While prolonged war is ended only when the killing karma, or retribution, is finally finished among all sides, or if one side forgives the other's blood debt. But in addition there are the negative portals, sub-portals, and lower roads that push the war to last for a long time. These spawned webs of negative influence manipulate leaders subtly without them knowing it, to use their power and bring trouble such as death, injury, pain, and sorrow for people. If the leader of a nation or armed group happens to be in the vicinity of a lower portal, lower world road, hell portal, or hell road, then he or she will be prone to aggressive tendencies, and start a war or participate in war. This is especially the case if this leader does not have a strong moral foundation. But even a morally fit person would feel unwell mentally or physically if near these places. The negative power would use any small seed of violence or greed, bullying or dictatorship within a human's heart to make him or her become an instrument. A leader who is influenced by these negative connection sites will helplessly wage war or continue warring, even if the leader knows that war is no good or wants to stop it, or feels that something is not right. Thus, peace is very hard to achieve. When Supreme Master Ching Hai saw how pitiable the situation was, and why war is always so evident on this planet, She had to endure much discomfort and shed many tears during Her research as She vividly saw the flashing images of people's real pain and sorrow. Therefore as Supreme Master Ching Hai has reminded us, any one leader should not be blamed for war, because this world is the domain of the negative power's system, which makes it difficult for human souls to disentangle themselves. Furthermore, an erring leader should be given an exit to repent, recover, and rebuild what they have destroyed. There are several ways that a leader is influenced by negative portals, sub-portals and roads: One, as mentioned, they would be pushed to wage war. The war or aggression may be in or outside the leader's own country. Two, besides outright war, they may engage in dictatorship and the bullying of citizens or other nations. Three, they would have bad luck for themselves and their own families. For example, they may be killed or injured, or suffer in hell after they die. No matter how beautiful it may be, they should abandon, destroy or seal off their negatively-influenced headquarters, cutting off their physical, emotional and mental ties with that unlucky place. Then, things would change dramatically and quickly for the better. Once out of the clutch of the negative power after a cleaning period of at least three weeks to three months the leader will see, think, and react differently. They would win their people's hearts.
